“In today's wars, there are no morals. We believe the worst thieves in the world today, and the worst terrorists, are the Americans. We do not have to differentiate between military or civilian. As far as we are concerned, they are all targets.” -Osama bin Laden Sometime in the near future, a dying woman is discovered in New York City – infected with Smallpox. As the disease starts to spread, it is discovered that terrorists have unleashed a biological weapon on the American population – and brought the world to the brink of Armageddon. Against this backdrop, an extraordinary cast of men and women fight desperately for survival in a world gone mad. Doctor Nicolas Awad struggles desperately to contain and control the outbreak; President Paula Handley struggles to rally the shattered country for war and preserve something of the American way of life. On the streets of New York, Sergeant Al Hattlestad and the NYPD try to keep order and save as many as possible, while survivalist Jim Revells takes his family and tries to hide from the chaos. It made me want to update my smallpox vaccination and have my wife and kids (who live in Colorado) go get vaccinated as well. The proofreading was also much better than most of the ebooks I've read lately.Nutall may have never served, I haven't read his bio yet, but he seems to understand how we in the military and emergency services think. His assessment of the KSA (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia) is more fact than fiction. Seems like a guy I'd enjoy having a few beers with. Look me up if you're ever in Abu Dhabi.

Mr Nuttall has realized this horrific possibility into a well paced, passionate and grim look at a possible future. He takes the time to explore the ramifications on most scales (personal to global) while still retaining a good pace to keep the reader interested. As can be imagined of a disaster scenario of this type, the book is highly charged with politics, social issues and emotion. What the US would do in response to this type of attack, the different reactions of the US citizenry and the heartbreak of losing close friends and family are all explored. One of the more memorable characters is a well adjusted man at the start of the book and evolves over the course of events into an embittered broken husk. Mr. Nuttall's portrayal of the sequence of events to bring about this change is very bittersweet and oh so true. I was surprised by the twists and turns of this character's story and his emotional turmoil. At times I disagreed with some of the emotional turmoil and reactions, only to be surprised a little later at how well it fit into this particular storyline.Overall this book is a very worthwhile read. The detail is rich without overpowering the pacing of a good story. And for those who want a little less intellectual thought in reading a book can easily absorb and ignore/forget the more intricate details. I highly recommend this book.
5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Why You Should Be Afraid, Very Afraid. By N. Wishek Stories like Christopher Nuttall's, The Coward's Way of War, are downright frightening. Using a biological WMD has to be considered not only possible, but inevitably likely given our enemies ultimate objective. It this story it was a modified strain of smallpox. A disease labeled extinct in the wild, but one that is kept alive in various nations’ bio-weapons labs. It is also a disease that has historically devastated populations without any experience or immunity reserves,Be warned that this novel is NOT politically correct. The origin of the attack is the most likely in the real world, but will not meet the approval of those in power who would rather strip search an eighty year old grandmother or an eight year old crippled girl than stop a group of Arab looking men in their early twenties.Nuttall has proven himself an above average story teller yet again, but his basic knowledge of the science behind his plots makes this yet another must read novel.
