Not good enough…the words echo in Madison Baron’s mind as the darkness presses her to be thinner, more beautiful—somehow more attractive to her peers. A junior in high school, she is facing life without her childhood love, Luke Johnson, who is off to college in the Midwest. Alone with her insecurities, Madison yearns for acceptance—until Miles that is. Will a relationship with this new student on campus be the answer she seeks? And how will his resistance to her Christian faith affect her future? As the two of them grow closer and closer, something happens inside of Madison, and she finds herself more insecure than ever. Gazing into the mirror at her thinning face and trendy makeup, she hopes no one sees the fear behind her smile. The sixth book in the Sandy Cove Series, Behind Her Smile, touches hearts of young and old alike with the message of God’s redemption and love, reminding us that our true sufficiency and value come from Him and Him alone. Rosemary Hines has written a wonderful coming of age story that perfectly illustrates the beauty of God's grace in the forgiveness of others and the importance of applying that same loving grace toward forgiving ourselves. A true reminder of the power of love! ~ Susan J. Calloway Knowles, Licensed Psychotherapist, Radio Host, Author

Reading one of her Sandy Cove series is like visiting family. Indeed, each one of the series features various characters of the family with all of their failings, foibles, and faith through the generations as they develop and age.Behind Her Smile stars Madison, Joan Walker’s 16-year-old great-granddaughter, the adopted child of Michelle (featured in another of the series). One of Michelle’s 8th grade students bonded with her; the student wanted her out-of-wedlock child to have a good home—something she knew she would not be able to provide, but her teacher would. One of the unfortunate effects of having been adopted is that a child may develop a sense of low self-esteem and/or an expectation or anticipation of rejection regardless of good parenting. This does not happen in every case, but it was the case for Madison. When her life-long friend Luke went away to college, peer pressure and that fear of rejection became full blown and drove her into a fascination with weight loss and the latest fashions...and then she made some poor choices in friends. The story is filled with all the drama and angst of all too common teenage struggles to find identity against a backdrop of the strength, faith and confidence of mature adults who are ready to offer wisdom, comfort, prayer, and/or support as Madison reaches out for it. I loved that adults were able to be vulnerable and share their own failings with the struggling teen without condemnation or condescension. The adults were honest and very real, yet never pushy or preachy, just quietly confident. The writing is a joy. I was never distracted by errors either in the text or with slow spots in the story line—it all flowed beautifully. The characters had depth and substance. They really did feel like family or old friends that you know well because of spending time with them. I also appreciated the Christian witness simply by depicting the lifestyle these people lived. There was no “soap box” presentation. The ending is sweet as the main characters find their way and each other.I would confidently recommend this book to any teenager struggling to find herself. I would also recommend it to the parents of teens because it is a good model for how to help a child through those difficult years without being intrusive or overly “parental.”

I have enjoyed all of the previous books in this series By Karla Hanns I have enjoyed all of the previous books in this series, thus it was no surprise when I LOVED Book 6! As I started to read, it felt as if I had come home to visit my friends. Saying that, it could be read as a stand alone, however, Rosemary's characters had endeared themselves to me in previous books and I had the great desire to find out what had happened while I was away! This author has the ability to touch on sensitive subjects that many of us have encountered in our family lives with compassion and understanding. The problems of our youth are examined in this tale as are the challenges of the parents of these individuals. The characters in this book are well developed in a realistic way so that we can easily identify with them. I could feel the pain, sadness, challenges of each and every one. We are all human and experience difficulties in our everyday lives. Rosemary does an excellent job of presenting the heartache that a parent may experience and how to overcome it.The plot moves quickly with just enough twists and turns to keep the reader glued to the page. Each chapter brings you a bit closer to a solution to the problems . THEN, there is a little bump thrown in to add to the interest level. The theme running throughout this story is one that we all need to heed. God offers us forgiveness and redemption even in our darkest hour. He also gives us the ability to forgive ourselves. This is the promise of God's everlasting love.A great read!! I highly recommend it!This book was provided by the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.

This series has been filled with great stories, great spiritual truths, and applicable themes, but this is by far Rosemary Hines’ best writing.I’m sure you’ve heard the popular saying, “I am enough!” But do you really believe that? If you are relying on yourself for that worth, then you will fall short. But, if you are relying on the forgiveness of God, then yes, you are indeed, “Enough”! In the pages of Behind Her Smile, you will truly find your worth in God’s eyes. This is an awesome display of the forgiveness of Christ! It may be a fictional story, but you will find Truth within these pages. In the beginning of the book I saw it as an awesome book for teen girls who felt the pressure from their peers to “fit in”. As I read farther, I saw it as a book for young women who looked back over their teen years with regret. As I read farther yet into its pages, I saw this as a book for mothers of adolescents who were trying to help their children find their way in this crazy world. By the time I read the last page, I thought, Wow, this book is for everyone! There was so much spiritual food spread out on the table to be feasted upon by all who curled up with the pages of this book. So pull up a chair, open the cover and join in the feast. Your heart will be filled! Your soul will find refreshment.
