After a son does the unthinkable, how can a mother go on?On October 2, 2006, a gunman entered an Amish one-room schoolhouse, shooting ten girls, killing five, then finally taking his own life. This is his mother's story. Not only did she lose her precious son through suicide, but she also lost her understanding of him as an honorable man. It was a trauma that none should ever have to face. But the biggest headlines came when her Amish neighbors did the unimaginable, reaching out to the family of the shooter with comfort and forgiveness. Today Terri lives in harmony with the Amish and has built lasting relationships beyond what anyone could have thought possible. From the grace that the Amish showed Terri's family from day one, to the visits and ongoing care Terri has given to the victims and their families, no one could have foreseen the love and friendship that have been forged from the fires of tragedy."Caution advised: You won't be able to put this book down once you start reading."--Donald B. Viewing Tragedy through the Lens of Forgiveness- An Incredible Story By Joyclynn School shootings are all too frequently in the headlines, but after the reporters, the analysts and the politicians have moved on, what remains for the families of both the victims and the perpetrator is grief, the unanswerable question "why", and a road that leads either to bitterness or healing.Terri Roberts chose healing after her adult son, Charlie, a married man and the father of three young children, shot ten Amish schoolgirls one October morning in 2006, killing five and wounding the other five, before taking his own life. The Amish response to the Nickel Mines School shooting stunned the world; from the first day it was one of forgiveness, compassion and gracious concern for the family of their daughters' murderer.Terri's book "Forgiven" is a mother's heart-wrenching testimony to the power of that forgiveness, the healing it brought her, and how she learned to surrender to God in circumstances she could not control and had no power to change.Terri's story is gripping and well-written. In a world where grief, tragedy, and evil cannot be avoided, the message Terri Roberts offers is one every person needs to hear. To forgive and (perhaps to be forgiven) is the only path to healing when we suffer because of another person's choices. This book is a must read.I received a complimentary copy of this book for review from Bethany House Publishers. Awesome story of the miracle of forgiveness By Kykimba Forgiven: The Amish School Shooting, A Mother's Love, And a Story of Remarkable Grace by Terri Roberts is an awesome TRUE story of forgiveness.I remember where I was at when I heard of the shootings at Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania, and how I stopped to pray for all the families involved. I couldn't imagine being the mother of either, one of the girls shot on that day, or the mother of the shooter. My heart and prayers went out to both on that sad day, and still does.Terri Roberts is the mother of Charles Roberts, who the world knows as the man that walked into an Amish school in 2006 and shot 10 little girls, killing 5, and then himself. She remembers the loving, caring son she raised, how could he have done such a thing? How can SHE forgive her son?The Amish, show the family and the world what forgiveness is. As God says in his word, we MUST forgive to be forgiven. This is such a heart-warming book written by a broken-hearted mother as she tells how the broken-hearted families helped her. I cried as I read her story, of what forgiveness can do.I highly recommend this book to everyone, as it an awesome story of the miracle of forgiveness! Look for it on the shelves October 6, 2015I received an ARC (advanced readers copy) from Bethany House Publishing and LibraryThing in exchange for my honest review.

By Julius L McCarter Terri Roberts' Forgiven: The Amish School Shooting, A Mother's Love, and a Story of Remarkable Grace is one of the most compelling accounts of the practice of Christian forgiveness and healing that I've read in a long time. The fact that is recounts real lives living Christianly is a testament to the difference that Jesus Christ makes in the real world.Forgiven recounts the events of October 2, 2006, and the Nickel Mines Schoolhouse shooting in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.Forgiveness is at the heart of the Gospel -- that God, in Jesus Christ, goes to the greatest lengths to forgive God's enemies. And what's more: Christians, then, love others -- even our enemies -- as a testament to that Gospel. Forgiveness, in other words, is the Christian practice of the difference Jesus makes in our lives. And the Amish know and practice this forgiveness in a way that stuns the world after the events of October 2, 2006.What makes Forgiven even more compelling is that this story is told from the vantage of one of those most in need of that forgiveness that brings wholeness -- the shooter's family (in particular, Terri is the mother of the shooter). Terri and Chuck Roberts were well-known, well-loved and well-respected in their community and their church. But their lives changed on that day. From their despair, anguish and grief, through trying to understand and make sense of the tragedy and then working to try to bring about healing for their community and family, Teri looks at what forgiveness really means for those extending it and for those receiving it in this little book. The book itself is a real page-turner. I couldn't put it down once I'd started reading. Because Roberts is able to bring readers into the very crux of the matter -- that forgiveness is more than some vague idea of letting the past go. It's the very real practices -- the choice we make day in and day out -- to embrace the other qua other, and seek the wholeness that God envisions for all creation in their particular lives. So at the end of the day, Forgiven is more than a story. It's a call to the larger Church to extend that forgiveness to others -- even those who would kill us -- in our every word and act. That's what really makes Forgiven so compelling. It's more than just a book. It's a way of life that has flesh and blood embodying that life.Which really shouldn't surprise us. Because that's the way God made known forgiveness in the first place -- through the flesh and blood of a man who forgave his enemies and brought peace to those who killed him.__________________I received this free book from Bethany House Publishers in exchange for my honest review here.

