In this evocative tale of suspense from CWA Gold Dagger winner Peter Dickinson, a British diplomat’s wife in Nigeria inadvertently precipitates a senseless tragedy, and six decades later, her son becomes caught up in a maelstrom of violent political corruption Filmmaker Nigel Jackland has come to northern Nigeria to work on a new project: a documentary based on the personal diary entries of his mother. Sixty years have passed since Betty Jackland first accompanied her husband, Ted, to this colonial African backwater, resolving to be a perfect helpmate and wife to Britain’s district officer in the emirate of Kiti.   But Betty’s fascination with the local Kitawa tribe, innate sense of justice, and irrepressibly independent spirit mean she could never turn a blind eye to the suffering of oppressed women—particularly the abused wives of the ruling emir. She never imagined that her strong words and actions could have violent consequences in the shadow of Tefuga Hill—or that the echoes of the tragedy would resound dangerously in the life of her own son many years on.   Linking two stories separated by more than half a century and relating them in alternating chapters, Tefuga is an enthralling, evocative, and suspenseful tale of corruption, imperialism, race, and murder. A master of both style and substance, Dickinson brilliantly re-creates times and places in stunning detail, transporting readers to an Africa so remarkably realistic they can almost feel the equatorial winds on their faces.

Tefuga: A Novel of Suspense (The James Pibble Mysteries), by Peter Dickinson

From Publishers Weekly Sixty years after his mother, Betty Jackland, came from England to tribal, backwater, colonial Nigeria to marry his district-officer father, Ted arrives to make a documentary film based on her diary. Its pages recreate that time in detailthe life of an isolated woman in the overwhelmingly man's world of the British Empire; the ways of the resident Kitawa and Hausa people; the ambiguities of "indirect rule"; Betty's identification with native servants (including a houseboy who later rises to the rank of spiritual leader). Hovering over the shadowy events of the past and over a present steeped in corruption and violence is a mysterious shaping event toward which the action moves. In 1921, in the shadow of Tefuga hill, the new emir selected by the British is killed by the Kitawa women. Given its climactic significance, this act is strangely undramatizedoccurs, in fact, offstage. While prolific writer Dickinson (The House Party delivers a smoothly phrased, interesting narrative, it is somewhat marred by a sense of anticlimax and a profusion of pedestrian detail. Copyright 1986 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review “[An] amusing and elegantly structured tour de force.” —The New York Times   “Comparisons with Isak Dinesen are inevitable and Tefuga does not suffer by such comparisons.” —Houston Chronicle   “For sheer storytelling power, Tefuga is wonderful. The characters are alive, the setting dazzles, and the blazing Africa sun almost brings a rash to the back of your neck.” —The Washington Book World   “Stunning . . . [Dickinson’s] descriptions are extraordinarily vivid . . . and his climax is obliquely told yet an unforgettable moment of horror.” —Time   “Peter Dickinson’s technique is dazzling, and he writes as though there were witchdoctors present at his christening.” —The Guardian   “The works of Peter Dickinson are like caviar—an acquired taste that can easily become an addiction.” —Time

This is not particularly a mystery, though Dickinson is a talented mystery writer and a murder occurs. This is a beautifully drawn and utterly convincing portrait of life in colonial Africa and in the conflicts and misunderstandings that plague well-meaning people dealing with cultures outside their own. I spent many years in post-colonial Africa and based on my experiences, TERFUGA is a masterpiece and a haunting work of literature about the colonial situation. It is pertinent that Dickinson grew up in colonial Africa and knows whereof he speaks.

Narrative necessity and the entire flavor of the story requires the "key event" be out the main narrative flow.Additional enjoyment for those who like Masterpiece Theatre type programs will be pleased that one of the plot strands has the characters' filming one. Additional humor.

Dickinson deftly Inserts the reader into the complex, convoluted and short-sighted (indirect) British rule in sub-Saharan Africa. That short-sighted (indirect) rule parallels the flaws of the U.S. and others ineptly dealing with the tribal antipathies of the Middle East. Read, be wowed by its intensity and be sad.for the waste of humanity in war. Another winner from a writer of global ethics.

“Are You Still A Priest?” recounts the life of a priest rooted in Jesus and ahead of his time in the 21st century church. Father Kleba embodied Pope Francis long before Jorge Bergoglio, S.J. was Pope Francis. If the Nuns on the Bus had longed for a caravan, Father Kleba would have organized the Priests on the Bus. While he was actively living the gospel of social justice, he was also ministering to fifteen children whose stories are told here. One child died in his presence. “Are You Still A Priest?” tells a pastor’s story of sensible and saintly approaches to address the issues of our time in the church and the world healing both personal relationships and wounded Mother Earth.

