Hank, now sixteen, settled with his Pa and Uncle Mac in the Platte Valley three years earlier. His father set up a trading post where immigrants traveling the Mormon or Oregon Trails stop for supplies. In the past Pa and Hank did not get along, although they had settled their main differences two years ago, but conflict arises between them again when Pa remarries. Hank's Uncle Mac is always there to ease the tension. When life gets too tedious, Hank finds comfort in his "Eagle’s Nest, " a tall cottonwood tree that grows in the valley overlooking the merging North and South Platte Rivers. Here he watches the growth of the town. New people settle near Twin Rivers including Preacher Twiddle and his large family. Hank likes the daughter, Becca. Although Becca’s father forbids them to be together, they become good friends and only she knows about his eagle’s nest. Much to his stepmother's dismay, Hank makes friends with a Pawnee boy. She refuses to allow him in her house. Straight-laced and prejudiced, she also refuses to help a slave family escape from bounty hunters. The winter is hard and long. Food is scarce. When Hank goes hunting rabbits in the valley, he gets lost in a sudden blizzard and tangles with a mysterious wild creature. Encouraged by his new wife, Pa enrolls Hank in an Eastern school where he can prepare to be a doctor. Hank refuses to go. He runs away with horse wranglers who hunt for wild horses in Western Nebraska. When he comes home with his new horse, Lady, he finds that Becca’s father has taken her and her family back to Missouri.

Is an excellent book for making book reports in school, about the life of a young man growing up in the time span. The story continues on a daily interesting basis, was always positive taking one day at a time. It was hard to put the book down. It is not just for children but brings out history of the time era and could be interesting for all ages.I am anxiously awaiting for the third book to come out.

#1 Amazon Best-Seller in Evangelism!

Equip yourself with practical and profound Christian responses to every “untouchable” topic.

There are some things we would rather not talk about. There are issues we are unwilling to discuss. We consider them “off-limits,” and when they come up, we try to change the subject as quickly as possible:

Untouchable Topics
  • Absolute truth and Holiness
  • Heaven and hell and Politics
  • Miracles and Purity
  • Repentance and Generosity
  • Race and Gay marriage

But we live in a world that is too full of difficult challenges and controversial issues for us to refuse to engage.

The Scriptures were given so that Christians could be “thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:17 NIV). One of those “good works” is the ability to show a sincere inquirer that God has provided wise answers and reliable guidance not only for how to get to heaven, but also for how to respond and live effectively in this confused generation.

In Untouchables, Jack Hilligoss demonstrates how God’s Word never hides from any subject but, rather, handles these sensitive and intimidating topics with grace and truth.

Pick up a copy of Untouchables today and equip yourself for evangelism!

Untouchables: Honest Conversations About Subjects We Would Rather Not Discuss, by Jack Hilligoss

About the Author Jack Hilligoss is a husband, father, pastor, and Christ follower. He has been a pastor for 27 years, discipling and equipping believers from small churches in Midwestern cornfields to multi-cultural churches in the inner city, to a growing and community-impacting church in Lake Wales, Florida. During that time, he has learned that people are all very much the same. They have the same questions and they need the same hope. And, he has learned, everyone needs a pastor—someone who will help them think about life; someone who will show them how to hold their lives up to the light of Scripture and see from a perspective that may give them eternal meaning in the midst of the temporal rush of life. That is Jack’s passion, and that is how he has spent his life.

Great topics and a very enjoyable read By John F Laderer The book was easy to understand and engaged me to think about things which I probably would not have normally engaged in my day-to-day life. I appreciated the discussions on all the different topics that do seem to be "untouchable" in today's world. Very interesting and enjoyable.

A guide to navigate the controversial topic "land-mines" of modern socity By the webmaster Mr. Hilligoss takes on the most sensitive issues that plague our society and separate us from what God wants us to be. He uses brilliant (and at times, humorous) analogies and topical biblical references to drive home his keen insights obtained from years of life experience and theological studies. I strongly recommend this book and invite you to read the first couple of chapters that are available through Amazon cloud reader. If you're like me, you'll consider the 7.99 a more than fair price to read the remainder of this excellent book.

