Lefcourte A little corny but a great read for Dog Lovers. The sequel is "Michael, Brother of Jerry". If you like London's tales, especially his dog stories or South Seas stories you'll like this. If you've owned an Irish Terrier you'll know how accurate London is, he definitely had owned one and, from the preface, one very similar to Jerry.Jerry is born on a plantation in the Solomon Islands, accompanies a White Trader and lives among the natives. The book is filled with South Sea Islands lore of the turn of the century before last. Right up there with Conrad and Stevenson for lovers of that millieu.
4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. jerry of the islands By Dale Smith Jerry of the Islands is a good book, which I thoroughly enjoyed. However, it is not for everyone. If you can get past the archaic, and sometimes objectionable use of the language. You will like this book.In the author's defense, this story was written in 1914, and the terms used at that time were considered to be more acceptable.I like this book because I used to own an Irish Terrier, and I considered the dog to be the most splendid animal in all the world. This book brought back memories of the types of things that my dog would, and would not do. So if you have a fondness for dogs, especially Irish Terriers. You will enjoy this book.

Jerry is a rough haired Irish Terrier that has ALL the terrier traits in his DNA. Rough, tough, sometimes scoundrel and sometimes clown sometimes protector and sometimes attacker. Jack London has been one of my favorite authors for almost fifty years since I read my first London book "Call of the Wild" when I was about twelve years old. Needles to say I am a dog lover and in that book Buck was to me the king of dogs and the book itself the king of dog tales. Since I have now read "Jerry of the Islands" I may have to retract that statement as Jerry had my undivided attention throughout the story. Like Buck, Jerry shares his adventures with a wide range of characters some good some terribly bad. You think you know where the story is heading then it takes a turn and heads off in a direction quite different but exciting. After "Jerry of the Islands" I just had to read "Michael, Brother of Jerry". Racially sensitive individuals won't appreciate the language in the book but keep in mind this book was written at the turn of the 20th century and it obviously how people spoke back then. At least people in the South Seas anyway. I highly recommend this book if you like dogs, the South Sea Islands, sailing, and adventure. It's a story every bit an equal to "Call of the Wild".
