It would have looked like a typical American home, except for the bars on the windows, the aluminum foil wrapped around the roof, and the sign on the lawn that read ‘Beware of Aliens’. This they were used to; it was an assignment they could handle efficiently as Disseminators of Misinformation. But when Seven Banks and his fellow DOM operative arrive in Nebraska to discredit a typical alien sighting, they find themselves thrust into the wrathful path of cannibalistic creatures highly skilled in guerrilla warfare. A hostage situation soon ends in a race against time to stop bloodthirsty creatures determined to hunt down and kill fugitive enemies—a band of mercenaries led by the only man who can exterminate the spawn of a demigod.

He's clever, spiritual, but most of all I appreciate the messages and practical tips of how to better love your siblings, neighbors and strangers. One downside is that we had already purchased one of these separately, but I wish I had just found out about this first and avoided the double purchase. Anyhow, I highly recommend this set.

And I don't have teenagers just yet, but I have several in training. My mother-in-law was the one who introduced our family to Hank Smith about a year ago. We brought the CD she had given us on a family trip, and when we listened to it, we were hooked. We loved his humor, and how he taught gospel messages and truths! The advice he gives is timely to anyone and everyone. My kids loved it so much we listened to it several times on the trip, and bought more for the way home. Now any time we are in the car, even around town running errands, my kids request Hank Smith. I highly recommend Hank Smith's CDs, they are fun and lively and incredibly inspiring!

Even thirty years after Sherman's March decimated thecommunity of Scots Bend, it still impacts the daily lives of the people livingthere. Even more than destroying the economy, the March and the Reconstructionthat followed destroyed the laws and often the morals that provided structureto the community, and protection for the people struggling to rebuild theirlives. Against that backdrop, two families feud for power anddominance. One family, the Greers, made a devil's deal with the Yankee occupiersto protect their wealth and property. The other, the Casons, proudly fought aguerilla campaign against the carpetbaggers and when they left, continued theirfeud against the Greers and their minions. Told in first person narratives of the characters involved, the feud culminates in the brutal last legal hanging in Scots Bend. Theinternal conflicts of the characters are just as intense as the externalconflicts of their struggles to survive and to win the battles against theirenemies. THE LAST HANGING IN SCOTS BEND opens with an incredibly evocative scene. Leland "Big Lee" Cason visits his family's cemetery plots. As he talks to members of his family, he reflects on the events of 1898. Before leaving the cemetery, Big Lee marks his own tombstone with tomorrow's date. From that powerful opening, the story flashes back to 1898. John Brooks "Stash" Harris awaits sentencing for the murder of two men. His uncle, Big Lee, is sheriff and has to balance his duty to the community and to his kin. Their rivals, the Greers, gleefully await Stash's sentencing and celebrate the verdict, death by hanging. The small town of Scots Bend staggers as all affected reflect, remembering the events leading up to Stash's crime, the potential aftermath, and their own contributions. From the powerful opening to the explosive ending, THE LAST HANGING IN SCOTS BEND is an incredible read. The story is told through the memories and recollections of a small pocket of humanity struggling to find peace in the aftermath of a war that nearly tore the nation in two. The two families, not content to merely exist, feud proudly. The Casons and the Greers are not the only families in the community of Scots Bend, but they might as well be. Every event revolves around something the Casons did in response to an act the Greers inflicted upon them and vice versa. As the reader is thrust into this hectic world, they become like Stash haunted by the upcoming hanging and the events leading up to his rash actions. Rotating chapters focus on an important character which grants insight into the current events and Stash's character. These chapters read at times like inner monologues and others like journal entries, which work to draw the reader in. The characters are distinct and well-rounded with captivating writing. All of which combines in a contemplative look at faith, honor, family, and man's place in a world shattered by war as it attempts to rebuild. THE LAST HANGING IN SCOTS BEND highlights a captivating examination of human nature in a time of upheaval.

The Last Hanging in Scots Bend, by Jack Hammond Jr.

Review Five Stars from Dr. Ed HuffstetlerThe Last Hanging in Scots Bend is an excellent read, and stands among the very best Southern literature has to offer. Here you really get a full sense of the Southern sensibility, the underlying value system that motivates the characters in ways that are sometimes surprising. I think Hammond brings a level of authenticity to the story that makes it all the more compelling. And the writing itself is wonderful--good crisp prose, sharp imagery, and an excellent sense of pacing. This is an author who understands how to tell a story.

