Peter Higgins's superb and original creation, a perfect melding of fantasy, myth, SF and political thriller, reaches its extraordinary conclusion. The Vlast stands two hundred feet tall, four thousand tons of steel ready to be flung upwards on the fire of atom bombs. Ready to take the dream of President-Commander of the New Vlast General, Osip Rizhin, beyond the bounds of this world. But not everyone shares this vision. Vissarion Lom and Maroussia Shaumian have not reached the end of their story, and in Mirgorod a woman in a shabby dress carefully unwraps a sniper rifle. Review "Like vintage Mieville or Vandermeer, but with all the violent narrative thriller drive of Fleming at his edgiest. I fell into Wolfhound Century and devoured it in three days flat. Peter Higgins is a great discovery, a gifted writer with a route map to some fascinating new dark corners of the imagination, and a fine addition to the contemporary fantasy canon."―Richard Morgan on Wolfhound Century"An amazing, fast-paced story in a fantasy world poised dangerously on the edge of quantum probability, a world where angels war with reality."―Peter F. Hamilton on Wolfhound Century"I absolutely loved Wolfhound Century. Higgins's world is a truly original creation, Russian cosmos and Slavic mythology filtered through steampunk and le Carre. What really captured me was his beautiful style and language: his metaphors and associations flow smoothly like the waters of the Mir, like Lom without his angel stone, make you see the world in a new way."―Hannu Rajaniemi on Wolfhound Century"Sentient water, censored artists, mechanical constructs, old-fashioned detective work, and the secret police are all woven together in this rich and fascinating tapestry."―Publishers Weekly on Wolfhound Century"A dark new Soviet alternate history with angels...an alternate history that will grab you by the lapels and snap you to attention."―i09.com on Wolfhound Century"[Wolfhound Century] captures its world with absolute conviction."―SciFi Magazine on Wolfhound Century"A brilliant exploitation of the power of fantasy: the tender green soul of Russian history set free for uncanny battle with its grey, gunmetal carapace."―Francis Spufford on Wolfhound Century

Awesome Ending To An Impressively Original Trilogy By Jeremiah Peter Higgins' excellent Wolfhound Century trilogy comes to a close with Radiant State. This series has been an outstanding read so far, and the finale brought more of the same surreal genre-bending dystopian thrill ride that I was eagerly anticipating. Mr. Higgins has a subtly brilliant, poetic style of writing that creates extremely vivid images in the mind's eye, and his alternate-reality-1950s era U.S.S.R.-ish setting is one of the coolest, most well-done fantasy worlds I've had the pleasure of exploring (and I read a LOT of sci-fi/fantasy).Having soundly defeated the forces of the Archipelago and undergone a rapid totalitarian makeover, Josef Kantor/General Rizhin's New Vlast now stands poised on the brink of interstellar travel using angel-powered rocketships. Meanwhile, Vissarion Lom and Maroussia Shaumian have disappeared from society - he's living a nomadic underground lifestyle using forged identification in the shadows of the New Vlast, and she's been unwillingly transported to the depths of the forest, a reluctant ally to its imprisonment of the trapped Archangel. But the New Vlast's singleminded, inexorable grasp for the stars and the expansion of humanity conceals a terrible secret, and Lom and Maroussia must work together to achieve the impossible and bring down Rizhin before it's too late.Seriously, this is a great book and an awesome series - it's the kind of story where you find yourself unable to focus on anything but reading as fast as possible while wishing for it not to end. If you're a fan of dystopian novels, fantasy/sci-fi/weird fiction, or political/espionage/alternate history thrillers, you're doing yourself a disservice not to check out the entire Wolfhound Century trilogy.

This particular book draws on Yevgeny Zamyatin's great dystopian novel We. In fact, one important aspect of this trilogy, the opposition between pharaonic attempts to reshape the natural world and the natural world itself might be an expansion of a minor feature of We. This was certainly a feature of Soviet life. This is a very well written book and the use of Russian-Soviet history and literature is creative. This final book ties together themes and aspects of the prior books very well. Higgins avoids the obvious and the integration of the trilogy is presented implicitly through the plot and character development. These books have to be read together and in order but the results are well worth the effort.

By archpriest I have been captivated by the three books in this series and hope it continues and that Peter Higgins keeps writing. These are fantasy novels about a vaguely Russian continent and an old style Soviet government with a mythical world beneath. The writing is luminous, almost like symbolist poetry. The characters are fully developed and all pawns in a totalitarian state in endless war; but, a mythical earlier world exists beneath or behind the current reality. Mr. Higgins understands quantum physics and knows his Russian history and art. His description of weapons made me believe they were real. There is no other fantasy writer like this!