I hope that some readers may possibly be interested in these little tales of the Napoleonic soldiers to the extent of following them up to the springs from which they flow. The age was rich in military material, some of it the most human and the most picturesque that I have ever read. Setting aside historical works or the biographies of the leaders there is a mass of evidence written by the actual fighting men themselves, which describes their feelings and their experiences, stated always from the point of view of the particular branch of the service to which they belonged.

I feel confident that I can finally learn the art of tarot By Theodoric I always feel drawn to tarot decks, but very seldom do I find one that works for me. Upon viewing the cards, some of the images looked so unlike what I had previously seen. It was so unusual, yet so fresh and unique. People say that the Raven's Prophecy Tarot isn't a deck for beginners. As a beginner, who could not truly get involved with tarot because of the lack of symbolism and straight-forward meanings, I feel this could not be further from the truth. As I was reading through the various meanings of the cards in the accompanying book, I found that I understood the symbolism the author used quite clearly. There wasn't a lot of silly or boring things about it. It was totally put up front for the aspiring diviner to learn. She talks about her opinion about specific cards and what her cards mean. Because of my experience before, I was hesitant on picking this set up because I felt like I could never understand tarot. People just made things way to complicated before this experience. Now, I feel like I can finally learn how to use tarot properly with confidence because of the clear descriptions. There isn't long entries about what the author thinks. It's short and sweet explanations about the cards and the various key points they possess in a general reading. I cannot wait to dive into this set!

Overall this is a nice product from Llewellyn. The cards are good quality. The accompanying book is excellent. I think because Stiefvater is an author, the guidebook is just that much better for her writing. There are black and white images of the cards in the book which is my preference. The text is in-depth with added insight from the author about the journey she took in the making of the cards. This deck has some unusual representations. One of my favorites is the Magician. Instead of seeing a full figure, we are offered a hand that has tattoos on it. Then Strength is that same hand closed in a fist. I liked the continuity of the hands throughout this deck. Here and there were slight (to me) misses in terms of meanings. The Star card was the most glaring for me. I pride myself on not being too much of a traditionalist but I guess we all have our stumbling blocks. Instead of a woman kneeling or standing near water, we have stars in the sky reflecting in water below.Overall, this deck has a dark, brooding atmosphere. Stiefvater has chosen to use shadow and light to good effect. While I might not recommend this for a Tarot beginner, I think it will make an excellent addition to anyone's collection. It probably won't be one that I will read for my clients with, but I can see using it for meditative and magickal work.

I own several tarot decks and have been doing readings for myself and others for about fifteen years, so I'm definitely not a newbie. I was a bit hesitant to purchase them because although I love Maggie Stiefvater's amazing Raven Cycle series, I have been burned on bad tarot decks before. I hate to buy decks site unseen, so I really hesitated and agonized over my decision. But zero regrets over here. Even better than the cards themselves are the book that they come with, which gave me new insights into aspects of cards that I truly never thought of before. Thank you Maggie Stiefvater for reinvigorating my flagging interest in tarot and refreshing my perspective. Kudos!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Bad Trip! By Amazon Customer This is the complete review as it appears (http://ianwoodnovellum.blogspot.com/2015/05/the-field-trip-by-ra-andrade.html) at my blog dedicated to reading, writing (no 'rithmatic!), movies, & TV.Ross is a young man who is taking flying lessons from Ernie - flying helicopters. Ernie is an odd, older guy who hints to Ross that he should as ask out his daughter, Penny! Ross shies away from that, not being very good with girls - so he says. He's not going to be around anyway because he has a summer trip to Vermont planned. The book is 250 pages overall, but it starts on page five, ends on 246, and the lines are widely-spaced, so the effective length is less than the 240 or so pages it would seem to be at first glance. It's titled The Field Trip but evidently isn't friendly to trees! Not in the print version, anyway! Maybe that's why Ross keeps on insisting that it's a research trip. Ernie has mentioned to him that a war buddy of his who lives up there has been reporting odd goings on: lights in the sky (LITS - a staple of UFO folklore) at night and military activity in the air during the day.I didn't get Ross. At first I thought he was in his late teens or at best, early twenties, but he turned out to be thirty five, which was a big surprise. He's a teacher evidently in some sort of a community college (the novel is unclear), and he's still living with his mom. He has, effectively, a non-existent dating history, but this seems to be changing when Marsha, one of this students asks to meet with him on the evening of the last day of classes, to discuss his views on virtual evolution. The major who appears in chapter three is a bit of a cliché. He's chewing on an unlit cigar? Is that even allowed in the US army these days? He felt like something out of a comic book. The writing that introduced him needed some work, too. For example, this sentence: "Clenching the cigar between his bared teeth, the major grimaced." If you have a cigar between your bared teeth you're pretty much grimacing to begin with. After the disastrous dinner where Marsha gets both wine and chocolate mousse on her, she nevertheless invites Ross back to her apartment to continue the discussion. As he arrives, bringing pizza, she greets him wearing literally nothing but a sheet robe. I'm sorry but this is nonsensical. Yes, he's been her teacher, but she doesn't know him, and she greets him dressed (or more inappropriately, undressed) like that? The reason she does this is to seduce him, and it works because he has zero self control and even less self-respect. After a rather odd and somewhat inaccurate conversation about evolution, she retires to the bedroom, calls him down there and he enters her room to find her naked on the bed. This moron doesn't even question her motive, much less her physical health, and immediately has unprotected sex with her.I'm sorry, but at this point I could not stand to read this novel any more. I'm not a fan of juvenile sex romps; I like intelligent stories about intelligent characters, and this clearly wasn't one. I can't recommend it based on the small portion I read.

