The German in the German Uniform, by Karolin Ross

About the Author Born in the era of the Cold War and having firsthand experience of the pros and cons of both sides of the war, the author has learned to manage survival tactics from her early childhood. Nothing prepared her better than to live it day by day and having to face the consequences of what a particular regime categorized her to be, only because she was born on the wrong side or because her parents came from the other side. Even though the Cold War has not existed for some time now, the mentality of her generation is still the same. The author strives to show that she doesn’t belong to a certain category just because she was put there, and she uses her talent as a storyteller to do so.

Several times I had to suspend belief, overlook modern vernacular, and wonder if the book had an editor, given two humorous homophonic errors. I gave grace because I assumed English wasn't the author's native language, though I haven't confirmed that. I downloaded the book for free. Because it isn't believable as written, I'd be hard pressed to actually purchase the book. Should book two be a free download, I would read it.

Despite this disclaimer, Agent Brooks: The Making of a Superhero is—in my opinion—loosely based on the author’s life. I should know. I grew up with him!The story begins with agent Ted Brooks on a mission in Afghanistan, but quickly flashes back to Ted’s formative years. Ted is a shy child, the results of older, over-protective parents. Fortunately, he grows-up in a neighborhood filled with many colorful personalities and opportunities for adventure and mischief, which help him to overcome some of his social anxieties. Ted is a relatively bright student and pursues advance degrees in the life sciences and attains a PhD in biochemistry. During his dissertation research he invents a novel mind- and body-enhancing drug and contrary to ethical principles, begins taking this experimental drug. The drug not only enhances his cognitive abilities, but also his physical attributes including strength, endurance, and agility. Ted is truly transformed. How does Ted use his newfound attributes? What happens to Ted at the furtive Bionics? What is he doing in Afghanistan? You will need to read the book to find out.The author presents a quick-paced and entertaining narrative, based equally on fact—the author worked in the pharmaceutical industry—and fiction. As one of the author’s childhood friends (Jim in the book?), I look forward to reading the next installment of agent Brooks, superhero.

By Dogmother Agent Brooks was an exciting thriller with a lot of action, character development, knowledge of the sciences, enough sex to keep your imagination going and a great hero (who is more human than Superman), but definitely becomes the one to save the day. I call it a thriller, because even before its midpoint I was so intrigued, it was difficult to put the book down, wanting to find out where our hero was going to wind up! For one who generally chooses non-fiction books, it was an easy and fun read. Except for the title, I had no idea how Agent Brooks would evolve and how it would end, until the end. Thanks RJ.

Good fun and a great resource for parents and teachers By DL Berg As a mother, The Princess of the Palace makes me regret that my own children are just a bit too old for those much-loved nightly story times. We would have thoroughly enjoyed reading this tale together. More than that, it would have been an invaluable tool for helping my daughter find her own way through the trappings of our culture with courage, perseverance, and faith. And it would have opened rich discussions with my son about god-honoring ways to respond to and interact with the women in his own life. As a pastor's wife, I foresee endless applications for this story and study guide in one-on-one mentoring, group studies, VBS, and more.

By bonita beaston "Princess of the Palace", is a gently written fable showing the beauty and importance of developing a positive inner faith. The story itself is fun to read and the lessons drawn from the story demonstrate to young minds the importance of patience and love. Combined with the beautiful graphics throughout the book, Princess is an excellent choice for parents wanting to start young children on the right path in life.

By Melissa McClendon The Princess of the Palace is beautifully written. I enjoyed how book one and two of The Kingdom Chronicles ties together. In today's culture it is difficult to find well written books on moral character which makes Princesses of the Palace a rare read. I would highly recommend this book.Jadyn - age 12

298 of 306 people found the following review helpful. A Reasonable Review from a College Student By Gunslinger Before I purchase any product, especially online, I obsess over reviews and blog entries and any other information I can find on it. I must have read a hundred different pieces on this Bible before buying it. I was so disappointed with many of Amazon's Bible reviews because many of the comments are from overzealous supporters (or opponents) to a certain translation. Here's the short list of things to have in mind before buying (or not buying) this Bible....1) It's sweet. It looks exactly like a large square-ish moleskine journal (which, by the way, are also sweet). It also seems to share the moleskine's durability, but only time will tell.2) It does have small type (7.5). It is not, by any means, too small...provided you are in the market for a compact or thin-line type Bible. You won't want to get this if you are farsighted.3) There is plenty of margin space and the lines ARE close together...but they consist of tiny light dots so it won't be a problem to use 2 lines for larger writing. The paper is thinner than moleskine, but if it bleeds...go spend 4 dollars on a better pen.4) The ESV is a great translation. It is only very slightly less literal than the NASB but flows better, and is therefor excellent for both devotional reading and study.5) It's the inspired inerrant word of God.

