The prequel novella to a hot new gay romance series set in Scotland!
Duncan Harris is on the edge. Scandal has shredded his LGBT soccer team’s history-making season, and now the once-unflappable striker is lashing out. Only one person can tame Duncan’s rage and make him feel like himself again… Bullied by schoolmates in his wee village, Brodie Campbell lurked deep in the closet before coming to the city of Glasgow. Here at university he’s out and proud, but the years of abuse have left him emotionally paralyzed. Can flatmate Duncan help Brodie escape his past and heal his wounded heart? As the two lads grow closer, Brodie can’t forget how athletes like Duncan once tortured him. When Duncan attacks an opponent who threatens Brodie, the situation escalates. Soon Brodie doesn’t feel safe anywhere—especially in Duncan’s arms. To defeat the bullies who’ve wrecked his life, his mind, and his ability to love, Brodie must find the strength to fight his own battles. And Duncan must find the strength to let him. Note: The Glasgow Lads series contains dirty talk with a Scottish accent, naughty bits of a gay nature, and characters who call soccer “football.” Approximately 41,000 words/140 pages.Glasgow Lads Series

Review The story of Duncan and Brody touches on a few compelling themes which include coming out, bullying, young love, and virginity. It combines some of the natural awkwardness and angst of youth (drunken forays, uncertainty, and vulnerability) with the more adult issues of homophobia, pride, prejudice and love to deliver a charming tale that shows mistakes can be made...and forgiven, fear can be overwhelming...but conquered, and life can be confusing...and wonderful all rolled into one!--Wendy, Hearts on Fire Reviews I love how the romances have real obstacles like class differences or strong opposing political beliefs that are seemingly insurmountable. But the guys really challenge themselves and work towards acceptance and tolerance.--Karen, For What It's Worth I happen to love sports and m/m romances, and, if this story's any indication, this series seems to be the perfect combination of the two. Throw in some kilted men and how can you go wrong? --Janette, 3 Chicks After Dark
From the Author A wee excerpt from Chapter Six: Duncan got into bed but lay on his back, uncertain whether to turn away from Brodie or toward him. Today's Facebook flirtation had left him on edge. Their online banter was the sort mere pals could have, pals who were so comfortable with each other, they wouldn't misinterpret the joke as a come-on. Pals who could share a twin bed without hooking up. "Why do you love football?" Brodie asked. Duncan blinked hard, startled out of his pondering by Brodie's clear, alert voice. "Why shouldn't I love it?" "Don't be defensive. You're not on trial." "Aren't I?" "Don't start that again," Brodie said. "The turning-my-statement-into-a-question thing. You'll make an annoying psychologist." He kept facing the wall but shifted beneath the covers, his leg nearly brushing Duncan's. "You know that book you were reading?" "Fever Pitch?" "Aye. I don't get it. Why does he care so much about that Arsenal team? They don't give a f*ck about him." "Doesn't matter. It's about being part of something bigger than yourself. Whether you're playing for a team or just supporting one, for ninety minutes the world isn't about you. It's a bit like religion. There's love and faith and even hymns--and it's all built on suffering." Duncan snickered at that last bit, though he thoroughly meant it. "See, that's what I don't get," Brodie said. "The guy in that book, he's so miserable most of the time. It doesn't make sense." "Feelings don't make sense. That's why they're feelings." Duncan's face warmed with passion. He had to find a way to make Brodie understand. "Haven't you ever loved something far past the point of sanity?" After a long moment, Brodie said, "No," in a voice that left the answer's truth a complete mystery.

Should be read 1st, and is a good 1st in series By Amazon Customer Not sure why the author decided to make this a "prequel" - it could very well stand on its own as Book 1 in the series, it's long enough to be considered a full length novel, and I certainly recommend you read it first.Anyhoo - it was a fantastic read. I'm not a soccer (I know, I know - Football) fan. I think I've seen all of six matches my whole life. It didn't stop me from enjoying the book. The descriptions of the matches were more sensory oriented than play oriented, which meant I could feel the pitch and the run and the kick and not feel lost by not knowing soccer terminology. Both Duncan and Brodie were realistic characters who approached issues from different ends of the field. They were able to meet in the middle, sometimes with harsh collisions, and other times with great plays.I'll be adding the rest of this series to my reading list.

Review by Wendy By Hearts On Fire Reviews Prepare to step into the fascinating world of the Glasgow Lads in this debut novella by author Avery Cockburn. You’ll get a full sensory blast as the story comes to life through vivid descriptions, authentic language, and Scottish brogue that will make you swear you are sometimes sitting right on the sidelines of a soccer match in the middle of Scotland – perhaps even one of the adoring Rainbow Regiment rooting for the boys. The story of Duncan and Brody touches on a few compelling themes which include coming out, bullying, young love, and virginity. It combines some of the natural awkwardness and angst of youth (drunken forays, uncertainty, and vulnerability) with the more adult issues of homophobia, pride, prejudice and love to deliver a charming tale that shows mistakes can be made…and forgiven, fear can be overwhelming…but conquered, and life can be confusing…and wonderful all rolled into one!By the time you finish this story, I think you’ll find that like me, you are hooked and primed for more Scottish charm (and of course the lure of men in kilts doesn’t hurt either). Sign me up for book number two! I’m very intrigued by the potential for a relationship between John and Fergus, characters who were introduced in this book and definitely have a hurdle or two to overcome on their journey, but it doesn’t stop there. The whole series is on my radar. Until then, follow my lead and check out this first book. Recommended!!