Are You Still A Priest?: True Stories of Tension and Trust, by Rev. Gerald J Kleba

Review "Kleba reminds us that loving children is something that followers of Jesus are supposed to do." -Bill McClellan, Columnist, Saint Louis Post-Dispatch "The stories in this book are about the lives of some young people who were energized because of the emotional caring shown by a priest who was not afraid to reach out to them. ... Surely this book, so genuinely crafted, will help revive some of the faith, hope, love and trust in all healthy and morally intact mentors of our children." -Michael J. Mayer, Ph.D., Psychologist and Parent

About the Author In his forty-eight year career as a priest of the Archdiocese of St. Louis, Father Gerald Kleba has served in a wide variety of missions as a hospital chaplain, retreat master, university professor, and primarily as a parish priest. In this capacity he has ministered mostly in economically depressed areas of inner-city communities. He has also served in a rural parish and sprawling new suburb. His ministry spans the excitement of Vatican II to the present with the stunning retirement of Pope Benedict XVI and the surprising election of Francis as Bishop of Rome.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. but even more so of joy, happiness By Amazon Customer The stories in Father Gerry Kleba’s book, “Are You Still a Priest?” are stories of hurt and sadness, but even more so of joy, happiness, faith, hope, trust and, most of all, peace. The locations of his stories range from rural parishes to inner city parishes to affluent parishes, from university campuses to hospitals. I, personally, have heard some of Father Gerry’s stories from him and as I read them in his book I felt as if he were talking directly to me. Father Gerry’s book asks the question, “Are You Still a Priest?” and I hope that when people read his book, it will answer the question I am sometimes asked, “Why are you still a Catholic?”

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Inspiring Accounts of a Catholic Priest's Ministry to Youth By Professor Q. One might not expect a book of stories about priestly ministry to be a page turner. But this fast-paced narrative spanning some fifty years proves to be just that. Father Gerald Kleba, priest of the Archdiocese of St. Louis, served in various pastoral capacities in rural, suburban, inner-city, and university settings. As a dedicated servant, the priestly Gerry gives himself repeatedly to circumstances that often swell to mythical proportions. Yet their poignancy touches the heart. An inner-city lad becomes a poster boy. A girl’s baby brother is dying. At her First Communion an alert little girl rescues Kleba’s homily. A disabled boy is a football hero. A student at an elite girls’ high school discovers a need to serve the poor at home and abroad. An impressionable little girl later as an adult wants proudly to be included in Kleba’s book about priestly attention to youth. A lovely university coed is, as Kleba sees her, “a walking manifestation of the church’s social doctrine…. (78).” A young drummer for his parish choir becomes the valedictorian at a prestigious university. Encouraged by a celebrity baseball announcer, a boy overcomes a serious burn. A winsome preschooler and her rambunctious little brother claim heartfelt attention. A toddler is healed of her nearly fatal leukemia. A dying first-grader converses with his favorite movie personality. A celebrated pediatric neurosurgeon helps a boy with a brain tumor. A courageous child, slain by cancer, rests in the arms of his mother. And a fleeting encounter with a high schooler becomes an inspiring memory.Offering challenges and support, snippets from the works of Pope Francis and other gifted writers garnish Kleba’s chapters. The universal nature of such counsel becomes vibrantly exemplified in Kleba’s ministry. In the same vein, his resolute commitment to living and leading according the Catholic Church’s social teachings is constantly evident. What Father Thomas Michel, SJ calls in his foreword the “shamefully true” recent history of clerical/hierarchical abuse of youth in the Catholic Church stands in stunning contrast to the laudable pastoral sensitivity and compassion exhibited in these stories. Kleba’s priestly journey is suffused with his hope in the power of Christ’s own priesthood, the power of redemption and new life. Thus, with this book he strives to show that for the Catholic priesthood and episcopacy, and indeed for the whole Church, “It is time,” as he says, “to rise up out of the ashes (6).”Kleba is a gifted writer/story-teller. He paints vivid word-pictures of the settings in which he has ministered. He recounts with unmuted feeling the inner monologues, a gentle stream of consciousness, that stead him on his priestly way. He nimbly displays heartfelt affection. He colors his stories with whimsical humor and with laughter at himself. His mannerly text is not immune from an occasional expletive or bawdy punchline. He conveys with tenderness his parishioners’ emotions, whether exhilarating or gut-wrenching, and at times provokes to tears. Each chapter holds the reader’s interest, from the first paragraph to the last. His vignettes reveal not only the effects of his care for the youths themselves but usually as well for their families. His ministry to youth is repeatedly family ministry. Siblings and parents of the young people he serves are characteristically recipients of his pastoral dedication. Such influence is typically felt even decades later. Families remain endeared to him, and he delights in how young people once entrusted to his care attain as adults admirable maturity and virtuous bearing. There is in Kleba’s straightforward and humbling accounts of pastoral generosity some self-assurance that accompanies his exuberance. But he is also at times self-deprecating, a priest who in face of the gospel call to abundant charity, confesses fearfully: “I am constantly discovering how little I know of perfect love (xxiii).” Kleba not only in an inspiring way sprinkles Gospel teaching and exhortation throughout his narrative but also, mostly unwittingly, shows how he embodies it. He thrives amid his people, comes alive as a pastor amid his sheep. While reading the book I found myself regularly musing: This is truly what good priests do. Father Kleba thus provides praiseworthy lessons in serving youth and their families. As an exemplary priest he is a model for all Christians. He and his kind deserve widespread acclaim.(The reviewer, Ronald Quillo, is professor emeritus at Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio, Texas.)