128 of 128 people found the following review helpful. Charming. By Just A Mom I'm struck by the sweet, old-fashioned look of this Bible. Like a classic book, the cover is cloth-covered board. It's smaller than a "regular" Bible (see pictures- I added a quarter for perspective). The smaller size keeps the weight down, but look at the pictures to be certain the print is not too small for your comfort.Inside:This is not a study Bible. There's a few introductory pages at the front of the book. The back of the book includes an explanation of salvation, a short synopsis of every book of the Bible, and a one year reading plan. This Bible (as the title suggests) is designed for journaling. Each page features two columns of scripture accompanied by a column for writing (or art). The lines are faint... I had to get pretty close to try to capture them with the camera. They are small, narrow lines. I appreciate the faintness of the lines for the pages where I want to add artwork instead of just notes. The pages are still traditional-Bible-thin. I wouldn't paint without some kind of gesso (my opinion, your mileage may vary). You'll still need to consider carefully the mediums (pens, highlighters, etc.) you use if you don't want it to go through to the other page.I appreciate the cardboard slipcover. I feel like it would keep my journaling Bible safe in a tote bag if I wanted to be outside or on the road with it.Overall, it's simply charming. I feel inspired to start reading right away.

138 of 143 people found the following review helpful. If you're expecting a "Moleskine Bible" you'll probably love it. By Michael Noes In reading through the poor reviews that this Bible is getting, I'm convinced that the people who wrote them didn't know what they were getting when they ordered it. This is a unique Bible. The reason I'm rating it a 4 instead of a 5 is that I understand it's not for everybody.I'm 23, and I own all sorts of Bibles and Bible versions. I've been waiting for a Bible I could really feel is my own, something that wouldn't feel out of place if I throw it in my backpack, but still has something to it that would make me want to use it.Basically, this Bible is an attempt to merge the Bible and a moleskine notebook, right down to the shrink wrapped packaging and paper insert, cream colored pages and the elastic strap. I'm a moleskine notebook user, and I love the things. If you do too, chances are you won't dislike this Bible. If you don't know what moleskines are or aren't a fan, this Bible might not appeal to you. I'm sure this is the reason for a lot of the dissatisfaction that people have. This bible devotes a lot of real estate to the journaling area; if you aren't planning on writing a lot in it, don't get this bible. The text is very small (though not super-tiny like those pocket bibles). But that was something I was expecting, and I don't mind. If the text were any bigger, this bible would be thicker and heavier than I'd like. It's easily thrown in a backpack (securely with that oh-so-handy elastic strap) and it's not a burden to use or to carry around. The pages are slightly thicker and more porous than your traditional bible pages. I don't mind this at all- it's easier to write in the nearly two-inch margins (I use a mechanical pencil), and it probably makes the whole thing a bit less dense and lighter. So I must confess, I'm in love with this bible. I can understand people's gripes about the text size and the size of the lines in the margins, but really, I don't mind either of these things, because I would rather that the overall product be smaller. You can get a lot of writing done in those nice big margins if you write small. I see no problems with the binding. If you're looking for a standard, run-of-the-mill, regularly proportioned Bible, then this would be a bit of a shock if you ordered it and didn't expect the things that make it different. Take a look at the shape of it, and check out the pictures available online that show the pages. Personally I think this Bible has a lot of character, I love how simple it is, and I've been waiting for a journaling bible like it for some time now.

A malicious alien race as old as the universe itself has invaded Earth. Standing between them and the annihilation of the human race: an aging sheriff, the hippie who stole his daughter, a prissy bureaucrat, and a booze-addled reporter.

We could be in trouble.

When the residents of Bald Eagle, Colorado, begin to act strangely, Sheriff Bert Grayson suspects hippie guru Derek Brolin is to blame. But Brolin has a very different story to tell - one about a mysterious silver object that changed the members of his new commune in terrifying ways.

