Biblical Preparedness without the Hype By William Struse If I had to sum up this book in just a few words I would have to say it is about stewardship - stewardship as individuals, families and church communities. So often the discussion of “preparedness” gets framed in terms of wild eye survivalists preparing for the end of the world. In this well written book the author Carl Gallups elevates the discussion and gives practical and commons sense advice on how Christians can fulfill their responsibilities to each other and their fellow man within a Biblical context of love.In this book you’ll find a wealth of practical information on preparedness with an underlying foundation based upon solid Biblical principles. I especially appreciate how Mr. Gallups reminded his readers throughout the book that real stewardship and preparedness begins in the heart and it is that focus which keeps physical preparedness in the proper balance.In the end, at least from my perspective, it’s about fulfilling the Royal Law to love our neighbor as ourselves. It is that principle reflected, in our actions towards each other, which should really drive our daily lives as believers. BE Thou Prepared is a practical primer on how to accomplish that in the day in which we live.

I usually get bored and sleepy reading books like this. I am about half way through and I can't put it down.It really has me doing a lot of thinking and giving me an entirely new perspective and out look. I feel as if the Holy Spirit is speaking to me. I am reading and learning from the book but at the same time realizing things that are not in the book.The book doesn't say this but one of the things I have realized is that from reading my Bible and KNOWING that hard times are coming and by preparing ahead for them I am showing my faith in God and his word. Instead of just thinking/saying, Oh well, God will handle it. I will just pray when it all hits the fan. By believing in the prophesies written about in the Bible and seeing the signs right before my eyes every day, and preparing I am showing that I do have faith. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE BOOK. Schmidtbauer The church I attend is currently going through some issues and we have hired security to watch over the situation. We also have people who conceal and carry. This has been controversial to some of the attendees, but in this day and age, I definitely understand why security is necessary. Every church should have a good gameplan for if an incident happens. As head usher, we are working with Security to understand each person's role during an incident. The statistics of terrorism of churches and church shootings were very eye-opening. As a Prepper, the information on how long to keep food and putting food in PET bottles was very informative. I have referred this book to our Security personnel at church.

He made it into a mystery and I being a mystery fan, just didn't want to put the book down. His writing was intense and very descriptive, I kept wondering how is this going to end.The ending definitely was from the "the outer limits."

From the start it was a book that grabbed my attention and then kept me asking questions. It was a page turner the entire read. I do hope that a second book comes out to let us know what happens with all the characters.

He has seen a lot of miracles all over the world including third world countries. He tells of his first hand dealings with near death and those who had died and came back to tell their stories. This is a book about Dr. Crandall's journey and personal glimpses of eternity as well as his journey of going from what he could see to the faith it took to see beyond the natural. The doctor was not always a believer in these deep amazing miracles. You will also follow his journey to the believer he is today and how he arrived. It is a wonderful book and a real eye opener.

By Karen Wiser Touching Heaven by Dr. Chauncey Crandall is a very unique and thought provoking book.Touching Heaven by Dr. Chauncey Crandall piqued my interest for many reasons. At the top of my list is that the author is a cardiologist. Dr. Crandall’s experience and background in medicine is impressive. The book states that, “He is chief of the cardiovascular transplant program at the Palm Beach Cardiovascular Clinic in Palm Beach Gardens and is on staff at three medical centers.” Having worked for fifteen years as an RN, CCRN in a Cardiac Intensive Care Unit myself, I am always drawn to the medical story, especially acute cardiac related events. There are manydetailed stories within the book that chronicle the resuscitation procedures given to a dying patient. I was quickly immersed in the bedside care and high level of energy that fuels these life retrieving protocols. One particular narrative Dr. Crandall shares, where by the defibrillator did not fire when discharged, had me on the edge of my seat. That is a nightmare scenario for a code blue team. A close second on my list for reading this book is the idea that Touching Heaven intersects faith with facts. The collision of spiritual and physicalwill always make for an interesting read. I am a very logical, formulaic, algorithm sort of gal, so when I have an opportunity to be stretched outside of my comfort zone to a place that is intangible, I will never turn that opportunity down.Finally, I was drawn to this book simply because the author is courageously discussing heaven within the context of his personal experiences and observations. Given today’s culture, I feel this is a brave thing to do. I have much admiration for anyone who will take a stand on their convictionswith such passion and unwavering resolve. I wanted to digest an evangelical physician’s perspective on healing, heaven, and our earthly purpose. I was not disappointed.Touching Heaven is a very personal story of life events in the author’s life. Dr. Crandall’s desire to share the importance of inviting Christ into every situation could not be missed. He effectively communicates the message that we do not need to wait to “go to heaven”, but rather the kingdom of God is wherever believers call upon the name of Christ. One of the most powerful statements in the book encompasses this idea. Dr. Crandall writes, “As we take up our spiritual authority, the situation we’re in switches from defeat and darkness and death to victory and light and life. By Leon Calafiore The early blurbs published on Avalonia’s website had me chomping at the bit to get my hands on a copy as quickly as possible. Even my postal delivery driver was aware I desperately craved this volume. And after it arrived, it did not disappoint. Whether you work in a Northern magical tradition or not, by all means add a copy to your shelves. Christopher Alan Smith has an incredible grasp of this Icelandic material, and is one of those rare writers who can be both lucid and comprehensive at the same time. Large quantities of extant primary sources are expertly synthesized within a satisfying overview of Icelandic society at the time these texts were written. Whatever your magical path, you will find this a treasure (with the promise of more to come).

