Phil Pisani has woven together the story of two courageous people, Maggie Hogan, war correspondent, and Johnny Pero, soldier and CIA operative, as they become enmeshed in the violence and politics of events following WWII, in Korea, and in Vietnam. Although fiction, the character of Maggie, was inspired from the Pulitzer prize winning Marguerite Higgins, an exceptionally brave correspondent during these conflicts who pulverized the glass ceiling imposed on women then. Pisani grips the readers attention by alternating the narrative from Maggie to Johnny. Their paths cross often as they find themselves in the same theatres of war using all their wits to survive and do their jobs well. I felt the portrayal of Maggie's and Johnnies love affair as it developed was passionately yet unsentimentally written. Given the constraints of a relatively short novel I was still able to view the two main characters as complex individuals . It's evident the author has a good understanding of the human condition. The motivations, interactions, and placement of characters in the novel are well conceived. I found it very easy to "time travel" and be present in the scene written. Pisani also knows his American history and many readers will remember these seminal events that are used to escalate the story's tension. In fact, I learned quite a bit more history through Pisani's engaging style. Their is a grit and swagger to the writing that makes it a pleasure to read and helps to empathize with the characters and this past of ours. Finally, the ending of the book was beautifully done.

I have just finished reading "The Making of Perfect Soldiers" by Phil Pisani By CherBear I have just finished reading "The Making of Perfect Soldiers" by Phil Pisani. I was so excited to read the sequel to Maggie's Wars, which I also enjoyed immensely! It amazes me regarding the research that went into the history of writing this book. We sometimes forget that there are things going on behind the scenes that the public is not aware of. This book brings a lot of that to light. I commend Phil Pisani on his helping us to see the history that our parents lived through. Thank you Phil, and I'll be looking for more of your publications!!

My only "complaint" if you will, is this - as a Kindle book - whomever transcribed it to Kindle format was careless. There were a lot of misspellings and punctuation errors which makes reading a good book more of a chore. I'd suggest having someone re-transcribe it and correct those errors. The book itself is awesome!