Bert is skeptical, not least because Brolin has been conducting a secret affair with Bert's daughter. But as Bald Eagle's residents begin to disappear, the lawman must accept what Brolin has tried to tell him: His sleepy town has become Ground Zero for an extra-terrestrial invasion.

Bert rounds up a ragtag band of deputies to try to repel the creatures, but he is about to discover the alien invaders are not the most imminent threat to his beloved town.

A compulsively listenable tale that peers into humanity's darkest recesses, Invasion at Bald Eagle recalls the golden age of horror fiction.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Welcome to the show By TW Brown, Author, Editor, and Reviewer I was fortunate to be introduced to Kris Ashton via the short story. I am equally pleased that his talent extends to the full length novel.I received an ARC of this title and took far too long to dive in. Once I did, it was quickly apparent that the story-telling ability does not get diluted with a larger offering. This is a pulpy tale that has enough going on to keep you turning the pages well into the night once you get started. This is a good old-fashioned science fiction story that has a few twists and turns to keep you interested all the way to the end. I found a few Indie editing errors, but overall there was little to detract from the experience of a very good book. See for yourself.

Pope Francis has taken the world by storm, captivating Catholics, Protestants, and non-Christians alike. Sneaking out of the Vatican at night, washing the feet of inmates, and taking selfies with young fans is certainly unlike any religious leader we’ve seen in a while, and some of the religious establishment is uneasy about it. The revitalization Francis is bringing to the Catholic Church is not without precedent, however. Jesus had a similar effect in his day, drawing crowds with his humility, kindness, and wisdom―even as he drew the disapproval of established religious leaders. The things that have brought Francis such media attention are the same things that made Jesus so peculiar and attractive in his day.

Thoughtful examination of Jesus’ example and legacy, as well as an honest look at the similarities and differences between Catholic and Protestant faith, invites reflection on the heart of Christianity and how we relate to our fellow Christians. Readers will discover the power of heartfelt joy, radical love, and passion for justice to shake people out of religious complacency and into dynamic, contagious faith. Jesus, Pope Francis, and a Protestant Walk into a Bar looks at what is universal among Christians, what is unique to Catholics and Protestants, and how all Christians can practice understanding and cooperation across differences. Perfect for individual or group use, discussion questions are also included to encourage further thought and conversation.

Jesus, Pope Francis, and a Protestant Walk into a Bar: Lessons for the Christian Church, by Paul Rock, Bill Tammeus

Review

"This book rejoices both my heart and my mind. . . Here are respected, mainline Protestant clergy speaking with grace and respect and, in places, near-affection for the work and ministry and public stances of a Pope. Here is a line of thought and prayer-filled commentary that, if embraced, can only lead all of us to a new and holier way of being the people of God together in tomorrow’s world."― Phyllis Tickle, author of The Great Emergence

"Pope Francis is our facilitator for this intriguing invitation into Protestant-Catholic dialogue, with his presence, teachings, and lifestyle used to illustrate the gospel that Protestants too affirm – transcending our mutual ecclesiastical and doctrinal disagreements and wounds. I strongly recommend this book with its accompanying suggestions and questions for use by both Protestant and Catholic groups in exploring a deeper understanding of their own faith and that of each other." ―Fr. W. Paul Jones, Trappist monk and resident director of the Hermitage Spiritual Retreat Center in Pittsburg, MO

"The simple and inclusive acts of Pope Francis are better responses to Jesus’ central question, ‘Do you love me?’ than exclusive ecclesiastical practices and guilt-based teachings. This book offers Roman Catholic and Protestant Christians a fresh start in their broken relationships and helps to sweep away exclusive practices and hurtful attitudes while cherishing differences, to love more universally and more intensely."― The Rev. Dr. Vern Barnet, founder of the Greater Kansas City Interfaith Council

