It provides insight into what the survivor (princess warrior) of sexual assault is potentially thinking, feeling and most importantly needs. Mary Ellen gives full disclosure of her process. She reveals her story, pain, trauma, rage and the empowerment that came with finding her voice and significance. It is clearly written from a Christian perspective, or better said, a Jesus perspective. However, she stands firmly AGAINST the ways the church has protected or rehabilitated the perpetrator over the victim. She disclaims this choice and makes it clear we must seek out the victim, who is often left out in the cold, frozen in shame and self-hatred. She teaches correct action, having been on the receiving end of the churches behavior, insensitive & condescending responses. She explains it is okay to question God, doubt God or even yell and scream at God. He can handle it. He welcomes it. In fact, anger is one of the first steps in finding your voice and and a God given emotion. Her words carry authority and credibility due her abuse coming from Christian men who were either in her social circle or in leadership positions, her years of clinical work and her personal story. There are Bible verses throughout the book that shed light on how God views you, pursues you and adores you.The book also provides methods and concepts that can be applied regardless of what your world/god view is. She provides a bill of rights, which seems basic, but to the princess warrior it is a step recognizing she has choices. Her compassion and empathy are apparent throughout the book, and she is very clear it will be a difficult and an uphill battle. Your wounds will be opened, your battle could have casualties, and it will be life changing. At times you will have to crawl and claw your way to the next step, but don’t give up.If your spouse, child or friend is a princess warrior, you will be given practical guidelines to help you respond to her. She gives the church ways to advocate for victims and to lovingly respond to those who disclose their trauma, so I believe every pastor or church leader should read this. One final note. Don’t miss one of my favorite sections, Appendix B, as she goes into PTSD. I found it very helpful and she communicates to the princess warrior that “she is not going crazy, but simply injured”.

I've always believed that telling my story helped let go of the responsibility I felt for being raped by putting the blame and responsibility where it belonged--on the adult perpetrator. Mary Ellen Mann's book validated that behavior, even gave it a beautiful name: The Princess Warrior. Like any warrior, I'm not sorry for the pain I've endured. Pain is part of my faith journey. Without pain, I can't even begin to understand God's unlimited mercy and what it meant for him to be human, sinless, and crucified for my sins. This book will help sexual assault survivors of all ages and at all levels of recovery as we reclaim our identity, honor our memories, love ourselves as God loves us, and move forward into a life bigger than the ugliness imposed upon us by our perpetrators.
