Another thrilling action-adventure novel from Mr. Walker By Lee Gimenez Author Alex Walker follows his success in the action-adventure genre with his third novel in the Toltec series, Zenox. Zenox is an action-packed mystery about gold treasure during the Civil War era. The story revolves around the characters Simon and Elijah, soldiers who are sent to South America to bring back gold the Confederates had hidden there. But their journey leads them deep into the Amazon, and they eventually begin searching for lost Inca gold and the legendary city of El Dorado. I don’t want to give away the cool ending, so I’ll tell you instead that the book has an intricate, action driven plot. Simon and Elijah face danger at every turn, as they try to evade hired killers, headhunters, crocodiles, and piranhas. I hope the author writes another mystery book soon, because I want to read it.

If you've read TOLTEC and CUZCO (and I recommend you do), then you'll already know how enjoyable this series is. ZENOX continues the good, old-fashioned fun with a strong dose of history, a dash of speculation, and some imaginative science fiction, all wrapped up in a thrilling action-adventure—a wonderful blend of genres. Our friends Elijah, Simon, and the inimitable Prof. George Scott are on their way to find a Confederate General in exile in Brazil when they are diverted by the more enticing opportunity to locate the mythical El Dorado. As we have come to expect, their journey is not without its challenges. In fact, the water hogs, blowguns with curare darts, and a nasty little invention called a jebero might very well sneak into your dreams after you've read late into the night. This author certainly knows how to make life difficult for his characters. The ending is thrilling, pure Saturday matinee excitement. But far be it from me to say any more; I want you to enjoy every reading minute of this thoroughly entertaining novel. May the adventures continue in Book 4!

It is not for someone who wants a quick devotion. It challenges you to sit and ponder what you've read. Don't skip over the suggested scripture. I like the fact that every week there is a different writer. This is not for someone who is a novice. It is well worth the effort. I think it will provide you with a challenge.

Kimball Bent (24 August 1837 – 22 May 1916), also known as "Kimble Bent", was a soldier and adventurer, who deserted from the British Army during the New Zealand Wars and lived for the reminder of his life among the Maori people of New Zealand. Bent was born in Eastport, Maine USA. He ran away to sea at 17 and spent three years travelling the Atlantic seaboard as a sailor/ gunner in the US Navy. He returned to Eastport but was restless and sailed to Liverpool, England. Penniless and seeking adventure on 18 October 1859 he enlisted in the 57th (West Middlesex) Regiment of Foot in the British Army. He served in India and his unit was posted to New Zealand in 1861. His record was dubious, and he was repeatedly disciplined for various military infractions including disobedience and drunkenness. This discipline included a prison sentence in Wellington, and receiving lashes in front of his company. Bent accordingly decided to desert in June 1865 while serving in Taranaki. Bent was found by a local Māori chief of the Ngāti Ruanui iwi in South Taranaki and eventually became accepted as a part of the local tribe. He fell in with Titokowaru's followers in 1867 and fought with them against the colonists in what has become known as Titokowaru's War until their eventual defeat in 1869. Bent then went into hiding first in the backblocks of Taranaki and later in Wairau, Blenheim. He spent his remaining years working in several trades including as a builder, fisherman, horticulturist, tattooist, traditional healer using Maori medicine and even a confectioner. He remained a wanted deserter with a reward on his head for many years, but eventually the authorities stopped looking for him. In 1903 he was rediscovered, and a book was written about his life by James Cowan. Entitled The adventures of Kimble Bent: a story of wild life in the New Zealand bush,, it was something of sensation at the time. He died in Wairau Hospital on 22 May 1916.