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Still a priest—and then some By Peter H. Green Anyone who has met Father Gerry Kleba, despite his towering, six-foot, five-inch frame, is immediately drawn to his personal magnetism, enveloped in his teddy-bear warmth and soon lost in the deep pools of his sincere blue eyes. One soon learns, however, that this attraction is followed by a call—to self-reflection, social consciousness and action to help one’s fellow human beings. On the heels of the many recent, well-publicized sexual abuse offenses by clergy against children, Father Gerald Kleba, drawing on his 48-year career as a parish priest, challenges current notions of the untrustworthiness of Catholic priests. He provides fifteen case studies of children he has known, befriended and helped reach confidence and peace in the face of illness, poverty and misfortune. He shows how extending his humanity toward them, challenging to think beyond limited views of their situations and the outside world, and praying with them to overcome and transcend their self-pity and sorrow has has succeeded in forming bonds with even the most timid and withdrawn of subjects. His method of prayerful reflection, in which he places himself in the position of the other person, draws aout their innermost fears and and applies fearless logic to solutions, wins trust based on mutual respect among his youthful subjects and his hierarchical superiors alike. This highly readable book has a compelling message for Catholics, those of other faiths and nonbelievers as well. Farther Gerry’s testimony instills an unforgettable urge toward faith in humanity, a higher power among his widening flock of followers.--Peter H. Green, Author of Ben’s War with the U. S. Marines

Mindfulness meditation—which emphasizes the quality of attention that combines full awareness with acceptance of each moment, just as it is—is a practice that is uniquely well-suited to helping us strengthen our parenting skills during this this time. This practice—which has gained broad acceptance among family therapists and other mental health professionals, and in schools, for stress and anxiety reduction and behavior modification—helps us to stay calm in tense moments and be less reactive with our children. I enjoy Maria's quirky and funny sense of humor while keeping me in suspense on how she's going to get hersef out of this latest scrape. I enjoyed not having a predictabe ending as I was completley surprised at the end.

Dale First I must disclose the author is a former critique partner and I do like her quirky characters. As for the story: Maria Sebastian is a real estate agent. While showing a horse farm to a client, they find a man apparently trampled to death by champion stud Silver Strutter. It seems the man is the owner of the horse farm and now his wife, who was about to divorce him, inherits the property. It also seems the man was murdered before he was trampled by the horse. Furthermore, nobody liked him.So not only do we have lots of suspects but we also quickly discover that his attorney was murdered two days before him.Into this interesting scenario, we throw in Maria's sometimes-in-town boyfriend Mason, her impetuous cousin (and bombshell) Emily, and Emily's sidekick Rolando who's occasionally on hand to help Maria. And Maris definitely needs help. Not only with the abandoned dog she rescues from a rental property but also with the birds who take up residence in her laundry room. And that's not even mentioning the dry spell between commissions she's having or the bad guy who hits her on the head or the helicopter she has to bail out of.Lots going on and even a new love interest!Nice read!

