The townsfolk living between San Antonio and Cheyenne brace themselves for the confrontation of a lifetime when the giant Bull Hunter and brawny gunslinger Pete Reeve face each other down. Reeve wounds Bull Hunters uncle in the ensuing gunfight and Bull sets out to track down the gunman. Not for revenge but to silence those who laughed at him and said he was too big to be any good. Bull eventually finds Reeve in a jailhouse waiting to be hung for murder but it will take more than a lawman to keep Bull away from his prey. One of the greatest Max Brand novels is re-released here in its full splendour—relive the west in style and settle down to read one of the best novels by one of the best west novelists in the world. Editorial Review Max Brand has the rare distinction of being the writer who can really bring the best out of his characters. “Gunman’s Reckoning” is proof of his mastery of the character. Ask a writer how to create great characters, and they will tell you that they study a lot of people in this world. They watch how people interact with each other and they take the directors in life—lust, greed, hatred, piety—and form stories. A Western writer like Max Brand is a master of knowing about people like you and me and turning us into characters. Now, as a Western reader, you want the good guy, the bad guy, the sheriff, the marshal and that little ole girl who needs a husband now her father is gone. Brand delivers, and he delivers all the other ingredients, too—action, revenge, twists, turns and struggles. That is why you will enjoy “Gunman’s Reckoning.” Because it’s a book worthy of reading and a book that you won’t want to put down, and because it’s a Western masterpiece. Now, if you were an artist, you would want to see the “Mona Lisa,” correct? As a Western reader, you will want to read “Gunman’s Reckoning.”

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Bull Hunter, easy does it By Twostory Max Brand writes great classic westerns and this is one of them. It's a tale of a big, strong but gentle man, Bull Hunter who means no harm. Bull learns life's lessons well as he travels away from his abusive relatives to enter the real world. Along the way he befriends a renowned gun fighter who takes him under his wing and trains him in the ways of a fast gun. Never losing his gentle manner and ways, Bull can't help but make new friends along his journey. But there are foes who want to end Bull's life. They find Bull a tough man to beat. The story glides along well with good characters and a sound connection between man and elements. This is one of the most enjoyable Max Brand tales I've read so far. Recommended, of course.