An Insider Look At Maori At War By A Thoughtful Consumer The publisher must have read the previous reviewer's observations, my digital version was in excellent format for kindle and all the photos and illustrations were clear and sharp. The only thing that was lacking was the chapters and table of contents were not linked. There are lots of James Cowan authors and I believe the book description listed the wrong one. The author of this memoir is the New Zealander James Cowan. He wrote a lot of books about the New Zealand Wars and the Maori around the beginning to the mid 1900s. He is much better known in New Zealand than in the US.The book description that Amazon has provided does a super job of laying out what the book is and some of the background that got Kimble Bent to the Maori. The cool picture on the front of the book is not Bent but a well know Maori HauHau fighter whose story is described in the book. While the book centers on Bent, Cowan actually interviewed many Maori who fought on both sides of the war so you get a pretty full picture of how a tribe at war functioned. Cowan does a great job of expressing the 'feel' of battle as well as the tribal politics that determined whether there would be any fighting. Of particular interest is the fact that Bent was witness to how a gunfighter pa (fort) was built from the start and exactly how the Maori designed the walls and the insides to withstand artillery. It has been noted in the past that the Maori were so innovative in their ideas of modern defense, particularly in the idea of trench warfare, that the British took their lessons to WWI and changed how that war was fought. One of the vivid scenes is the construction of a pa and on the front a giant wood figure with moving arms and legs. When battle started the figure's arms and legs were made to move by ropes, imitating a great haka dance, intimidating the enemy as they advanced. Bent was also witness to the grizzlier side of Maori warfare, the afterbattle cannibal victory feast is described in detail and how severed enemy heads were smoked and prepared as war trophies ( a Maori specialty). While Bent was among the HauHau fighters for years, he was never allowed weapons and was constantly on the lookout for possible assassins. But strangely he got married into several different tribes during his stay. He was sort of a slave, sort of a armorer, sort of a tribe member, sort of a confidant to the tribal chiefs, and in the end really a free man. A very different sort of book and a different angle on the Maori of old.

This one suffers from poor situation development, too much jumping around, and too many killings with limited context. As with many authors he has pushed the Dillon franchise too far until it becomes rote dialogue and activity by shallow characters

Not only was the story virtually impossible to follow, but there must have been 50 characters, many of whom were related in some fashion. I must admit that I simply could not keep them straight.

Stormwind is a good warm up to what I think is to come of an anticipated long series of adventures that will not disappoint. I literally want more. Stormwind is packed with action, love and betrayal, an epic battle against good and evil, and not to mention mystical creatures, that made it an enjoyable read. It captivated me from beginning till end. I look forward to reading the next Blood Wizard Chronicles' series title.

Lewis, Arthur C Clark, Lron Hubbard and my first book I ever read of this genre, The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolken, when I was in middle school. I have read many books since over the last thirty-six years. I have found that Author Jay Erickson has captivated his audience with Stormwind. His ability to immerse you into the world he has created with the colorful characters with all their strengths and weaknesses add to the suspense of his creative writing style. His ability to incorporate all the classic plots with twist and turns, add to the readers desire to find out what will happen next. Author Jay Erickson writes a great performance. Just as the reader begins to think he knows what’s going on a new revelation emerges. I find this beginning to this series intriguing, and await his next publication to see where this all ends. I find that Stormwind is more than a traveler, in my opinion. It will be interesting to see how this man will define his fate in the world Jay Erickson has created. I will be recommending it to my friends, family and all who also enjoy such books of this genre.

Trekles Interesting first look into a new fantasy world. It is always fun to see how various authors imagine worlds and characters that are fantasy, but also draw on what we know from modern culture and society. I think it's important to note that this is a novella, and centered mostly on the story and the action. To that end, the action can get pretty grisly at times, but it does give you a very vivid sense of what's going on. The writer has created a very "gritty" kind of world here. You also get an understanding of the current state of the world and the people in it, but there just isn't a lot of room in a short novella for lots of character development. So if you are looking for lots of high drama and characterization, this might not be the story you want, but if you want action and a fast-moving story with a very intriguing twist, then you will definitely want to give this a read.