I sat down in the out patient area at the Heart of Florida Hospital with my wife waiting to have her last Kidney Stone to be zapped. To put it another way they break it into small pieces so it will pass. We have been going through this 3 times now. By 5:30 Thursday afternoon I had read all but the last 3 chapters. No I am not a fast reader the Hospital was running 2 hours behind. So the Doctor came out and told me he had good news he could not find the last Kidney stone and it was just there 2 weeks ago during all of the test. People God does still heal and that said I will have the honor of hearing Pastor Jack tomorrow morning at Church. He is our Pastor and we are so grateful to God for that. He has raised our community to heights not seen in many towns and tomorrow morning I will hear the word of God delivered by Pastor Jack Hilligoss in our humble town of Lake Wales. Robert.M. Williams

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Excellent 1890's African adventure novel By gzim I have been a Bertram Mitford fan for a number of years. Of the four African adventure novels that I have read by him, "The Sign of the Spider" is my favorite.Mitford was a contemporary of the much more famous H. Rider Haggard, and like Haggard wrote stories of adventure set in the colonial days of south Africa. He often mixed in supernatural/fantasy elements, also like Haggard. But he was far from being a mere Haggard imitator, as many of the "Lost Race" writers of the era were. Mitford was original and had his own voice. His world view and fictional approach were very different from Haggard's. H. Rider Haggard was at heart a Romanticist, and he had an endless faith in the dignity and ethical superiority of the Englishman. To Haggard, colonialism conferred blessings on the native Africans, and English colonial policy was based upon philanthropy and motivated by the noble cause of elevating the natives to a state of enlightened Christian civilization. Mitford, on the other hand, was a realist and even a naturalist. Mitford's focus charactors are often self-serving scoundrels with no reservations about straying beyond the boundaries of the law into criminal activities. Stanninghame, the protagonist of "the Sign of the Spider", abandons his family in England, and has no qualms about joining up with a slaving party after arriving in Africa and finding little success in legitimate commercial ventures. No Haggard hero would ever dream of such a thing. Likewise, to Mitford English colonial policy was based solely on mercantile gain and it ruthlessly exploited the native population. Making money and exerting control were the primary objectives of the British colonial presence. In this respect Mitford's approach was much more modern than Haggard's, and since Mitford is a highly talented story teller, it is surprising he has not found a larger contemporary following. The Sign of the Spider is a grand action adventure story incorporating well-developed, if often amoral, characters. The worshippers of the spider are an intriguing, well-realized lost race, and Stanninghame's final encounter with the giant Spider God with hideous death hanging in one balance and escape with a fortune of uncut diamonds hanging in the other is a scene that can stand in power and intensity beside Frodo's fight with Shelob or the epic battle scenes in "King Solomon's Mines". The book is highly recommended for fans of the rich fin de siecle fantasy/adventure tradition.By the way, Mitford's earlier novel "The Weird of Deadly Hollow", a book about a horrible murder and an even more horrible revenge, is the grimmest book I have ever read. In "The Sign of the Spider", Mitford manages a happy ending - of sorts.

Horrific adventures in late nineteenth-century Africa By Patto Laurence Stanninghame is one of the most complex heroes I've encountered in Victorian fiction - a rogue and a cynic with noble qualities. We first meet him as a gentleman living in genteel poverty in the London suburbs, burdened with a shrewish wife, three children and a rapidly shrinking bank account. His only assets are hunting skills, reckless courage and nerves of steel. So he ships out to Johannesburg to seek his fortune, or die doing it.In South Africa our hero does two despicable things. He gets involved with a beautiful young woman in Johannesburg without mentioning the wife and kids in London. And he turns slave trader up country to repair his finances. Somehow, despite this unworthy conduct, Stanninghame continues to engage our interest. His fearlessness, thoroughbred manners, caustic humor and iron self-control are seductive. The action revolves around Stanninghame's horrific adventures in the miasmic African forests and the plains that are home to the People of the Spider. Ingenious twists of plot and Fate kept me glued to my armchair.Bertram Mitford's depictions of cannibalism, tribal warfare, ritual sacrifice and slave raids are shockingly graphic for a late Victorian writer. An aristocratic colonial with broad life experience, Mitford spoke Zulu and once served with the frontier mounted police. As a popular fiction writer he was an important contributor to the high romance of Africa. The Sign of the Spider was first published in 1896 to great success. The introduction, which I suggest reading after the book, goes deep into some fascinating theories on the symbolism of the spider and the behavior of the characters in terms of fin de siècle racism and imperialism. So while at first I groaned at the imperfections of the hero, I was all the more intrigued by the ways in which he (somewhat) redeemed himself. The Sign of the Spider is a product of the politics and attitudes of its times. But it also transcends those attitudes in some ways. This is a book worth reading. I recommend it to readers who might enjoy a good strong mix of adventure, history, love and moral ironies.

I am impressed with his writing as well as with his grasp of character. His eye for the haps, mishaps, and circumstances of life is sharp, observant, and to the point. His characters are fully three-dimensional, they talk, act and behave like real people. I can't recall any scene in the story where the actions and motivations of the characters didn't seem natural. His descriptions are good, in-depth and set the scene well. Mitford writes knowingly of Africa, yet, he never seems to veer of into travelogue-like monologues on the landscape. Then again, this story isn't just about Africa, it's really a story about the men that risked all to make great fortunes there in the days when the British Empire was at it's height. One thing is for sure, the hero of our story does things that he dare not speak of in later life. This is a sweeping tale of adventure across the vast uncharted interior of Africa as it was before Western mores of civilization changed it forever. It's a tale of slave raiders, cannibals, fearless enemies in the vast lawlessness of Central Africa. 'One of the dark places of the World,' where mercy is a rare commodity, and morality is just a word. For free on Kindle. If you are in the mood for something out of the ordinary, then this story is just the ticket.