Discovered late, it wasn’t effectively colonized till the end of the 9th century. As the author, Christopher Alan Smith, vividly describes, “A sub-arctic island, oft-times battered by the cold waves of the North Atlantic Ocean and storms from the polar region, it is a land of glaciers and volcanoes where the primal forces of fire and ice compete to increase the hardship of the small population. Summers are brief and winters long, while spring and autumn struggle to find any place at all among the seasons. Arable land is hard to find, and even good grazing is at a premium. The earth itself shakes and rumbles from time to time. It is a land of liminality, where the world of men is squeezed and constricted between vast and hostile forces.” A barren place where bad weather beat the land, keeping men so impoverished that they once collected wood for building their homes along the seashore and then constructed these houses with tools —which were considered to be luxury items back then. Yet this unyielding and isolated environment helped to promote an equally unyielding culture of vibrant traditional magic. A tradition, which has endured to this very day, despite climate, scarcity of farm land, Catholic Inquisitions and Protestant persecutions. Cut off and largely forgotten by mainland Europe, the Icelandic people have been able to maintain their native tongue so that a 13th century texts still can be understood and easily read. Their genome, like their language, stretches back through the centuries unadulterated, and is one of the purest to be found. Many Icelanders can refer to their family tree and take note of ancestors that go back as far as their language and localized DNA. So, it is no great surprise that the people of Iceland have held on to their magical practices as well. These practices were preserved within ancient grimoires (magical texts), which were often hidden. Grimories are the rich base, which Mr. Smith taps into for the purposes of his book. With exceptional skill and understanding he delineates the use of spells, runes, charms and incantation, explaining the importance of the words and objects being used and how they relate to the people and times that they were employed in. If you interested in how magic was performed in the past, this is the book for you.

By S McDermott Before I read this book I confess to knowing very little about Iceland, Icelanders and nothing of their magic. With his clear and uncomplicated writing on what could be perceived as a very complex subject, the author has skilfully created a very interesting, informative and incredibly easy read. He gives a fascinating insight to the life, culture, geography and of course the magic, from the Middle Ages through to the early modern period on this sub-Arctic land. I can fully understand why Icelanders resorted to magic as a crutch to help them survive in their relentless battle against the elements, eking a living from the very limited fertile land and the seas. There are a few hilariously funny moments where, as the saying goes, I laughed my socks off. After reading this book I shall now be a little more wary with whom I shake hands and keep a watchful eye on my bedpost! I highly recommend this book.

Outside these walls were drones set to contain them, but James was going to have to save the world. He had to so he could save his brother.