A Tide Worth Turning By Deana I received a copy of this book from the author for an honest review.Addison is a hardworking woman who is still trying to overcome her grief of losing her dad. Her mother Lee Ann , recently suffered a stroke and needs to have someone look after her. Her mom is very independent and tries to convince Addison she doesn't need a "babysitter." They both are stubborn and neither one will budge an inch on the arrangement of Lee Ann's care. Without warning, Addison has arranged a care giver to come to the house and take care of her mom.When she opens the door, there stands Logan, the new care giver. He is quite handsome and has an Australian accent that is very charming. His credentials are quite impressive and Lee Ann grudgingly gives in. It turns out that he is an excellent cook and is smitten with Addison. But what secrets could Logan be hiding? Is he to good to be true? Can he be trusted?Addison soon discovers that an older man has been seen standing outside her mom's house and Logan volunteers to go and confront him . "Peace" for me, has gone beyond any expectations I had from reading her previous books. Come inside the lives of those she pens and gather your imagination as you're taken away and when you return, God is that much closer to your heart. My wife and I were delighted with Lamond’s first book and this one too. The story takes surprising twists, the characters are believable and engaging, and the dialogue moves swiftly as the plot unfolds around the world. This adventure is well written, and one that will have you turning the pages to see where it all goes.

The first one was good, but a little bit too fast to a European reader. The book shows his vast knowledge of situations world-wide -which is quite unusual for an American author- but also of specific places here in Europe. I do recommend this book and am already waiting for the next one! Kerstin in Valence France.

Pretty darn good By Kristina Review courtesy of All Things Urban FantasyPOSSESSED BY A WOLF is a pretty fun action packed story with an at times confusing world building which was partially due to my habitual tendency to jump blindly into the middle of a series. That aside I enjoyed the tension and political machinations the characters have to work through while bullets fly, people are put in deadly peril, and things go boom.We get mystery, doppelgangers, fae, and ghosts to keep us on our toes trying to figure out just whodunnit. Thrilling action and much property damage aside the romance between Faran and Lexie was filled with mixed emotions and some wicked humor.I liked how Faran and Lexie get thrust together and forced to be in eachother's company after so many years apart. It forces them to work through their issues and inner turmoil and allows for some smart quips to be exchanged. I enjoyed seeing Lexie's transformation and realization about her own emotions and experiences and how they affected her reaction and relationship with Faran. Surrounding our main characters are other characters who I assume were in the previous two books and who are interesting enough that I want to go back and read about them.POSSESSED BY A WOLF is by no means the end of this series as this series is titled Horsemen and we need to figure out what trouble the fourth Horseman will find himself in. I enjoyed throwing myself headlong into this story, with its complex characters and exhilarating story.

Sharon Ashwood has created a fascinating world with lots of interesting and different elements that add something extra to the stories. I was completely engrossed in this story from beginning to end and while I have not read the previous two, I had no trouble figuring out who's who although I do feel as if I missed something so I am certainly looking forward to reading the ones I missed and without a doubt the next one.See my full review at: Paranormal Haven .com

That's what I did and if I hadn't looked it up, I would still think this is a stand-alone.So go for it, if it sounds like you could enjoy it.Anyway, now let's get back to my review.I requested this book on NetGalley, because I was on the search for a good werewolf/shifter/changeling book and I've found it in Possessed By A Wolf published by Harlequin Nocturne (they do have quite some nice books) and written by Sharon Ashwood.This isn't the first time I've heard about Sharon Ashwood - Goodreads is recommending her to me all the time -, but I never picked up a book by her (sorry!). I think I'm going to change that, because I quite enjoyed Possessed By A Wolf.It was a fun, fast-paced read that I nearly read through in one sitting.The main reason for me to enjoy the book was that I really liked the main characters. Faran, our hero, was funny and quite adorable and Lexie might have been a bit annoying in the beginning, but after two or three chapters I liked her as well.What I also liked about Possessed By A Wolf was the fact that this wasn't a pure paranormal romance, but it had this whole adventure theme on it. That ensures I will NEVER buy the next book. I think that is manipulative and I don't read that author again typically. Write a book and finish it. The H was a cold personality and the h was a doormat. It was a very unrealistic story line.

That's what this boils down to, but the story is handled well and the characters are more likeable than the usual fare. This does not feature page after page of sexual activity; which is a blessing. As a result you get a good, clean, honest to goodness, wholesome romance. A refreshing change. Well constructed, well edited and well worth reading.