The field trip By Clare O'Beara The early part describes a botany professor who is taking helicopter flying lessons in Indiana, when he and his instructor see another chopper brought down by a storm gust. This rescue mission is hair-raising and holds our attention well on the work-minded professor when he gets back to class. A handsome mature student asks for her grade and asks to chat theories with him over dinner. All he's got on is preparations for a field trip, so somewhat against his better judgement he agrees. She's rather obviously making a play for him, but what's not to like?My sympathy for the professor ebbed fast as he is made use of by one obnoxious woman after another. Then the soldiers who have been glimpsed at intervals start hunting the professor on his field trip, and we get some outdoor survival scenes so well worn as to be threadbare. After which a companion starts talking about a telepathy device. Now, I love SF, but I don't leave it to halfway through the novel to make it clear that it's an SF story. And yes, it becomes clear that it is SF.The writing style somehow doesn't suit me and I didn't really get into it. Maybe I just like my botany professors a bit more intelligent. But other readers may have a laugh; I certainly don't feel it's meant to be taken too seriously.I received a copy for an unbiased review.

By Amazon Customer Professor Ross Barton is a botany expert, single, eccentric, and very alone, has decided to go on a Research Trip. His Mother keeps calling it a field trip, and thus a very important research trip became coined a "field trip". His Mom would like him to find a nice girl and get married as she feels he is well past old enough for a wife.Ross starts dating a girl, but he really has some suspicions. Putting them all aside, he heads off on his trip, warned that there are some strange going-on's in the sky and area where he is headed. While trying to reach the forest he will be working in, he runs into the most usual woman he's ever met. Her name is Jay, and he keeps running into this hostile, odd person, and her very odd pet, in a box. This "cat" and this woman are so strange that Ross can't help but aid her in every way he can.Soon they find themselves of the trip of a lifetime, with Military in the area, and strange objects, things that don't add up, and a story that I really enjoyed! You can call this book a tad old-fashioned Sci-Fi in some ways, and frankly, I really liked that about it! I did not want to put this book aside. My copy came from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review and nothing more.

When the International Trucker's Union (ITU) has been on strike for over a year, "Sean Irish" MacSween, a loyal and dedicated union representative, knew there was something terribly wrong. There was more trouble than ITU President Joseph Pinata was letting on to the union executive board and he had to find out what. After Irish MacSween's union colleagues were involved in a brutal attack and murdered, he found himself working with the FBI's unconventional and audacious head of organized crime, Jack Casey. Together, with a few of his trusted union bargaining team members, they investigate the possible ITU's president and executive board members involvement in possible tax evasion, embezzlement of union funds, fraud, extortion, drug trafficking, prostitution and other seedy deeds. As they dig deeper into the investigation they discover that the president and executive board members are directly involved with organized crime and the biggest financial disaster America has seen in decades. They soon discover that those directly involved will do whatever is necessary to keep a strong hold over the largest trucking union in America, The International Trucker's Union. Now it is up to Irish MacSween and Jack Casey to lead a few loyal union members on the path back to respectability and reconciliation to those in the union that have sacrificed so much.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Excellent First Publication By TechAndWood The story comes to life in the pages of this vividly scripted book. Even more compelling, it's written by a high school junior! The author has a flare for drawing the reader into the scenes, as he describes the settings and characters. The plot is the typical good vs evil, but with several unexpected and entertaining twists. In this story, the main character experiences love, tragic loss, despair, growth, and triumph. It's the type of story that's hard to put down, and will appeal to those who enjoy science fiction mixed with justice and morality. The author clearly has a talent that I hope develops and brings more publishing with it. It's very thoughtful and well written.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Well worth reading! By Moira A Foster I loved the book. It was fast paced, very informative, and never dull. It posed questions about theories of interbreeding within primate species. It always kept you looking to the next chapter. Knowing a bit about Ken's background with animal training I could sense his personal knowledge of the behaviors of these remarkable animals. It leaves the reader asking many questions about interactions between humans, scientists and the animals. We are so often caretakers of wild animals but we wonder if they know more about us than we do of them! I can only look forward to the next book and maybe I will find some answers to my questions!

