An old grudge erupts into violence as Odd Tangle-Hair refuses to back down from the men he believes shamed his father and betrayed their heritage by turning away from the old gods in favor of the White Christ. But when the violence escalates and Odd's family bears the brunt of it, he must leave his beloved Iceland behind and find his own way in the world. The golden age of Viking conquest is fading when he takes to the seas with his rag-tag crew, but they will voyage to primitive Lapland, war-torn Norway, the magic-drenched forests of Finland, and the borders of Russia, where Odd enlists in the retinue of a renegade prince. Odin's Child is the first of three books in which Odd recounts his life. Beautifully written, impeccably researched, and deeply rooted within the oral tradition of story telling, Bruce Macbain has woven an evocative saga that will sweep readers into the past and plant them firmly in Odd's rapidly changing world.

Review
"Meticulous research and poetic writing make Odin's Child a multilayered masterpiece ... It brings medieval Scandinavia vividly alive. Written with passion, peopled with superbly realised characters, I was gripped from the very first page of this historical novel."

(Carol McGrath)About the Author
Bruce Macbain was born in Chicago, Illinois. As a child, he squandered whole days reading science fiction and history. Greek and Roman history held a special fascination for him and this led eventually to acquiring a master's degree in Classical Studies and a doctorate in Ancient History. As an assistant professor of Classics, he taught courses in Late Antiquity and Roman religion—which is a particular interest of his—and published a few impenetrable scholarly monographs, which almost no one read. He eventually left academe and turned to teaching English as a second language, a field he was trained in while serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Borneo in the 60s.
Macbain has written a series of historical mysteries set in ancient Rome, (Roman Games, 2010, and The Bull Slayer, 2013) featuring the senatorial letter-writer Pliny the Younger as his protagonist, assisted by other literary figures such as the poet Martial and the biographer Suetonius. He also does a bit of book reviewing for the Historical Novels Review and Foreword magazine. Odin's Child is the first in his Viking series, The Odd Tangle-Hair Saga.

Odin's Child a Cultural and Historical Book to Savour By Kristin Ravelle I would actually rate this 4.5 stars!I really savoured reading Odin’s Child, and there is much to savour as it is a long book, rich with cultural and historical details.Odin’s Child is the story of Odd Thorvald, a 16 year old Icelandic boy, in AD 1029. From the outset, the coming of the White Christ (Christianity) into Iceland is contentious, causing deep divisions within families, and provoking existing feuds. A good portion of the book is with young Odd and his family at home, their lives, and the social structure of the time, and dealing with this change.A revenge killing that becomes politically complicated sends young Odd (aka Tangle-Hair) in exile across the northern landscape from Iceland, eventually to the shores of Russia. With some help, Odd brazenly steals the ship of an enemy to escape, and becomes a Viking adventurer. The tale is told through Odd and his companions’ sailing travels, detailing the people and customs of those they come across in their travels, not always happy events.MacBain cleverly weaves in the history of the times into Odd’s experiences, from being in battle with King Olaf of Norway to his strange incarceration with the Finns where he is beset with characters from the Kalevala, the Finnish national epic. Odd is always clever and brave and scrapes through many a trial. When Odd reaches Russia, I was sad to see his story end as I’m very interested in Russian history and wanted to see what adventures he had there.Odin’s Child is easy and clear reading, filled with cultural nuances that envelope the reader in Odd’s adventures and experiences. The sheer brutality of the times even seems naturally done, though it’s horrific to think that the way to revenge is through splitting your enemy’s skull in two with a hefty axe.Because of the great attention to cultural and historical detail, I think this would make a great addition to any university’s Icelandic or Norse literature program. And to anyone interested in historical fiction centred on Icelandic and Norse traditions, this is not to be missed! My thanks to the author and Blank Slate Press via NetGalley for a reading copy for the purposes of an unbiased review.

Fascinating, vivid, and beautifully written By Barton Kunstler Odin's Child is one of the best historical novels I've ever read, and I can't think of any that surpasses it. It is a fantastic read, both for its genre and as a novel in general. The book moves along like an old-time serial—when one chapter ended I couldn't help but plunge onwards into the next one. The characters are so richly drawn. Odd Tangle-Hair is a great hero, an intriguing mixture of realistic strengths and weaknesses, and his adventures are driven in large part by his spirit being at odds with the new ways of 11th century Scandinavia. His capabilities are convincing and as a Viking warrior-skald, he embodies many of the chief cultural qualities of the era.Nietzsche would have loved MacBain's depiction of the effects of Christianity on the spirit of the Scandinavians, and the treatment of the clash between new religion and old paganism is profound. The sea writing, a favorite genre of mine, is superb, as is the insight into the contrasts between Iceland, Norway, Finland, and their settlements and environments. Landscapes and battle scenes are vivid and well-researched. MacBain also captures all the mystery and weird variety of tribes that existed in this strange, transitional world. He captures northern Europe when the cities were little more than glorified ports and trading towns, its kings war chieftains, its violent past still very much in play, but with change already underway. And one more tip of the hat to the amazing cast of characters! Superb.

A Fine Saga with a Flawed Young Hero By Sherry Christie This first book of “Odd Tangle-Hair’s Saga” is a triumph for Macbain, previously known for clever detective novels set in ancient Rome. Odin’s Child takes place in 11th century Iceland, where Odd grows up as the younger son of Black Thorvald, a once-fierce warrior who has fallen into bitter melancholy as the ways of the “White Christ” overcome the worship of Odin and Thor. When a rival chieftain rigs a murder charge against Odd and his brother in order to acquire Thorvald’s farm, the bloody consequences leave 16-year-old Odd no choice but to flee his homeland on a stolen ship with a ragtag crew. His ambitious plans to go a-viking and return, laden with gold, to take revenge on his family’s enemies go utterly awry as he is swept into extraordinary adventures with a Lapp shaman who saves his life, a battle for the kingdom of Norway, and captivity in superstition-ridden Finland. Quite aside from the colorful settings, full of battle-lore and wonderful detail, Macbain’s skill is in letting us see how this inexperienced boy, haunted by the loved ones he has lost and desperate to prove himself, begins to know and trust himself as a man.
