Sixteen-year-old Tasso Menzies just finished burying his grandfather next to his mother and grandmother on the family farm when he receives an order from his estranged uncle to come to Capital City. He doesn't want to leave the only home he's ever known. He doesn't want to be apprenticed on a space freighter crewed by Texas cowboys of Mexican descent. He certainly doesn't want to be gone for so long that his home and inheritance are stolen. While trying to fit in and still get home he learns what it is like to live in space, what a cheerleader is, how spicy a taco can be, and that Texicans like a good fight as much as he does.

It is a good old-fashioned space opera with good guys vs. bad guys. We have enough action to keep the adventurous entertained, enough romance to keep the lovers diverted, and enough humor to keep the rest of us reading.Tasso Menzies is a 16 year old boy who has had to bury his grandfather, literally! And his only remaining relative sells him off to a space going freighter filled with Texans of Mexican descent. This coming of age story wraps us up as we watch Tasso grows from being a lost young boy to a maturing young adult in unknown and confusing environment. .This is written for all ages, while there is some violence, and brief nudity it is much less than a youngster will see on cable TV. There is minimal cursing and it has been brilliantly written to give the reader a smooth engaging story.

Small town boy makes good By Matthew Ryan Very enjoyable, it seemed as though technology had taken the common sense out of the people running a very lucrative space based enterprise and forgot how to reuse their broken down or tossed out equipment and other items. Now they are stuck with an uneducated kid from some backwater planet to train on their ship to become a crewmember. He must be educated in all aspects of the ship and due to his lack on knowledge they kind of forget about him and he is left to his own devices. The crew is about to find out that he is much more than some backwater hick that knows nothing and can't do anything useful.

Guerin Strong character development, but a predictable and at times somewhat repetitive storyline (I was ready to drop the book after reading for the nth times how the multi-pupose "extruder" that our hero located in the spaceship attic saved the day by producing one more set of unique ribbons ... this may not make sense, but if you read the book, you'll quickly get what I'm referring to).The story starts planet-side after our hero just lost his grandfather who had raised him on the family farm. He undertakes a trip to the main city to his only remaining family, his uncle, and quickly find himself shipped onto a spaceship where the bulk of the story takes place. The spaceship is little more than a "small town" substitute, and there is little if anything in terms of space specific details. The bulk of the story deals with the challenges our hero faces (and always overcomes) in getting acquainted with a drastically new environment. The book's main strength is that the characters are well developed with many personable and realistic interactions, but that's about it. The rest is pretty mundane. I kept waiting for the unexpected, but it never came. This remained a pleasant read, but now that I know what to expect, I'll probably pass on the following volumes that were clearly in the waiting given how the book ends.