By Cheryl Donica From the first chapter to the last, this thriller and thought provoking story captured and drew this reader into the plot and the heart-pounding adventures. The author uses words like an artist paints a picture so that the reader can see in the theatre of the mind the settings and events described. The moral dilemma of cross breeding species was well presented and left room for the reader to ponder frequently....is this a novel or could this really be happening in our world today. All in all, an excellent read that left me with the "wanting more" by the end of the story. Or is this the end?

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I absolutely love the writing voice of Kenneth L By Maria Jansson I absolutely love the writing voice of Kenneth L. Decroo in ALMOST HUMAN. The book is a page turner. Once i started reading it I did't want to stop. The language is brilliant, and the story most exciting. I'm not going to give away the story, but what makes it exciting is that it is very real. This is a fiction, however these thoughts might very well be something scientists discuss, and have discussed for long time. There's some parallels (maybe not purposely) with what Hitler tried to achieve with his super race. I rarely read thrillers, but really enjoyed this one.

GEORGE SAND, pseudonyme d’Amandine-Aurore Lucille Dupin, baronne Dudevant (1804-1876).

The Speedicut Papers: Book 5 (1871-1879): Suffering Bertie, by Christopher Joll

About the Author

After serving time at Oxford University and the RMA Sandhurst, Christopher Joll spent his formative years as an officer in The Life Guards. On leaving the Army, Joll worked first in investment banking, then as an arms salesman before moving into public relations.

From his earliest days Joll has written articles, features, short stories and reportage. One such piece of writing led to an early brush with notoriety when an article he had penned anonymously in 1974 for a political journal ended up as front page national news and resulted in a Ministerial inquiry. Most recently, Joll has written the text for Uniquely British: A Year in the Life of the Household Cavalry, an illustrated account of the Household Cavalry from the Royal Wedding to the Diamond Jubilee.

Since leaving the Army in 1975, Joll has also been involved in devising and managing major charity fund-raising events. Most recently, he has focused on devising, writing and directing events for military charities. These include the Household Cavalry Pageant, the Royal Hospital Chelsea Pageant, the acclaimed British Military Tournament, a military tattoo in Hyde Park for the Diamond Jubilee and numerous commemorative events to mark the 100th Anniversary of the First World War. When not writing, directing or lifting the lid on the cess pits of British history, Joll is an adviser on State ceremonial to Independent Television News.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Flashman's Counterpoint - Very Well Rendered!! By PK This book (and the attendant series) provides an excellent (fun and fictional) glimpse into the military and diplomatic intrigues of the Victorian age. Mr. Joll has done his research well and provided plenty of good action and adventure as Speedicut wends his way from adventure to boudoir to more adventure. Having now read the first 5 books, I anxiously await the release of the next volumes in the series. I was in a bit of a funk after Flashman ended his reign over the military adventure fiction titles, but this is a superb counterpoint to Flashy's tales and does make one wonder just how connected the two bounders really were!! Highly recommended.