Ten years ago, Gary Moyer became only the third person to successfully navigate the 40 mile Gunnison Canyon section of the Moose River. He had a special talent and everybody knew it, including a young aspiring adventurist friend, Blake Henson, and an up and coming photo journalist/TV producer Nathan Garner. What would motivate people to go on a suicide adventure trip through unimaginable river conditions making a documentary of a river adventure? Is it the possibility that media types want a lot of glory and adrenaline rushes; with little skill, ability and preparation for extreme risk? Where does good common sense, logic, ethics and the desire to be famous come into play? Is it possible to have all of the above and still survive in a hostile environment? What was to be a once in a lifetime adventure trip down one of North America’s wildest rivers turned into a trip of desperate measures and wilderness survival.

But from Tom, there now came words, spoken as if the entire forest were speaking, "I am now your Drachma! Heed well these words, Master Gilsen. Your life and your work have been a blessed gift to these, my people. They shall be given the power to protect you. Accept the help, then of Hermes and Alex but also of Marilyn. You shall need the assistance of all!" In The Healer's Defense, the quiet world of fifteenth century Shepperton is suddenly turned on its side as three threats from outside suddenly appear. As Craycroft and Kerlin determine the nature of the threats, Robert Gilsen and his pregnant bride, Judy, get sent into the interior of the island for protection. And Tom, grandson of Drachma, is dispatched toward the winds of time for help. So now, we have a new set of characters to do battle with the likes of Antoine LeGace, Emile Patronis, and the nefarious Count Gregorio. And they include the likes of Diego Monteverde, the seafaring prince; Alexandra, the six-year-old great-granddaughter of Cartho; and the mysterious Chauncey. And who is it, but Marilyn Gilsen, Robert's former spouse from the twentieth century who now comes across the chasm of time to aid their cause. And now can Tom, as the new Drachma, properly set up his defense of the realm so precious to his grandfather?