From the Author The Last Hanging in Scots Bend weaves authentic history and apocryphal stories of Sherman's March and the Reconstruction into a tale of a community's struggle to rebuild after the devastation of the Civil War. Inside that tale are the first person accounts of the characters in the story locked in a bitter generational feud. At the same time, the first person narratives give the reader a window into the hard internal conflicts each character faces. Men and women often struggle with questions about their place in the natural world and God, and the first person narrative reveals these conflicts in ways that we all understand.

About the Author Jack Hammond Jr. is a lifelong resident of South Carolina, growing up during the Cold War and the Civil Rights era. He holds a BA in English from Coker College and an MBA from Wingate University. After a long career managing municipal and county utilities, a Board of Directors mercifully put him out of his misery when they fired him. He began teaching high school English. Along with teaching, Mr. Hammond became a head track coach and an assistant football coach, winning three consecutive state championships in football. Teaching reignited his love for literature and writing. The Last Hanging in Scots Bend is his first novel. It draws historical images and individuals from the Reconstruction era into the intensely personal drama of two families locked in a bitter generational conflict. It is an examination of man's place in the natural world, the randomness of fate, and man's relationship to God. Mr. Hammond is currently working on a second novel, Never Enough Words, set during the Civil Rights era in Scots Bend, South Carolina.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Revenge and Theosophy By Steven K. Puterbaugh The framework of the novel is a story of murder and revenge worthy of the Elizabethan stage. The setting is a rural South Carolina community that had yet to fully recover from the devastation and social disruption left in the wake of Sherman’s march to the sea. The main action takes place in 1898, but the narrative takes frequent trips back to the horrors of the Civil War and to the injustices and resentments of the Reconstruction period.Except for the prologue and epilogue, the novel consists of a series of monologues in which the story unfolds through the spoken words and perspectives of its strongly drawn main characters. The action of the story is gripping, and the observations and musings of the characters give the reader a clear and vivid impression of time, place, and the activities and pace of daily life. The novel also provides insight and sympathetic understanding of the difficulties and economic challenges faced by Southerners in the aftermath of the Civil War.The language the author gives to the characters seems authentic to its time, and is often graced with lyrical cadences and earthy, colorful imagery. The natural world has a powerful, immediate presence in the minds and words of its characters – which seems fitting for a time when rural transportation and cultivation of the land depended on horses, mules and human physical effort.I found a strong philosophical undercurrent in the novel, based on an abiding question of theosophy: how can God’s goodness be reconciled with the flourishing existence of evil in our world? There are a number of points in the novel when some of the characters are drawn to this mystery and delve into its nooks and crannies using plain language and concepts rooted in practical experience. The novel, through its characters’ words, also aims a few sharp elbows at hypocritical church-goers, who are referred to as “just in case” Christians.Last Hanging provides a good read on a number of levels. It is packed with intense and suspenseful action. It takes the reader back to a different time and imparts vivid impressions of daily life in that time. It looks at Civil War and Reconstruction events and experiences from the perspective of ordinary Southern folks. And, finally, it provides intelligent discourse on important philosophical and religious issues.

I loved the historical significance of the South and how it influenced the lives of the characters. I found myself at times close to tears and at other times in a near fit of rage. The characters drew me in and kept me engaged until the last word.

Organic Student Ministry: Trash the Pre-Packaged Programs and Transform Your Youth Group, by Stephen L. Ingram Jr.

Review The keen mind of Stephen Ingram permeates throughout this book. Organic Student Ministry is chockfull of smart, savvy youth ministry wisdom. You won't find quick, shot-in-the-arm fixes for programming. Instead, you should read each chapter like its a treasure chest: with a yellow highlighter ready to put each gem into pragmatic practice. --Stephanie Caro, Author, Speaker, and Senior Consultant for Ministry ArchitectsBehind the scenes, a new generation of youth workers has been quietly learning, thinking, growing. They're not just trying to keep kids in the church. They're trying to form followers of Christ who will be leaders in the church of tomorrow. Stephen Ingram is one of the architects of this new approach to youth ministry, and I'm grateful for his example and voice. --Brian McLaren, Author and ActivistYouth ministry will only be effective in our post-Christendom culture if it is contextual. Cookie cutter ministry models no longer work—if they ever did. Rooted in years of experience as a youth worker and consultant, Stephen Ingram has assembled a collection of best practices and attitude adjustments that will nurture relational and adaptive youth ministry in whatever context you serve. If you want to cultivate a dynamic and holistic ministry with young people and adults, this book is for you. --John W. Vest, visiting Assistant Professor of Evangelism at Union Presbyterian Seminary, Cofounder of the Progressive Youth Ministry Conference