By Paul Weiss Even the title positively screams space opera! On the simplest level, THE GUNS OF MARS is a rootin' tootin', shoot 'em up grand example of this oldest of sci-fi genres. But, scrape even a single cell off the outer layer of Martin Ingham's intriguing story of the colonization and terra-forming of Mars, our nearest planetary neighbour, and you'll discover a profound forward thinking essay on political revolution, the potential conflicts between science and government as we now know it, the economic and engineering trials of establishing a planetary colony, the ethical dilemmas related to the utilization of modern scientific technology and the ongoing propensity of even the best intentioned politicians to opt for politically expedient solutions to problematic moral issues. And, if you think about it, that's a lot of ground for a novel to cover in a modest 249 pages!Although Morgan Asher was gifted with a very active fantasy imagination, he never dreamed that he might travel to the red planet. Despite his misgivings, when Lorna Forsyth, his new wife, is offered the opportunity to achieve her most fondly held life's ambition, Asher opts to leave Earth behind and accompany her as a member of the recently established pioneering community on Mars. But it isn't long before Asher discovers the sinister presence of the Scientific Fundamentalists, a right-wing group from Earth known as Scifes whose loudly professed loyalty is the human race as a whole and whose publicly stated objective is the technological and biological advancement of people, however possible!Just as a certain petty tyrant from Munich was able to paint an attractive propaganda portrait that persuaded millions of good people to buy into the devastating policies of the National Socialist Party, the Scifes present equally cogent arguments. "Liberty be damned. It's a stupid, outdated concept. A million minds with a million different opinions, all with the right to be wrong. Such chaotic thinking leads to nothing but stagnation and cultural death." But Martin Asher isn't buying honeyed arguments that he believes lead in the direction of repressive eugenic manipulation and brainwashing. Like so many patriots before him, he's prepared to die for his beliefs.Ingham's title, THE GUNS OF MARS, refers to Asher's small gun collection, a personal memento from Earth that Asher chose to take to Mars. The issue of Asher's ownership of the guns quickly escalates into a Martian debate on the second amendment to the US constitution, the right to bear arms, which becomes in turn a metaphor for all of the personal freedoms, fought for and won in the past, that North Americans so complacently take for granted. (And, by the way, I thoroughly enjoyed the very informative sidebar on the physics of firing a gunpowder based weapon in Mars' quite different atmosphere and gravity).THE GUNS OF MARS isn't subtle. But that's OK with me. Along with Martin Ingham, it's my firm belief that future planetary colonization is a given. As a corollary to that assumption, it seems equally clear that the issues of government and personal rights in such a setting must also be carefully considered. If we don't do that, then the likelihood is that a group such as the Scientific Fundamentalists will enter the void and create our reality for us. Imaginative and exciting stories like THE GUNS OF MARS can serve as the basis for that discussion.Highly recommended.Paul Weiss

There was a lot of history and information that is given to the reader but it's handled in an easy way that doesn't make you feel like someone is over explaining. The characters are vivid and you feel attached to them even when only seeing them for short periods of time. There is a lot of political thoughts tied into the book but for me it played very well with the story. I really enjoyed this book and I hope that there may be more in store for these characters and universe!

Ingham creates a future in which humans can use technology to enter a virtual alternate reality while their bodies remain in suspended animation. His protagonist, Morgan Asher, spends a lot of time in that virtual reality and Ingham has two books that describe his adventures there. This story, however, takes place in this universe at a future date. Morgan Asher travels to a Martian colony with his wife and discovers a plot to take over the entire Martian colony. Morgan must find a way to stop the traitors, but doesn't know who he can trust.A trademark of this author is that his plot lines move fairly quickly and so the reader is never left to wade through long sections of dry background material. This book is a page-turner! I was very curious to see what would happen next and so ended up finishing the book in a very short time.I sympathized with Morgan Asher. He is portrayed as a reasonable, albeit world-weary man who's already been subjected to a great many trials and who just wants to settle down for a while. But he's also not one to stand idly by while something evil or unjust is going on, so he is driven to take action. He's a resourceful man who's fiercely loyal to his friends and family and so is able to find it within himself to do whatever it takes to set things right. This makes for an enjoyable reading experience. When I finished the story I felt a little sad that I didn't have a sequel to pick up so I could find out what Morgan would be doing next!Keep your eye on this author. Hopefully we'll be seeing more by him sometime soon.

They’re lazy. They’re unskilled. And now the fate of the Kingdom is in their hands. Tam, Kern, and Merrik are all failing at life: a homeless thief, a disgraced baker’s apprentice, and an incompetent smith. But witnessing a strange ritual in the middle of the night sets them on a collision course with destiny—and with each other. Accused of crimes they did not commit, the boys must band together to clear their names. And in the process, they just might have to do something useful, like battle monsters and save the city. But frankly, that sounds a lot like work. WARNING: May contain secrets, puzzles, mystery and/or adventure.

By RL A tale of discovery that will appeal to any young boy's sense of adventure. The story takes the classic tropes found in fantasy literature of wizard, warrior and thief and fills their shoes with a merry trio of delinquents. Light-hearted and fun, there are consequences to each boy's decisions that add the right amount of depth for a solid YA novel. The world building is fresh and inventive and my favorite part of the book. But Delinquents only scratches the surface leaving me wanting more of the borderland keep of Deneigh and the inner Realm beyond the gates. Looking forward to the continued adventures of Merrik and crew!

He reads various books while on a treadmill and notes moments where he has to stop reading because he's jerked out of the story due to some kind of author error. The majority of these books he reads are so terrible that he can't make it past a minute or two. So I became very curious about his own writing. Surely, being such a keen critic, he would be a masterful author himself. But this is not the case. This book was sophomoric at best. Just because a story is YA or "coming of age" doesn't mean the actual writing should be dumbed down. Often every sentence was the exact same length, exact same structure, making for a very boring rhythm of reading. I also was taken aback by the many grammatical errors. Ordinarily, I don't hold that sort of thing against an author, but in this case I had to since the author considers it a major failure when he finds it in other authors' works. Overall, for wizards, magic, etc Brotherhood of Delinquents was average, run-of-the-mill. I felt like I'd read this story before, and better, from other authors.

