Review "What do you get when you cross Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid with Thelma and Louise? Our heroines, Ida and Duffy. They put the 'team' back in 'Steampunk'." - Moxie Anne Magnus "These two characters were like trouble-making, feminine MacGyvers I could not help but love." - AJ at Bitten by Books

From the Author Fun fact: This is the same "silly hat" steampunk universe that is featured in my 2013 novel Reality Check from Hydra Publications.I am transgender, and though I've dealt with various gender identity topics in other stories, this is my first book with a transgender main character.

About the Author E. Chris Garrison is an Indianapolis fantasy and science fiction author with a fondness for airships, ghosts, and fairies. Chris's books include the science fiction / steampunk adventure Reality Check, the suspenseful supernatural Road Ghosts Trilogy, and the whimsical urban fantasy Tipsy Fairy Tales.Trans-Continental is Chris's first outing as a trans author telling a transgender story. When not writing, Chris can often be found homebrewing, playing games, or geeking out over the latest speculative fiction movies and books.

French If you loved Chris Garrison's "Reality Check," but wished you could see more of the steampunk "silly hat" alternate reality, congratulations! "Trans Continental: Girl in the Gears" is a self-contained story set entirely in that world. While it's full of the same fast-paced, fast-talking adventure of "Reality Check," you won't see Lee or his compatriots in this tale.Instead, join Ida and Duffy, two characters with complicated pasts, who get to know each other while on the run from a vicious bounty hunter who's a mix of Boba Fett and the Red Baron. As they cross the war-torn and decidedly *not* united states in search of sanctuary, they slowly uncover the other's secrets and learn to trust each other -- and maybe themselves. The story would be a good set-up for a series, but there are no cliffhanger endings. While the story is a real old-school high adventure tale, it covers subject matter that is very timely and explores themes of gender and identity that were hinted at in "Reality Check" in much more depth.

Chris takes a popular subgenre (Steampunk), creates a pair of likable characters, and sets them off on a series of action packed misadventures. But this is just a part of what Garrison has pulled off here. The two "fast friends" each come with their baggage, and I don't mean their backpacks. But this isn't a sensational story, nor an overly preachy one. Chris puts the adventure first, showing the reader who the characters are through their actions. In the end,Garrison satisfied my thirst for adventure and left me anxious for more, as every good book should. He's also given me a few things to ponder, as every great book should.

I would describe the genre as steampunk western. The biggest problem was that there was lots of action, and the author isn't particularly good at writing action scenes, so that I had to go back and reread to figure out what just happened. Sometimes I just gave up and moved to the next paragraph, hoping context there would fill in the gaps.As a side note, this feels very much like a YA book, as the danger rarely felt real. Yes, the main characters are being shot at and chased and thrown onto/off of trains, but those never feel like a real threat. Ida's father did feel like a real threat, so I was disappointed that that sequence ended so quickly.