MCPHAIL Growing up in a farm/factory small town in Illinois, the divide between Protestant and Catholic was severe and sometimes harsh. Marriage between the two faiths was difficult if not scandalous, the public and Catholic schools had no contact with each other, unity was not a word one ever used. The attitude was one of "blissful" and "we are superior" ignorance. Our eyes are being opened and attitudes changed because of many factors, including publication of thoughttul books of clarityand hope such as this. Pope Francis is certainly a catalyst, a holy presence reminding us of the radical message of Jesus.Such prophets, comforters, avatars exist in all faiths with their message that we are spiritual not material, that we are indeedOne and this is the basis of service to one another. I so appreciated the powerful scripture selections which begin each chapter of this book, from Micah to Galatians. Also, the suggested reading list is excellent. As we reach out to one another either in community, or individually, the questions for discussion will seem helpful, almosteasy. The feelings and answers may not be so easy nor filled with unity and love. This is exactly how old wounds andperceptions will be healed and, sadly, must happen before true Re-Unity and Love can occur. My thanks for Dr. Paul Rock and Bill Tammeus for a wonderful book. I hope there will be sequels: Pope Francis giving his place inthese conversations to a Rabbi, an Emir, a Swami. Let us open our minds and hearts to all. May I say it will be an spiritualand practical adventure and a genuine revelation!

Presbyterian love for the new pope By Paul Mastin ``Pope Francis has broken new ground, as the first pope from the Southern Hemisphere, but has also brought a new feeling of openness, inclusiveness, and relatebility to the papacy. He has found admirers and popularity within the Roman Catholic Church as well as among secular and Protestant groups. Count Paul Rock, pastor of Kansas City, Missouri's Second Presbyterian Church, among Pope Francis's fans.In his new book Jesus, Pope Francis, and a Protestant Walk into a Bar: Lessons for the Christian Church, which springs from a sermon series Rock and two of his fellow pastors preached at Second Presbyterian, Rock sings the praises of Francis. I'm not sure Rock has a negative word for the new pope. . . . The heart of Rock's message is Christian unity, and Francis has certainly reached out to many groups as well. However, Francis gives no indication that he is ready to acknowledge that Protestant churches are part of the The Church.I find it interesting that so many Protestants and unbelievers have embraced Pope Francis. I also find it interesting that Rock and other mainline Christians sound so much more willing to reach out in fellowship to Pope Francis than they are to reach out to their "dumbed down" or "shallow" brethren in more conservative, less stately congregations. The real subject here is Francis and the Catholics. I don't disagree that Francis seems like a great guy. But I don't see that he's bringing Catholics and Protestants together any more than his two most recent predecessors. Time will tell on that count. In the meantime, we can learn from Francis as he models the character of Christ and the love of God for all of us. I love this assessment: "The beauty of what Francis reminds me is that not only does God die for me but God delights in me." Amen to that. That is good news for all of us.Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the complimentary electronic review copy!

By Bookreader13 He’s trending right now. #PopeinUSA #popeinphilly #popeindc #pontifex But really, this isn’t a big surprise. #popefrancis has captured millions of hearts worldwide. I admit to being a bit smitten myself. And I’m a Protestant.I think what I admire most about this pope is his willingness to question the status quo. He seems (almost) human. Like you. Like me. A believer in Jesus Christ whose faith continues to grow and stretch his beliefs. When I saw this book, I knew I was eager to see what the authors had to offer the ongoing conversation. Paul Rock is the pastor of Second Presbyterian Church in Kansas City. Bill Tammeus is a former Faith section columnist for the Kansas CIty Star, a blogger and a magazine contributor. This book certainly recognized our differences. There are many elements of the Catholic faith that seem mysterious. But I would imagine, to an outsider, many of our Protestant traditions would seem the same. We could all benefit from focusing more on our similarities. In this book, the authors examine how Pope Francis might help us overcome much of our dissension. Perhaps he can help us see, once and for all, that believers (not any one certain denomination) make up the family of God.Taking us back to Scripture, the authors remind us of how radical Jesus’ teachings were in His day. I especially appreciated the portion on how to minister to those who are struggling. It gave a good breakdown of how Jesus handled some of his hardest conversations without causing shame or abandonment. It’s a short book meant to be a conversation starter across denominational and interfaith lines. Maybe together we can all agree on this:“Our common mission is about relationship. I’s about helping women find their voice. It’s about giving people the freedom to determine their own futures. It’s about learning from our own mistakes and not continuing to do things that divide and cause resentment.”