In my Top Ten By Doug Ranck Full disclosure #1: When I started in youth ministry the author had not been born, there were two books on the subject of youth ministry and I had both of them.Full disclosure #2: Thirty-six years later I’m still in full-time youth ministry, I still love teenagers and their families.Full disclosure #3: I wish I had this book in my early years of ministry but I’m happy to have it now. When someone writes from his or her passion, it shows. Stephen Ingram loves youth ministry and he is a self-proclaimed foodie. He admits to the joy of cooking and penchant for Food channel shows. With those ingredients combined, vigorously stirred, baked for a long time and served hot we have a tasty, nutritious offering on the table. Sit down, savor it and enjoy it – yes, I’m now done with the cooking metaphor! The title of Ingram’s introduction “The Crisis of Fast Food Ministry” pulls the reader in quickly to the core of the thesis. In these times we very well understand the difference between pre-packaged and homegrown food.Throughout the book the author skillfully ties in his experience, his value of strategic structures, his love for God’s people and the organic food metaphor all displaying a systemic approach toward offering a healthy and sustainable ministry to youth and their families. Some of the highlights for me were: following the cue of St. Patrick in his response to people, the value of longevity as a necessity, sorting out “wildflowers” from “weeds,” the role of the PR game and leaving “Miracle Grow” on the shelf. There is much more I could add but I will leave that for you to discover.Appropriately Mr. Ingram ends the book by calling the reader to Godly and holistic character as shepherds in our leadership. The health and sustainability of our ministry begins in our personal relationship with God followed by our relationship with family or significant friends outside the ministry. From the overflow of these relationships comes our most effective ministry. In this chapter the author closes the loop on what it means to let the youth ministry reflect our love for God, love for our youth/families, love for ourselves and continuing to work rich soil we are granted through faithfulness in our lives. At this point in life I have many books in my office. If I could only keep ten, Organic Student Ministry would be one of them.Doug RanckAssociate Pastor of YouthFree Methodist Church of Santa Barbara, California

I would go back in time and do two things... 1.) Buy stock in Apple and 2.) Give myself a copy of this book.If I had read Organic Student Ministry as a 19 year old bright eyed intern or as a 21 year old slightly (or completely) overwhelmed and goateed youth minister, Not only would I have been able to do ministry from a much healthier place, but, I could have saved myself so many struggles and much grief (i.e. hair loss) as a young youth worker.Having said that, I have been in youth ministry for 10+ years and this book has helped me to reconsider the ways and places I do youth ministry from in my life. I have read so many books on youth ministry and there are typically two kinds of books when it comes to student ministry... ones that speak into the practical "how- to" items of youth ministry and ones that speak into the whys or the heart of youth ministry and working in a healthy way. Organic Student Ministry does both. Stephen does a great job of blending practical advice on youth ministry and how to avoid the common pitfalls of all the interpersonal relationships you'll have in church work while also speaking right into the heart and encouraging you to do a check up on your own soul as a youth worker. This book is NOT a "Twenty five tips to grow your youth ministry by 50% in the next three months" or a one size fits all fix for your ministry. In fact, it's quite the opposite and much deeper. This book speaks less into the "magic bullet" approach to reaching students and keeping them in the four walls of the church and more into a holistic way of doing youth ministry.Buy this book if you are tired of doing youth ministry the same old way and expecting new results.Buy this book if you are brand new to youth ministry and terrified.Buy this book if you're tired of the constant power struggles and interpersonal drama with parents, volunteers or staff. (i.e. adults! Who knew that so much of youth ministry was dealing with adults?!)Buy this book if you're the old pro who is on year 10 at the same church (Congrats!) or the youth minister who is on church #4 in the last five years and are tired of hearing how great the guy before you was.Buy this book if you're a broke intern. Get Schooled on Youth Ministry By Johnathan & Priscilla Whether you are new to youth ministry or veteran in youth ministry this book will prove to be a valuable resource. What I appreciate most about this book is that it is not a top ten list, 3 quick steps, or the next new fad. While this book is packed with thoughtful helps and recommendations for navigating what I consider some of the most common situations, dilemmas, challenges, and decisions those leading youth ministries face, it is done so with applicable story, context, and in a way that brings depth and credibility to those recommendations. You are immediately struck by the authors breadth of experience and wisdom as you read this book. From this day forward as I engage, encourage, and counsel youth workers as they navigate ministry, when posed with a question, my first thought will be "Did Organic Student Ministry Address this issue?" and point them to read that section of this book.In our fast-pace, at your fingertips, instant, society, you are encouraged to be prayerful, discerning, watchful, listener, and observer. As the author put it "The only way you can help lead a student ministry toward and into fruitful ministry is to help it grow where it is planted. In order to do this you have to know a lot more than student ministry tips and tricks. You have to dig deep in the history, the passion, the DNA, and the people of the student ministry and the church."Turn on the fireplace, grab your hot chocolate, lean forward and get ready to be schooled by a youth ministry sage.Johnathan Barnes - Consultant, Church Planter, Former Youth Pastor