By Kelly Smith Reviews I received an advance copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.A note to those reading, this is the first book in the Heir Of Drachma Trilogy, which is a continuation of the Book Of Drachma Trilogy. I recommend you read those three books before you pick up this one. Trust me, you'll be glad you did!In Mr. Cook's books, science and fantasy go hand in hand and weave a spell around you, capturing you into their world. I love stories the older they're set, and the 1400's is a very interesting time in medicine (as the main character, Robert Gilsen, was a doctor in the twentieth century), and I think I actually learned more than I thought I would. As a fantasy fan, I found this to be less "fantastical" than others, but somehow that makes it better. This is somehow believable, and you feel like somehow you could enter the story yourself. I love the characters, the scenery and the writing style. While this series is nothing like J.R.R. Tolkien (whom I consider to be the godfather of fantasy), Mr. Cook's writing style reminds me of his. It's whimsical, mysterious, a little dangerous and it gives you characters you can come to love. He also proves that you don't need excessive sex or bloodshed to make a dent in the fantasy literary market in the twenty-first century!Even if you think you don't like fantasy, give this book a try! I had so much fun reading it and can't wait for the next book!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. slow starter By Barbara Anderson The start of the book was slow. The author was trying to get us to know the characters, I think. After the training starts, it move along pretty well. The end of the book leaves room for a sequel, so I"ll look forward to that. All in all, it's a good read.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Carson Thorn parked his truck in front of the rock-sided building that housed offices of the Little Horn, Texas, chapter of the Lone Star Cowboy League. As distracted as he was, he couldn't help but think about the history of the century-old group. It had started as a service organization, serving communities and ranchers across the state. Today it felt more like the last line of defense for ranchers who were being hit hard by thieves. The cattle rustling had started a month ago and showed no signs of letting up.At today's meeting the other members were expecting answers. They wanted him to come up with solutions. He wished he had some. And he wished he was anywhere else on a Thursday in October than in town at this meeting. He grabbed his briefcase and locked his truck. As he did, he noticed a white sedan pull into another parking space. He didn't stop to see who it might be. He had paperwork to hand over to the league secretary, and Byron McKay, one of the biggest ranchers in the state, was waiting to talk to him. That wasn't a conversation Carson looked forward to. He never looked forward to talking to Byron. Knowing that Byron's ranch had recently been hit by the thieves, Carson knew the conversation wouldn't be pleasant. This was one of those days when he wished he could live in a community and not be involved.Someone must have been looking out for him, giving him one thing to be thankful for. Ingrid Edwards, the league secretary, wasn't at her desk. He sighed with relief. One bullet dodged. Now he just had to face Byron. The older man was already seated in the boardroom, a stack of papers in front of him."Byron." Carson pulled off the sport coat he'd worn and tossed it on the back of his chair. He rolled up his sleeves and then poured himself a glass of water."This has to be stopped, Carson." Byron pushed himself out of his chair and shed his own jacket. The rancher, a little paunchy and with thinning, strawberry blond hair, managed to knock over his own water glass.Carson tossed him a roll of paper towels. He wasn't playing maid to anyone, not even a McKay. He cringed, thinking of Byron's offspring, twin teenaged boys who were sure to be chips off the old block someday. He gave the other man a careful look, not wanting to wade too far in."I'm aware that it has to stop, Byron. I'm not sure what you want me personally to do about it. Do you want me on patrol? Do you want me to guard your livestock?""We need a plan. And maybe some of us do need to patrol. Lucy Benson is a great sheriff, but I'm not sure she's up to snuff on this case.""Lucy is just fine." Carson sat down in his chair at the end of the table. Times like this he'd like it if someone else was the local chapter president."Well, I for one think that Derek Donovan should be questioned.""Why do you think that?" Carson asked the question, but he knew the answer."Because he got out of prison and that's when all of this started." McKay slammed his meaty fist on the top of the table."Stop blaming my grandson," a shaky voice said from the open door.Carson rubbed a hand over his face and groaned."Iva.""Yes, Iva." The older woman pushed her walker into the room. "I'm still a member, Carson Thorn, and don't you forget that.""No one is forgetting." Carson stood and went to her side to pull out a chair for her. She was nearing eighty, and in the past few months, Parkinson's had started to take a toll on her health. But Iva wasn't letting it stop her, not until she didn't have a say in the matter. She waved him away, not taking the offered chair. "I'm not feeling the best, so I'm not staying for the meeting. I just wanted to confront you all and tell you this neighbor-blaming-neighbor business has to stop."Byron McKay faced the woman, his tone only slightly more gentle. "I've lost more cattle and equipment, Iva. My boys lost a couple of dirt bikes. This thief knows us and knows our ranches."Iva shook her head and raised a frail hand that jerked as she pointed an unsteady finger at the rancher. Her arm trembled as she tried to steady the gesture, adding a fierce glare that had Carson smiling. No one could beat down Iva Donovan. Even with her failing health she was a force to be reckoned with."Watch how you talk about my family, you bully in a Stetson.""I'm not running you down, Iva. You've had it tough and none of us blames you.""If you blame my kin, you blame me." She shook her head at the chair Carson offered. "My grandson made mistakes and paid for those crimes. I'll not have you pointing fingers at him.""Iva, you know we have to look at everyone in a situation like this," Carson said, hoping he sounded diplomatic and not as suspicious as he really felt."We don't have to start accusing our neighbors or searching their homes and farms," Iva argued. She rested heavily on the walker as she looked from Carson to the other members who were trickling in. "Don't come to my place again unless you have real evidence."Carson shot Byron McKay a warning look that silenced him. "Iva, unless they have a reason, they won't search your place.""They don't have a reason," Iva insisted with a growl. "And you aren't going to harass my family.""No, Iva, we won't do that." Carson took charge because he could see Iva weakening as her anger took over. She'd always been a spitfire and having Parkinson's hadn't taken any of her orneriness away, just her energy. "We've got the police on this and our own investigation team. We're putting up surveillance cameras. We'll figure out who's responsible.""I hope you do," she said a little more calmly. "Now I have to go, so you all continue on without me.""Let me walk you out to your car," he offered."Hey, we still have things to discuss. You're the chapter president and you can't just walk out, Carson," Byron McKay bellowed."Byron, relax. I'm walking Iva to her car and I'll be back." Carson reached for the door, and Iva smiled up at him. Her blue eyes were faded and rimmed with red, but she winked and he saw that spunk that had gotten her through some tough times."Byron McKay has more bluster than sense," Iva snipped as they walked out of the meeting room."He does tend to go on." He helped Iva through the main room and headed her toward the doors. He nodded at Ingrid Edwards, once again behind her desk. She was shuffling through a drawer but she smiled up at him, her glasses sliding down her nose and red hair