The office of bishop of Rome, is one of the most powerful positions in the world. As an ancient institution stretching back for centuries, the papacy has a history that is marked by archaic and modern customs alike. The history of the men who have held this position is fraught with villainous and heroic actions that have left a profound impact on the development of civilization as we know it, both in the West and East. The popes led the early Church through persecution, acquired temporal power through the actions of Constantine, oversaw the universal Church in the early middle ages, were steeped in various scandals in the late middle ages, saw their secular power stripped in the modern period, and were instrumental in the rise and fall of various kingdoms and nations.

Vaughan This is an excellent book for anyone wanting clear and concise biographies of the men who have sat in the Seat of St Peter. In this first volume, the prolific Wyatt North starts at the beginning and carries through to the Middle Ages. As might be expected, the book starts with some facts in the case of St Peter, but must also include myth, legend and tradition. With later popes, as church record keeping became more standardized (and bureaucratic), most of the mythic trappings fall away and we are given more verifiable information. Even so, some of the early popes get only a few lines because not much is known about them other than some basic biographical data, some mentions in ecclesiastic and imperial records, and their actions (or non-actions) to various church crises or heresies. As we leave the shadow of Rome behind and pass through the Ostrogoth, Byzantine and other flickers of history, we are treated to more detailed chronicles of the individual popes. North presents an unbiased report for each pope, detailing faith and strength where there was faith and strength, villainy and weakness when there was villainy and weakness. He shows us the saints and sinners, men of faith and men of folly. At the end of the book, North closes with an overview of the period of time covered and a comparison between the Church and the empires under which it existed, a study of the enduring vs the transient. Although this book will be of great interest to a Catholic seeking a quick reference to the popes, it’s also a book recommended for anyone interested in history and the Early Church.

However, the author spent enough time on even the least of the "cast of characters" to give an idea of who they were and their deeds (or mis-deeds). On the more important ones, enough time was spent to get the reader's interest to pursue other sources. Given how rotten some of these people were, the book reinforces our view that the church has a divine origin since it overcame these difficulties through the efforts of truly saintly people.I'm looking forward to the next volumes.

Only through prayer and thoughtful contemplation can we realize our true potential and act upon our God given gift to live every day to its fullest.Through words of wisdom, personal experience, stories shared by others, and reminding us to be still and listen to the greatest voice of all. As you move from chapter to chapter you realize that the person Joyce is speaking to is you and reminding that you need to do the right amount of living to be fulfilled. 25 of 25 people found the following review helpful. It’s so easy to become tangled up in our own thoughts By Danielle Laux It’s so easy to become tangled up in our own thoughts. Even while I was reading The Mind Connection, my mind would begin to wander, thinking of all the activities I needed to accomplish after finishing this one chapter. Which, in turn, would force me to read the chapter slower and get to the rest of my day at a later time.In The Mind Connection, Joyce Meyer speaks to the reader regarding the connection between our thoughts, words, and actions. Each thought we have can and will come through when we mull something over – may it be good or bad. No matter how hard we try to keep our thoughts internal, they will find a way to come forth.Using Scripture, personal stories, and reflection, Meyer provides suggestions on how to clear the mind from the clutter that can come with too many thoughts. As she points out in her book, we cannot control what others say, think, or do, but we can control ourselves. Though it may not be easy, with God’s help all is possible. And in turn, while we are not here to control the change in another person, we can be aware that God is able, and to leave it in His hands. One of my favorite lines, near the end of the book, sums up the book for me in so many ways. “It is true that what is in our heart comes out of our mouth, but it is also true that what we speak out of mouths will get into our hearts.” Our thoughts are connected to our words, and our words reveal what we keep within our heart.Broken into four sections with multiple chapters in each, The Mind Connection breaks down how to look within and outside of ourselves. Each chapter is set up in a similar fashion, providing stories and Scripture to provide evidence to her argument. Knowing that Meyer is a gifted speaker, I read each chapter as though she were speaking directly to me, hearing the emphasis on certain words, the stories becoming sharper, and going away from a chapter eager to start the next one.Throughout the book, I was able to reflect on my own thoughts, and how my words affected either my own actions, or how I reacted to those around me. This did cause my mind to wander – which is one of the things she speaks of! – but I was able to reign myself back in, taking notes along the way or dotting down where to go back to in the book.Part of the book’s charm is that it does not appear to be intended to just be read straight through. Each chapter is its own work. While she may reflect back on a story or issue she had spoken of previously, it is not necessary to read it straight through; and it provides a good reference when you feel you thoughts starting to tangle up again! The Mind Connection works to get to the heart of why we think the way we do, and how those thoughts are connected to our feelings about ourselves, and others. Or how our internal thoughts are connected to our external characteristics. Meyer’s book gives good food for thought, and practical situations to help clear our thoughts, and work with God to become the person he knows us to be.