Through an experimental research project that started with 10 participants, Gary acquires the ability to do what he believes is trans-dimensional travel. He finds himself in various situations; each one requiring him to perform different versions of a sick and twisted game called 'The Bull-run'. One minute he's in an obstacle course arena fending off an angry bear intent on having him for lunch, and the next he's in a primordial jungle being relentlessly pursued by a Tyrannosaurus Rex who has a thirst for human blood. In the heavily walled Cities of the future, Gary finds that much of the human population has been wiped out by years of catastrophic events; some of which he had witnessed while on his travels. Though men outnumber women nearly 10 to 1, the women are the ones in control. Outside of the protected cities, the people have learned to fend for themselves by any means necessary. Gary learns that things aren't always what they seem when looking from the outside/in, and he finds the strength to do what's right by rescuing his people and exposing the corruption from within. As Gary continually 'jumps' from one reality to the next, he struggles to figure out how he can stop the jumping before he either loses his mind, or blinks out of existence. The one thing keeping him strong through his trials and tribulations is the woman he may or may not have met, but has definitely fallen in love with. In his many attempts at reaching his goals, he will discover more about himself than he ever could have imagined, as well as the impact the Bull-run has had on those discoveries.

Does energy equal destiny? It’s a race against time for Portland, Oregon, resident Zonny, an avid cyclist whose fate is irrevocably changed when a petroleum plague spreads over the world. The plague puts a disastrous halt to traffic, food production and industry, obliterating the comfortable life she has always known. For Portland, the immediate question becomes: can the city reorganize to feed itself before law and order fails? The sudden energy shock reveals cracks in the social order. And many don't want society to change. The urban-rural divide threatens to become violent. When Zonny's sister Camille, an epidemiologist, tracks the source of the plague, they set out on their bikes to find the cause of the plague and bring back hope to the city residents. Traversing the scenic landscape that is now marred by remnants of the disaster, Zonny finds her beliefs and faith tested in unexpected ways. And, as the expedition becomes more and more divided, the goodness she represents becomes a symbol that’s larger than life along the way. A variety of forces and ideologies attempt to destroy Zonny in this adventure story that tackles philosophical issues of energy, sustenance and progress. Her fate—and the fate of Portland—may finally crumble when she comes up against an unyielding machine that is bigger and more self-contained than anything else she has yet faced. . . .

By Marta Cheng Zonny and her two friends, Tina and Carter, are on a bicycle trip from Montana to Oregon when they become aware of the fact that there’s no more gas to be had anywhere, thanks to some sort of event which has rotted all of the immediate gas supply. The three friends alternate between exultation at having an actual mode of transportation that hasn’t been grounded and a growing trepidation that this lack of gas may have implications more far reaching than merely those affecting the area of the country through which they’re travelling. Once back in Portland, Zonny quickly discovers that the petroleum plague is not just a local problem but one that’s worldwide and, as a result, it not only affects the means by which individuals get around but has more dire consequences in that it brings food production and industry in general to a grinding halt. And so begins an apolcalypse of epic proportions, pitting urbanites against their rural counterparts in an effort to survive. In this reader’s respectful opinion, the cover does not do the book any justice whatsoever. Dangerous Bicycle Mystery Quest is a chilling, thought-provoking book for the simple fact that the premise behind it isn’t in the least bit far-fetched, especially now as we explore alternate biofuel sources in the wake of depleting natural resources. If you’re a reader searching for gore and zombies, you won’t find them in this book. The author, Peter Gelman, explores an apocalyptic scenario with analytical intelligence that will leave readers wondering about the ‘big picture’ in the overall scheme of things, long after the last page has been read.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. a world turned Them and Us By Book Review Peter Gelman's “Dangerous Bicycle Mystery Quest” delivers everything its peculiar title suggests and then some. The story begins with Zonny, a young Portlander, and two friends on the final days of their biking trip from Montana to Oregon. At first the cyclists are only vaguely aware that a plague of some sort has rotted all the petroleum on earth, that the entire planet is virtually at a standstill. The stranded motorists and angry townspeople whom they meet along the roadside, however, are very much aware of the situation and soon the bikers realize that their choice of transportation makes them suspect, possibly part of some sort of “green” conspiracy. But, even safely back in Portland, things are far from simple.Almost overnight the world has taken on an apocalyptic portent. Can a civilized society continue to function without energy? Portland just might be able to survive by turning every conceivable space into garden plots—although all Portlanders do not agree to this plan by any means—but without irrigation, fertilizers, and fuel driven equipment, rural Oregon is totally incapable of agriculture as they know it. People of all sorts arm themselves. Very quickly it has become a world of Them and Us.Enter Autonomax, a huge and ever-expanding jerry-built machine that is propelled forward relentlessly by a combination of steam and man-power, surrounded by huge crowds of hungry, angry people. Autonomax exudes the inexorable force of a juggernaut and it's attraction is such that it manages to seduce almost everyone in its path, including some of Zonny's friends. Against this mysterious force and with no assurance that her quest is even justified, Zonny finds herself back on her bike.A pretty good plot for Marvel Comics, you may think, but can someone make it into an absorbing—in fact, riveting--novel? That's what good writers do, and Peter Gelman is a very good writer indeed. The book is crammed with action, hardly pausing to examine the ideas and paradoxes it proposes, but it is just those ideas that move the book beyond the banal, and somehow, cautiously, leave the reader with a sense of some sort of future.Bookreview.com is delighted to recommend “Dangerous Bicycle Mystery Quest” as a truly excellent novel and suggests you might opt to buy other Peter Gelman books. I did.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Take note Humanity... By Southern This book’s title does not do it justice. “Dangerous Bicycle Mystery Quest”, by Peter Gellman, Is the tale of Zonny, an avid bicyclist who, along with his fiends Tina and Carter, embarks upon a cross country trip from Montana to Oregon. During their trek, they become aware that a sudden fuel shortage has occurred, causing major repercussions nationwide, causing a near shutdown of society, due to the fact that modern infrastructure is so heavily reliant on fossil fuels. Being one of the few people around with a still functioning method of transportation, they discover that society will soon be pitted against itself, namely urbanites and city dwellers will be competing with rural dwellers for what scarce resources remain. This book is very thought provoking, and really stimulates the desire to embrace the fact that humanity is currently depleting scarce resources, and really needs to devote more energy to methods of energy that are renewable and sustainable. We only have one planet, we need to take care of it. I received this book for free in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

