In the lobby of a prestigious Wall Street investment firm, one man is dead and another seriously injured. The man accused of the crime now a fugitive. When the Director of the FBI personally orders Special Agent Sean Kruger to New York City to find the fugitive, Kruger questions the reason. Told to shut up and do his job, he starts looking into the case. What he finds is troubling. Eye-witness accounts seem contrived with little variance between individual testimonies. The more he hears, the more he feels someone is manipulating the story. As the investigation unfolds, he discovers the only information known about the fugitive is a HR file from a former employer. Public records of the man do not exist. The fugitive is a ghost. A ghost who has disappeared. When Kruger unearths information the investment firm lied about the incident in the lobby, he learns there is a possibility the fugitive was defending himself. He also discovers another individual is searching for the fugitive. An individual who has no interest in allowing the truth to be discovered. When the cat and mouse game turns lethal, Kruger must use all of his skills and experience to find the truth, protect the fugitive, and ultimately stay alive.

One of the Top in Its Genre By Kieran Hair “The Fugitive’s Trail” is our introduction to FBI Special Agent Sean Kruger, a character the author appears to have some intent of revisiting. Kruger has been tasked with finding a fugitive, armed with little knowledge other than a highly dubious story regarding the man’s crimes. Kruger learns early on that his suspicions regarding this story are likely true, and that the people looking for the fugitive seem to be hiding some secrets of their own. He must unravel the story while searching for the fugitive, all the while racing against Adam Weber, a man hired to kill the very same fugitive for whom Kruger is searching. That may sound like a lot of story to follow, but it unfolds on the pages rather well. The story is told with an utmost level of clarity, and even the fugitive’s name changes do not complicate the tale to the point that most readers should not be able to follow it with relative ease. The story is not only told with clarity, but with an excellent level of detail. Everything from the settings to the snippets of action here and there are told with crisp imagery that makes the book’s proceedings easy to picture in the mind’s eye.It is very refreshing to read a book that manages to deliver a fairly complex plot while still engaging the reader and making the story easy to understand. This is one of the better books of the genre, and author J.C. Fields certainly deserves some recognition for his work. It can be hard for many writers, even those of immense talent, to make a name for themselves in such a saturated industry. But if Fields makes enough to market the masterpiece he has written here, then he should have no problem doing quite well for himself. Looking forward to more Sean Kruger books in the future.

Fields earned a degree in Psychology and. After college he joined a large computer corporation and has utilized skills learned there to introduce computer usage to numerous companies. This mastery of the computer technology made Fields’ movement into the Blog system of sharing his writing skills with a broad audience a natural transition so that now he can devote his time to his passion for writing, creating short stories and novels in the mystery/thriller and science fiction arenas in the printed form also. He is currently the Treasurer for the Springfield Writers' Guild, a chapter of the Missouri Writer's Guild. THE FUGITIVE’S TRAIL is his publishing debutWhat we are fortunate to read is the first installment in what appears to be a series named after the lead character of these novels- Sean Kruger. Fields writes as though he were preparing a screenplay, so assiduous is his setting the atmosphere of the scenes of his novel. The first chapter is a fully realized crime, adroitly scribed, and this skill follows the writing through the book. The plot can be summarized as follows: How do you find a ghost? That’s what FBI Agent Sean Kruger must do. He is dispatched to New York City to find a fugitive who is accused of killing one man and wounding another in the lobby of a high profile investment firm. Once there, Kruger learns the only information known about the man is his name. Everything else has been erased from the system. Once Kruger digs deeper into the case, he discovers wealthy and powerful men working behind the scenes. These men are determined to keep the truth about the incident and the fugitive from being revealed. In the ensuing search for the suspect, Kruger is pitted against a ruthless foe who is determined to find the fugitive first. When the cat and mouse game turns lethal, Kruger must use all of his skills and experience to save the fugitive, the truth, and even himself.’Sean Kruger immediately steps off the page as a memorable character along the lines of Jack Ryan of Tom Clancy’s indelible creation. It will be interesting to follow the episodes that follow in this series to see if Fields can maintain the high standard he has set for himself – and for Sean Kruger. Bet he does! The Hunter and the Hunted By Marta Cheng The Fugitive’s Trail is an entertaining thriller reminiscent, in some respects, of the movie The Fugitive starring Harrison Ford as the doctor on the run after being wrongfully convicted in the murder of his wife. On his heels was a team of U.S. marshals led by Sam Girard, played by Tommy Lee Jones. In the movie, the characters played by Ford and Jones were constantly in a battle of wits, much like a cat and mouse. In the book, Sean Kruger, a special agent with the FBI is called in to lead an investigation into an alleged break-in/altercation at a Wall Street firm which has left one security detail dead and the other likely crippled for life. The CEO’s story as to the events that went down – as well as everyone else’s account in the firm – is too contrived and Sean’s gut is telling him there’s more to what happened than meets the eye. To make matters worse, the mystery man responsible for the carnage appears to be a ghost. Ghost or not, Sean’s been tasked with finding him and what follows is a proverbial game of cat and mouse, the hunter and the hunted. Each uses their brains and wits to stay one step ahead of the other. Fields’ protagonist, Sean Kruger, has a doctorate in psychology and is used to reading people but his adversary certainly gives him a run for his money. Well written, with plenty of tense moments, some great action and a few unexpected twists along the way, The Fugitive’s Trail makes for a great read. Highly recommended!