If you could travel through time and space, what would that power do to you—to your soul? Imprisoned and left to die during WWII, American G.I. Floyd Sandburg finds what could be deliverance in the form of an ancient artifact, the Lens, which allows him to traverse time and space. After catching the attention of the Organization, a mysterious group that may run governments from behind the scenes on Earth, Floyd uses the Lens and crash-lands in an incredibly strange world. Separated from the Lens, Floyd must evade capture and a gruesome death at the hands of hedonistic, bloodthirsty giants and the extra-dimensional entities who control them…the same who run the sinister Organization. Floyd’s very soul hangs in the balance as he is thrown into the middle of a conflict spanning ages. He questions reality, convinced he is dreaming while suffering a slow death in that Nazi prison. Can his brother, Chase, convince him what is real and help him find the truth in time to save not only Earth, but his own soul? “What has been, will be...” Whichever path he takes, his choice will have consequences of Biblical proportion.

The Thief and the Sacrifice, by Kevin C. Bennett

About the Author Head spinning in a caffeinated fugue, Kevin Bennett once found himself shredding down a Martian ski slope with a thousand irate Nephilim howling in his wake. On the way, he rescued twenty damsels, had lunch, and fully calculated Pi. In close company, he goes by “Rip’t Mikchete.” But he moonlights as an accordion-bearing comedian with an eye patch and a beret, who goes by “French Accent.” Sometimes he has trouble remembering who he is on what day, which has predicated the need for a good journal. Though what shows up inside that journal sometimes ends up getting published; like with Drabblecast, his story “2135: The Year Disco Came Back” headlining their ‘B-Sides’ segment. He has a piece published through Amphetamine Blue Press, another distributed by Escape Clause magazine, a story in issue number five of Abandoned Towers Magazine, is published with Bewildering Stories, Neonbeam Magazine, Clockwise Cat, Perpetual Magazine, The Short Humour Site, LitSnack, Print Static Movement, The Fringe Magazine, and in several issues of Golden Visions Magazine. He lives in Colorado, apparently.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. for good or evil By James Walker Trapped in a dark cell in a dusty cave in Afghanistan, WWII GI Floyd Sandburg has been abandoned by his Nazi captors, left to slowly die alone. But destiny has other plans for him, and, as his ultimate despair closes in, an ancient artifact enables him to teleport to his family’s summer home in Georgia. Meanwhile, the journal of a man known only as “Pike” describes his life-journey over decades—first as an agent for the early Bureau of Investigation, sniffing out alien hybrids who are part of a secret society on Earth called the Organization—and then how he eventually joins the Organization to destroy it from the inside, losing his humanity in the process. But are the competing Organization leaders, mind-benders Azazael and Ben’Thor, really aliens...or demons.Floyd discovers his parents are dead and his brother Chase is in a mental institution. And, unbeknownst to Floyd, the Organization has had a hand in it all. He visits Chase, who thinks Floyd is just another alien concocted from his madness. Floyd is trying to make sense of all this when the artifact transports him to another world...one with a prehistoric climate, giants and super-giants and dinosaurs and pterodactyl-riders and zeppelins and wonders beyond belief. But back at home, the Organization wants to recover the transporting artifact Floyd has, which is known as the Lens and figures prominently in its planned conquest of the world. As Floyd struggles to survive in the prehistoric world, known as Atlantea, it is revealed Azazael and Ben’Thor are the exalted leaders there and that Azazael is in the process of having the original Lens constructed. But how could it exist already? Through harrowing escapes and adventures, Floyd navigates this world of giants, making allies, and sets off a revolution between those controlled by the demons and those loyal to the Creator. But through all this, Floyd is convinced it is all in his imagination...and that he is still dying in the cave in Afghanistan: “I am the dreamer.” Therefore, though he does have to play by the rules of his dream, he feels his choices in it, for good or evil, do not really matter. It all comes to a head when Floyd returns to his own world. The Organization, demons, hybrids, the newly-formed FBI, Pike, Chase and others are embroiled in a struggle around and for the Lens...and prophecy, destiny and history will play out in biblical proportions. With an incredibly visual, captivating style, the author deftly transports us through worlds inside and outside the mind and from one age to another. High-minded, evil or self-serving, the vivid and captivating characters spring to life in a variety of forms, including human, hybrid, alien, giant and dinosaur. And the lead characters, especially Floyd, must struggle with their own interpretations of right and wrong—and how their choices will affect their souls, those they care about, and the eternal struggle between good and evil.Whether suspenseful and eerie or rapid-fire and explosive, the action is riveting, and the dialogue on-point and distinctive to each character. Description slides easily between the colorful and philosophical, colloquial and astounding, and often touches the artistic.Fans of sci-fi, adventure and fantasy will enjoy this roller coaster ride of arching suspense, dizzying action, and corkscrew turns through theology, time and human nature.