It was action packed and you never knew what Maria would get into next. I liked that you left the question of what ever happened with Maria and Dallas Alexander? At the end of the book, it seems like Maria is going to hang with Mason but is Dallas still lingering in the background? Will he show up again in the next book? Are you familiar with Clive Clusser’s books? I was a fan initially and read several but after a awhile found that while the details differed the overall theme was repetitive. High tech drama with the fate of the world at risk, saved by miraculous turn of events.I feel you are on a similar track. Real estate agent finds herself in unusual and dangerous situations exacerbated by her mysterious cousin and constantly rescued by mysterious hispanic figure Rolando.I must say this has worked well for Clusser who has sold a ton of books and likely will work for you also.I would prefer to see Maria use more MacGyver solutions to her dilemmas than having Rolando show up so often.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Helpful By Alexandra Marintzer The Social Media Gospel is a great resource for those wanting to have more information about social media sites and how to use them best for your platform. She begins with strategic ways to use social media and how to use it for the growth of the Kingdom, also explaining generationally why to use certain types of social media. Then she moves on to the different social media that is most popular and how we can use them to advance the Kingdom. She finishes with how to make social media work for you and the purposes that God has called you too. In all, the Social Media Gospel helps anyone in ministry who tried to stay away from social media or those who are ready to take the plunge into it. The breakdown of chapter’s are as follows:Chapter 1: Defining Social MediaIn this first chapter she outlines and helps readers understand that social media is a tool to proclaim the gospel and you don’t need to be afraid of it. She helps readers become more comfortable in their social media journey by saying that it is a great tool to see how attitudes and opinions change, grow or weaken, it is the best place to know what the people around you are feeling and gives you a place to share hope of Christ.Chapter 2: Thinking TheologicallyThis chapter starts off by making a very profound statement—that Jesus has no Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest account besides yours, so you should make it count for Him. I think he gets a little too heavy for me in this chapter talking about sacraments. If someone reading this was really, really into theology and the sacraments I can see that this may be helpful. In my opinion this chapter started off with a bang and brought me to wordy and theological boredom pretty fast.Chapter 3: Thinking GenerationallyThis chapter was very interesting to me, for starters generational differences are fascinating, but let’s be careful not to judge too quickly. I have an almost 92 year old grandmother from the “silent generation” that has taught me a thing or two about social media and her presence in social media and what she does for the Kingdom way outdoes me. On the other end saying that because I just make it into the “digital natives” does not mean that anyone should assume that someone my age just innately knows how to use social media or technology. If you stranded me on an island with my children and husband with no technology, I would jump for joy! I do think that is the point of this book, no matter where you are at or what feels natural or unnatural, we have to look and see that social media can and should be used to glorify Him.Chapter 4: Learning stylesI thought that this chapter was excellent, I love that she points out the differences in learning styles and that social media helps us to share His gospel to all different learners! I would also like to add to the chapter that all of us are learners too, the preachers and the head in ministry. Find how you learn best and use her breakdown of social media learning styles and follow some of those to learn for you and your relationship with Christ.Chapter 5: Personality TypesI would just like to point out here that if you look into the different personality types you will learn that some personality types take to technology better than others and some do not take to it as easily, but will catch on and enjoy it. As far as my personality type (INFJ) we notoriously hate technology and try to avoid it at all cost…..so maybe don’t judge an almost 30 year old for wanting to live alone on an island away from technology. I do however agree with her that as an introvert, it is helpful to gain knowledge about a person or situation with social media before I am out in a place of face to face meetings. I think this chapter helps you as an individual realize that how you feel about social media can come from your individual personality and she helps you find ways to utilize social media in a way that fits you.Chapter 6: Virtual Community Is Real CommunityThere are a lot of people that say that relationship are not real or groups are not real because they are online in some form of fashion. What Gould says in this chapter is that they are real, especially for the people that are in that relationship or group/community.Chapter 7 - Chapter 22: Choosing Social mediaThese chapters have been incredibly helpful for me, a social media beginner. She outlines why we should or should not pick blogging, Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube or Snapchat. These chapters are helpful for people who do not have any idea what the social media site is for to the person that wants to start to use their account to proclaim the Gospel in a better and louder way. Inside each of these chapters she also outlines other similar social media sites to the chapter title to give you even more information as a consumer.Chapter 23 – Chapter 30: Making Social Media WorkThe last eight chapters are exactly what the title of this section says; she explains how to make social media work. She explains how to use Twitter chats, how to avoid jargon, how to write content on social media, how to manage conflict on social media and the best practices for digital ministry. While these final chapters were great, for me as a beginner they seemed to be heavy and not as meaningful to me. I did get something from each chapter that helped me, but the depth and wordage got to be too much for my beginner level.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Gould does an excellent job of explaining the “why” of social media in ... By Aaron Duvall Gould does an excellent job of explaining the “why” of social media in a church setting. It’s there, it’s a tool, and it can (and should be used). Individuals who haven’t used, or think they shouldn’t use, social media in the church need this book. Gould fairly brings up many of the “faults” people find with social media and does an excellent job dealing with each. It isn’t real, it undermines the church building, it’s too difficult to learn (Kindle location 259). Gould’s move through the types of social media and how each is helpful and the drawbacks to each was excellent. As with any technologically based book, there are signs of age. Even an updated book such as this second edition, will have aspected that are outdated as soon as it is published. However, despite a few missteps (periscope is barely mentioned once) the included media is well defined and fleshed out. Meredith recognizes the fact that we need to share the Gospel, and we need to share the Gospel in creative and relevant ways. Her passion and desire (as well as knowledge) in this area is well received, and it flows off the pages. I also appreciate that she recognizes that Remember, social media is not something separate, a nice-to-have add-on to your church website.”(Kindle Locations 1447-1448) but it is something that must flow out of the mission, message, and ministry of the church itself. The moments where I would get most frustrated is when Gould would try to connect theologically and scripturally. While I recognize the need for any book containing the word “Gospel” in it to do so, this is where I found Gould to be the weakest. For instance she states “God-inspired Scripture that communicates ethical standards and guidelines for behavior;”(Kindle Location 302). While there are parts of Scripture that do this, I hope and pray we see it as more. Scripture is more than pithy statements or ethical edicts, it is a story, THE story of redemption and God connecting with man when man couldn’t connect with God on his/her own. This second understanding seems to give MUCH more weight and a better metaphor, for why we should use social media. Her treatment of John 1, was also frustrating, While word is a popular translation for logos, there is always the understanding that this is not the “words” we are talking (or typing) about here. These slight issues aside, this is an excellent book, especially for pastors or churches who are resisting or avoiding social media. A church without social media today, is like one in the 70’s without a flannel graph. I think Gould would agree that we must use whatever means are at our disposal to continue to advance the kingdom.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Gould is the modern day Joshua for the Digital Era! By Jonathan Esau Gould strategically tackles the topic of social media for the modern church. She is the new Joshua for the church, strategically entering a new land for the church to enter and use for the glory of God. "Today's mission field is online, so thinking theologically helps us use online digital technology to reach out while staying in alignment with the faith we profess" (Gould, Kindle Loc. 352). Social media is an intimidating concept for many within the church, but Gould simplifies the sheer mass of content into short, practical chapters that lay a foundation for why, what and how.Gould walks through the beginning of the book helping the reader understand social media and why the church should be embracing and utilizing it. She then moves on to help the reader strategically pick an applicable social media platform that will be beneficial to your specific ministry while teaching how to use it. Lastly she helps the reader be a practitioner, giving warnings and tips of the common pitfalls in social media and how to manage them. If you want to enter into social media just to follow the trend, just do it; but if you want to engage with social media to develop your ministry's presence in your community while growing it's effectiveness for God's Kingdom, then this book is a must read. It has many "insider" tips of how to use social media to not just get the initial draw to your ministry, but to keep people engaged and coming back, no matter what platform you choose. Each chapter ends with relevant questions to wrestle with on the specific journey each reader is on. These questions helped me set realistic, practical goals, helped me understand my context and discern what it the best fit for my ministry, and challenged me to think differently of my purpose and intentions. If a leadership group within a church were to read through this book together, it would generate incredible discussion that would help the group discern the future direction that the church could go in, using social media. The strengths of this book is that the chapters are short, to the point and filled with practical content and good questions. She simply defines things in this new digital era for the average person to comprehend. And she presents digital platforms in an unbiased way that help the reader not just ignorantly choose to use every social media platform, but to choose the most effective one for your ministry, and then coaches you on how to use it well.Like the rapid paced development of the digital era, I worry that this book might have a limited shelf life, but it definitely is structured that Gould could easily add in chapters for new platforms. There wasn't anything that stuck out at all that I would disagree with. It is well worth the cost and read if you are wanting your ministry to fully embrace the new era that we are living in, and before it's too late!

