About the Author Stephen Ingram has been working in youth ministry since 1998 and currently is the Director of Student Ministries at Canterbury United Methodist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, where he has served since 2008. He has worked as a conference speaker, consultant and advisor in both the PC(USA) and Methodist denominations. Stephen has a B.A. from Samford University in Religion and New Testament and a Masters of Divinity from Mercer University's McAfee School of Theology with a concentration in Theology. He is also a Lead Consultant with the consulting firm Ministry Architects. He is the author of Hollow Faith: How Andy Griffith, Facebook and the American Dream Neutered the Gospel and the student devotional (Extra)Ordinary: 365 Ordinary Moments with an Anything But Ordinary God. In his free time Stephen loves to cook, watch Alabama football and the Atlanta Braves. The real loves of his life are his wife Mary Liz and their three young children.

In my Top Ten By Doug Ranck Full disclosure #1: When I started in youth ministry the author had not been born, there were two books on the subject of youth ministry and I had both of them.Full disclosure #2: Thirty-six years later I’m still in full-time youth ministry, I still love teenagers and their families.Full disclosure #3: I wish I had this book in my early years of ministry but I’m happy to have it now.When someone writes from his or her passion, it shows. Stephen Ingram loves youth ministry and he is a self-proclaimed foodie. He admits to the joy of cooking and penchant for Food channel shows. With those ingredients combined, vigorously stirred, baked for a long time and served hot we have a tasty, nutritious offering on the table. Sit down, savor it and enjoy it – yes, I’m now done with the cooking metaphor!The title of Ingram’s introduction “The Crisis of Fast Food Ministry” pulls the reader in quickly to the core of the thesis. In these times we very well understand the difference between pre-packaged and homegrown food.Throughout the book the author skillfully ties in his experience, his value of strategic structures, his love for God’s people and the organic food metaphor all displaying a systemic approach toward offering a healthy and sustainable ministry to youth and their families.Some of the highlights for me were: following the cue of St. Patrick in his response to people, the value of longevity as a necessity, sorting out “wildflowers” from “weeds,” the role of the PR game and leaving “Miracle Grow” on the shelf. There is much more I could add but I will leave that for you to discover.Appropriately Mr. Ingram ends the book by calling the reader to Godly and holistic character as shepherds in our leadership. The health and sustainability of our ministry begins in our personal relationship with God followed by our relationship with family or significant friends outside the ministry. From the overflow of these relationships comes our most effective ministry. In this chapter the author closes the loop on what it means to let the youth ministry reflect our love for God, love for our youth/families, love for ourselves and continuing to work rich soil we are granted through faithfulness in our lives.At this point in life I have many books in my office. I would go back in time and do two things... 1.) Buy stock in Apple and 2.) Give myself a copy of this book.If I had read Organic Student Ministry as a 19 year old bright eyed intern or as a 21 year old slightly (or completely) overwhelmed and goateed youth minister, Not only would I have been able to do ministry from a much healthier place, but, I could have saved myself so many struggles and much grief (i.e. hair loss) as a young youth worker.Having said that, I have been in youth ministry for 10+ years and this book has helped me to reconsider the ways and places I do youth ministry from in my life. I have read so many books on youth ministry and there are typically two kinds of books when it comes to student ministry... ones that speak into the practical "how- to" items of youth ministry and ones that speak into the whys or the heart of youth ministry and working in a healthy way. Organic Student Ministry does both. Stephen does a great job of blending practical advice on youth ministry and how to avoid the common pitfalls of all the interpersonal relationships you'll have in church work while also speaking right into the heart and encouraging you to do a check up on your own soul as a youth worker.This book is NOT a "Twenty five tips to grow your youth ministry by 50% in the next three months" or a one size fits all fix for your ministry. In fact, it's quite the opposite and much deeper. This book speaks less into the "magic bullet" approach to reaching students and keeping them in the four walls of the church and more into a holistic way of doing youth ministry.Buy this book if you are tired of doing youth ministry the same old way and expecting new results.Buy this book if you are brand new to youth ministry and terrified.Buy this book if you're tired of the constant power struggles and interpersonal drama with parents,volunteers or staff. (i.e. adults! Who knew that so much of youth ministry was dealing with adults?!)Buy this book if you're the old pro who is on year 10 at the same church (Congrats!) or the youth minister who is on church #4 in the last five years and are tired of hearing how great the guy before you was.Buy this book if you're a broke intern. Get Schooled on Youth Ministry By Johnathan & Priscilla Whether you are new to youth ministry or veteran in youth ministry this book will prove to be a valuable resource. What I appreciate most about this book is that it is not a top ten list, 3 quick steps, or the next new fad. While this book is packed with thoughtful helps and recommendations for navigating what I consider some of the most common situations, dilemmas, challenges, and decisions those leading youth ministries face, it is done so with applicable story, context, and in a way that brings depth and credibility to those recommendations. You are immediately struck by the authors breadth of experience and wisdom as you read this book.From this day forward as I engage, encourage, and counsel youth workers as they navigate ministry, when posed with a question, my first thought will be "Did Organic Student Ministry Address this issue?" and point them to read that section of this book.In our fast-pace, at your fingertips, instant, society, you are encouraged to be prayerful, discerning, watchful, listener, and observer. As the author put it "The only way you can help lead a student ministry toward and into fruitful ministry is to help it grow where it is planted.