Floyd Sandburg is left stranded in a cave after his capture from the Nazis in Afghanistan during WWII. Sometime after his capture Floyd discovers an ancient pen sized artefact that has the power to help him escape and transport him to place to place, location to location and time zone to time zone. Floyd finds himself in a struggle that has been in place since evolution and his only chances of survival are to avoid capture as the ongoing threat of a horrifying death awaits him if he fails to save Earth and his own soul in time as he questions what will be required of him in the coming days? Unaware that his entire salvation lies within the artefact and his choices will have considerable consequences of a theological magnitude.Bennett successfully weaves two unique tales together that will give the reader a real insight into what a person with good morals may do when they are given too much power. The other tale gives the reader some idea of what the world may have been like before the deluge of Genesis. I would definitely recommend this book to fans of Sci-fi and fantasy, and to anyone who enjoys a highly imaginative story with strong characters, places and events that’s rooted in reality, theology and human nature. My Ranking: 5 Stars

The once beautiful earth is now nearly dead. No winds blow - the weather never changes. Filling every valley and all the low lands, acidic clouds the color of cinnamon lay heavy as they have for the past 50 years. Where the red cloud meets the mountains is known as redline; nothing lives below redline. Without protective clothing and breathable air you will quickly die below redline. Only a few merchants and traders scavenge below redline. Because of the deadly atmosphere, people now call the Earth: ACID.

The remains of mankind live in cities clinging to the highest mountain peaks. These cities provide meager residence. Travel is limited to dangerous hydrogen filled airships. The world has changed but men's lust for pleasure has not. Preying on isolated pockets of humanity are pirates who deal in human slavery for pleasure.

Twenty-four year old Noah Palatin has sworn revenge against the pirates who murdered his father and commandeered his father's unique airship. His quest brings him in league with new found friends who become his family. Together they battle their way through adventures and strike a blow against the sex pirates. Unexpectedly, his adventure takes him into his heart as well.

Wanted the story to just go on and on By Alindenver Finally made time to read ACID last week ... amazing story, could hardly put it down but "life" got in the way so had to spread it out over three days. It's a tale that makes you feel like you're one of the characters and can't wait for the next day of unexpected twists and turns to start. What a great adventure but, I still felt sad the story seemed to end so soon ... I just wanted it to go on and on. Even though I knew where the last chapter was leading me, I couldn't stop the tears from falling as the final pages brought this wonderful story to an end. I don't read much fiction any more but, I sure recommend this one.

Nice to see a book in a post-apocalyptic setting that is neither preachy nor depressing. I spent most of the book thinking that it would make a perfect Miyazaki film. You hear that, Studio Ghibli? I demand an anime!

