From the Author Like the first book, Amidst Dark Satanic Mills takes place in an alternate version of the 19th Century, where the Solar System is under a mostly beneficent and progressive Pax Britannia. I wanted to give the reader a greater view of that Solar System. For the most part, it adheres to the tenants of Victorian astronomy. One of those tenants was the existence of the planet Vulcan. Not the well-known planet from the famous television franchise but a small planet orbiting the Sun between the Sun and Mercury. The reader is taken to Vulcan, where the nefarious supranational organization MEDUSA has started building its ultimate weapon. In the process, the reader visits Mercury, gets a side trip to the Asteroid Belt, and, of course, another look at life on Mars. In the first book, the reader got a glimpse of London; here, the reader is afforded an even longer look at 19th Century Paris and all the changes brought about by the Industrial Illumination, as they refer to it. We also learn a bit more about the Alexandrian Diffusion, which, more than anything else, turned the course of Empire. However, the book is not about wondrous places, skewed history or epic adventures; it is about the characters who live in that universe, and I think you will like them, even the black hats of the story. In case you're curious, the title of the book comes from the famous poem by William Blake, a poet well worth getting to know.
About the Author Ralph E. Vaughan is the author of several Sherlock Holmes novels and stories, such as "The Adventure of the Ancient Gods," "The Dreaming Detective," and "Sherlock Holmes and the Coils of Time." He is the creator of the popular Paws & Claws series, which began with "Paws & Claws: A Three Dog Mystery," in which three amazing dogs protect their neighborhood, thwart the evil plans of the nefarious Feral Gang, and occasionally save the world; the series continued with "A Flight of Raptors," and "K-9 Blues." The fourth book in the series, "The Death and Life of an American Dog" finds the dogs saving an Army dog, and in the fifth, "Dogs of S.T.E.A.M.", the dogs travel back to a steampunk version of London in 1887. Most recently, he authored "Shadows Against the Empire," an interplanetary steampunk adventure set in 1882, and a second steampunk novel, "Amidst Dark Satanic Mills." He is a long-time resident of Chula Vista, California, which is the setting of "Paws & Claws." He is married and has two children, a daughter who is a playwright and a son who is a conductor for the BNSF.

An attempt to rule the solar system by evil By Capot An excellent continuation of the adventures of Captain Robert Folkestone and Sergeant Felix Hand. This time there are evil forces determined to rule the solar system and it's up to them to put a stop to it. I won't go into the specifics of the book but needless to say there is a lot of action. If you like the Steampunk genre or if you want to just find out what it's like, then pick up this book and give it a read. I'm patiently looking forward to the next book in the series.

Perfect summer reading By Peggy C A welcome return for Captain Robert Folkestone, Sergeant Felix Hand and the indomitable Lady Cynthia Barrington-Welles. Perfect summer reading, and so much more fun to imagine it all in your head! Folkestone is the gallant British officer, but for my money, Felix Hand is the soldier I'd want backing me up. Can't wait for their next adventure.
