Review Dale T. Phillips' "A Shadow on the Wall" is a unique action story that is part of the Zack Taylor Series. Zack is trying to put down roots and build himself a life after he had found out who killed his friend. However, the killer has been released and Zack finds himself in another dangerous situation where he doesn't know if it is part of his past or some new trouble that he has stumbled into. From the Author A Shadow on the Wall is the third in the series about Zack Taylor, a man with many problems. He struggles to do better, but the shadows of his past weigh him down. When he tries to help others, he finds that doing good is a complicated matter, and unintended consequences force life-changing alterations. The shadows haunting this book are many, and those familiar with the work of Carl Jung will see how deep they go. Additionally, the theme draws on the idea of Plato's cave, with the concept of people seeing only a distorted reflection of reality. There is much to think about for those who wish to peel back the layers. If not, just enjoy a cracking action yarn.Should you notice a lack of cell phones and certain modern items, it's because this book is set in the 1990's. There was indeed a booming business in sea urchins off the coast of Maine for a short time, so certain ideas have a basis in reality. But this a work of fiction, and any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental.
From the Back Cover A longtime follower of mystery fiction, the author has crafted a hero in the mold of Travis McGee, Doc Ford, and John Cain, a moral man at heart who finds himself faced with difficult choices in a dangerous world, and one at odds with himself and his new environment. Maine is very different from the mean, big-city streets of New York, Boston, or L.A., and Zack Taylor must learn quickly if he is to survive.

I’m always curious to see if coming to a series or reading a sequel without reading the prior works is a problem for understanding or getting enjoyment out of the book in hand. I give credit to Mr. Phillips for creating an enjoyable read that does not get bogged down in back story or is so “insiderish” that a new reader is left in the dark and wondering what all the fuss is about. This book is an expertly crafted mystery that keeps reader enjoyment front and center.Zack Taylor is an ex-con who is trying to get his life in order. He has certain – ahem – skills that can’t help but draw trouble to his feet. Tripping up is inevitable. Wrapped around this character is a setting in Portland, Maine, that includes a Japanese gang, a Hollywood movie, and diehard New England fishermen and grizzled police not sure if Zack is friend or foe. I can see why Zack Taylor fans begged to have another installment written in the series.Mr. Phillips writes in spare, no nonsense prose that evokes the best of hardboiled crime stories like Lawrence Block’s “When the Ginmill Closes.” The plot is well-paced in quick, easily digestible chapters. I found it the perfect book to keep with me and read whenever I had a spare moment or two.

Zack is trying to put down roots and build himself a life after he had found out who killed his friend. However, the killer has been released and Zack finds himself in another dangerous situation where he doesn't know if it is part of his past or some new trouble that he has stumbled into. It took me until roughly the middle and towards the ending of the story to start to figure out the plot twist making this a great cliffhanger. For those that love cliffhangers this action packed story is right up your alley. The only thing that I would have loved to have seen in "A Shadow on the Wall" was a little more background on the other stories so that you didn't feel left out when Zack's past was mentioned. As part of the series it didn't have enough background about Zack's past to be a stand alone novel but with a little more information this story could have actually been read as a stand alone novel within the series. You won't have to read 5 chapters to get into the action unlike other series I have read. Men will love "A Shadow on the Wall" because it is a true action novel with very little romance. All in all this is an action packed part of the Zack Taylor series by Dale T. Phillips and it will intrigue you into reading the entire series.4 BookmarksCarol Langstroth, Mangager/ ReviewerMind Fog Reviews

Zack has his own sense of right and wrong but you'll find yourself routing for him, even when you disagree with his methods. Short chapters allow for stopping points but you probably won't stop very often. If you haven't read the previous two books in the Zack Taylor series ("A Memory of Grief" and "A Fall From Grace"), you'll be looking them up.