The author has an amazing ability to educate while entertaining - I never imagined I could learn so much about history and language while reading to be entertained! It's refreshing to pick up a book full of intrigue and action and not be subjected to harsh language or anything offensive. Don't be mislead - the book is filled with terror and a lot of death ... it's just written tastefully. I wonder if the producer and cameraman will be up for more international jobs - I'd love to read about them if they are!

The only reason I gave this a 4 instead of a 5 is because he used the Dan Brown technique of foreshadowing at the end of some of his chapters, which I dislike. On the other hand, the plot was quite intricate and the characters were great. It's really closer to a 3 than a 4.

Cleverly written and highly adventurous take on history, buried treasure, terrorism, and surprisingly, cinematography and an incredibly resourceful cameraman. I look forward to the next one from the author!

You’ve heard people say “Who you are matters more than what you do”. Does the Bible really teach that?

In Garden City, popular pastor and speaker John Mark Comer gives a fresh take on our calling and our purpose, with a surprisingly counter-culture take. Through his creative and conversational style, Comer takes a good look at Genesis and the story of a man, a woman, and a garden. He unpacks God’s creation and his original intent for how we are meant to spend our time. Here, you’ll find answers to questions like “Does God care where I work?”  “What about what I do with my free time or how much rest I get?” “Does he have a clear direction for me?”

Practical and theologically rich, Garden City speaks to twenty and thirty-somethings who are figuring out next steps and direction in their lives.

Garden City is the Purpose Driven Life for the next generation—the book that helps us answer why we are here and what should we do about it.

Garden City: Work, Rest, and the Art of Being Human., by John Mark Comer

Review In Garden City John Mark Comer takes the reader on a journey--- from creation to the final heavenly city. But the journey is designed to let each of us see where we are to find ourselves in God’s good plan to partner with us in the redemption of all creation. Smack-dab in the middle of this set of ideas is Comer’s excellent sketch of work, a sketch I find both pastorally mature and an exhortation to each of us to know that all we do has value before God. There is in Garden City an intoxication with the Bible’s biggest and life-changing ideas. (Scot McKnight, Julius R. Mantey Professor of New Testament, Northern Seminary)There is an awakening happening in the Western church. We are rediscovering that God’s mission includes all of creation, not just church work, and he intends for us to be flourishing people, not just religious disciples. John Mark Comer’s book continues this awakening with accessible insight into forgotten biblical truths about the importance of our identity as women and men created in God’s image, the value of our vocations in the world, and a ravishing vision of the beautiful future we are building with God today. Everyone who reads this book will see themselves, their work, and their world with new eyes. (Skye Jethani, author of With, Futureville, and the With God Daily Devotional (WithGodDaily.com))His writing is informal and infectious, growing on the reader as the topics get more intimate. (Publisher’s Weekly (review of John Mark Comer’s Loveology))Does what we do for work --- in an office, factory, and kitchen, or studio--- matter to God? Is “the Lord’s work” relegated to those who receive paychecks from churches and nonprofits? In Garden City, John Mark’s unique knack for distilling lofty academic concepts into pragmatic, reader-friendly prose focuses on the hugely important and often overlooked interconnectedness of faith and vocation. Knowing him like we do, it’s easy to see his profound desire to know and live the way of Jesus, and to pursue work that matters to God’s redemptive plan, poured out on these pages. (The elders of Bridgetown: A Jesus Church)

