By Sarah Reynolds A rousing good read that takes the reader on a journey of adventure right along with Chauncey! The main character of the story has to navigate challenges that would seem well-nigh impossible to overcome back in his time period, hundreds of years ago, but he does so with aplomb, making it all the way into the depths of Africa during an era when most people never traveled more than 50 miles from their place of birth. Billy K. Baker is a master of "showing, not telling," which works just perfectly for this story, since it means that we can walk in Chauncey's shoes and share his very unique experiences. Not to be missed, "Chauncey Kerboom" is far from your average adventure yarn -- it's chock full of quirky, understated humor; insightful and witty observances about life; and puns almost too clever for their own good. The occasional passage in "Chauncey Kerboom" is reminiscent of the best of literary giants Rudyard Kipling and Joseph Conrad, but for all that, Billy K. Baker has a winning style that is most definitely his own.If you want engaging characters and a plot line that will keep you turning the pages for more and more, long past your bedtime because you just have to find out what's coming next, then "Chauncey Kerboom" is definitely the book for you!

The underlying themes are consistent throughout the book and the main character maintains his morality and sensibilities through out the novel. I was happy to get to my "reading" time each night to pick up the story during my time reading the book.
