By Paul McDaniel God has gifted Brian with wisdom and common sense when dealing with children, and even sometimes with older children whom we call adults. I actually didn't buy a book, I bought 4 books, one for each of my children who have children of their own and one for my wife and myself. I really couldn't wait to get them bought, I especially needed one for my son's widow. He passed away last year from cancer, and though she is very strong in faith, my son was her rock and she was struggling without him. More importantly, my grandkids were struggling. Brian addresses so much concerning these issue in Chapter 2, Death and Tragedy. Some we, his widow and myself, know, but it certainly helped seeing how Brian spoke to those most sensitive issues, and also gave us additional ways of looking at them. And frankly some issues I just had not given any thought to, and then later speaking to his widow, neither had she. My other kids have already put some steps into action, what with one child struggling with self image and as a result making poor choices, and another one struggling with friendship issues. There is just so much in this book, and as stated children don't come with a user manual. I highly recommend that you get your hands on this book to begin using it as the new user manual for kids. By the way, you don't have to be religious to benefit from this book (though personally it does help).

Autry Excellent Book for Parents and Kidmin Leaders I purchased a Pre-release copy of Talk Now and Later. Brian Dollar has written a valuable and much needed resource for parents and all who minister to children. I was impressed with his extensive use of the Bible in dealing with “Life’s Tough Topics.” Dollar gives general principles to follow when talking with children about ten BIG ISSUES that children and their families face throughout life. He also gives specifics and case examples for each of the issues. I was currently interested in the chapter on “Death and Tragedy” because a family in my church are facing terminal cancer of the father. I will be sharing this resource with the mother. In this chapter, Dollar gives ten general guidelines to follow for any type of tragedy or death, discusses suicide, includes the five stages of grief, and then gives insights into knowing what stage of grief a child is in. Here are some quotes from this chapter that I found most helpful. “Allow children to process the loss in their way and at their pace.” (97) “Grieving together is perhaps the most powerful and recuperative part of the healing process.” (94) In speaking of the grieving process, “Many parents presume their kid’s progress will mirror their own, but that’s seldom the case.” (107) This book will be a go-to resource in my ministry to children and their families. And as an added benefit, the reader is lead to a website for additional resources. A real bonus!