Follow the story of James, a young man with Asperger's syndrome, as he and others with Asperger's have been confined to a concentration camp by the government. After the revelation was made that everyone on the Autism Spectrum was descended from aliens, a mass panic ensued. Not understanding what this information meant for those not on the spectrum, the government acted rashly and, in an attempt to control all those with Asperger's, confined them all together. But what the government doesn't know, what James does, is that Earth is about to be invaded by the Nequitians, who have obtained James' brother's DNA. If James doesn't escape, doesn't save his brother, the whole of Earth and all humanity will be doomed. I loved this book. LOVED it! This is a book for anyone who loves a great sci-fi read, but for anyone who either has Asperger's syndrome or who has a family member or friend who does, this book is that much greater. Author Roy Dias has done a truly masterful job in writing a book with unconventional heroes that the reader will come to root for, care about, and continue to think about long after the book is done. I was not surprised at all to find out that author Dias has Asperger's syndrome, as well as children with Asperger's. I don't think this book could be written as authentically by someone without his very unique perspective. About the Author Roy Dias was born in Vancouver Canada, where he lived until he was fifteen. He then moved to Portugal where he completed a degree in Polymer Engineering. He is currently a franchisee of Wall Street English, a school that teaches English as a second language. He lives in Vila Verde Portugal, with his wife, two ‘Aspean’ kids, a dog, three birds, some fish, and four lazy cats that seem to think they own the place. Like his two sons, he also has Asperger’s syndrome.

The story itself is LIGHT and PLAUSIBLE fantasy, with much education thrown in in very light-hearted and/or heart wrenching scenes superbly done by the author.Aspergers Syndrome is little understood by the general public but Mr. Dias has done a superb job of education without pontificating. Watch especially for the scene where "The Misfits" tell each other of their most glaring social blunders and laugh or cry with them.Acceptance and respect is all that the heroes of this novel ask - all that anyone really wants. Well done, Roy Dias.

EPISODE 1 - Whatever It Takes

But first, he must qualify by demonstrating a new, state of the art technology - implanted in his own body. EPISODE 2 - Ultimate Endurance

Extreme times call for extreme measures. Only 48 of the 1,000 entrants will be allowed to move forward into the Tech Games as a contestant. Becoming a contestant is Roland’s only chance to get close enough to the Pinnacle Corporation to uncover the evidence needed to clear his father’s name and save him from death by incineration. Roland has trained hard, but will it be enough? His resolve to become a Tech Games contestant is tested over a double marathon of the 5 most difficult terrains known to man. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Very nice, but sketchy By Shimon I hesitate between 3 and 4 stars (but not 5!) The story is amazing, very well planned and written and very enjoyable to read. However, I does leave impression that author was in rush to write it down. It's like a scenario or a script when all subtle details are left out and only main line remained. And for the lack of details and the rush I dropped 2 stars. This story, however, would make a hit movie in theaters :) I hope somebody will film it one day.

By MoJo This author has some great stories.I originally downloaded the first in the series for free and read it cover to cover in a day because it was impossible to put down. He is a good writer with pretty good proofing and editing (which is rare with free copies). I enjoyed the first book so much, I immediately purchased the collection and then the 4th one (reviewed also) after I finished all these.I won't give any spoilers, but it is a science fiction futuristic story with a little bit of a Hunger Games theme, but with willing contestants that have modifications to their bodies that make them extraordinary examples of humans/android/biotechnology additions. The characters are likable and you end up rooting for the underdog, but even like the entertainment of the "bad guys" of the story.I highly recommend and will follow other works by this author.

By Soccermom A great new take on lectio divina and Ignatian Spirituality by "the pope's prayer group." All of the elements are in the same location each day. The paper is high quality and won't bleed through if you want to highlight in it. And it's a full year of daily readings and reflections. What more can you ask for?

