By Heather G I had not read Dror Segev prior to discovering “Crossing” – but I am going to be eagerly seeking out everything written by him now.When you have everything but feel nothing, what do you do? Well, if you are Dan Sagi (Daniel Elbaz), you leave everything you have ever known behind you and set off on a journey that starts in the middle.This is a complex dialogue that speaks deeply to any that have questioned their lives, their purpose and their own happiness. Set in Tel-Aviv, this has all the rich imagery and emotion common to Israeli narratives – the humanness of ‘being’ that is hard to find in other novels.
17 of 19 people found the following review helpful. 40-page stream of consciousness doesn't work for me By The Bionic Stan I wanted to like this book, I really did. But after slogging through the first 36% and _still_ not getting to the start of the hike promised in the description, I realized I just couldn't get into it.It's a long stream of consciousness, with frequent flashbacks to past events in his memory. Maybe this is a literary masterpiece and I'm just not smart enough to appreciate it; I don't know.Pros: The glimpses of life in Israel were interesting. Though not perfectly so, the book was generally well edited.Cons: The bouncing back and forth in time was distracting. The complete absence of any chapter structure made the book seem much longer than it was, and not in a good way. Instead, it contributed to my feeling of "when is something going to HAPPEN?"
9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. A Story That Hits Us All, Great Read By Jorge Alberto Orduna SR. I immediately related to Daniel. I know what it's like to live on auto-pilot, as it were. Dror Segev writes in a manner that speaks to every adult that has ever gone through the 9 to 5 world and just didn't find happiness through the work. Everything is just going through the motions. The drastic change made here is incredible, and turns into an epic. Walking away from responsibilities, going cross country, and finding the true self is the name of the game here. I loved it. The emotional connections, the feelings written out, and the notion of a cross country hike all blends together to showcase a form of humanity that is by far relatable. A good read indeed.