Coming from someone who LOVES work, it was refreshing to hear John Mark's perspective on the history, future and the purpose of the human desire and need to work. If you need motivation and clarity to frame your perspective on your vocation or just want to get an idea of what vocation is, you will enjoy this book.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Good Message, Different Writing Style By Jill Foley This book was a bit different than most. The style of writing was hard to get used to. It’s written in a very ‘blog-ish’ style that gets a little melodramatic at times (frankly, it got annoying). The book is filled with one sentence paragraphs and no paragraph indentations. The page layout is more akin to a list of proverbs or bullet-points than a storyline. Yet there was a story, and a good one at that. The use of three word sentences and ellipses were excessive. I had to learn to ignore the fact that it read more like a cell phone texting conversation than a book. Yet, putting aside the stylistic issues, I found the content to be insightful and useful. In particular, I liked Comer’s description of Sabbath, how it can be observed from a practical point of view, and its spiritual implications. I found the new kingdom theology of the book refreshing. So few Christian leaders embrace and communicate the literal new heavens and new earth paradigm that Comer reminds us of. He explains that we were built for this planet, and that we have purpose and work to do here, now and in the eternal future. This vision of a new Earth and our vocation on it is an important message, and Comer explains it clearly and biblically.I really liked the themes outlined in this book. However, I did struggle with the lack of complexity around the vocation topic. The book somewhat assumes that you know (or can know) your role or vocation and that you will be most content when you are doing it. Although that is likely true, I would venture to say that most of us don’t know our true vocation (God help me if my present job, which did feel like a calling, is also my eternal vocation). The notion that vocation, skills, and one’s ‘art’ can change over time or may even be ultimately elusive seemed absent from the discussion. At times the author seems to get a bit ‘Oprah-esk’ in his encouragement that we follow our dreams. He writes; “You’re a king, a queen. So Rule the world. Chase the sun over the horizon and drag the rest of us with you. I’m behind you all the way”. While I appreciate his sentiments and encouragement for Christians to seek out their potential and thrive rather than just exist or settle, a part of me kept wanting to rebut and say, ‘but Jesus didn’t call us to realize our dreams, or even be fulfilled in our work goals.’ There didn’t seem to be a real recognition that for most of us, our calling is simply endurance. It’s taking up our cross and sacrificing rather than finding contentment in our jobs or vocation. At times the call to chase our dreams or live out our potential just fell flat for me. Don’t misunderstand, Comer is no adherent to the prosperity gospel and early on he points out that the freedom to seek our purpose and vocation is a luxury that few but us spoiled Westerners have. Nevertheless, I would have liked more a deeper discussion of how we find our vocation and calling in conjunction with our other responsibilities.Although I fully believe he has sound theology and sincere aims, it was hard not to think of this book as one written for wealthy hipsters who are simply bored. Ultimately I would recommend this book. Comer does a good job explaining the value of work and our role in developing and redeeming the Earth. I think his theology and hermeneutics are good and actually quite orthodox. If you’re looking for intellectual writing or graceful prose, pick up Dallas Willard or Dietrich Bonhoeffer, but if you’re looking for a quick read that recaptures the work ethic of Eden and our duty to creation then pick up this book.I received a free copy of this book from BookLook Bloggers in exchange for this review.

The Mysterious sPhone, Vol. 1, by Mr. Roosevelt H. Brown

From the Author I dedicate this novel to every man, woman & child no matter their age, who still believes that "imagination is everything. It is the preview of life's coming attractions." I'm just a guy from Brooklyn New York who can't escape the thoughts that cloud my mind on a everyday basis, that is until now, because here within these pages I share those thoughts with you. In hopes that the reader(s) can ultimately grasp onto the metaphors used in this story, & to point out that not only can the technology we possess everyday give us access to a world of knowledge but it's one of the few keys we hold in the palm of our hands that grants us the visions of our everyday endeavors. For the reader(s) who feel alone, misunderstood, misguided & are the unfortunate victims of being bullied more often than most, I hope you can take your "smartphone" whether it be old or new, heavy or lightweight, iPhone or Android & realize that you have much more power in your hands than you can possibly fathom. A world of possibilities, answers & new discoveries are right at your fingertips, whatever you're going through trust & believe there's an app for that ;-)

