Review

"For those who think Christianity should run counter to the dominant culture, this book offers a wild and exhilarating idea about how lives might be lived!"

--Bill McKibben, author and activist

"Rewilding the Way" calls us to be dangerously alive to the ultimate source of life and the critical challenges of our time. Todd Wynward is a voice crying out in the wilderness with surprising playfulness, practicality, and hope."—Mark Scandrette, author of Free: Practicing the Way of Jesus and Soul Graffiti

"Rewilding the Way is a clarion call not to the good life but to a better life, a life based on God s dream rather than the American Dream, the Jesus Way rather than culture s mores. Wynward invites us to make the leap from a mild faith to a wild faith based on the countercultural gospel message of less me and more we."

--Nancy Sleeth, cofounder of Blessed Earth and author of Almost Amish

"Here is a primer for a First World Christian faith seeking to respond to the interlocking social and ecological crises stalking our history with discipleship rather than denial. Wynward knows his way around wilderness—as landscape and religious tradition—and is a reliable guide for exploring both. I commend this readable, engaging introduction to following Jesus and de-domesticating our churches in this demanding and discouraging historical moment."—Ched Myers, Mennonite activist theologian

"I met Todd Wynward in a group of folks committed to the risk of smuggling refugees safely across the Southwest border. A lot of lives were saved. Now, Todd has written a text that will save a lot of souls. Read this book, rewild your spirit, and join with the Jesus Way to save the sacred earth."

--John Fife, human rights activist and cofounder of the Sanctuary movement

Thought Provoking Read By VM Todd Wynward ‘s Rewilding the Way: Break Free to Follow an Untamed God, does an incredible job of weaving Christianity with environmentalism. Tackling issues like affluenza, over-consumption and climate change, Wynward goes beyond the notions of a collective creation care and takes a look at individual practices and underlying themes in relation to faith. How does one follow Jesus Christ, a teacher who traveled the region spending time with low society charters? More so—how do we as children, sisters, brothers, mothers, and fathers live in the world but not of the world? How does one negotiate the realm of work, family life and spirituality? Drawing from his wilderness experience, Wynward advocates a return to the wild. He asks his readers to go cimarron, “a Spanish term for a slave or domesticated animal gone free.” He pushes his readers to re-evaluate not just life but the paths Christians embark on as he re-invigorates scripture stories and parables.Perhaps my favorite aspect of this book is that Wynward provides readers with conviction. This is not the fire and brimstone conviction but rather a grace-filled understanding of life. As Christians, we must continue to strive to love God and love our neighbors. With our rapidly expanding world, this means looking at our choices and evaluating our lifestyles, while still considering how to live in the world. Wynward does not condemn the sinner or the over-consumer, but rather recognizes we all fall a bit short in this world. At the end of the day, God’s love is delivered to us all.

Castor In a culture where "comfortable numbness" is narcotizing us to the overwhelming challenges facing humanity, many of us have been wondering, "Where is the church? Where is that prophetic voice that asks us to leave the three hots and a cot of Egypt for the untamed, unknown place of the wilderness?" Todd Wynward steps up to the plate in a big way. He imaginatively explores the place of wilderness threaded throughout the scriptures. He calls his readers to a deeper awareness of the need for the wild in our lives and reminds all of us that we are "to be conspirators in God's dream, collaborators in redemption” (Rewilding the Way, p. 22). Todd opened my eyes in new ways to the affluenza which permeates our society. Using himself (with wonderful humor) as an example, he helps the reader to see the ways in which even the most “righteous” of us buy in. Instead of leaving us in some guilt-plagued no-man’s land, the last 1/3 of the book is filled with real life models of people and communities who are exploring new ways of living imaginatively and sustainably in a culture of more. I believe Todd is a modern day prophet, a voice our culture desperately needs to open its ears to. His vision of “watershed discipleship” challenged me to look at what I’m doing to care in real ways for the gift of beauty and life in my own backyard. For those of us who have “become comfortably numb”, this book is a powerful wake up call. I pray that we as followers of Christ and lovers of this wonder-filled creation would join with Todd in his quest, that we might become part of that remnant that not only battles affluenza but enters more deeply into the connections offered by “the wild”. Right on, and thank you Todd! Rock Castor, Co-Director of Lagom Landing, a 9-month adventure, building your LIFE! www.lagomlanding.com

A manifesto for change By Lynn Miller If you are looking for hope in the midst of the ecological and spiritual degradation you see around you, you will find it in the pages of REWILDING THE WAY. But be warned, in these pages you will be challenged to actually be a part of the change you seek, and not just be encouraged by what you have read.