coming loose from a clip that held it to the top of her head. She winked and he wasn't quite sure what to do.Last week she'd brought him fried chicken. The week before that, brownies. Ingrid was on the prowl, looking for a husband before she turned twenty-six. Or so the rumor went. He didn't want to hurt her feelings, but she'd have to look elsewhere. He was thirty-one and had no intention of settling down."It isn't my Derek," Iva muttered as they headed for the front door. "I know you think you know him, Carson Thorn, but you don't. He's a changed boy.""He's almost twenty, Iva. That's not really a boy.""He's still my boy and I won't let you or anyone else run him down. I appreciate what you've done over the years, but when it comes to family, I draw the line.""As you should."She stopped just feet short of the door, leaning heavily on the walker. She studied him with those blue eyes of hers. "I've always appreciated your help.""My help?""The lawyer, for Derek."He cleared his throat and glanced out the door, hoping to avoid a conversation he didn't want to have. But she wouldn't let it go."Johnny Mac fixing my truck," Iva continued. "And that beef in my fridge.""We should go. I need to get in there before Byron and the others really do form a posse like they've been discussing. We can't have them riding off on horses, guns blazing."She laughed a gravely sounding laugh. "Your daddy was made of the same cloth as that Byron McKay. You're a different breed. Don't be like them.""I try not to be.""You ain't been to church in a good long while."He should have known it would come back to that. "I've been busy.""Oh, land's sakes, don't give me that. I'm not sure what burr got under your saddle, but it isn't so big that God can't fix it."He smiled and shook his head. "I know He's capable. But there's no burr, just a busy life.""Help me to my car, then."They were on the sidewalk heading for the old Buick Iva drove. And that's when he saw Ruby Donovan. She stood in front of the white car dressed in shorts, canvas sneakers and a T-shirt. Her auburn hair lifted slightly in the breeze and she pushed it back and held it with her hand as she watched him approach. Seeing her like that took him back to the first time he'd seen her. She'd been fifteen. He'd been seventeen. She'd just gotten off some crazy ride at the county fair. She'd been laughing at something her friend had said and walking toward the Ferris wheel.Today felt a lot like that moment when they'd met. And nothing like that moment. Today when she looked at him her hazel eyes didn't sparkle. Her mouth didn't form that generous smile. No, she glared. He felt more than a little edgy seeing her up close and in person for the first time in twelve years. One of these days he'd like to get an answer from her. He'd like to know what he'd done to deserve her walking away without even saying goodbye. He'd like to know how she'd gone from wanting to spend a life together to wanting nothing more than a free ride to college, compliments of his father. But maybe it was better if he didn't know.Ruby sucked in a breath and tried to pretend her heart wasn't tripping all over itself the way it had always tripped when she saw Carson Thorn. She'd managed to avoid him for a dozen years. That hadn't been easy considering he lived just down the road from her grandmother. But somehow on her odd trips home she'd managed. But seeing him, the tall rancher with the dark brown hair and brown eyes that a girl could get lost in, was like going back. It was like being in love again. And she wasn't in love. He was no longer that boy, and she was no longer an impressionable teenage girl who believed in happy-ever-after.It was this man who had taken those dreams from her. This man and his family. Until she'd met the Thorns she had always been good enough. To see him helping her Gran to the car, that sizzled down deep where the red in her hair lived waiting to be unleashed. She stepped forward, ignoring the confused look on his face. She ignored expensive cologne that smelled like the mountains and the ocean and everything good in between. She tried, desperately, to ignore the fact that the air seemed too thick to breathe when he was in her space. The need for oxygen meant she had to get him gone as quickly as possible."Thank you, Carson. I'll help her to the car.""Be nice, Ruby Jo," Iva warned."I'm being nice." Ruby stepped close to help her grandmother off the sidewalk.Iva leaned in. "No, you're showing your claws. You have no idea, Ruby.""I have ideas." She looked back. Carson was still there, watching them. Her younger brother, Derek, was nowhere to be found. He'd said something about errands to run and he'd get a ride home. She didn't like when he disappeared. She trusted him, but since cattle had started disappearing just a little too close to the time Derek had been released from prison, she knew he was going to continue to be a suspect until someone was caught. These days everyone was a suspect. She was surprised no one had tried to blame her since she'd arrived back in town only a few weeks ago.Carson interrupted her thoughts, and that was too bad because she'd been trying to block him from her mind and her memories. He stepped past her and opened the car door.Once Iva was situated, Ruby took her purse out of the walker and folded the contraption up to store it in the trunk of the car. She turned, and Carson Thorn was there. Without a word, he took the walker from her hands. If she'd trusted herself to speak, she would have told him that she could take care of things herself.Funny that his name was Thorn, because he was a real thorn in her side. A thorn she'd prayed like the apostle Paul that God would remove from her. She'd tried to pray away his memory. And now? She didn't need him lurking, being kind, respectful. She needed him to go away and not be a reminder of everything she'd lost and why she'd left Little Horn.If it hadn't been for Iva and Derek, she would have stayed in Oklahoma, and then she wouldn't have had this issue to deal with. But she was home. And they did need her here. Her grandmother needed her."Is that frown for me?"What should she say to that? She could say, of course it wasn't. Or she could admit that it was. "I didn't realize I was frowning."He leaned against the back of the car, long legs in new jeans and those expensive boots of his. The walker was still in his hands."You were definitely frowning.""I should have sold the ranch and convinced Gran and Derek to move to Oklahoma with me," she admitted without intending to."What would have been the fun in that? You're not a city girl, Ruby. You were born and raised in Hill Country, and you can't outrun it.""I've been living in the city a long time, and I'm adaptable."His smile faded. "Yes, I guess you are."She wondered about that smile, why he acted as if it was all about him. She wondered if he had any clue how much his dad and sister had hurt her. How much he'd hurt her? It wasn't as if she'd wanted to stay gone from her home. She'd stayed gone because she hadn't been able to imagine seeing him with someone else. She was only back because Gran's health had deteriorated and someone had to look out for Derek."Listen, we don't have to do this. When we see each other, we don't have to get tugged back into the past. It was a long time ago and I'm over it. I'm sure you're over it since… " She shook her head. She wasn't going there. "I have work to do."He stepped away from the back of the car and pointed, indicating she should open the trunk. When she did, he lifted the walker and stowed it inside. "There you go. Is there anything else you need help with?"She stared up at the tall, overpowering rancher, surprised by the offer. She tried to see the boy she'd known in the face of this ruggedly handsome stranger. The features were stronger, more defined, more…everything. His eyes were shuttered against emotion. But she saw a flicker, maybe a hint of warmth."I don't need help. We've always gotten along just fine.""Did you put up the surveillance cameras the league handed out?""I have them in a box. I haven't had a chance to take them out, and I don't know if I can do it myself.""I can help you put them up."

