I eventually read it as a Kindle Unlimited subscriber because it was convenient for me to read it with the Kindle App. I did provide the author with my comments via email, but I apparently should have left those comments in the Amazon book review section for that book. Anyway, here they are:I found the prologue confusing but withheld judgment until I finished reading the entire book. The prologue made a lot more sense in a second reading. There were numerous grammatical errors throughout the book. At times, incorrect names were inserted. This I attribute to sloppy editing. Those errors are best caught by someone actually reading the book and making corrections as they go. I suggest that someone be designated to do that work since new eyes on the novel can probably catch most of the errors. I also noticed a misuse of the word "memorized" when the actual word meant was "mesmerized."It was difficult keeping track of the numerous characters. I occasionally had to backtrack and reread certain segments to confirm names and relationships. It got a lot easier as I progressed through the book. If actually became a lot easier after most of the fringe characters were killed off.At times, this novel had the feel and readability of a young adult novel. I'm not sure if that was the author’s intention or not. I struggled through the first third of the book, but the flow greatly improved as I went along. It actually had the feel of the "Lensmen" series by E.E. "Doc" Smith in scope and descriptions. That is not a bad thing since I enjoyed the space opera novels by Smith.Frankly, if I hadn't committed to reading and reviewing the novel, I would probably have quit after the first few chapters. Ultimately, the book was worthwhile reading and I would like to read a sequel when it becomes available. I've seen a lot worse in other self-published books, so it is a promising beginning for a new series.

Great cover, some quirky interesting story twists. And LOTs of violence, blood and guts, etc. A good read for those that like lots of violence, blood and gutsl. Oddly, imho, the latter part of book almost seemed like a separate novella-sized shared-world-but-still-same story that was tacked onto the the first part, still with all the attendant violence, blood and guts. Parts of book were truly inventive and interesting...apart from the violence, blood and guts stuff, which after awhile, I found somewhat boring...cause after all, how many ways can violence, blood and guts be done?. I found the continuity/story line difficult to follow (possibly it all was just a vehicle for the violence, blood and guts, lol) and struggled to finish the book. Betcha lovers of military-scifi will love all the violence, blood and guts!fyi: I received a free advance reader e-copy of book from StoryCartel in exchange for a review.

Alex McCarthy is the first installment in author’s future series ‘In a Universe Without Stars’ that brings an interesting story combining the elements of fantasy and science fiction in a unique way.The main character, a guy named Cole, is going to experience a serious car accident, consequently becoming a disabled person - an invalid. Given how fanatic he was before about the exercise, this new situation will completely destroy his life and Cole is going to lose his will for living. He will try suicide with the pills, but instead killing himself Cole will wake up completely changed, strong and even with some new abilities that can hardly be called normal. While seeking for an explanation, Cole will become part of the impossible scenario that could mean the end of whole human race - an alien invasion. Using his new powers, Cole is going to try preventing this worst threat for planet Earth but will realize that actually he is only a figure in the game that is so huge and difficult to fully understand…J. Alex McCarthy wrote a novel with lot of action, violence and blood – a story that uses a motive of great accidental hero and the many times used motive of alien invasion this time delivered in a bit different manner. As aforementioned, in his descriptions the author is fully explicit therefore the reader can expect graphic display of violence behavior and lot of bloody scenes.Though in the many ways is obvious 'Skyeater' is self-published novel, I will not be too critical because this is far from what is often found in a self-published industry. Yet, in good faith I can advise author to pay attention in the following extensions on the plot continuity - because of many action scenes sometimes can be hard to follow the overall story.I would say 3 and half stars but because of some good story twists let’s call it four.I was given a copy of this book by the author for the purpose of unbiased review, while all the presented information is based on my impressions.