Don't miss this thrilling book in the series based on the Emmy Award-winning television show The X-Files!

When a disease-ravaged body is found in the smoldering ruins of the federally funded DyMar genetic research lab, Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully fear that a deadly, manmade plague is on the loose. As the FBI agents investigating the X-Files - cases the bureau has deemed unsolvable - Mulder and Scully pursue the truth wherever it leads, even into the labyrinthine corridors of the FBI...and beyond.

Racing to contain the lethal virus before it can spread, Mulder and Scully make a chilling discovery. Before his death, Dr. David Kennessy, a hotshot cancer researcher at DyMar, had been experimenting with a promising but highly dangerous technology: microscopic biomachines that can cure any disease and heal any wound. In theory this research could be a miracle cure, perhaps even a doorway to immortality. It was also the only way Dr. Kennessy could save his leukemia-stricken son.

But when a second corpse turns up, savagely mutilated from within, it's anything but theoretical. Could machines created to cure have learned to kill? Scrambling for answers, Mulder and Scully are opposed at every step by faceless enemies with all the resources of the government - even perhaps of their own agency - at their command. These enemies will stop at nothing to ensure that the secret of immortality falls into the right hands - their hands.

As sinister forces close in, Scully fights to save the life of an innocent boy while Mulder comes face to face with a crazed and desperate man - a man whose slightest touch brings agonizing death and perhaps a resurrection more horrible still.