Heard about it a while ago, finally got time to read it. Hated to put it down to go to work. I love the author's sense of humor. And the plot twists kept me enthralled.

Captain Blood, by Rafael Sabatini

From Library Journal This title is immediately recognizable as the basis for Michael Curtiz's 1935 film starring Errol Flynn. At the time of its 1922 debut, however, the book was a smash hit and was followed up with additional adventures of swashbuckler Peter Blood in numerous sequels. A salty dose of high-seas adventure for all fiction collections, this is the most affordable edition currently available.Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review "Confident, dramatic sweep, and an unfailing boldness of romantic colour."  —London Times"He was born with a gift of laughter and a sense that the world was mad." —Sabatinis' epitaph "First-class storytelling."  —Library Journal

Entertainment on Every Page By Jeffrey Leach Rafael Sabatini struggled for years as a writer before striking it big with his fabulous historical fiction stories. His breakthrough, according to the elaborate introduction written by Gary Hoppenstand, came with "Scaramouche: A Romance of the French Revolution" in 1921. Immediately following this novel was "Captain Blood: An Odyssey." These two books alone sealed Sabatini's success with an audience hungry for adventure tales. Hoppenstand argues that Sabatini's fictional endeavors fed an increasing appetite amongst low level industrial workers for stories that placed the little guy against the vested interests (in this case, a wronged man turns pirate and fights back against upper class nobles and landowners), but the story works just as well as an adventure story. Penguin Classics has graciously reprinted "Captain Blood" for the modern reader, and deserves a hearty round of applause for bringing this great yarn to our attention. The only thing Irishman Peter Blood wants is to be left alone. A trained physician living in Bridgewater, England in the 17th century, Blood spends his days healing the sick, smoking his pipe, and reminiscing about his ten-year stint as an adventurer throughout Europe. When the Duke of Monmouth organizes a rebellion against the tyranny of James Stuart, the King of England, Blood refuses to have anything to do with it despite suffering the abuse of those locals who wholeheartedly support the campaign. Blood's undoing comes when he assists an injured rebel after the royal army crushes the upstarts. Blood sees no contradiction in offering aid to an injured man, but the English soldiers who arrest him insist he is a traitor to the Stuart monarchy. They charge Blood for his "crimes" and sentence him to death by hanging. After commuting the sentence to ten years of slavery on the island of Barbados, the English transport Blood and a few rebels into the hands of the treacherous Colonel Bishop, a sugar plantation owner and a ruthless thug who sees nothing wrong with using stocks, whips, and other threatening devices to control his slaves. The story rapidly takes off from this point, as Blood escapes and embarks on a career as a pirate. He raids Spanish treasure ships in the Caribbean while pining for Bishop's pretty niece Arabella. Sabatini introduces us to a whole host of despicable characters, from Spanish Admiral Don Esteban, a French pirate named Lavasseur, and a French general named Rivarol who all present a threat to Peter at one time or another. Blood dupes them all through a series of adventures on sea and land. Through it all this Irish pirate never loses sight of his goals: to clear his name and return to England, and to woo Arabella Bishop. The most notable aspect of this novel is the writing style employed by Sabatini. This guy really knows how to tell a tale, and his language is rich, ornate, and deeply descriptive. His technique seems more 19th century than early 20th. The texture of Sabatini's language adds considerably to the story without becoming too overweening. In a time when language became more functional and therefore less complex, Sabatini strove for authenticity by using older words and lengthier terminology. It works, and it works well in a chronicle about 17th century pirates by making the reader feel as though this story really is from another time.Sabatini also wrote historical biographies about the Spanish Inquisition and Cesare Borgia, which give Sabatini the knowledge to place Blood in the proper historical context. The year 1688 makes an appearance towards the end of the story, and if you know anything about what happened in England at that time you can probably figure out what implications it had for Peter Blood. In short, this blending of the real and the imaginary continually shapes the events in the novel, thus making the story more realistic. The references to real life people also give the book a halo of respectability.A few improbabilities mar the otherwise pristine veneer of "Captain Blood." There are certain battles that take place on the high seas that would make it impossible for Blood to accomplish the sort of things he pulls off. The total evilness of the pirate captain's foes presents a few problems as well. The Spanish Admiral Don Esteban, for example, assumes a Captain Ahab like attitude towards Blood after the pirate repeatedly defies the Spanish fleet. It seems unlikely that Esteban would resort to blatant piracy himself to seek personal revenge against one criminal. Despite these few small problems, the story's great style, engaging adventures, and historical accuracy builds a yarn both fascinating and entertaining.I was about half way through the book before I realized that this is my first pirate adventure novel. What a way to start! I enjoyed it thoroughly on a purely entertainment level, and after reading one book by Rafael Sabatini I would definitely read another. "Captain Blood" is a great way to pass a few hours and undeniably beats spending a like amount of time watching mindless sitcoms on television.