By Damon Trent The author has created a world filled with suspence,action and characters that become so real it is like watching a movie as you get lnto the book. I had trouble at first with some of the words describing animals, places, distances, money and even occupations etc. in the world she's created here but decided to just go with it and figure it out as I went along, So glad I did. The story is exceptional in every regard. She takes the time at then end to explain terms used, sayings, places, language references for anyone who wants to know. Not needed to thoroughly enjoy this novel but very interesting to read and see the detail she went through to create this world. Looking foward to the rest of the series.

About the Author Marcha Fox has loved science fiction since she was a child with the stars always holding a strong sense of mystery and fascination. Her love of astronomy resulted in a bachelor of science degree in physics from Utah State University followed by a 21 year career at NASA where she held a variety of positions including technical writer, engineer and eventually manager. Her NASA experience was primarily at Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas but included trips to Cape Canaveral in Florida, visiting other Centers in Mississippi, Alabama and Maryland as well as visits to the European Space Agency in The Netherlands. Her most memorable experience, however, was the sad task of helping to recover space shuttle debris in East Texas following the tragic Columbia accident in 2003. "NASA was a great career experience, but writing is what I've always wanted to do. To me there is nothing more exhilarating than bringing a character to life." She has made it a point to "do the math" regarding various elements in her books to assure accuracy and hoping to instill an interest in science and engineering to her readers in an enjoyable and entertaining way. She admits that Cyraria's figure-8 orbit around a binary star system is a bit of a stretch but maintains it is mathematically feasible even though it would be unstable with life on such a planet beyond challenging with its seasonal extremes. "But that's what makes it a good setting for the story," she adds. Born in Peekskill, New York she has lived in California, Utah and Texas in the course of raising her family and currently resides in the Texas Hill Country. Whether “Refractions of Frozen Time,” the fourth and final volume of the Star Trails Tetralogy series will be the last she states, "These characters have a life of their own and may move on to other adventures."

By Erika I love science so much that I’ve designated my career to teaching it in the public schools. I discovered Marcha Fox about a year ago and have been a fan since. I’ve read the Star Trails Tetralogy and found the science so sound that her stories are very plausible. They are fiction but she leaves the “what if” doors wide open for one’s imagination. The Compendium is a fantastic guide for the entire Star Trails enthusiast. It includes a glossary, wish I’d had it on hand when I read the books the first time. She includes maps, star facts, a Cyrarian Calmanac, character descriptions and more!She also includes a section for teachers to work elements of the series into their lesson plans with great fantastic high level questions and explanations for each book and each chapter such as, “What do you think it would be like to be in a black hole?” In the series a black hole is used as a prison. Or, “What are some of the reasons that the habitable planets in an intergalactic society would employ space stations as points of entry?” Good brain questions. The type that get students synapses firing!She includes her website which has an entire parents and educators page.For sci-fi fans, teachers, students, parents the Star Trails Tetralogy and Compendium are a must read!

Great Resource for the Star Trails Tetralogy Series By JeLF This is part of the Star Trails Tetralogy series box set and I am reviewing each book individually.Marcha Fox wrote this as a work of fiction to accompany her Star Trails Tetralogy series, which I absolutely loved. As with her novels, her scientific terminology is accurate, though I am sure it is used in a fictional sense.For instance, "Ballome: Portable structures formed from inflatable epoxy that cures and hardens in the ultraviolet rays of the sun. Used for temporary outposts on primitive worlds. Most contain basic heating and cooling systems and gel insulation that protects from most climates as well as plumbing. Usually have a galley kitchen, living area and two bedrooms equipped with built-in sleeping cylls." .... to the best of my knowledge, here on earth, we don't have the technology to fabricate inflatable epoxy into anything the size of a house, though I would love to see this happen.The Compendium also includes information on star systems and an entire section devoted to Cyrarian weather, which is very useful, since in A Psilent Place Below, as well as other stories when the characters were on Cyrarian, the weather was a big factor in the story. Not surprisingly, there are also lesson plan suggestions, for the science that readers absorb as they read her Star Trails Tetralogy series - and of course, as a physics major, her emphasis is on physics.