Lefcourte A little corny but a great read for Dog Lovers. The sequel is "Michael, Brother of Jerry". If you like London's tales, especially his dog stories or South Seas stories you'll like this. If you've owned an Irish Terrier you'll know how accurate London is, he definitely had owned one and, from the preface, one very similar to Jerry.Jerry is born on a plantation in the Solomon Islands, accompanies a White Trader and lives among the natives. The book is filled with South Sea Islands lore of the turn of the century before last. Right up there with Conrad and Stevenson for lovers of that millieu.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. jerry of the islands By Dale Smith Jerry of the Islands is a good book, which I thoroughly enjoyed. However, it is not for everyone. If you can get past the archaic, and sometimes objectionable use of the language. You will like this book.In the author's defense, this story was written in 1914, and the terms used at that time were considered to be more acceptable.I like this book because I used to own an Irish Terrier, and I considered the dog to be the most splendid animal in all the world. This book brought back memories of the types of things that my dog would, and would not do. So if you have a fondness for dogs, especially Irish Terriers. You will enjoy this book.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Cool Dog and the South Seas!!! By Bill Chadwell How can you go wrong with a combination like that? Jerry is a rough haired Irish Terrier that has ALL the terrier traits in his DNA. Rough, tough, sometimes scoundrel and sometimes clown sometimes protector and sometimes attacker. Jack London has been one of my favorite authors for almost fifty years since I read my first London book "Call of the Wild" when I was about twelve years old. Needles to say I am a dog lover and in that book Buck was to me the king of dogs and the book itself the king of dog tales. Since I have now read "Jerry of the Islands" I may have to retract that statement as Jerry had my undivided attention throughout the story. Like Buck, Jerry shares his adventures with a wide range of characters some good some terribly bad. You think you know where the story is heading then it takes a turn and heads off in a direction quite different but exciting. After "Jerry of the Islands" I just had to read "Michael, Brother of Jerry". Racially sensitive individuals won't appreciate the language in the book but keep in mind this book was written at the turn of the 20th century and it obviously how people spoke back then. At least people in the South Seas anyway. I highly recommend this book if you like dogs, the South Sea Islands, sailing, and adventure. It's a story every bit an equal to "Call of the Wild".

In the lobby of a prestigious Wall Street investment firm, one man is dead and another seriously injured. The man accused of the crime now a fugitive. When the Director of the FBI personally orders Special Agent Sean Kruger to New York City to find the fugitive, Kruger questions the reason. Told to shut up and do his job, he starts looking into the case. What he finds is troubling. Eye-witness accounts seem contrived with little variance between individual testimonies. The more he hears, the more he feels someone is manipulating the story. As the investigation unfolds, he discovers the only information known about the fugitive is a HR file from a former employer. Public records of the man do not exist. The fugitive is a ghost. A ghost who has disappeared. When Kruger unearths information the investment firm lied about the incident in the lobby, he learns there is a possibility the fugitive was defending himself. He also discovers another individual is searching for the fugitive. An individual who has no interest in allowing the truth to be discovered. When the cat and mouse game turns lethal, Kruger must use all of his skills and experience to find the truth, protect the fugitive, and ultimately stay alive.

One of the Top in Its Genre By Kieran Hair “The Fugitive’s Trail” is our introduction to FBI Special Agent Sean Kruger, a character the author appears to have some intent of revisiting. Kruger has been tasked with finding a fugitive, armed with little knowledge other than a highly dubious story regarding the man’s crimes. Kruger learns early on that his suspicions regarding this story are likely true, and that the people looking for the fugitive seem to be hiding some secrets of their own. He must unravel the story while searching for the fugitive, all the while racing against Adam Weber, a man hired to kill the very same fugitive for whom Kruger is searching. That may sound like a lot of story to follow, but it unfolds on the pages rather well. The story is told with an utmost level of clarity, and even the fugitive’s name changes do not complicate the tale to the point that most readers should not be able to follow it with relative ease. The story is not only told with clarity, but with an excellent level of detail. Everything from the settings to the snippets of action here and there are told with crisp imagery that makes the book’s proceedings easy to picture in the mind’s eye.It is very refreshing to read a book that manages to deliver a fairly complex plot while still engaging the reader and making the story easy to understand. This is one of the better books of the genre, and author J.C. Fields certainly deserves some recognition for his work. It can be hard for many writers, even those of immense talent, to make a name for themselves in such a saturated industry. But if Fields makes enough to market the masterpiece he has written here, then he should have no problem doing quite well for himself. Looking forward to more Sean Kruger books in the future.