Someone is stealing from nearly all the ranches, nothing big, nothing that makes sense, just a few things here and there. And not only that, someone anonymously helps out those in need, things just appearing, and no one knows from where. People are pointing fingers, blaming each other, and the town is torn.In the midst of all this turmoil, Carson's sister drops off her little son, and says she can't do it anymore, and leaves.Ruby doesn't have it much better. She had to quit her job in the city, come back home to take care of her grandmother, the ranch is failing, her brother is blamed for the thievery, and she has to face Carson again, after twelve years. For Ruby and Carson to find a moment of peace to work in their past, and trying to build something new and lasting, is a miracle. There's so much going on in this town, the disorder is immeasurable. The amount of compassion, forgiveness and trust that is needed to build a bridge over the past hurt, is inestimable. The characters in this story have all faced hard times, have all seen the ugly side of life, and are trying to make it better. Not only for themselves, but to others around them as well. The message of the story comes through clear, when grace and mercy is shown upon us, the least we can do, is to give it to others around us as well, who have hurt or done wrong to us.This is the book one of the new series, and just learning about the people in this community, and the odd crimes happening in the neighborhood, I think this will be an interesting series to follow, and learn more about the destiny of the folks at Lone Star~ Four Spoons

By Love 2 Read Novels Ruby Donovan has always loved Carson Thorn and was planning a future with him, that is, until Carson's family drove her away. Carson couldn't understand why Ruby left and his heart still aches. It's been twelve years but now Ruby is back to lend a hand to her aging grandmother. The feelings between Carson and Ruby are still very strong, though they won't t talk about what happened. Carson is head of the Lone Star Cowboy League and they are looking into all the thefts the ranchers have recently had. When Ruby's brother becomes the prime suspect, she longs to convince Carson that her brother has changed. Will he believe her and will they finally put to rest the problems of the past to forge a second chance at love? This was a great start to the Lone Star Cowboy League series. The author introduces you to all the folks you'll be getting to know. This book focused on Ruby and Carson, who definitely had chemistry! Ruby was a strong, kindhearted woman who loved deeply. Carson was a rugged cowboy with a heart of gold. Someone you'd want on your side. I thoroughly enjoyed Ruby's grandmother, Iva. She was a sweet and wise lady. Ruby's brother, Derek is a guy I hope we see more of in future books. There is a faith thread running through the story and you see it lived out in a believable way. This is a miniseries so although this story has a conclusion there are some loose ends that are left unresolved. A Reunion for the Rancher definitely left me with an anticipation of the stories to follow. If you enjoy a sweet romance with a splash of conflict and a dash of mystery then I would encourage you to head on down to Little Horn, Texas and see how just how the rancher's reunion turned out. Be sure to keep a watchful eye though, there have been a lot of thefts lately.*This complimentary copy was provided by Harlequin through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review*For more information about this book or other books by Brenda Minton, I recommend you visit her website at http://www.brendaminton.net/

In this first book, we meet lonely rancher, Carson Thorn. His sister drops off her five year old son then leaves, promising to be back. Carson takes steps to ensure his nephew grows up in a stable home where he learns the values of life.Carson's ex-girlfriend is back. And so are all the questions that lie between them as to why they broke up. Neither really understand the issues surrounding it and they can't move forward until the truth is revealed. Meanwhile, Ruby's brother is fresh out of jail after theft and now that ranchers are losing things, some point the finger straight at her brother!Lone Star Cowboy LeagueBook 1The town is being split over the mysteries property that comes up missing, and over the new items that are delivered to struggling families. Nobody really knows anything, but some are pointing fingers. It will take five more books before the truth is revealed.Another big thing happens at the end of this book. I think it's related to the whole thing, but I'm not quite sure how!I was ready to give this book five stars, but didn't like the rushed "make up" session at the end. I think it should have been expanded several chapters so it could have been more believable...

