1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Interesting plot and characters, no endless descriptions By Angel Story: The Kingdom of Ver had troubles lately: the old king died, and his son has to deal with a rebelling region. Instead of punishing them like his father did, he negotiates. Two paladins as neutral witnesses are observing the surprisingly smooth negotiations between the king and his noblemen. But as usual in these situations something bad happens next. One paladin possesses a gift he was not aware about and discovers a shadow on someone in the crowd. This person, an assassin with magical powers, slaughters most of the noblemen. He gets held off (well, a little) by the paladins, but escapes. The paladins and the king survive. Of course the paladins want to investigate what this is all about as all mages got massacred twenty years ago by a warrior guild called "The Immortals". The king does not get the chance to think too much about the mage because his country gets invaded on the same day. This is basically what happens on the first day. From there the paladins have the goal to stop the fighting and find the mage while a secret power wants conflicts. Who and why? Well, during the book the reader gets to know who. But just at the very end it is told why. And you might get surprised. At several points of the story surprises wait. In general the story evolves pretty fast. Could be a little too fast. The book does not give endless descriptions of a scene or a person, it focuses on the essentials. And surprises. The plot is interesting. All events that happen are connected and there is no real drop in the storyline. I love the description of the situation (of the scouts) before the battle happens. The description of the battle is brief which is ok, this book is not about war heroes. The war is just an aspect of the bigger developments and step by step the reader gets to know new stuff. Details are left to the reader's imagination, except for the important things like the history, personalities and the main attributes of the characters.Characters: We get acquainted to many people including the assassin and his companions. The main characters have interesting personalities. The men and the women. A lot of main characters are members of a secret brotherhood that wants to free Eastern Ver. They all have their (sometimes sad) history. The paladins are a little similar to "good cop", "bad cop". The King of Ver shows different facets while the story develops. The interaction between the characters is good, especially between Bacia and Lord Ellis. And Sir Raphael you hate instantly. You get a good impression of most characters when you read the dialogues. Their history, if it is important, gets revealed throughout the book. But not all of it.The style: I would say direct and straight to the point. You get to know the essentials. A little like: Security instructions, ready, go. Don't expect sophisticated descriptions of the sunset on Mage's Rock.Summary: I like the book, it has very interesting characters and one wonders why the f.... these things are happening. It is entertaining and you can picture many things in your head. Which you should be able to as the author does not describe every single aspect, he leaves room for imagination. If you like this and want to be surprised, then you should give this book a try.
