After a son does the unthinkable, how can a mother go on?On October 2, 2006, a gunman entered an Amish one-room schoolhouse, shooting ten girls, killing five, then finally taking his own life. This is his mother's story. Not only did she lose her precious son through suicide, but she also lost her understanding of him as an honorable man. It was a trauma that none should ever have to face. But the biggest headlines came when her Amish neighbors did the unimaginable, reaching out to the family of the shooter with comfort and forgiveness. Today Terri lives in harmony with the Amish and has built lasting relationships beyond what anyone could have thought possible. From the grace that the Amish showed Terri's family from day one, to the visits and ongoing care Terri has given to the victims and their families, no one could have foreseen the love and friendship that have been forged from the fires of tragedy."Caution advised: You won't be able to put this book down once you start reading."--Donald B. Kraybill, author of Amish Grace

Viewing Tragedy through the Lens of Forgiveness- An Incredible Story By Joyclynn School shootings are all too frequently in the headlines, but after the reporters, the analysts and the politicians have moved on, what remains for the families of both the victims and the perpetrator is grief, the unanswerable question "why", and a road that leads either to bitterness or healing.Terri Roberts chose healing after her adult son, Charlie, a married man and the father of three young children, shot ten Amish schoolgirls one October morning in 2006, killing five and wounding the other five, before taking his own life. The Amish response to the Nickel Mines School shooting stunned the world; from the first day it was one of forgiveness, compassion and gracious concern for the family of their daughters' murderer.Terri's book "Forgiven" is a mother's heart-wrenching testimony to the power of that forgiveness, the healing it brought her, and how she learned to surrender to God in circumstances she could not control and had no power to change.Terri's story is gripping and well-written. In a world where grief, tragedy, and evil cannot be avoided, the message Terri Roberts offers is one every person needs to hear. To forgive and (perhaps to be forgiven) is the only path to healing when we suffer because of another person's choices. This book is a must read.I received a complimentary copy of this book for review from Bethany House Publishers. Awesome story of the miracle of forgiveness By Kykimba Forgiven: The Amish School Shooting, A Mother's Love, And a Story of Remarkable Grace by Terri Roberts is an awesome TRUE story of forgiveness.I remember where I was at when I heard of the shootings at Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania, and how I stopped to pray for all the families involved. I couldn't imagine being the mother of either, one of the girls shot on that day, or the mother of the shooter. My heart and prayers went out to both on that sad day, and still does.Terri Roberts is the mother of Charles Roberts, who the world knows as the man that walked into an Amish school in 2006 and shot 10 little girls, killing 5, and then himself. She remembers the loving, caring son she raised, how could he have done such a thing? How can SHE forgive her son?The Amish, show the family and the world what forgiveness is. As God says in his word, we MUST forgive to be forgiven. This is such a heart-warming book written by a broken-hearted mother as she tells how the broken-hearted families helped her. I cried as I read her story, of what forgiveness can do.I highly recommend this book to everyone, as it an awesome story of the miracle of forgiveness! Look for it on the shelves October 6, 2015I received an ARC (advanced readers copy) from Bethany House Publishing and LibraryThing in exchange for my honest review.

By Julius L McCarter Terri Roberts' Forgiven: The Amish School Shooting, A Mother's Love, and a Story of Remarkable Grace is one of the most compelling accounts of the practice of Christian forgiveness and healing that I've read in a long time. The fact that is recounts real lives living Christianly is a testament to the difference that Jesus Christ makes in the real world.Forgiven recounts the events of October 2, 2006, and the Nickel Mines Schoolhouse shooting in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.Forgiveness is at the heart of the Gospel -- that God, in Jesus Christ, goes to the greatest lengths to forgive God's enemies. And what's more: Christians, then, love others -- even our enemies -- as a testament to that Gospel. Forgiveness, in other words, is the Christian practice of the difference Jesus makes in our lives. And the Amish know and practice this forgiveness in a way that stuns the world after the events of October 2, 2006.What makes Forgiven even more compelling is that this story is told from the vantage of one of those most in need of that forgiveness that brings wholeness -- the shooter's family (in particular, Terri is the mother of the shooter). Terri and Chuck Roberts were well-known, well-loved and well-respected in their community and their church. But their lives changed on that day. From their despair, anguish and grief, through trying to understand and make sense of the tragedy and then working to try to bring about healing for their community and family, Teri looks at what forgiveness really means for those extending it and for those receiving it in this little book. The book itself is a real page-turner. I couldn't put it down once I'd started reading. Because Roberts is able to bring readers into the very crux of the matter -- that forgiveness is more than some vague idea of letting the past go. It's the very real practices -- the choice we make day in and day out -- to embrace the other qua other, and seek the wholeness that God envisions for all creation in their particular lives. So at the end of the day, Forgiven is more than a story. It's a call to the larger Church to extend that forgiveness to others -- even those who would kill us -- in our every word and act. That's what really makes Forgiven so compelling. It's more than just a book. It's a way of life that has flesh and blood embodying that life.Which really shouldn't surprise us. Because that's the way God made known forgiveness in the first place -- through the flesh and blood of a man who forgave his enemies and brought peace to those who killed him.__________________I received this free book from Bethany House Publishers in exchange for my honest review here.
