3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Great Clean Read By Matina's Bookcase I was very excited to be able to read a Tale of Light and Shadow. After reading it’s short prequel, The Fool and the Dragonox (previously reviewed on Amazon found here) I was very interested in reading more from Jacob Gowans, all that to say, I really enjoyed reading this book.A Tale of Light and Shadow is a light fantasy adventure set in a world of magic and adventure. All Henry wants to do is marry his childhood sweetheart, Isabell and live a normal life. His plans however are interrupted not only by a scheming father, but by an emperor and a prophecy that if allowed to be fulfilled will have dire consequences for the entire land. Through the book Henry’s bravery and leadership are tested while his friendships are pushed to the limit. But overall there is still hope.Jacob Gowans writing is excellent easily pulling readers into his world and is never jarring or sloppy. His descriptions are wonderful always painting a clear picture in my mind of what’s going on. A Tale of Light and Shadow is engaging tying together elements of adventure and fantasy. I found myself on the edge of my seat at times eager to see what happened next and how the characters would get out of whatever situation they’d landed in. I often laughed at Maggie and Ruther’s banters and I was pleasantly surprised to meet James.The characters in this book are very well written, each one shining with their own unique personalities. I found myself drawn to each of them in different ways, which is odd for me. I tend to really like one or two characters in a book but Jacob Gowans has managed to make each of his characters shine in a way that was delightfully unexpected. The more minor characters all also had charm to them as well, as soon as I met the King I liked him. The Emperor really stood out as a villain as well.A few characters did stand out a little more to me however, those being James and Ruther. I found myself wondering about both of them through the book and I was always eager to see another glimpse of their past or personalities.There were a few things that I really enjoyed about this book. The first is a small thing, but I was delighted when I realized that Atolos was an acronym for the books title, A Tale of Light and Shadow. I thought it was very witty and I can’t help but smile every time I see either the title or the name Atolos. I love it when author’s do things that that, because it just adds to the book. Speaking of the book, the ending blew me away and has left me desperately wanting to read the next book this this series.My biggest problem with this book was the pacing in the beginning. It wasn't until almost halfway through the book that I really felt the story start to really move. I kept waiting for something to happen as Henry and Isabella continually put off leaving town. It was suspenseful in the beginning, and there were quite a few times where I thought, "Things are finally going to start happening!" but after a while their stagnation in town just got old.Overall I loved A Tale of Light and Shadow. I am still eager to see more from Jacob Gowans and I cannot wait until the next book in this series comes out. I’d recommend this book for anyone interested in fantasy or adventure. The magic element is light and so it will still appeal to fans who aren’t experienced with fantasy.Note: I received an advanced readers edition of this book from the publisher for my fair and honest opinion which I have stated above.

Stokes While Scott and I were at Comic Con last April (technically FanX, but only real geeks care details like that...) I was waiting in line for Brandon Mull to sign my copy of Beyonders and I passed another table where author Jacob Gowans was signing and handing out FREE copies of his new book, A Tale of Shadow and Light. They were advanced reader copies, and the book is actually not scheduled to be released until the middle of September. It took me a little while to find time to read this because I have so many other books I want to read too, but I finally found the time.I was pretty pleased with the feel of this book; how the plot moved along and how the words flowed on the page. There were only a handful of times where the writing style tripped me up enough that I was pulled out of the story and had to stop and remind myself, "Oh yes, this is an advanced reader copy. There are going to be a few bumps along the way." But, the amount of those moments were few and far between.How to describe this book... I told Scott that it was similar to Wheel of Time (WoT) in the feel of the universe, only with less magic. There are some small hints towards supernatural forces, but it is all very minimal, with even some of the characters disbelieving that magic exists. There also appears to be only evil humans running around causing most of the problems instead of evil creatures like orcs (Lord of the Rings) or trollocs (WoT).The story is much lighter and less detailed than Robert Jordan's novels (WoT). I told Scott that it is kind of like "Wheel of Time Lite." At 400 pages, it is half the length and you don't have to invest so much time and energy figuring out the rules of the universe, which will make it more appealing to many readers. The universe of A Tale of Light and Shadow is pretty typical of most fantasy worlds and is very easy for the non-fantasy fan and fantasy fan alike to slip in to.I occasionally did find some of the interactions between the characters to be either unbelievable (too over the top, or too underwhelming), or their reactions to be poorly described (I seem to remember at least once where there was some unspoken communication between two characters that really would have benefited from simply having some dialogue instead), but that happened so little that it was hardly a problem. I really enjoyed the way the novel ended, and I have hope that this author's writing style will continue to improve with each story he completes, so I would interested in picking up the next novel in the series to see how the story continues.
2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Loved this novel - well written and full of adventure! By S. Burt I am a convert to "Fantasy" - or I like to tell myself that. I am one of those reluctant geeks that loves fantasy but I don't consider things fantasy. It's fiction. :) I didn't play D&D (although one of my boyfriends did), I have not read The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings or All of C.S. Lewis' books. I do love Princess Bride, Harry Potter, and anything with Vampires (started with Anne Rice...)With that said, I loved this book. I purchased it by chance. I love reading new authors and Jacob Gowans was signing copies so I decided to take a chance.What I loved about A Tale of Light and Shadow: The characters. The conflict. The suspense. And of course, the twists. While there could have been MORE character development, this novel included sufficient background knowledge of each character. The catch - there is more to learn about each character still! And I love that. I loved that the characters don't fit a perfect mold of "fantasy" heroes, heroines, damsels in distress, villains, or strong silent types. These characters possessed qualities that I see in people around me, in my family. And because of this, I was able to connect to the characters more than I anticipated.The conflict was better than I anticipated as well. I don't want to offer spoilers, but while I expected something sort of like what happened, I was truly caught off guard when I read what what happening. I love it when books do that!I expected a formula fantasy novel and I got nothing like that. There was suspense and guessing. I wondered who was supportive and who was conniving. This led to the twists. Again, I expected something different and was more than pleasantly surprised.I also loved the storytelling aspect. Reminded me of Rime of the Ancient Mariner... One of my favorite poems.I would recommend this novel to people who enjoy mystery and fantasy. No younger than 10 because of some battle scenes. Gowans does well to allude to violence or improprieties but doesn't go into gory detail. That was also appreciated.I am eager for the next book in this series and thrilled at my chance purchase.