Contemplation Magic can give you great insight and wisdom, and will help you develop abilities and create new aspects of your personality. There is one small problem – there’s lots of misinformation out there when it comes to the 72 Names. Although there are some first-rate books, and even a few useful websites, there’s a lot of poorly researched material that will lead you away from the magic. More than 300 individual powers are explored in this book. The Names are written as clearly and beautifully as possible, bound by a solid circle to enhance your focus. Each letter was handcrafted, based on traditional techniques and the visual requirements of modern readers. The Names in this book are the most accurate and accessible that you can find. You will discover how to: Use the names to access angelic power. Work with Contemplation Magic to gain insight and wisdom. Use Results Magic to change yourself and your world. It is truly powerful By Boots I stumbled across Damon Brand's books and The Gallery of Magick by accident a week or so ago, just before this book was released and the timing couldn't have been more perfect. This little book seems so simple its almost too good to be true and it would be easy to dismiss it. But this is one of the most potent things I think I've ever read. It literally saved my life.I have followed the author's advice and let the sigils take me on my own personal journey of exploration and as such I've strayed from some of recommendations around pacing myself. I have instead followed an intuitive path of insights leading me from one name to another and sometimes back around again to the starting point.I know this book has just been released but already it's changed my internal perspective in very tangible ways. I am so grateful to the author I can't thank her enough.I wasn't a believer in magick before but I am now!

By Midwest Man Before I launch into my review, let me say words that describe this book: PRACTICAL, DESCRIPTIVE, SUCCESS, it WORKS, a FEW MINUTES, POWER, EXPERIENCE, and I have already found Good Things from reading it.I was not sure how to title this review. Why?I was going to say, "An intense Primer". Occasionally a book will cause me to reflect upon my first year of "what is magick?" trials, insecurity, and variable-strength results. This book gives a lot of PRACTICAL strategies to deep questions I wish I had 5 years ago. But it isn't written like a Primer. "Old hands" to magick will find it useful.I was going to say, "An intense manual for the Names". It does give a lot of easy-to-find information, in a clear, straightforward way that stays on point and is DESCRIPTIVE, yet embraces brevity. But it's not dry, and Zanna writes personably.I bought it because I have had much SUCCESS using the materials presented by Damon Brand, who knows this author and interviewed her for readers on his website. They are members of The Gallery of Magick, a group of people who only bother with magick that WORKS, and that write good, clear, usable stuff.Blaise educates the reader in the viewpoint of Contemplative Magick as a subset of Results Magick, and likens them to squares and rectangles, respectively. The old Geometry adage, "All squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares" came to mind quickly. You get results with Contemplative Magick, but you do not use the trappings and long rituals more commonly found in Results-based grimoires. The Magick presented here can be done in a FEW MINUTES. Or people can stretch it out. Blaise stressed that since Contemplative Magick is personal and internal-based, there is no "Ritual 1.0". She does give detailed examples for each type, Contemplative and Results, and summarizes each set of steps.I FOUND:1) though she also cites trials and investigations by The Gallery, that her listed powers for each Name do not always match those by Damon. Why should they? If it works, it WORKS.2) excellent renderings of the Hebrew alef-beis for each Name's sigil.3) some things I needed to know, for me. You will find things for you, I believe, that you would want to stay in your journal and not in a review online.4) MOST IMPORTANTLY: the sigils have POWER. I found myself staring at the characters of one Name with which I have become familiar since January, and didn't immediately realize what it stood for. This was an important test I didn't realize I was conducting until I had that EXPERIENCE.I was going to wait to write a review until I had multiple results like I have for other books, but I want people to know now that I have already found Good Things from reading it and trying it out.To sum up: PRACTICAL, DESCRIPTIVE, SUCCESS, it WORKS, a FEW MINUTES, POWER, EXPERIENCE, and I have already found Good Things from reading it.