This ancient spiritual practice seems simple but yet complex and hard to begin. I love Sacred Reading because it takes you by the hand and walks you through the process. The steps are 1) Knowing that God is present, 2) Read the Gospel reading for the day, 3) Notice what you think or feel, 4) Pray as you are led, 5) Listen to Jesus, and 6) Ask God to show you how to live today. Starting with Advent 2015, the beginning of the Catholic Church year, the gospel readings are included for each day following the church year calendar. The Saints for each day are included as well.The Apostleship of Prayer is an international Jesuit prayer ministry. They have a popular website Apostleshipof Prayer.org. Their organization has put together this different type of prayer book. Just as important as the content is what is not written within the pages, your prayers, thoughts and hopes. What we bring to the book, the more we can reap from the instruction in Lectio Divina. I truly believe that after using this book for a year, I will have evolved in my knowledge and practice of this ancient prayer practice. "As we open our hearts to Jesus, he opens his heart to us."Each day offers a brief opening prayer, the Gospel reading for the day, and a guide for prayer. One might also wish to keep a spiritual journal of reflections.This is a wonderful devotional guide, designed to be used daily. Good Introduction to a central practice of the church By Adam Shields NT Wright is not only an increadibly prolific writer, he also seems to be continually updating his earlier books.The Meal Jesus Gave Us was originally published in 2002 and was revised this summer.Wright is known for his academic publishing, but this is one of his books that is oriented toward the non-professional. If anything this might have been over simplified. This new version is slightly edited and has added discussion questions. It would make a decent study for an adult confirmation class or a small group.The book opens with a short introduction imagining what a birthday party might look like to a martian unfamiliar with human rituals. After a brief discussion of human rituals conveying meaning, Wright spends a couple of chapters imagining what a disciple at the Last Supper and then an early Christian would think about communion.The second section (the last short 9 chapters) attempts to put some theological meat on the previous imaginings. Because it is Wright, communion is placed in context of early Jewish thought, the kingdom of God, the eschatalogical vision of Christianity (end times), how communion reflects Jesus death and resurrection and more.Along the way Wright briefly explores the ways that different streams of Christianity view communion, he explores the different names that it is given, and some of the church history and theological issues.The final chapter explores some of the practical theology that goes along with communion. How often should it be taken, who should take it, who should officiate, etc.NT Wright, when this was first written was an Anglican Bishop and this book follows Anglican theology, although non-Anglicans should not be afraid to read it.It is very brief, only about 95 pages of main content and I read it without any problem in an evening. It raises lots of good questions and does a good job presenting the importance of communion to the church theologically, practically and ritually.I do think that in the end, I expected a bit more meat to the book. It is definately an introduction and I think it makes a very good introduction. He does a good job presenting some of the controversial issues in a non-controversial way. It is clear that he believes that communion is very important and along with the Word (preaching and scripture reading) is central to Christian worship.For less than 100 pages of content I am not sure what else needed to be added as central. But I am again amazed at Wright’s ability to write to a wide variety of audiences well.

Wright lays a solid foundation for understanding, leading,and participating in this essential act of worship. It is short but complete, readable but also profound. It would be an excellent resource for new pastors and new members of any church.

Wright so ably does he draws the reader into a topic in which there is some varied interpretation. This is a good primer.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. 3...2...1...GO! By Tony Healey I should say first of all that I was allowed to read an advance copy of Grendel Unit 2 prior to publication. I should also admit that I am completely biased when it comes to the series, since I collaborated with Schaffer on a crossover between our two fictional universes last year.That said, I am an honest person. I wouldn't mislead you into buying something I thought was terrible.Which is good, because Grendel Unit 2 - Ignition Sequence is awesome.Picking up where the first instalment left off, we learn more about what Frank has planned in terms of helping his good friend Vic. We also get to see how Frank ended up joining Grendel Unit in the first place. I didn't expect this aspect to the story. I thought it would be a straight-forward continuation. But Schaffer elegantly takes us back several years, and it's a masterstroke how he ties all this in with the continuing storyline. Well played, Bernard.Ignition Sequence takes an unlikable character - naming no names here to leave this review as spoiler free as possible - turns them over and shows us their other side. It reminds me of something Stephen King said in the afterword to The Colorado Kid about showing the truth in a story. Not one to write one-dimensional characters, Schaffer expertly shows us how even a brat of a character has another side, another aspect.There was a wonderful chapter partway through that was almost golden age scifi. It would have made Grandmaster Clarke proud.It all ends on a real mother of a cliffhanger. I know I will now be emailing Bernard, asking when Grendel Unit 3 will be done. I suggest you all do the same. In fact, I don't need to tell you that. Once you read Ignition Sequence, it'll be the first thing on your mind.

By alon By that I mean that while these shorts are excellent, fast-paced, and insanely fun reads I would like to see Schaffer develop Grendel Unit into a series of full length novels so that these interesting characters can be further explored and the story be a little more involved. While the shorts are fun, I think this type of story would benefit from a longer format and be something more like a Human Chronicles (at least part 2) or Omega Force type series. That's not to say there is anything wrong with the story as it exists, it's still easily a 5-star read and well worth your time.