About the Author Roosevelt H. Brown was born in Newark, New Jersey, to Trinidadian American & African American parents who were born & raised in New Jersey. Throughout elementary & high school Roosevelt ultimately excelled in language arts & world history & decided to pursue creative writing & literature in college. Due to unfortunate financial circumstances Brown wasn't able to cross that threshold, after years of working uncomfortably for numerous retail stores he officially relocated to New York where he's lived in Queens, Manhattan & now in Brooklyn. He also returned to his passion of storytelling & began to write his first book, "The Mysterious sPhone Volume 1" currently available via amazon.com & createspace.com. Roosevelt continues to pursue his passion & hopes to create great novels that are relate-able to readers as well as pass on the messages & metaphors of his stories.

The twisted circumstances surrounding an unspeakable crime, an old man’s fortune, and a production of Shakespeare’s The Tempest come to light four decades on in this masterful tale of greed, deception, and murder by CWA Gold Dagger winner Peter Dickinson Behind his practiced facade of cheerful sophistication, the renowned actor Adrian Waring is a haunted man. The ghost that torments him is from an earlier era, when a world war raged and Adrian was still Andrew, the guest and possible heir of his rich uncle, Arnold Wragge. Wragge had returned from the diamond mines of South Africa with a fortune and a loyal servant named Samuel Mkele, and when his own son vanished, presumably in the smoke of combat, the old man looked to his poor relation as a potential replacement. Andrew’s true interests lay elsewhere, however, in applause and the attentions of eager young ladies, both of which he realized he could have by starring in his cousin’s amateur production of The Tempest. But young Andrew’s fledgling theatrics would prove merely to be the opening act of a horrific human tragedy, forcing him to keep a terrible truth locked inside himself—even four decades after a body was discovered hanging from a perfect dovecote gallows . . .   A master practitioner of the literary art of mystery and murder, author Peter Dickinson stands tall alongside P. D. James, Ruth Rendell, Reginald Hill, and other luminaries of contemporary British crime fiction. A brilliant innovator unafraid to tamper with the rules of genre, he is at the very top of his game with this gripping, twisting, and altogether remarkable psychological thriller.

Might Be Dickinson's Best By Kevin Killian I wonder if the vogue for Peter Dickinson's crime novels is over, for people aren't talking about him the way they once used to. He's pretty much a back number now, isn't he? Of course he must be quite old by now, but his children's books continue to sell well. PERFECT GALLOWS, written in his prime (1988) continues to stun with its sheer power and its Henry Jamesian returns to a distant past, so that the narrative swings back and forth between today and a long-ago near forgotten wartime, when the famous actor and playwright, Adrian Waring, arrives at a guided house tour showing off a fabulous English country house now given to the National Trust. Flashbacks show us Andrew, Adrian's adolescent self, as he arrives at the domain of ancient old Sir Arnold Wragge, a rough son of a bitch who made his fortune in the diamond fields of South Africa and brought his valet, a strapping, kindly black man called Samuel, back to England to dress him and pour alcohol down his throat.Otherwise all Sir Arnold does is lord it over his two middle-aged daughters and moan about a son who disappeared in the previous war ages ago. He's an astonishing character, and Dickinson outdoes himself in pouring on the gluttony, the sheer desperation of a man once vital now facing death in the eye with a swagger. The Blitz has brought little Andrew to the country, for the Wragges are distant relations and the two sisters are kindly. He has escaped from a bitterly poor childhood on the docks but what they don't understand is, he loved it there. But what he really loves is to act, and one of the two sisters plans a production of THE TEMPEST in the ruined folly which will star Andrew--and the black servant, Samuel, will be Caliban. A local "land girl" is roped in to be Miranda, and Andrew soon realizes if he plays the part of a feeling boy, he will be able to seduce her. Pigeons coo in a tall tower overhead, which becomes the young lover's rendez-vous.Sir Arnold realizes that in young Andrew he has found a kinsman with more balls, young as he is, than any other candidate. There's a spiritual bond between them too--they are both as soulless as animals. PERFECT GALLOWS is a cat and mouse game featuring two of the most vicious, callous protagonists you have ever read about in a novel, and yet we come to care for them both, difficult as it seems. Peter Dickinson, with his powerful intellect and his marvelous gift for scene-making, shines a steady light into wartime values; showing that while England fought for its life, not all the action was in the air or on the sea. It's chilling and exemplary at once, and might be Dickinson's best.
