First-period English class is the last place 17-year-old Laena expects to have her entire existence thrown into a tailspin. But when Cree, a jaw-droppingly gorgeous boy, mysteriously appears in her classroom, Laena knows nothing will ever be the same. Before Laena can decide who Cree really is or whether anything he says is true, she falls for him. Hard. Cree claims he has seen the future, and it is devastating. From School Library Journal Gr 10 Up—Laena, 17, has spent most of her life with her nose in a book, focusing on academics. When Cree, a handsome new student, arrives in her sleepy Cape Cod town Laena falls in love and in trouble. Cree tells his story of being an emancipated teen originally from Alaska, living and working at a local park. His background does not seem to explain his unusual accent and ignorance of everyday conveniences, such as a food processor. As their relationship grows, the truth behind his mysterious origins takes shape. He is an ambassador from the future, attempting to prove the presence of a defect in ocean life that will alter human existence. Cree is trying to save the Earth from certain destruction. Luckily, Laena's mother is a scientist who manages to get Cree into her lab to prove his hypothesis. Readers may be turned off by lengthy and unnecessary details. Plot movement becomes sluggish at times as descriptions take over the text. The climate change debate plays a central role to the environmental catastrophes in the novel. The author's message comes across clearly, but fails to avoid stereotypes when illustrating the opposing viewpoints. Sexual situations between Laena and Cree are mature and consensual, but a scene suggests nonconsensual intercourse between an unconscious Cree and another female character. VERDICT May fit into larger collections, but this book will have difficulty finding an audience.—Carrie Fox, South Park High School, PA

It is an unusual mix of science By Michael Ganshirt I was lucky enough to receive an advance reader copy of this wonderful book. It is an unusual mix of science, fantasy, and romance that appeals to a wide variety of people. A unique and interesting way to learn about climate change and the future impact it will have on our world. This is my favorite type of book - interesting to read, well-written, and informative without being didactic. As a middle school teacher and parent of a teenage daughter, I highly recommend this book for teens and adults. It is a page-turner that is hard to put down!

By Callie I've always believed that one of the best way to teach our children about important topics is through the arts, and no one better understands this than Kyla Bennett. The new "cli-fi" author is both a scientist AND a clearly talented writer, who through her compelling storytelling presents young minds with thought-provoking, even controversial, issues and problems that, like it or not, will be dumped in the future generations' laps before we know it. As our coastal cities go underwater and Florida disappears, let's hope they figure it out before it's too late. Hard to put down, immensely entertaining, thought provoking, scary. Highly recommend for young teens.

It really caught my attention and showed a love story between 2 teenagers. It seemed different from the classic love story and that's what was so interesting about it. I loved the characters and the challenges they faced throughout the story. I would definitely recommend this book to my friends. (less)