It provides some needed background for the characters and sets the scene for a couple of ways to go in future episodes. I am a regular reader of Mr. Schaffer and while I enjoy most of his efforts, I like his science fiction efforts the best. I will be looking forward to learning more about these characters and how their story lines play out.

By Mathlete ** ABSOLUTELY NO SPOILERS AHEAD **I was a big fan of the first two novels in this series, A Discovery of Witches: A Novel (All Souls Trilogy) and Shadow of Night (All Souls Trilogy) and waited with exciting anticipation for The Book of Life: A Novel (All Souls Trilogy) to be released. I was fortunate enough to receive an advanced readers copy from the publisher last week and was not disappointed.I'm not going to rehash the publisher's summary by restating the plot of Book of life, but believe me - the journey Deborah Harkness takes us with Diana and Matthew is wholly amazing. Their search for Ashmole 782 and its missing pages becomes tantamount into understanding what the witches have known for centuries and how to save their future. Although it has been two years since Shadow of Night (All Souls Trilogy) was released, you will find it very easy to get back into Matthew and Diana's storyline. And seeing how things are settled with Benjamin was definitely worth the wait. There was plenty of action and suspense to keep you turning the pages.For all of us who were disappointed in how Veroicia Roth ended the Divergent series with Allegiant (Divergent Series) last year have no fear with Deborah Harkness - she does an amazing job concluding the All Souls trilogy.This was a wonderful end to the series. It's a little sad to have waited two years for the conclusion and after a week of reading, having to say goodbye to the characters of this amazing trilogy. I thought Deborah Harkness did a wonderful job wrapping everything the plot without being predictable or leaving gaping plot holes.The Book of Life is all that I hoped it would be. It was hard to put down and I believe fans will not feel the same letdown felt with the Divergent trilogy. I fully recommend it as a quick read. It took me a week during my daily commute to work and a few hours before going to bed to get through the 576 pages. Definitely worth the wait.