Do Trauma and Abuse Have the Last Word?

When someone suffers through trauma, can healing happen? And, if yes, how does it happen? Dr. Diane Langberg tackles these complex and difficult questions with the insights she has gained through more than forty years of counseling those whose lives have been destroyed by trauma and abuse. Her answer carefully explained in Suffering and the Heart of God is Yes, what trauma destroys, Christ can and does restore.

But it s not a fast process, instead much patience is required from family, friends, and counselors as they wisely and respectfully help victims unpack their traumatic suffering through talking, tears, and time. And it s not a process that can be separated from the work of God in both a counselor and counselee. Dr. Langberg calls all of those who wish to help sufferers to model Jesus s sacrificial love and care in how they listen, love, and guide. The heart of God is revealed to sufferers as they grow to understand the cross of Christ and how their God came to this earth and experienced such severe suffering that he too is well-acquainted with grief. The cross of Christ is the lens that transforms and redeems traumatic suffering and its aftermath, not only for the sufferer, but it also transforms those who walk with the suffering. This book will be a great help to anyone who loves, listens to, and seeks to help someone impacted by trauma and abuse. There is no quick fix, but there is the hope for healing through the love of God in Christ.

Suffering and the Heart of God: How Trauma Destroys and Christ Restores, by Diane Langberg