• TRILOGY - Three of American author Jack London’s bestselling Gold Rush books are bound together in this Kindle edition: Burning Daylight, The Call of the Wild, White Fang Burning Daylight It is 1893 in the Yukon Territory and the hero (nicknamed "Burning Daylight") is a high-flying entrepreneur Alaskan Gold Rush. The Call of the Wild (1903) Another Gold Rush tale set in the Yukon. Buck, a domesticated dog, has been kidnapped from his California ranch and sold into service as a sled dog in Alaska. He must fight for his survival and eventually succumbs to his wilder instincts to emerge as a leader. (Cover Photo Courtesy: Louise Nelson, London, England) White Fang (1906) White Fang is often read in conjunction with The Call of the Wild as it is also set during the Klondike Gold Rush in the Yukon. The plot is reversed, however, when a wild dog known as White Fang becomes domesticated. The story is told through the eyes of White Fang and involves his understanding of the human race. White Fang has been adapted into a Hollywood film many times. About The Author American writer John Griffith London (1876–1916) was a bestselling author and one of the few celebrity writers to make a large amount from popular novels including “The Call of the Wild” and short stories “To Build a Fire". He also wrote about the San Francisco Bay area in The Sea Wolf, another best-seller. London advocated socialism and wrote several books involving unionization and socialism including his dystopian novel The Iron Heel, his non-fiction exposé The People of the Abyss, and The War of the Classes. To prepare for his novel Call of the Wild, London spent almost year in the Yukon. It was, arguably, his greatest success.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fast-paced and powerful action, with a dash of humour By Per Arne Gods and divine favors are real. That's the premise for Zuidema's "The Dread Acolyte". It's a fast-paced story set in a dark fantasy world, where the mercenary warrior Torhagon, one of the goddess Isatara's chosen ones, is recruited for a mission that will change him forever. The book heads straight into the action, with a party of adventurers journeying across the lands, investigating a mysterious disappearance. The world of Exia contains some recognizable fantasy tropes, but Zuidema has enough original twists, characters and scenes up his sleeve to make this story engaging. The theme of new gods at war with the old gods, and the possibility of humans ascending to become more powerful beings in the service of the gods, is something that sets this novella apart. I also liked the sprinklings of humour -- descriptions of Torhagon's various irritations and observations about his party members made me chuckle out loud. However, I would like to know even more about Torhagon and the world he inhabits - but as this is a novella, not a full novel, I guess I'll have to wait it out.The main part of the book is powerful fantasy action -- if you like video games, the fights will seem like something from a (good) game. The last chapters have a more relaxed pacing and we get more into the heads of the characters, and a glimpse of the greater world and cultures within it.If you're looking for a short, entertaining read, The Dread Acolyte sure fits the bill. I'm looking forward to the next installment in the series!

