Winston knew the teapot was trouble. Its ability to transport one to other realms had made him the target of a mysterious death cult that would stop at nothing to get it. Now there was only one way for a vampire PI like him to outrun them: use it. Maggie knew the teapot was freedom. It was the key to escaping the tedium of her life as a witch-for-hire on the streets of East London. But it also meant confronting a past she'd thought was long buried, a past that began and ended with Winston. Timir knew the teapot was hope. He spent his life serving those with money and power, but even they could not stop the cult that threatened his world. Now it seemed Winston and Maggie, the most powerless people he knew, might be the only ones who could help. **Note: this book was formerly titled "The Shabby Realm"

By The Kindle Book Review I found this book to be instantly likeable, with a real cutting, irreverent sense of humour from the very first paragraph. If you 'Look Inside' and enjoy the author's narrative style you'll be more than happy to read the whole series. I think the title is deliberately obtuse and as such I am going to refer to it as Shabby Realm Book 1 from now on!The first in what I hope is a long series of adventures for Winston (a PI and vampire), his ex-wife Maggie (a PI and witch) and Timir (A Timmy) starts with Winston alone attempting to secure a teapot on behalf of a client. Little does he know at the time this single object turns out to be the rarest of items, a realm jumper. After an initial scuffle with the teapot's other suitors the gang are forced into trying out the realm jumper in order to escape from imminent danger. It's at this point that the story really comes alive, as Winston, Maggie and Timir are thrust into a parallel realm, one with giant serpents, beautiful princesses, flammable fruit and psychic frogs that reveal your innermost thoughts. From this point onwards the action is fast paced and often hilarious, especially when the characters are separated and forced to fend for themselves. There's plenty of fantastical action and spell-binding fight scenes, requiring the unique skill set of all three main characters in order to survive, Winston's vast experience and cunning, Maggie's knowledge of low level kids party magic, and Timir's ability to grovel. When the final showdown occurs it's testament to the clever writing that the likely result is unclear until the last possible moment.Although I enjoy the long and winding narrative style with plenty of wit, it perhaps takes a little long to get to the action. You should stick with it though as the second half of the book post-realm-jump does a lot more to develop the plot. The unique take on vampires, witches and, well, British Indians, ensures the characters don't feel too atypical and stale, even if Timmy does feel a little like his namesake in Rules Of Engagement.I shall definitely continue reading the series as and when they're released and I hope that the groundwork I put in getting to know Winston et al in the first half of this book pays off in the next instalment.9/10MJ Meads (The Kindle Book Review)"The Kindle Book Review received a free copy of this book for an independent, fair, and honest review. Great read, very funny (in a dry vaguely British sort of way), and characters that you want to cheer for while also strangling a bit. It's a refreshing twist on the vampire/witch/otherworldly creatures story. Highly recommended!

I bought it and then it sat on my Kindle for a few days until I finished the one that I was already reading. By the time I got back to it I had forgotten what it was about. I wasn’t overly impressed with the cover but the contents really sealed the deal. You know the old adage “don’t judge a book by its cover”? That’s highly applicable. I imagined it was going to be a slightly stuffy sci-fi book that would leave me knocked out in about 10 minutes. I was pleasantly surprised that it did just the opposite. I didn’t want to put it down. Seriously. If you like British humor this book is perfect for you. I love the character development of Timir. I kept imagining David Tennant’s Doctor Who voice for Winston. Maggie was hilarious. She added a great element of sass and attitude to the story. The story itself went a little sideways now and then but it had a good plot line. The basic story revolves around Winston as a PI who happens to be a Vampire. While on an assignment, things go a bit wonky. He ends up throwing himself off a cliff to escape but surprise, vampires regenerate. Maggie is his ex-wife who happens to be a bit of a spunky trouble loving witch. No, she’s honestly a witch, magic wand and all. She causes more than a few headaches for Winston. Timir is the whipping boy for an antiques mogul who he’s desperate to impress. The groveling is a bit embarrassing. They manage to come together and are being changed by an evil psychotic witch, ice monsters that use to be human, and other various creepies. Thrown into another realm, they each have their own role to play if they want to get home, oh and save both realms from complete destruction. There’s plenty of action and more than a few bits of humor thrown into the mix. Overall the book is witty, clever, and entertaining. I’m glad that I picked it up!
