We have focused too long on why they leave - finally a resource we can use to help close to proverbial back door and with God's help - give them guidance to stay.

By Thomas Law As the church in the western world continues to decline hundreds, if not thousands, of research studies have been developed to analyze why “the next generation” is not staying in the church. This has caused church leaders around the country to implement programs in order to retain or re-engage these young people. In consulting with churches I have often told them that people want something toward which they can go, something which draws them rather than something from which they are “running”. The authors have done a masterful job of developing a research tool which focuses on those aspects of family and church life which have the possibility of retaining young people as activate contributing members of the church community into adulthood. Parr and Crites have identified fifteen areas that make a difference. Finally, we have something positive which we can do in order to help families, churches, and church leaders create an environment which may lead to more young people staying connected to the local congregation.