Fields earned a degree in Psychology and. After college he joined a large computer corporation and has utilized skills learned there to introduce computer usage to numerous companies. This mastery of the computer technology made Fields’ movement into the Blog system of sharing his writing skills with a broad audience a natural transition so that now he can devote his time to his passion for writing, creating short stories and novels in the mystery/thriller and science fiction arenas in the printed form also. He is currently the Treasurer for the Springfield Writers' Guild, a chapter of the Missouri Writer's Guild. THE FUGITIVE’S TRAIL is his publishing debutWhat we are fortunate to read is the first installment in what appears to be a series named after the lead character of these novels- Sean Kruger. Fields writes as though he were preparing a screenplay, so assiduous is his setting the atmosphere of the scenes of his novel. The first chapter is a fully realized crime, adroitly scribed, and this skill follows the writing through the book. The plot can be summarized as follows: How do you find a ghost? That’s what FBI Agent Sean Kruger must do. He is dispatched to New York City to find a fugitive who is accused of killing one man and wounding another in the lobby of a high profile investment firm. Once there, Kruger learns the only information known about the man is his name. Everything else has been erased from the system. Once Kruger digs deeper into the case, he discovers wealthy and powerful men working behind the scenes. These men are determined to keep the truth about the incident and the fugitive from being revealed. In the ensuing search for the suspect, Kruger is pitted against a ruthless foe who is determined to find the fugitive first. When the cat and mouse game turns lethal, Kruger must use all of his skills and experience to save the fugitive, the truth, and even himself.’Sean Kruger immediately steps off the page as a memorable character along the lines of Jack Ryan of Tom Clancy’s indelible creation. It will be interesting to follow the episodes that follow in this series to see if Fields can maintain the high standard he has set for himself – and for Sean Kruger. Bet he does! The Hunter and the Hunted By Marta Cheng The Fugitive’s Trail is an entertaining thriller reminiscent, in some respects, of the movie The Fugitive starring Harrison Ford as the doctor on the run after being wrongfully convicted in the murder of his wife. On his heels was a team of U.S. marshals led by Sam Girard, played by Tommy Lee Jones. In the movie, the characters played by Ford and Jones were constantly in a battle of wits, much like a cat and mouse. In the book, Sean Kruger, a special agent with the FBI is called in to lead an investigation into an alleged break-in/altercation at a Wall Street firm which has left one security detail dead and the other likely crippled for life. The CEO’s story as to the events that went down – as well as everyone else’s account in the firm – is too contrived and Sean’s gut is telling him there’s more to what happened than meets the eye. To make matters worse, the mystery man responsible for the carnage appears to be a ghost. Ghost or not, Sean’s been tasked with finding him and what follows is a proverbial game of cat and mouse, the hunter and the hunted. Each uses their brains and wits to stay one step ahead of the other. Fields’ protagonist, Sean Kruger, has a doctorate in psychology and is used to reading people but his adversary certainly gives him a run for his money. Well written, with plenty of tense moments, some great action and a few unexpected twists along the way, The Fugitive’s Trail makes for a great read. Highly recommended!

When English medical student Penny Drayton chooses an elective term abroad, she holds high hopes of helping the beleaguered people of Uganda.

Upon arriving at the bush mission hospital in Kisimba, Penny soon forges a place for herself in the small medical community there. She also quickly learns how different—and difficult—practicing medicine is in a place fraught with political turmoil and plagued by scarcity.

But it isn’t all work for Penny. Nicholas Sottile, an American epidemiologist and hero of the Vietnam War, catches Penny’s eye—and she almost instantly finds herself swept up by his charisma and intelligence. Yet despite the powerful attraction between them, Penny suspects Nick harbors secrets beneath his charming exterior.

With a political coup looming on the horizon and violence penetrating even the walls of the hospital, Penny prepares to return to her studies in London, even though it means saying good-bye to a place and people she has come to love.

But with the country collapsing around her and a ruthless dictator seizing power, Penny realizes she might not survive to make it back to England—let alone reunite with the man she loves.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Not Just a Love Story By SG Contrary to its cover, Kisimba is not your run-of-the-mill romance novel. While the book does include a love story, the plot is much deeper and provides a unique perspective on what it was like to be a female medical student in a male-dominated field during the early 1970s. For instance, imagine being required to wear stockings and skirts to class! This story also touches upon an important time in Uganda's troubling political history and how terrifying it must have been to be there as a citizen, much less as a visitor volunteering one’s time to provide medical care to its people. In addition to enjoying the story, I gained some insight and understanding into what my own mother's experience might have been as a medical student and medical aid worker in Africa around this same time, given that she has never discussed this difficult time in her life with me. I strongly suggest you give this book a try if you enjoy books largely based on medical and/or political factual events - sprinkled with a little romance on the side.

The author has written a book that has something for everyone. I would love to see what happens to the heroine and hero in the future. This book has all the elements of a love story but set against the African jungle it brings a refreshing tale of romance. It is an awakening of a young woman's independence and sexuality. Bonus...you get a crash course in medicine! I couldn't put the book down!