I'm relatively new at working with the Gallery of Magick materials, and feel remarkably blessed in stumbling upon them. The diagrams are so beautiful I may have some enlarged as works of art. The writing is kind, direct, personable, elegant and powerful. Most importantly, they work. I used one at the red lights driving to a worksite, a trip that takes about 10 minutes. So I reckon I was doing the actual 'magick' about 2-3 minutes max. Potentially volatile situation sorted before I arrived. I sat in a meeting reading a short email that resolved it in wonder. That was the third thing I used it for. The first two resolved very quickly as well. While doing the work, I can feel the energy around the situation involved shifting, then clearly when it has shifted. For the few dollars Ms Blaise is asking , this work is a total steal which I will use for many years to come. Though I enjoy the kindle book, I may have to invest in the print one too. Reading the book is enlightening; if you actually use it, you will be rewarded. Highly recommended.

Following his real life adventure with Puckwudgies in the eerie Bridgewater Triangle, author Bill Russo turns to fiction in this tale of a family living at the side of the world’s most unusual and dangerous lake; a Cape Cod pond of three disparate sections, one of which contains deadly beasts that prey upon any human or animal foolish enough to enter their domain - “The Brack”. The narrative starts peacefully in the 1950s with Cisco da Silva, captain of the last three masted schooner. He sails back and forth from New Bedford to the islands of Cape Verde, bravely battling the worst torments of the raging Atlantic Ocean. After a near fatal disastrous voyage he is forced into retirement on Cape Cod. That’s where his troubles really begin. His new life is at first peaceful and prosperous. A beautiful wife, a small lakeside cottage, a bit of land, and some cranberry bogs seem certain to portend an idyllic existence – but with the birth of his son – Jimmy Catfish, the amphibious boy - Cisco’s life becomes a nightmare. His skirmishes with the demons from the lake and the conflicts within his own mind lead him to a fiendish plot against his own son, who emerges as a leader of the scale-less beings that live under the surface of the lake. Jimmy Catfish is the story of a good man’s fight against the unfairness of life. It’s also the tale of an unfortunate boy, born deformed and ugly but with skills and abilities far above the reach of even the stoutest Olympians.

The protagonist, Francisco da Silva (aka Cisco), is a captain of a ship that's destined for adventure. Russo does an excellent job developing Cisco, making him seem like someone you know. One of my favorite things about the book is the amount of facts (history, geography, etc) Russo incorporates into the story. There are even "author's notes" with trivia type info that is incredibly fascinating. The plot of the book is paced well with a good balance between action and downtime for character development, setting the scene, etc. If you're a fan of adventure stories, you'll enjoy this read.

I’m a little partial to stories about New England and what I really like is how they always seem to have a little magic in them. The story flowed well from what seemed like a seafaring tale off the coast of Africa to the slice of life on the enchanted backwaters of Massachusetts. The characters were fascinating. I couldn’t stop wondering how their adventures would turn out nor how they would change as they settled into life on land. The dark twist was great storytelling.

There's action, happy times, tragedy, all mixed in with local color and even some real facts about the setting where the majority of the book takes place. It's paced well, keeping the reader interested and looking forward to the next thing to happen to the characters. It has a surprise ending, which I did not expect nor did I see it coming. Bill's books get better with each one he writes, and this is no exception.

Before we deal with the question of how to be filled with the Holy Spirit, there are some matters which first have to be settled. As believers you have to get them out of the way, and right here is where the difficulty arises. I have been afraid that my listeners might have gotten the idea somewhere that I had a how-to-be-filled-with-the-Spirit-in-five-easy-lessons doctrine, which I could give you. If you can have any such vague ideas as that, I can only stand before you and say, “I am sorry”; because it isn’t true; I can’t give you such a course. There are some things, I say, that you have to get out of the way, settled.

From the Back Cover

"Are you sure you want to be possessed by a spirit other than your own? Even though that spirit be the pure Spirit of God? Even though He be the very gentle essence of the gentle Jesus? Even though He be wisdom personified, wisdom Himself? Even though He be as loving as the heart of God?" —A. W. Tozer

This little book is hard to swallow. In it A. W. Tozer teaches plainly who the Spirit is, why we should desire Him, but why few of us do. He instructs us in how to be filled with the Spirit, but first poses this question: Do you really want to be filled?

It was "Conspiracy Theory" meets "All the President's Men." In reality was there a file? Is there a file? Wisely, the last chapter left a couple of items open-ended, leading me to believe there might be a follow-up story in the works. I hope I'm right.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Bull Hunter, easy does it By Twostory Max Brand writes great classic westerns and this is one of them. It's a tale of a big, strong but gentle man, Bull Hunter who means no harm. Bull learns life's lessons well as he travels away from his abusive relatives to enter the real world. Along the way he befriends a renowned gun fighter who takes him under his wing and trains him in the ways of a fast gun. Never losing his gentle manner and ways, Bull can't help but make new friends along his journey. But there are foes who want to end Bull's life. They find Bull a tough man to beat. The story glides along well with good characters and a sound connection between man and elements. This is one of the most enjoyable Max Brand tales I've read so far. Recommended, of course.
