3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. 3rd book in the series is even better than the first 2! By Nerdse I kmow this series is aimed at kids, but I am enjoying it thoroughly! Each book gets better...the relationship between the different groups in the story gers tignter...the history of the fantasy world & the real history is dovetailing nicely, the action crescendoing in a symphony of smooth movement, not too fast, not dragging. Characters are complex, but not so complex that they would confuse a young reader.There's a lesson in these books for 2 generations raised in a "self-esteem" culture: YOU CAN'T HAVE REAL SELF ESTEEM BY PARTICIPATION AWARDS. Until you've been tested & both seen what you can do & found out that failure is a natural part of life...until you have picked yourself up from failure & forced yourself to overcome self pity & destructive guilt, & tried again - learning from your mistakes - you will NEVER know TRUE self-esteem. Until you've been entrusted with more than you feel you can handle...until you overcome "I can't" long enough to try to make a difference...you'll never know what you can really do. Until you learn we all must rely on each other, not stomp on some one else to be "the star" - you will never know how to behave graciously, to credit others with their part in a successful conclusion to overcoming barriers. You must know how to forgive...empathize. ..sympathize...give someone a 2nd chance even if they are "undeserving" in the eyes of others, & sometimes more than just one 2nd chance, while being realistic about their possible negative actions. It is the only way people have ever gotten through tough times...it's the reason we struggle more with a recession than the generation of the Great Depression did.Read this series with your children. Adults can learn a lot from this series as well. Even if they can read it on their own, spend the time to read it together. What you all learn will bind you together as you deal with the challenges of life. I'm old enough to know a bit about that...early in life, I had to rise to challenges that made me mature earlier...& I found that talking to old people was no longer a chore but a joy, that speaking intelligently with adults wasn't as difficult as it had been...that I could enjoy the company of any age from toddlers to the very old & I could learn from them all as well. I learned to LISTEN, the best gift to hearer & speaker both. That included children as I became an adult, a teacher & then a nurse, & it especially included young people, the most maligned group of all age groups. If you've raised your kids to think, don't be surprised when they do! And LISTEN...you will not regret holding back retorts & corrections to hear them out!What we learn from books stays with us...can be applied when needed in life...& is even more enjoyable when shared & the lessons learned by each person shared without fear of ridicule.
2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful adventure By MBFeldman In the third book in The McGunnegal Chronicles, the children face their greatest challenges thus far. The spiritual journey of Nous is beautifully portrayed as he realizes the deception that has been worked upon his people.This was my personal favorite of the three books written to date. My daughter and I are anxiously awaiting the next book. As both a parent and a teacher, I highly recommend this series of books.