Secession is a fast-paced adventure novel set against the current-day backdrop of a politically divided United States.

Zachariah Bass is a young Texas Ranger, struggling to define his role in serving the people of the state's remote western territories.

Working a series of heinous crimes, Zach uncovers a dark, treacherous secret - a conspiracy that could alter America's future and result in the secession of Texas.

Co-authored by P.A. Troit and best-selling writer Joe Nobody, Secession explores a world where a hopelessly gridlocked government fuels an ever-deepening divide between right and left. The public's frustration with the country's direction forces desperate leaders on both sides of the political spectrum to consider splitting the union.

Based on actual historic events, current economic realities, and a growing global trend, Secession immerses the listener in a lifelike scenario that could be America's future.

Slow start is foundation for AMAZING novel By JMDinGa Having read a large number of SHTF novels, and all of Joe Nobody's "Holding Their Own" series, I had high expectations for "Secession: The Storm". For the first half of "Storm" I was not very impressed, and felt that maybe the collaboration with Troit had negatively affected Joe's writing. Then the tide turned, and the second half was outstanding, especially the last third. In retrospect, the foundation for the crux of the story really did need to be set up slowly in the first half. All those seemingly disparate scenarios came together, intertwining into an amazing finish. So, Joe will remain near the top of my very short list of top SHTF/TEOTWAWKI authors. I can hardly wait for the sequel. Congrats to the author on another outstanding job!

