Read the book that began it all: Fear the Dead is the first in a dystopian series set in the near future where the world as we know it is gone. ______________________ They said the outbreak would only last a few days, but fifteen years later the world has gone to hell. The infected roam the streets, and at night the mutated stalkers leave their nests to kill. Nobody knows what they are, and anyone outside after dark will find out how dangerous they can be. A broken man has to make one last trip through a dead world with a promise to his dead wife to fulfill. He thought he knew about survival, but this is just the beginning of the horror. The apocalypse makes different things of us all. Fathers turn into killers, mothers become preppers. Daughters learn to be survivors, and sons become traitors. ______________________ Praise for the Fear the Dead ‘Loved this book. It had everything you want to see in a good apocalyptic story. And it’s great to see a British author giving the likes of Mr Kirkman a run for his money. Bring on the next book. Can’t wait.’ ‘Excellent baddies and a realistic depiction of a post-apocalyptic future. Fear the Dead has left me wanting more and I'd love to know what happens next. I would read a sequel in a heartbeat!’ ‘The author Jack Lewis is the mist of writing what could be one of the classic end of the world zombie tales in years to come.’ ______ Chapter 1 Preview Shadows slid from the spines of the trees and covered the woods in darkness. Night was nearly here, and soon it wouldn't just be the infected lurking in the forest; the stalkers were coming. Rain fell on my windbreaker in patters that soaked into my shoulders and weighed me down with each drip. My back was slick with water from where the waterproof lining of my coat had faded. In the distance, an infected stumbled through the trees and crunched on the twigs beneath it with clumsy footsteps. I had a revolver in my bag, but gunshots were the last thing I needed. That was a sure way of getting the infected to come for you, drawn in by the prospect of a meal. I walked quieter and breathed softer, hoping it wouldn’t look my way. The sky darkened. My stomach ached with hunger, and each step was a chore. I needed to sit down, I needed food, and I had to get to shelter before the stalkers came. There was a town called Vasey less than an hour’s walk away. There would be a roof to guard me from the elements, and walls to protect me from the things that walked in the night. There would be food, warmth and if I was lucky, maybe even a beer. My mouth watered at the idea of gulping on a bottle of cold ale. The problem with going to town was there would also be people there, and lots of them. Vasey was the biggest survivor settlement in Lancashire, and it was as safe a place you could get in this new world.

Fear the Dead: A Zombie Apocalypse Series, by Jack Lewis

Review "Fear the Dead has left me wanting more and I'd love to know what happens next. I would read a sequel in a heartbeat!""Fear the Dead is an excellent start to what I hope in an on going series of an end of the world tale.""Kyle is living alone in the wilds instead of trying to fit in with people. After losing his wife years ago, he doesn't want to fit into a society. Instead he lives day to day and night to night trying to survive zombies and stalkers. After visiting a settlement, he's been tricked into taking a young man a long with him. Great start to the series.""This seems like a good start to a great series! I look forward to the next one. This story has a darker than usual outlook that was honestly quite refreshing in my humble opinion."

From the Author I wanted to write a book that wasn't set in the immediate aftermath of an end of the world disaster but years later. Fifteen years, to be precise. I imagined a world where even the most careful preppers had seen their plans go to waste, and where the only people still alive were the ones who had learned to be survivors.

About the Author Jack Lewis writes post apocalyptic, dystopian horror usually involving zombies.

Gray I must admit that I am an avid fan of zombie fiction. Due to my insatiable desire for a great dystopian zombie read though, the pickings are getting slimmer and slimmer. I stumbled across this novel recently and purchased it in the hopes that it would be a compelling read. Now that I’m finished I can wholly attest that this is a bang up story that was thoroughly enjoyed. From the direct writing style to the multidimensional characters, this writer has a real grasp on how to bring a tale to life. The primary protagonist Kyle was slowly revealed as the story progressed, allowing me to like him more and more as I learned about him. Also, Justin and David were their own distinct characters too and not just some standard genre caricature. Even Torben, the ruthless antagonist of the story was always thrilling to anticipate, especially given his penchant for a particular delicacy once he got what he wanted. In summation, if you’re looking for a well written zombie tale that stands out from the droves of average reading fare, you can’t do better than this one. The vibrant descriptions of the infected and stalkers, a stellar progressive story line, and the need to see what happened to Kyle kept me awake until I read it to the very last page; there’s no better sign of knowing you’re in good hands.

By mlee I've read a lot of zombie books and thought I'd found another good one to add to my list.Pros:1) Liked the premise of the book - a guy trying to get to an isolated farm with the hope of finding safety from the zombies and rebuilding his life.2) The protagonist is a conflicted character, unwilling to trust others because of what he'd already lost.3) The author introduces "stalkers" - humans mutated by the virus who come out at night and hunt people. They are scarier and deadlier than the mindless zombies.Cons:1) Beyond some editing issues, as the story progressed, I found myself not wholly sold on the idea that certain items, like canned food and gas, were still viable and being scavenged by survivors 15 years after the zombie apocalypse.2) Why did the protagonist take 15 years to finally seek out the farm?!3) The protagonist makes more than a few bad decisions that would most likely have him and everyone he's travelling with zombie or stalker food.I really wanted to like the book but, in the end, couldn't bring myself to finish reading it. I might come back at a later time to reread it and hopefully be able to believe that, 15 years later, a world destroyed by the zombie apocalypse still has, among other things, working satellites, technology in the form of a GPRS, and batteries.I'm not a writer, just a voracious reader of zombie books...so kudos to the author for a great effort.

I'm not a fan of first person narrative, but it really worked here--probably because I really liked the main man. I felt a connection with him only a chapter or two into the book. It's a character driven story, and you actually care what happens to them. I felt the characters actions and responses were realistic to their situation. The good guys gave hope for the future; and the bad guys made you root for "team zombie". The book keeps pace and flows nicely from beginning to end, always moving the reader forward. I love a good "journey" story. There were moments of mild gore and some "creep me out" scenes but not "blood for the sake of blood". Foul language was kept to a minimum and used only when necessary. An overall good read for the general population. I highly recommend this book!
