Beginning with a whimsical title and cover, nothing in this mystery is what it seems. Victor Joshua Walker’s father is an assistant manager of the local supermarket, obsessed with Russian composers and Captain Joshua Slocum, the first man to sail alone around the world 100 years earlier. Much to Victor’s dismay, his father has planned a similar journey for his family and is building a boat in the barn next door. After a neighbor’s trailer burns to the ground, he launches his boat and they move aboard. After nine years, it still isn’t finished; it’s the dead of winter; the marina’s deserted; the boat is the size of a school bus; and there’s no heat! No matter that Victor’s father has told everyone he will follow Slocum’s route, for seemingly no reason at all, he suddenly decides to go another way... Chicken of the Sea is more than a story about dragging three cynical kids around the world. Along with wry humor are the realistic aspects of living aboard a small sailing boat, from doing schoolwork on the dining table to the hardships of ocean voyages. There are storms at sea, fascinating foreign cultures, and exotic tropical islands. There are also clues to a past life; burns on Victor’s forearms, grandparents who died in a house fire, a missing uncle and aunt, valuable first-edition books, a guitar once played by Segovia… If that’s not enough, people are following them. On a desolate island in the southern Bahamas, an old man arrives just in time to save Victor and his younger brother when they encounter a Hammerhead shark. Victor soon discovers that the old man, while a good friend, launders money for a drug cartel, and is as dangerous as the shark. Like the men who have followed the Walkers from Norfolk, Virginia, he’s never far away. In the midst of long days spent at sea, there is murder, kidnapping, a life-threatening appendix operation as the family rounds Cape Horn, and a thrilling conclusion when the Walkers arrive in the Marquesas Islands in the Pacific. Or is it the conclusion when there are so many unanswered questions? Chicken Too picks up the story, beginning two weeks later when disaster looms on the horizon…

Chicken of the Sea (Volume 1), by Neil Barry

About the Author Neil Barry lives aboard his 50-foot sloop, Imagine, cruising the East Coast of the U.S., the Bahamas, and points south. Born in Sydney, Australia, he began sailing at 12 years old, graduating to racing yachts in college. In 1977, he took time off from sailing to attend graduate school, travel the world, raise a family, and build a career as an academic. His next boat arrived 13 years later, a 28-foot cutter on a small man-made lake in the Midwest. Seventeen years passed before he heard the call of the sea and foreign ports. His Chicken of the Sea trilogy is a new kind of novel, one that stimulates learning, in addition to providing entertainment. It combines real places, things, events, and situations with fictional people and an engrossing, believable plot. Traveling from the frigid waters of the Northeast to the warm marshy waters along the southern coast and further still to beckoning paradise islands, I found myself somehow tucked away in the Walker's very cramped and testy vessel. As graceful as she is, the sea speaks her mind through calm, serene whispers and turbulent, resounding roars. Echoing back to her, Joshua's mysterious and determined father chooses the music of classic Russian composers. Baffling characters ebb in and out of the plot and culminate in quite a suspenseful apex leaving the reader hungry for more.Relating to the daily challenges of homeschooling my own children, considering tacking it while sailing around the world, gave me a new perspective on those who REALLY DO IT. Amazed by the fullness of each day, the lessons that no book could ever teach and thankfully, the freedom to homeschool whenever and where ever has opened my mind to move beyond the walls of my home more often. I don't know if I'll be sailing around the world any time soon, but I do feel like I've learned quite a bit about sailing that I never knew before ; )

As long time sailors, we found the story of Josh and his family intriguing. As the mystery of Josh's (Victor's) family unfolds, the story holds the reader's interest and curiosity to the end. Good work, Mr. Barry!
