The plot is easy but interesting to follow with a twist at the end. The read is engrossing and pleasant. No turmoil trying to figure out what the author means but suspense in where the book may go next. The characters have their personal histories which unfold as the story goes on. There isn't a lugubrious page of detail anywhere. At the end you wonder if this sort of story can ever become reality. Certainly not in the foreseeable future. But there's just enough nexus with the present to make the story believable for the future. The author has a relaxed style of writing that makes reading a pleasure and easy to comprehend. You don't need a dictionary to read and understand this book. But you do need a spirit of adventure, an ability to wonder. The title is simply 'Human' and though this is sic-fi it is intensely human, filled with human sense and emotion, human dreams and faults ... and human character. I guess that's the main thing I can say about this very readable and enjoyable story: it is so very personal. We see these kinds of people every day at work, in our families, churches and among our friends and neighbors. We read about them in news reports and see them on social networks. This novel not only uses the axiom that we have met the enemy and it is us. It also says we have met the good people and they are us.This would make a great movie. It is written almost in movie sequencing. I'm looking forward to the author's next work.

The characters were well developed and relatable. It starts out slowly but before I knew it from the action and twists it was over. It left me wanting more. I love when I can read a story, but it has elements within it that give you the feeling that there is some realism to it.

What's the point of technology? Are we free? And if not, who is in control? In pop culture philosophy and theology, through decades, centuries and even millenniums, these questions have been tackled by thinkers and writers great and minor. In his sci-fi-dystopian-action-thriller Human, author Greg Kinker takes his shot. He tells a tale forcing us to ask not one or two of these questions, but all of them. In Kinker's Human universe, set in some devastated-but-recovering future (distant or near we never really find out), readers see the familiar humanity we all know - families with kids, worker-bees, spouses wishing for new carpeting, bureaucrats, gossips, big-hearted helpers, and people just looking to relax on the porch with a smoke and a drink after a long day's work. This future humanity shares its space on Earth with those humanity has come to hate: cyborgs. The cyborgs share nearly every aspect of the humans they mimic, from looks to emotions. But it doesn't matter. The mechanical portion of their brain makes the cyborgs just unhuman enough to bring out disgust and revulsion in real humans. Humans and cyborgs are enmity. Kinker brings you into his universe through the eyes of an unlikely hero: Max Hooper, a staid, by-the-book official who works at The Bureau, a regional government overseeing all aspects of human and cyborg life. Hooper runs the Human Cyborg Relations department, and in his capacity, does what he can to help cyborgs lead productive lives, even if those lives are tucked away in cyborg ghettos. Kinker touches on lofty and heady topics about what it means to be human, but he doesn't dwell much on the philosophy. Instead, he lets the questions unfold through an action-packed and tense story set against the backdrop of brewing war between humans and cyborgs, Kinker's story is a political thriller that also hold the attention-grabbing power of comic book action movies. I found Kinker's descriptions of battles (battles fought with futuristic weapons and ancient strategies) so engaging that I found myself at the end of certain scenes and chapters much faster than I would have liked. And rarely did I have time to pause and consider the implications of the questions raised in those scenes, because I was immediately thrust into another just-as-gripping scene. This is Kinker's strength: he paints thrilling sci-fi action-movie scenes inside the heads of readers. His writing is neat and tidy, just like his main character. Kinker effortlessly builds tension through Hooper's discovery of political intrigue, imminent war, and secret experiments. And despite the futuristic sci-fi setting, Kinker easily confronts us with the familiar ugliness and beauty that all humans hold inside themselves. We see in the history of the Human universe events that could easily be our own future. Do yourself a favor. Buy this book. It's a great read. And a great ride for both the thrill seeker and thinker alike.