I'm talking EPIC proportion let down.First of all, I am shocked at all the positive reviews I'm seeing. I feel like we didn't read the same book.A Discovery of Witches was one of my favorite reads of 2011. I wasn't as much into reading then, and I stumbled across this one while randomly perusing my library for books. I fell in love with the story, the characters, and the magic of it all. I felt like the story was building up for something important, something powerful.The second book was also pretty successful for me. It was lovely in the way that historical fiction is pleasurable for me. I also have a deep love of time-travel books, so I was practically guaranteed to fall head over heels.A lot of time has passed since the second, and my expectations were sky high for the third. Unfortunately, the careful world-building fell to crap in the final installment. I'll try to break down my main issues with the story without giving away any spoilers.1) The POV switches: I have very specific opinions about lots of POVs in the a story: Namely, I hate them. This book had at least 5 different points of view, which irritated me to no end. Why not just two? Those extra points of view just seemed lazy to me, just a way for the author to do some "telling" and less "showing" about the characters. To make matters worse, the author switched from 1st to 3rd person throughout the book! Talk about a headache. It was a terrible choice, in my opinion.2) The number of characters: This book was like a who's who from the previous two books. I swear, no one was left out. There were so many people re-introduced that I had a hard time keeping track of everyone. The story felt so... cluttered. All of these extra people and their minor storylines weighed the plot down so much. It became sort of jumbled and confusing. I'm not sure why the author didn't just keep her focus on the main characters.3) The lack of secrecy: I'm so confused! In the previous books, Diana and Matthew guarded the secret of their relationship, the quest for the book, and the secrets of Matthew's family fiercely. In this book? They let it alllll hang out. They tell everyone EVERYTHING! Everyone seems to know what they are searching for, that Diana is pregnant, simply everything! I have no idea why this had them throwing caution to the wind. They freaking told an entire class of students what they were researching. It was madness. Then they are looking for the person "leaking their secrets"... it could be the pizza boy for all they know! It was truly bizarre.4) Diana's familiar: I won't say too much about this topic so I don't give away any spoilers, but I was utterly confused about the change in the firedrake's personality throughout the story, especially towards the end.5) The haphazard plot: It honestly felt like the author didn't think this trilogy through very well. It was like the author had a brilliant idea for the first book and then had no idea how to carry it through. The third book had to reveal some mind blowing things to fit with all the buildup, but instead it was a collection of jumbled tangents. The main characters jumped from location to location, doing a series of things that didn't really make sense. They seemed like chickens with their heads cut off. The book didn't seemed planned. It was almost as though the author was making it up on the fly.6) The blood rage thing: I hated this plot point. Blood rage was supposed to be this crazy thing, but some deep breathing and zen meditation seemed to snap all the characters out of it?? I was so confused as to why it was this big issue to begin with if it was that easy to control. I would have preferred it be a mindless, insane thing instead of the nuisance it was made out to be. It was a poorly fleshed out concept that could have been more powerful.7) The Book: Okay, what is the deal with that book? We never truly get answers. I still am left wondering who created it and why. If you are reading this story thinking that something wondrous will be revealed, don't hold your breath.8) Plot inconsistencies: There are so many plot elements that make no sense or are left dangling. I don't want to go into them all because I want this review to be spoiler free, but there were many instances where the book contradicts itself.All in all, this book was a huge bummer. I give it 2 stars, mainly for nostalgia because I was happy to visit with these characters again.Oh, and can Gallowglass get his own book? THE DEATH OF PLOTTING and CARELESS TREATMENT OF MAJOR CHARACTERS ENDS THE BOOK OF LIFE By Boni M I loved DISCOVERY OF WITCHES, and I eagerly downloaded SHADOW OF NIGHT at the stroke of midnight on the day of its release. But I was disappointed at the plot disintegration, the puzzling and ill-advised tangents of the main characters, and the introduction of jarring multiple POVs. Matthew's character, once so edgy and alpha, became less Heathcliff and more unformed and unsexy. I guess the “SHADOW” was a foreshadowing of what would be in store for readers of THE BOOK OF LIFE. While SHADOW was truly a shadow to its predecessor, DISCOVERY OF WITCHES, I was unprepared for the terrible disappointment I experienced with THE BOOK OF LIFE. Here are just a few of the reasons:1. In the original book, there's an edgy, sexy, dynamic tension between Diana and Matthew, whereas in the final book, those “vibes” are almost non-existent.2. Matthew is no longer an alpha Heathcliff with a scary, but brilliant take on life, but a clueless, blundering dolt. The lack of dynamic tension between the couple demolishes what was once the sweet underlying “forbidden love conquers all” storyline that had been so cleverly woven around interesting historical and academic facts and ideas.3. Important characters who, in the first book, had hinted at a more important and pivotal role in the future, disappeared or were seen merely blinking in the dim light at the fringes.4. Certain characters that appeared for the first time in BOL seemed to be terribly contrived and PC.5. It was a crime that the character of Baldwin was short shrifted. The author could have done a lot with him. It was also disappointing that the readers aren't allowed to see Peter Knox and Gerbert get their just desserts.6. Most of the main characters first introduced in the DISCOVERY lost their significance.7. Phillip's importance fizzles. His character's integrity is also undermined without reason. The promise that Diana made to be with him during his torture in SHADOW went nowhere in BOL.8. The ghosts who appeared in and out of scenes in DISCOVERY were somewhere else. Well, two of them seemed to hang around, but served no purpose. What happens in the last chapter is much too little, far too late.9. The plot was riddled with countless logic problems. This problem proved to be so huge, that I doubt I'll ever re-read the book.10. The whole big build up of ASHMOLE 782 died with a whimper. It made so little sense. It's also suspiciously like Karen Marie Moning's SHADOWFEVER where Mac becomes the book. While it worked for that character and the Fever series, it does NOT working in BOL.11. The multiple POVs were distracting and disruptive.12. It's a crime that this exciting, familiar but different story was so poorly tended.Outside of my personal disappointment in one of the few books that I've ever marked on my calendar to download as soon as it became available, is my bewilderment regarding the many glowing reviews it has garnered. I'm perplexed by the many glowing reviews in major papers. The terrible plotting, the amateurish multiple POVs, the unravelling of the main characters, the pointless digressions and tangents taken—don't seem to have been noted. Is this yet another case of the Emperor's New Clothes? None of the reviewers want to take issue with a money-maker series with a large fan base? Hmmm. That doesn't seem to be enough of an answer even if it's true.Here's what I hope: I hope a fan will write a better ending to this series.