His stories are full of swashbuckling and high adventure. I hadn't read Captain Blood for a while, so I took it out of the library. I remembered how much I loved it, so I went down to the book store to order it in hardback to add to my collection. Imagine my surprise to discover that it may be library binding, but not edition. The book has been edited. Whole scenes cut that sometimes may seem incidental when they occur, but actually contribute in some way to the character development and choices made by the character. I would not advise buying this edition if you are a fan of the book. If you have seen the movie and just want to know what the book was really like, there is enough in there to give the flavor. But I advise all Sabatini fans to avoid it and look for an unabridged copy.

39 of 39 people found the following review helpful. one of my all-time favorite books By Linda I have read Captain Blood many times. I enjoy it more each time. It is a masterpiece of swashbuckling adventure and romance. Maybe it is because it was written in 1935, but it is so nice to read stories that do not have gratuitous sex scenes added or a lot of graphic violence. The language is much more flowery than what we normally get in today's novels.I wish someone would do a remake of Captain Blood, the movie. The Errol Flynn movie is still good, but with today's special effects, it could be really good if they didn't ruin it like Disney ruined the Pirates of the Caribbean movies with too much absurdity. The books are great though.By the way, there are two sequels of this book. They do not take place after this book, but are more adventures that would have been during the time of this story, but didn't get put into this book because it would have been a lot more pages. These sequels are both as enjoyable as this book to read.Since all of Rafael Sabatini's books are now in the public domain, one great perk for people who have a Kindle or an iPhone with a Kindle app, you can get these books for free as eBooks.

With their numbers diminishing and the alien armies growing stronger, Sophie's biosphere decides to join forces with the team from NTC's submarine. Using data from a surviving satellite, they discover strange, alien poles at each of the world's seven highest summits: alien technology that the survivors believe may hold the key to shutting down the alien ships once and for all. That's not all, the satellite also reveals an encrypted set of coordinates that reveal SOS messages from US Military bases around the world, all activated on invasion day - except for one: Offutt Air Force Base. But before the two teams can launch an offensive, the biosphere must deal with sabotage from within and a strange nanotechnology that has infected several of the survivors.

As tensions rise, Sophie and team must decide whether a new discovery at Offutt is worth abandoning the biosphere. The more the team learns, the more they realize the planet may be beyond saving and that salvation may require leaving the planet forever.