Casey Weidenfeld, is a student, a golfer, studying for her Bat Mitzvah, and extremely creative.The book is about hard times in young peoples lives, and how their friendship with one another keeps them going and when you meet Fallon the main character you immediately start rooting for her. The author pulls you right into all the characters lives and virtually makes you part of them. As you read one page after another, it is truly amazing that the author is so young and if this is the kind of writing Casey can do now, all we can expect in the future is best sellers."The Golden Flares" has many people struggling with their lives, very young people, and as you turn one page after another you find yourself cheering them on. The book will not make the New York Times best Seller list, however is a memorable start for this young lady, Casey Weidenfel writing career.I sincerely think that Casey will go on to great things and I for one look forward to any new novel she will write. Casey 's book is extremely readable.I highly recommend that all Middle School and High School libraries include "The Golden Flares" in their collections.

A fantastic novel by a young author By Allison Naumann "The Golden Flares" is a beautifully written book that is sure to keep you rooting for its rebel protagonists long after the final page has turned. The author snatches your attention instantly, pulling you into the minds of her elegantly crafted character crew as they struggle to survive.I commend such a young author for creating such a captivating story! Though her action scenes can a bit jumpy and could use better clarification and description, the overall story won my heart. I hope to see many more novels from this wonderful young lady in the future as she continues to hone her skill in writing.

I always judge a book by how long the characters stay with me as I read the story and even after I finish it. Over the time that I read the book, I found myself thinking about the characters, what happened to them and what would happen next. That is a sign of a good story! If you like dystopian novels, this is a good one with some interesting twists and turns. The author gives readers a look into a young girls world as it is turned upside down, how she struggles to survive and protect her friends. I think older elementary, middle school and even adult readers addicted to young adult fiction will love it!

While I love Vicki and Parks, I have to mention the supporting character of Biggins who is a hot contrast! Biggins is full of confident bristle, a larger-than-life powerhouse that steals every scene. The dialogue between her and Parks is entertaining, a brother-sister attitude of verbally sparing at one another, and had me laughing. Fair warning to the author: if Biggins does not survive this series, I will be heartbroken! Overall, a thrilling conspiracy novel - held my interest to the final page and left me wanting more!

It was a gift copy.]I REALLY wanted to like this book and was disappointed that I simply did not. The first thing I had difficulty with was the use of the present tense. Everything is happening right now. Main characters are walking across the room rather than allowing me the separation of reading this as something that has happened, "walked across the room". It's an important distinction because the book takes on the feel of reading a script rather than the retelling of an enjoyable story. I was willing to finish this book, even trying to adjust to this uncomfortable writing style because I hoped to find something wonderful here. Just now I was suddenly "confronted" by a particularly graphic piece in the book, and was so stunned by it's inclusion that I lost all possible interest in continuing on.There are scenes of violence in books that are significant to a story and help it move on--a necessary evil I suppose. Then there are scenes of what feels like gratuitous violence, allowing us a glimpse into the psyche of the author that perhaps we would rather not have seen. For me, SciFi is a genre that rarely merits inclusion of sexual violence. It's really just not my thing. This book may be exceptional from this point on, but with 36 chapters spread out over a mere 117 pages, the odd use of tense that the author chose to use and the inclusion of this particular act of violence, I can say that I've had enough.

Davis CODE X: Episode 1 plays out like a movie script filled with thrilling action and intrigue. This is Michael Vallone’s first in the series of A Science Fiction Mystery/Genetic Conspiracy Thriller, and I’m sure there will be many more to come. I found it difficult to put the book down especially as the danger escalated for Vicki and her fiancé, Nick. For a science fiction mystery, the story contained just enough of the fantastic, tech jargon to give you a feel for the complexity of the plot, but not so much that it doesn’t cross genres to the thriller side.CODE X is a fast paced thriller, and Michael Vallone an author to follow.