Review “In a poetic, powerful, passionate, and challenging book, Diane Langberg, with her many years of counseling experience, takes us on a disturbing (and healing) journey into the hearts of the survivors of many different types of terrible trauma all over the world—into our own bent and broken hearts, and then into the heart of an amazing, loving God who was humiliated, crucified, and abandoned so that we (and the whole creation) might be healed and delivered from the power of evil. This is a superb master-class in counseling and pastoral care with a gifted, experienced, and wise therapist.”Richard Winter, MD, Therapist and Professor of Practical Theology and Counseling, Covenant Theological Seminary“Through this book, Dr. Langberg names one of the most insidious threats to spiritual health in our generation: trauma and the wounded heart. While disturbing, her unrelenting campaign identifies the next‘mission field’ of the church, those who are suffering silently. This book is for all who hunger to help a loved one, congregant, or client apply the truth of God’s Word as a healing ointment to the hidden anguish that trauma leaves in its wake.”Roy Peterson, President, American Bible Society“This book reflects the glory and love of God throughout forty years of counseling experience. Diane is a masterful teacher and counselor for victims of abuse and violence. Reflecting Christ, she inspires new and experienced counselors and encourages them to bring the love of God to suffering hearts. This book is a masterpiece.”Luciene Schalm, President of REVER (Restoring Lives, Equipping Restorers) Ministry, Brazil; missionary of Comunidade Cristã Siloé“We live in a broken world and evil is real. Where the true light of the gospel of Christ goes, the darkness of evil in this world retreats. William Wilberforce reflected the character of Christ into the eighteenth century British Empire and faithfully led the fight against slavery for forty years until it was outlawed. Diane Langberg has for forty years looked into the eyes of those wounded by evil and been a powerful voice for healing, justice, and truth. This book is a place of insight, wisdom, encouragement, and challenge for the body of Christ to love our precious Lord and to reflect his heart and love to the brokenhearted.” Greg Pritchard, PhD, Director of European Leadership Forum, President of Forum of Christian Leaders“Diane Langberg has seen the effects of trauma all over the globe from Rwandan survivors of genocide, to inner city kids plagued with PTSD, to suburban moms trapped in violent marriages, to middle schoolers who cut themselves just to feel something, to big steeple pastors in American churches. Suffering is real and it really hurts body and soul. In Suffering and the Heart of God, Diane Langberg never diminishes the pain of suffering, but neither does she despair. By looking to the suffering of the cross of Christ, Diane Langberg leads us to hope and healing.”Frank A. James, PhD, DPhil, President, Biblical Theological Seminary“This book is a powerful invitation into the fellowship of the suffering, a reparative work of the vulnerable, afflicted, and abused. Dr. Langberg is gentle and caring to the victims, confrontational to the abusers, and challenging to the church, which often fails to be a refuge. As a therapist and trainer, this is the best manual I’ve seen on what a therapist’s heart should look like. A good portion of the book is dedicated to teaching how not to be consumed by the evil in this world, pointing to Christ who can offer restoration to all.” Stefana-Ioana Racorean, Family psychotherapist and trainer, Dianoia Institute of Family Therapy and Systemic Practice; The Association of Christian Psychologists in Romania“As someone who has prosecuted, investigated, and confronted child sexual abuse for over twenty years, I have encountered dark suffering up close. As a Christian, I have spent many hours agonizing how to reconcile such suffering with a God who calls himself “love.” Suffering and the Heart of God is an amazing book that does a masterful job in helping to see suffering through the heart of a loving God who knows and understands suffering and the pain it creates. This book brings hope to the sufferer who wonders where God is in the midst of it all. It’s a must-read!”Boz Tchividjian, JD, Executive Director, GRACE (Godly Response to Abuse in the Christian Environment)“I challenge you to name a more influential Christian psychologist today than Dr. Langberg. This is not hyperbole! While an impressive communicator, brilliant thinker, and an astute therapist, the real reason for her influence is her willingness to be a student first—of broken people, of herself, and of God. Too often influential leaders spend much time touting themselves. This book will show you something different, in that you will see more of God and his heart for suffering people than you will of Dr. Langberg—just as she would want it.”Philip G. Monroe, PsyD, Professor of Counseling & Psychology, Biblical Seminary Graduate School of Counseling and Global Trauma Recovery Institute“God never wastes a wound. He is in the midst of our darkest moment revealing himself—full of love, truth, hope, and healing. This book is an absolute treasure—a gift of grace to us all.”Tim Clinton, President, American Association of Christian Counseling“Diane Langberg brings to these moving essays decades of experience working with trauma survivors in the United States and abroad. This is no arms-length reflection on the nature of human suffering. Throughout, she repeatedly points her readers to Jesus Christ, the Suffering Servant, who is the only hope for victim and perpetrator alike—and for the counselor who desires to be used by God to make a difference amidst terrible brokenness and sin.”Michael R. Emlet, MDiv, MD, Faculty and Counselor, the Christian Counseling and Educational Foundation (CCEF); author of CrossTalk: Where Life and Scripture Meet“Do not read this book unless you are genuinely open to being led by the Holy Spirit to become more involved in ministering ‘to the least of these’ in Christ’s name. Dr. Langberg has written a powerful and thorough summary of the complex reality of trauma in our world today. She has described Christ’s Gethsemane weeping and his Calvary caring for those who are wounded and needy, and she calls us to weep and to watch and to care with him. She challenges us—Will we weep and watch and care, or will we sleep?”Dr. Samuel Logan, Associate International Director, The World Reformed Fellowship“As a Rwandan who lived through genocide, experienced my own trauma, and witnessed trauma for my people and my clients, I know firsthand the truth of what Diane teaches in this book. Until you understand the psychology of evil, sin, and suffering, many things will remain hidden and unanswered, but Christ can transform lives affected by emotional trauma into instruments to restore life and turn victim into victor. Thank you, Diane, for addressing this difficult and often hidden topic.” Baraka Paulette Uwingeneye, President, Rwandan Association of Christian Counselors; Director of Aftercare, International Justice Mission, Rwanda “Diane drops insightful one-liners like others drop names. I remember the first time I heard her describe trauma as the ‘mission field of the twenty-first century.’ Suddenly, everything we were grappling with in the field made sense. A thousand lightbulbs went off. Synapses clicked. That one sentence opened up a new direction in my personal life and vocation. Read at your own risk because there’s no going back to the way life was before.”John Walter, President, African Leadership; cofounder of The Trauma Healing Institute“When I get the chance to listen to or read Diane Langberg’s work, I take it. Of the five greatest talks I’ve heard in my sixty-eight years, she gave two of them. Her writing inspires. She is as tough-minded as people come, never underestimating the horrors of life. But walking with her through those horrors inspires me with hope. Because Diane walks with Jesus, and where Jesus is, there is hope. Suffering and the Heart of God: How Trauma Destroys and Christ Restores will turn your heart more fully to God in the midst of the evils and mundane cares of the world that you face. Please read it.”Everett L. Worthington, Jr., Author of Moving Forward: Six Steps to Forgiving Yourself and Breaking Free from the Past“Stepping into the trenches with those whose lives have been blown apart by the heinous business of human trafficking means you’re battling alongside them on many fronts: past, present, and future. The terrain is dark and hostile, and the Enemy seems to have won. But, as Langberg artfully reminds us, we are but chaplains in this war. The battle is the Lord’s and the victory is certain. Be of good courage and press on!”Jeanne L. Allert, MEd, Founder and Executive Director, The Samaritan Women

