You know who really gets screwed in the whole "hero" enterprise? The handler. All of the blood, guts, and stomach wrenching terror. Broken dates, sudden departures, drinks in the lap. Sleep deprivation. FBI surveillance on your internet traffic because of the drone thing... And ye gods, the clean up. All of the crap. None of the glory. My name is Rhys Ivar. I'm that guy. And compared to me, that dude with the knife at the gunfight is a lucky bastard.

An Interesting Take on the Superhero Genre By Brian Beam Hero Handlers provides a unique and interesting spin on the superhero genre, focusing on the guy who takes care of everything behind the scenes to allow the "heroes" to focus on, well, being "heroes". One thing I love about this book is that it focuses so much on the relationships among the primary characters - Rhys(the titular hero handler), his sister Linette(who is brilliantly written), his best friend Chase(playboy millionaire by day, reckless crime fighter by night), Artie(Chase's sister, voice of reason, and partner in crime-fighting), Kass(Rhys's witty librarian love interest and more . . .), among a few others. Each shines with personality, and the banter between any two of them is pure gold(Sondheimer has a knack for witty, entertaining dialogue).Yes, there are a couple of bad guys peppered throughout the book, but this story is one of character growth amongst the good guys, a refreshing change of pace in a genre currently being shaped by people hoping to capitalize of the Marvel-movie-ish formula for success. However, though I love that Sondheimer took this approach, it would be nice if there was a little more villain development. There is a hint of this to come in the next volume(and she better write it!), but so little attention is placed on said hint, that the ending's climax loses a bit of its punch.Even so, this is a fast-paced, fun, funny, and entertaining tale that is more than worth the time and cost of entry.

Fresh spin on super-heroics By Luke McCullough A fun twist on the super-hero story, because in this one the main character is the 'Alfred' rather than the Batman. Starting from a dead-end job Rhys Ivar is thrust into the world of super-heroes when his best friend reveals himself to be a vigilante and asks Rhys for his help. Being a super-hero by day and a layabout millionaire by day does not leave a lot of time for repairing bullet holes or working the blackmarket to buy replacement gear, that is where Rhys comes in. Set lovingly in Pittsburgh, far away from the typical New York City of most super-heroics, the story carves out its own world and joyfully plays in it.Seeing how Rhys balances a real life and his secret life is great fun. You get to see all of the action from the other side, and there are enough twists on the super-hero idea hiding here keep you on a good ride until the end.Recommended and enjoyed.

By Lovestoread I enjoyed this book and loved the idea of having "human" superheroes without particular super powers. The characters were engaging and I look forward to seeing what happens to them in the next book!