The alien water 'guzzlers' continue to suck it up; sailors in a sub get sucked in; and the resilience of the few remaining humans continues to astound the survivors. The year is 2060. Ninety five percent of the earth's population is gone. The water levels in both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans are shrinking to a catastrophic level. Alexia, the AI in the Biosphere with Doctors Rodriguez and Winston discovers a functioning satellite. Lolo provides images that are both incredible and astounding in nature. The images are shared with Captain Noble on board the NTC sub and they may provide the answers to the annihilation of the aliens on the Planet Earth. This is one exhilarating journey that is action packed with medical mysteries, evolving nanobots, AI's that appear to have a hint of human intelligence (not possible, or is it?) and Jeff and David (those adorable surviving brothers). How much is a human capable of absorbing before their breaking point is reached? Battle is on for Planet Earth in earnest. There are limited supplies, limited personnel but there is an overwhelming desire to win that burns deeply within these survivors. Most interesting read for me and I actually felt empathy for Alexia when she verbalized her ultimate decision to the team of the Biosphere. A fast paced book that will keep you turning the pages. Strong characters also contribute to the story line. The author is excellent with his descriptions both human and alien. I also got thirsty while reading this book just thinking about a diminishing water supply and its effect on the world. Most highly recommended.Note to author: I didn't notice a paperback available for purchase. Any plans in the future for one? Lots of people I know are older and like a book in their hands to read! Thanks.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. That's It? Really? By Paul (This review contains many spoilers, so be warned.)This series has been one long, dismal journey, and the ending fell flat on its face. All along, our heroes have gone from one miserable hopeless situation to another, with no relief in sight. I kept hoping there would be some kind of win for these poor people, but it was not to be. There were so many inconsistencies, contradictions, tired tropes, and things that just plain didn't make sense, that I can't list them all, so here are a few:They Came Here For Our Water.Stop it. This trope has been done to death. It didn't make sense in the original "V" (among many other stories) and it doesn't make sense here. Why bother pulling water up out of a gravity well like Earth when you could have all the water you could possibly want elsewhere? The rings of Saturn are almost entirely water ice, among other places. On Interstellar travel.Interstellar? Interstellar? They had an "interstellar" craft and they use it to go to MARS? Seriously? That word you keep using, I do not think it means what you think it means. On The Hoffman Mars Colony.Ahh, the much-referred-to-but-never-seen "Hoffman Mars Colony", Isn't that where the Organics came from? Wouldn't they presumably have squeezed Mars dry of all water as well? NO amount of magic terraforming can fix that. Also, who's to say the Organics abandoned their planet entirely? Might not there have been some Organics left on Mars? Did no one consider that? In which case it was foolish at best to decide to start a new human colony on the planet/former planet of their enemy. On InterPLANETARY travel.Ok, so I'm sure the Sunspot, like the Segundo Caso before it, will have a boring uneventful journey to Mars. NOT. Hello? Interplanetary space between Earth and Mars is teaming with highly advanced "multi-dimensional" beings and their ships, known to be extremely hostile. Their not going to notice one or two completely defenseless human ships heading to Mars?On the Organics.Ok, make up your mind. Either the "organics" came from Mars and decided to drain water from the next planet over (Earth) before continuing their rampage through the rest of the galaxy, OR they're "multi-dimensional" and have traveled to a thousand worlds gathering specimens from each. If the latter, why stop at Earth now? Earth should have been the first planet they milked thousands of years ago before they began their "multi-dimensional" travels. Any history of the Organics seems inconsistent. The "visions" some characters had during their visits to the Black Ships were yet another wasted opportunity to possibly communicate with the aliens or at least get some kind of motivation or understanding of their overall intentions and goals. Instead, they became cardboard cutout bad guys.Finally.There were some good things here. The human character development, the vivid descriptions of the Organics and their technology. The biosphere detail. Alexa the AI's beginning steps into self awareness. Even this came to nothing, as she ended up becoming a glorified tape recorder for the end of human history. If you're going to require a reader to spend a lot of time in your world, at least give them some resolution for their efforts. This series fell short of that.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Five Well-Earned Stars By Loves To Read More action. More aliens. More suspense. And I literally couldn't put it down.I was so glad I didn't have to wait years between each book in the Orbs series. I don't think I would have had the strength to last much longer than I had to to get my hands on Redemption.Without giving too much away, I can honestly say I really enjoyed how Smith ended the series. I'm a sucker for a good HEA, but I think he ended the series perfectly. A true testament to the message I believe he was trying to weave within the lines of each book. Because as much as I think Orbs 1-3 were easy-to-read, hard-to-put-down thrillers, at the end of the day, I believe Smith was attempting to whisper caution to us as a species. Take care of our resources. Be prepared. And take care of each other. And as for the HEA, I'm not sure we're going to get one in real life so the fact that Smith gave us a REALISTIC ending gives credence to the entire series. Well done! Can't wait to see what this amazing author comes up with next!!!