Hurst “I think a look at suffering humanity would lead to the realization that trauma is perhaps the greatest mission field of the twenty-first century.”“As the people of God we have been called in any ways to serve as the rescue workers of this world. We are invited into the fellowship of the sufferings of Christ. That means we are called into the place of darkness and death because that is where he went.”In .41 second Google will bring up over 201 million search results for the word suffering. At every moment of the day there are thousands and thousands of people suffering all around the world. While one person is experiencing a high moment in their life there are thousands of others experiencing deep and painful suffering at the same time.We cannot avoid suffering in our own lives. Pretending, as some religions teach, that is does not exist is no help. In a world full of sin it is only a matter of time before a person experiences suffering. When we do experience it we need ways to deal with it from people who are capable of helping us.Bringing understanding about and the healing only Christ can offer to victims of suffering and trauma Diane Langberg has written Suffering and the Heart of God: How Trauma Destroys and Christ Restores (New Growth Press, 2015). Langberg has counseled trauma victims the world over for over forty years and works with a team of experienced counselors across numerous fields to help hurting people. There are three reasons why Langberg’s book is a must read for all professional and church counselors. First, Langberg’s forty years of trauma counseling gives her a unique perspective and vast amounts of knowledge, wisdom and skill in working with trauma victims. Her experience with a variety of trauma situations has given her a picture of the evil that suffering brings into peoples lives. From dealing with domestic abuse in the US to helping the victims of the Rwanda genocide, she has an authority like very few others in her field. As a result of her vast experiences, Langberg is able to present the reader with a picture of the suffering in trauma from a multitude of angels. Langberg covers everything from the psychology of suffering, the spiritual effects of suffering, living day to day with suffering, grief, the church and abuse, domestic violence, and even the role shame plays in trauma. This books is a chance to sit at the foot of a uniquely qualified counselor. The second reason this book is so good is because of Langberg’s ability to apply the gospel to victims of trauma. Central to the hope she offers in her counseling is the reality and power of the resurrection of Christ. The suffering that trauma can take people into the pits of despair. It can take them to the grave. Jesus went to the grave Himself because of and for our sin and the sin of others. He rose out of the grave to new life and that resurrection life is available to us; to those who are suffering and experiencing trauma. When all seems lost as a result of our suffering we can be found in Christ because of His suffering. The final reason this book is a must read is because Langberg of the challenge it is to those who are counseling victims of trauma. The primary reason, she argues, that we avoid dealing with suffering is because of our own egocentrism. Not only do we want to avoid experiencing suffering in our own lives but we want to avoid it in the lives of others. We don’t want to touch the suffering of others or be touched by it. We want to distance ourselves from the sin that causes the suffering in the lives of others but in doing so we forget that it effects us as well. Langberg writes"We are not healthy doctors working with sickness. We are sick doctors who are trying to grasp the nature and impact of a life-threatening disease that has invaded our own souls, minds, and hearts. Whatever this disease has done to our so-called patients, it has done or can do to us." (30)Christ was not egocentric when it came to the suffering of humanity. The Son of God emptied Himself of the position He had at the right hand of the Father and took on human sinful flesh in order to redeem us from its weaknesses that our sin brought on in order to bring us back to the Father with Him. This is how we are to follow Christ when it comes to helping others with their suffering. We walk and live among the dead because that is what Jesus did for us. We offer the hope of the resurrection to the dead because that is Jesus did for us. We realize that as ministers of this resurrection hope we are as much in need of it as those to whom we offer it to in the name of Christ.Suffering and the Heart of God is an amazing book that will give readers much to chew on with regard to suffering, its victims, and the hope of the gospel. Part of the power of her approach is that she is not writing from a merely academic perspective. This is not a clinical textbook with pat and stock observations and answers. This is a book borne out of lived experience with suffering in her own life and the life of others. This is a book that proclaims the superior healing power of the gospel over the power suffering can have in our lives.I received this book for free from New Growth Press for this review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. This offering by Diane Langberg is a profound assessment of God’s redemptive working in the hearts and lives of sufferers, and in particular, of trauma victims. In it, Dr. Langberg distills her impressive resume and experience into a thoughtful and helpful book that belongs on every counselor’s bookshelf. Langberg integrates a beautiful Christian orthodoxy, a vast knowledge of the counseling world, and an adept capacity for storytelling into a helpful whole. This book reads at times like a prophet, at times like well-written case studies, and at times like Christology. Reading this book seriously will force you onto your knees in prayer and into the lives of the broken. I took several months to read this book, in part, because I saw my own need to absorb it well.Let me put it plainly: If you minister in any capacity, you cannot afford to not read this book.To see the rest of the review, visit: http://www.thinkcredo.org/blog/suffering-and-the-heart-of-god-a-review

It brings God's love and compassion to the forefront unlike any book I've ever read on the subject of trauma. She does go into deep and involved discussion on various subjects and it may be too much for some, however, some chapters/paragraphs can be skimmed or skipped entirely if it doesn't pertain and you can still get great benefit I feel.