13 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Another great piece of work associated with Joe Nobody By Tango Another great piece of work associated with Joe Nobody. P.A. Troit must be a secret government clone made from Joe's DNA. Most collaborations have distinct breaks in style and content. That isn't the case here, at least to my mind. These two work well and seamlessly together to create an amazing story full of engaging content and a story arc that keeps your mind trying to race ahead to the potential finish line. And Joe isn't kidding when he says the technology in the book is in use today. The rifle system mentioned is actually called Tracking Point(he changed the name but the .338LM mentioned goes for $27,500!!!) www.tracking-point.com if you're curious or just wealthy and bored. I compare P.A. to Joe not to highlight Joe's accomplishments but to acknowledge P.A.'s ability to stand shoulder to shoulder with him. Excellent work by both.In all, the plot devices for the secession of Texas are plausible and the seemingly distinct story arcs are brought back together toward the end for a satisfying conclusion. The aspect I appreciate most about the story is the authors addressing some of the nuts-and-bolts of a potential secession process. Many secessionist(I am one) get caught up in the "pie in the sky" ideology of Texas secession, without considering the thousands of issues that would have to wrestled to bed for secession to be viable and successful. Thankfully, Joe and P.A. did not drone on about the wishful thinking aspects; instead, they highlight a few of the political and functional aspects of the process. I respect that approach far more than the "screw it, we're out" mindset. I would like to see a second installment with Zach(Texas Ranger) taking center stage again, perhaps thwarting more conspiracy, subterfuge, and espionage. Of course, they would have to spice it up with a potential competition for Zach's attention between Cheyenne and a certain spindly legged Houston detective.Sorry for droning on but I didn't want to give too much away in my review, or dismiss what I liked about the book. In short, it's worth the purchase and doesn't disappoint with it's typical Joe-Nobody-caliber detail of action and suspense. I just wish I could more easily pinpoint P.A.'s direct contributions and give more credit where it is due; but, as I said, this is a very well written collaboration between two "knot-tight" authors. Great job, you two!

I haven't had the pleasure of reading Ms Troit's writings before but will in the future. In all a great start to what looks to be an exciting new direction from the perspective of a gradual downturn of society and not the "flip of the switch" as I usually read.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. another good read By Amazon Customer Another good read about the crew of the Endurance. Am looking forward to the next installment. Each of the books so far available seem to take on one crew member as the central character, so that you get a good feel for them and what makes them tick, while still keeping the rest of the crew interesting. I am thoroughly enjoying this series.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A light space adventure By Awesome Indies Reviews Amy Spahn has written a series of short novels about a bunch of misfit characters on a space ship called the Endurance. Each book focuses on a different character and this follows Viktor, the first mate, a large man with large guns who loves to read. He’s been called in to help solve a murder and his investigation leads him and Areva, another Endurance shipmate, to a space station in the outer solar system in search or the culprit where, after an exhilarating hover car chase, they discover the surprising truth. This is an entertaining read. It’s simple, lightweight and you can read it in a couple of hours, a good length when you don’t want to be tied up for days. This isn’t the kind of story you’d get overly excited about, partly because it is so short, but also because it’s very one dimensional. There are no deeper themes or issues explored. That’s not necessarily a negative; it’s just the kind of book it. You could read it instead of watching a movie. At 99c, it’s extremely good value.Plotwise, it’s interesting and well-constructed. The central character is endearing and well portrayed and the writing is clean and to the point. When I first read it, I found a few issues in the line editing, but after pointing them out to the author, she assures me that she has attended to these. With that considered I give this 4 stars.I received this book free of charge from the author in return for an honest review.

Another great story from Endurance By Reader at large This is the second book about the characters of the space ship Endurance and opens approximately a month after the end of the first book. Each of the books showcases a different crew member as the point of view character, and this time it’s the turn of First Officer Viktor Ivanokoff who was my favourite character from the first book.Viktor previously worked in the organised crime division, and when his ex-boss is murdered, Viktor is asked to help out with finding the killer. There was no love lost between Viktor and his ex-boss, who was one of the people responsible for Viktor serving on the Endurance, but as Viktor’s name is on a list of targets found on the dead man’s body, he has good reason for helping to find the killer. It will also stop him getting bored while Endurance is back on earth, and there is always the spur of beating his ex-colleagues to finding the murderer..In a delightful piece of unanticipated rivalry, Viktor and his Endurance colleagues work out what connects the people on the list before the Organised Crime group. Shortly afterwards there is an attempt to assassinate Viktor which tells them they’re on the right track. They discover a message sent to Saturn, and in an ironic turn of fate, Endurance is the only ship ready for the trip.Mightier than the Sword is a great mix of murder investigation and sci-fi. There are some good fight scenes and a hover car chase before Viktor discovers a secret that may have far reaching consequences and links back to elements in the first book. This is a good read, and while it is a stand-alone novel, it takes up the story from shortly after it ended in Episode 1 and is therefore better read in sequence. I like the episode length books and have already started reading episode 3.I received this book free from the author in return for an honest review.