A cracking good read By The Reviewer Formerly Known as Kurt Johnson George Alfred Henty (1832-1902) is largely forgotten today, but prior to World War II he had many young fans of his adventure books. Muscular fiction at its exciting best, Henty’s stories follow a brave and upright young man through a series of adventures during great historical happenings (usually great happenings of British history). This book is a collection of five of Henty’s short stories, ranging the world from India to China to the wilds of the California Gold Rush. Exciting stories from another era, this book is a cracking good read. Necessary addition to any yoga/chakra library By Rose Kress Psychologist and yogin Anodea Judith is an amazing resource when it comes to the chakra system. Her first book, Wheels of Life: A User’s Guide to the Chakra System, has become a yoga classic. Now she has released a book specific to hatha yoga practice using the chakras. This is a great resource for individuals who may wish to focus their practice on a specific chakra, as well as a manual for teachers who wish to lead a chakra yoga practice. Chakra Yoga can be used by novices who would like to learn about the chakras, experienced practitioners looking for ideas or perspective, and everyone in between. To put everyone on the same page, Judith gives a concise and thorough explanation of the chakras.Judith gives a short introduction, where she introduces the reader to her personal and professional experience with chakras. She then places the chakras into the context of yoga (some may have encountered chakras at the new age store and not know their yogic origins). Yoga means “to yoke,” or hitch two things together and Judith says, “the chakra system is the architecture of that yoke, providing a comprehensive map to the way the mortal and the Divine yoke together.” The goal of the chakra, yoga, and LifeForce Yoga is wholeness and integration. The chakra system “provides both a ladder for liberation and a map for manifestation.” Understanding our chakras and integrating this knowledge into our practices, allows us to have a deeper experience of focus and unfolding. Each chapter is devoted to a specific chakra and begins with a chart of the basic principles of that chakra. These principles include things like associated element, body parts, practices, actions, deficiencies, balances, etc. Judith identifies a keyword for each chakra, which is elaborated upon in the discussion of basic concepts that follows. As an example, the keyword for Manipura, third chakra, is activate, through the cultivation of fire (agni) in the body. This concept of activation through fire is put into context with a discussion of the underlying yogic philosophy with sources from the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and the Bhagavad Gita. The author then grounds this discussion into an experience, pelvic pulsing for the second chakra, uddiyana bandha (energy lock) for the third chakra, etc. The energy practice is followed by a meditative experience, a subtle energy exploration of the chakra. The chapter continues with a yoga posture flow. Judith states in the introduction that there is no substitute for a skilled teacher and since this is not a comprehensive yoga pose manual, she has made some wonderful adjustments. Postures have a basic set of step by step instructions and readers are asked to follow them in order without omission. Guidelines are given for further instruction, as well as benefits and cautions. At the end of the chapter, a posture flow is given with the names of the poses and a small photograph. The selection of which postures to include is not easy as postures influence more than one chakra at a time, or variations of the same pose, or a shift in focus, may impact a different chakra. For this reason, Judith states, “some of the basic poses will appear in more than one chakra.” Of special note: the author provides a four pose partner yoga sequence in the heart chakra chapter.Judith provides a specific relaxation and focus for each chakra. For example, the focus of relaxation for the fifth chakra (visshudha at the throat) is on “listening to the subtle variations coursing throughout the whole body.” The relaxation focus for the first chakra (muladhara at the base of the spine) is on feeling the solidity of the body and receiving nourishment from the earth.Judith is adept at writing about complex concepts from yoga philosophy so that they are easy to understand and yet lose none of their richness. Chakra Yoga contains ample opportunities to experience energy, movement, and stillness. It belongs on the shelf of every yoga/chakra enthusiast.

