That's the premise for Zuidema's "The Dread Acolyte". It's a fast-paced story set in a dark fantasy world, where the mercenary warrior Torhagon, one of the goddess Isatara's chosen ones, is recruited for a mission that will change him forever. The book heads straight into the action, with a party of adventurers journeying across the lands, investigating a mysterious disappearance. The world of Exia contains some recognizable fantasy tropes, but Zuidema has enough original twists, characters and scenes up his sleeve to make this story engaging. The theme of new gods at war with the old gods, and the possibility of humans ascending to become more powerful beings in the service of the gods, is something that sets this novella apart. I also liked the sprinklings of humour -- descriptions of Torhagon's various irritations and observations about his party members made me chuckle out loud. However, I would like to know even more about Torhagon and the world he inhabits - but as this is a novella, not a full novel, I guess I'll have to wait it out.The main part of the book is powerful fantasy action -- if you like video games, the fights will seem like something from a (good) game. The last chapters have a more relaxed pacing and we get more into the heads of the characters, and a glimpse of the greater world and cultures within it.If you're looking for a short, entertaining read, The Dread Acolyte sure fits the bill. I'm looking forward to the next installment in the series!