Edwyn Byers is your typical prospectless 17-year-old. Several months out of Secondary School, he has no plans for his life. All he knows is that he doesn’t want those plans to involve students. Eventually, he decides to join the British Army. Why not? Good money, a sense of purpose, and maybe he could learn some of this ‘discipline’ that his parents and teachers are so fond of. After the minimum four years, he’ll either want to stay or have gained some inspiration for what to do with the rest of his life. After a meeting at the Recruitment Centre, however, everything changes. He’s invited to join a ‘special branch’ of the army after he answers certain questions in the right way. In this special branch, he’ll be learning to fight using more traditional weapons, but against a less-than-traditional enemy. He gathers his belongings and is thrust through an underground doorway into darkness and a thrilling world filled with magic, mystery, danger, and some fantastic new friends.

The Dragons of Lovana: The Secret Army (Volume 1), by Dave Snell

About the Author I'm Dave, never David. I'm a Customer Service Assistant at the Co-operative and was once in training to become an Estate Agent. We don't talk about that. I've been writing for most of my life, from blogs about my dog and my son, to long-winded Facebook statuses, to half-finished novels, but Dragons is truly my life's work, so it's fitting that it is the first one that I bring to publication. Nine years in the writing, I've lost it completely to a virus, rewritten it, lost it again to a cup of coffee spilled on a laptop, had it magically retrieved, decided that I hated it while editing, and rewritten it again from scratch. Don't worry, I've finally learned how to back it up, and Book Two should come along much sooner than nine years from now. In the future you can expect several more Dragons of Lovana novels from me, a number of other books in the Fantasy genre, and my name to appear as Editor on a few more. I've immersed myself in Fantasy, and I'm here to stay.

It starts of a tad rough "feeling", but soon the author hits his stride and the story takes off. When I reached the end, I wanted to shake the author until the next book was in my hand! (Or kindle app, actually...)

Everyone dreams of the cupboard opening to take them to a magical land, of Hagrid showing up to whisk them off to Hogwarts. In The Dragons of Lovana: The Secret Army, Dave (never David) Snell weaves a tale of the wistful daydream that certainly has me dreaming of the next installment!

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. A Good Start to a New Series! By Doug Glassford I just finished reading this space-cop-black ops opening story to what looks to be a thrilling series. I am sorry that one of the reviewers was so put-off by the short novella length of this book. And, for someone not happy with the retro styling of a story ending in a cliff-hanging scene I can see why he is angry.Folks, this is not a stand-alone book. It is part one of a series that is styled much like a television series from the 60's and 70's. The author is obviously a Star Trek fan, and if you've had the opportunity to enjoy his other works or seen his bio you would see that his working career has centered around being a cop. So, his work gravitates toward protagonists who are or were cops. Like most good authors, this author bleeds his lifeblood and passion onto each page. There is a chilling scene that sets the main protagonist, Captain Vic Cojo off on a vendetta, a mission off the books and one that could end his career as well as his life. It gripped me because of the similarity between it and the horrific assault on the Connecticut elementary school I am sure you've heard of named, Sandy Hook. It brought tears to my eyes... and, being a fan of this author for some time now, I know that kids and their well-being is as dear to him as his next breath. Reading this portion of the story was well worth the price of the book to me. Knowing that this inciting incident is what propelled this respected military Captain to break rank and go against a direct command risking treason to hunt down and 'exterminate the wretched vermin' that could perpetrate such a heinous act of heartless violence against the purity and innocence of children sets the theme for me for the balance of this series. So, I ask you to disregard the short and bitter snark of Mr. Paradis in regards to the actual content of this short introductory book and check it out for the good read that it is... let's face it, how can you be so upset for having spent only $0.99 for a book? As I said I can understand Mr. Paradis being upset if he purchased this book thinking it was a full stand-alone novel so I mean him no disrespect, but I am letting anyone reading this review know that this is a short introductory book for a new Sci-fi-Black Ops-Space Cowboy series that I plan on reading through its completion.I hope this review is of help to those reading it. If you are a fan of the Star Trek Universe, Firefly, and Action films and stories, this book and the balance of the series should appeal to you as it does me.

I am writing this review after having already read the first four books in this entertaining, continuing space opera. The members of Grendel Unit consist of an elite 'Black Ops' team with individualized talents, skills, and baggage. The characters are memorable and relatable. The dialogue between the characters is clever and at times, humorous. The plot moves along at a good pace. I found it an entertaining read.

Major cliff hanger enough said By Joseph Schade I liked this short story but not as much as some of the other Grendel Unit stories out there. don't get me wrong it's a good story just not as good as others. I read them as I found them so they were way out of order but then most can be read as a stand alone story except this one, It's got a great cliff hanger at the end. So I would still recommend it to any Grendel fans.