By CYNDI MORRIS This book is such a great resource, as a yoga teacher I have referred to the information provided many times. I am creating sequences for my students that are even more dynamic, Anodea's knowledge of the Chakra system and her explanation of yoga poses that speak to those areas is so helpful. The life of a lonely middle-aged grandmother is disrupted by a series of murders surrounding her grandson's play group in a gripping and remarkable mystery treasure from CWA Gold Dagger winner Peter Dickinson Poppy Tasker never imagined this would be her life at age fifty: divorced, living alone, and stuck caring for a tiny grandson while his mother is busy seeking public office. Sad and resentful, Poppy feels completely detached from the nannies she's now forced to associate with when she brings little Toby to the park to play. But her discomfort is replaced by a creeping dread when she notices a stranger watching her and the boy a bit too closely-and her fear turns to near panic when the man tries to follow them home. The following day, the stalker is found murdered in the park, his corpse decorated in an odd and troubling manner. Poppy's terror grows as she realizes that she and her innocent grandson have become entangled in something twisted and very dangerous. Then the nanny of one of Toby's playground friends meets an untimely end-and Poppy realizes that this may only be the beginning. One of the true greats of contemporary British crime fiction, Peter Dickinson is often compared to luminaries including Ruth Rendell, Peter Lovesey, P. D. James, and Reginald Hill. Play Dead is a shining example of his storytelling artistry.

Play Dead: A Crime Novel, by Peter Dickinson

From Publishers Weekly Like music lovers listening to a favorite piece conducted by a master, mystery fans will relish Dickinson's ( Skin Deep ) complicated puzzler with its beautifully realized cast. Poppy Tasker, a game and warm-hearted 50-year-old divorcee searching for a life on her own, agrees to baby-sit for her toddler grandson Toby while her Labour Party daughter-in-law pursues a seat in Parliament from their London district. A young man observed watching Toby's play group in the park angers Poppy and the nannies; he is also seen outside Poppy's house the night she comes home with one of the other tots' fathers--a Romanian national whom she met at a concert. When the young man is found murdered in the play center, the nannies come under suspicion, much to Poppy's resentment; meanwhile, as the revolution in Romania looms, she wonders about the involvement of her friend there and in developments closer to home, which come to include the killing of one of the nannies. In the process of untangling a knot of credible coincidence and complex motivation, she also finds fresh direction and a new companion. Mystery Guild alternate. Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews Fifty-ish Poppy Trasker, unhappily divorced and marking time by minding her grandson Toby for her politically-minded daughter-in-law Janet, is asked to identify a dead man found in Toby's play center. To Poppy's alarm, it's the man who had been watching her house and following her and Toby. What connection can the unknown corpse (a child molester?) have to the death of one of the play-group nannies-- or to Poppy's unlikely liaison with John Capstone, husband of Janet's Thatcheresque opponent...or to an international drug-smuggling plot, a cozily aristocratic family, or the impending fall of the Romanian government? In the hands of anybody less than veteran Dickinson, the preposterous reach of this intricate plot would boggle the mind; here, the links between the homely details of Toby's tantrums and the fate of the Ceausescus seem beautifully inevitable. Dickinson's touch is so masterly here that he makes other fine domestic mysteries seem quite amateurish. -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

It is not meant to be funny or frightening, but to draw our attention to life: children, music, relationships, love. In her attempts to understand a murder, Poppy Tasker confronts the choices that have led her to become small-of-spirit. As she comes to understand the forces that led to the murder (as well as the unintended consequences of wrong conclusions about them), she learns what is important to her and becomes "She-who-knows-what-she-wants."

Great mystery, great about relationships By Lazy reviewer Peter Dickinson is one of my favorite mystery authors, and this may be his best book, less because of the mystery than because of the multidimensional, reflective protagonist, a leftish grandmother caring for her grandson while seeking a richer life. The mysterious deaths are nevertheless puzzling [and weird, as usual in Dickinson] and clues for their solution emerge in surprising ways. Admittedly, the web of relationships is a little far-fetched, but their variety lets him comment strikingly on British sociopolitical life in the early 1990s. All of his books might be called social science fiction: he creates very original contexts and then lets the interaction reveal implications as it works itself out. This book is unusually intricately developed; it's a very good read, sometimes suspenseful but more often gripping due to its intriguing creativity. It's a shame this book isn't more available and more frequently reviewed here.

Unfortunately I don't feel it has the intuitive insight it's had in the past. I used to use his annual astrology book as a tool weekly, it was always within my reach. On the coffee table, night stand in the bedroom, and in my work bag. Whenever anyone came over they couldn't put it down. Now I read it just once every 3-4 weeks.
