More than a decade after claiming Nottingham Castle and founding his Rangers, Rob Stokes – the Hooded Man – has seen off Britain’s would-be conquerors, thrown his support behind the newly-restored Crown, and extended his peacekeeping force onto the Continent. He’s getting old, getting ready to hand over to his adopted son, Mark, feeling like retiring. Trouble is brewing in the newly peaceful Britain. King Jack’s soldiers go armed with guns and armoured vehicles, even as Stokes’ Rangers disarm the people. A resistance movement is rising, led by the charismatic Virgil Sorin. Amidst the rioting, shots are fired. A fire is about to start...

Unlike the previous three though (Arrowhead, Broken Arrow and Arrowland) this is an ebook novella as opposed to a full length novel. That is not a bad thing as this 100-or-so page tale fits enough story and action in that it does feel like a full length novel – and there is a short story included as well (more on this later). The story is set some years after the events in the original trilogy, which was itself set in the near future after The Cull had decimated the population and the world was turning to a second Dark Age. Robert Stokes (The Hooded Man) and his family and friends are firmly ensconced in Nottingham Castle, while his peace-keeping force is doing just that both at home in Europe but as you would expect, there are forces at play trying to take control and take any power back from Robert and the new King. There is a lot going on here as I said before and I am limited to what I can tell you because….well, y’know…..spoilers! Sufficient to say though Paul Kane makes a great job of carrying on the story and setting up quite a few possibilities for future stories. The tale is very Robin Hood based but is not a direct futuristic retelling, more a reimagining of the legend. I guess some of the action scenes are a bit over the top in places but, hey, it’s an action packed work of fiction – it’s supposed to be a bit OTT at times. And then we move on to the short story at the end, “A Dream Of Sherwood”. Again, difficult to talk about this without dropping spoilers but I really enjoyed it and had to stop for a second when I realised what I was reading. You may well be surprised too.Verdict: The Robin Hood story has been a big thing for me for as long as I can remember so I am always wary when people start meddling with it but with Paul Kane’s Hooded Man series he has done a great job…..and Flaming Arrow is an excellent addition to the series. Highly recommended. 9/10this review first appeared on www.scfibullettin

Holly was a young P.I. trying to solve her first major case, a kidnapping of her best friend. Through a comedy of errors and mishaps, she came up with a list of suspects. She is fighting relatives to keep her position as a P.I. and her father's rather poor reputation. Overall, it is a light fun read. I look forward to the next book in the series.I received the book from the Book Club Network in exchange for my honest opinion.

By Babbling Becky L One of my favorite types of books, a cozy mystery with lots of romantic suspense, I thoroughly enjoyed Anne Greene's first book of the Handcuffed in Texas series. An over-the-top Valentine's banquet for rich, young professionals provides the start for this fast paced book which takes off with a sudden bang and never slows down. Holly Garden, the hapless heroine, is serving security at said banquet when her best friend is kidnapped.Holly has her work cut out for her. She must fight the police department's animosity towards her deceased father and clear his tarnished name. She must figure out whether handsome Stryker is for or against her. Holly also needs to convince her uncle that she can find Matt faster than her rival at the family detective agency. Last but not least, Holly needs to survive while doing all this.I really enjoyed this fast-paced tale of twists and turns. The references to Scripture and the some of characters' solid beliefs were encouraging or convicting. At one point Temple says,"I'm the daughter of the King...and so are you.""Mostly,I think of myself as Dad's daughter. A crusader with a soiled name."(Holly)" 'Take your pick.' Temple's tone indicated there was no contest between the choices." How true! We are who we think we are, just as the Bible says,"As a man thinks in his heart, so is he."A great cast of quirky characters, (gotta love Grandma!)fast adventure, some spiritual truths, and an ending that will leave you begging for the next book..definitely a winner!!I received this book from bookfun.org in exchange for an honest review.

By Harold Wolf Holly has to make good on her first real assignment, and the boss only gives her 24 hours to solve the mysterious kidnapping of one of their own PIs. As a tag-along helper with her Dad's former PI jobs, she sort of made a name for herself. It only got worse when her Dad was killed, and blamed for murder and drug dealing. Coming off her own personal romantic crisis, Holly's off men forever, and strong on getting the job done, FAST. And the action begins and carries on fast during this case. There is a couple of hunk PIs what find Holly attractive, but can she avoid their charms in the name of `getting her case closed?' Sounds like a romance book, right? Not so. Well some so, but it's primarily a mystery that trickles into suspense. I've read other Anne Greene books and it's never just a love story, it's never just a mystery, it's never just simple, it is always a complex multi-plot story that draws readers in, like a Glock to an ankle holster. This is Christian fiction, and Holly has a strong faith, counting on it to keep her safe and to help people. Imagine a private eye that prays for results, and people, good and evil.Good for any age reader that likes a bit of action with their mystery. And the ending leaves some unanswered relationships that beg for a read of book #2 of this series, when it is available. Soon, I hope.

Graham Theakston is a journalist in East Africa just before independence. He’s a bit of a hack, a bit of a boozer, smokes too much and is bullied by both his white boss and his black wife. Despite this, he bumbles along, until a rebel leader takes offence at an article he's written for the local rag. Katife is a book of often dark humour set in a time when Imperialism was going out of fashion, leaving former colonies looking for a new political identity and for new rulers. Any money I make from selling the book is being donated to the charity War Child, though I've kept the price to a minimum in the hope that readers like the book enough to make their own donations and pass the word.

Kitafe melds politics with history in a suspenseful story of post-colonial Africa By Rod Raglin I want to thank Michael Ray for his hard work and commitment to this worthy endeavor.East Africa in 1962. The British influence is on the wane. The power vacuum is in jeopardy of being filled by Henry Ngai, a messianic, megalomaniac and leader of the The Army of Christ’s Inquisition.Graham Theakston is an ex-pat Brit working as a reporter on a daily newspaper in the crumbling colony. He’s a hack, a drunk, chronically broke, low on ethics and ambition.Theakston not unwittingly becomes a pawn of the powerful as major players jockey for position. But when his wife and best friend are murdered by Ngai supporters he changes from a cynical, opportunistic side-liner to a person bent on revenge. His assassination attempt on Ngai is foiled, he’s captured, drugged, tortured and brainwashed. Theakston becomes Ngai’s scribe writing his manifesto, his philosophy and his press releases. Slowly the humanity still buried within him emerges. He becomes aware of the atrocities, the corruption, the madness and the evil specifically in Ngai’s indoctrination process changing children into psychopathic killers. He escapes and begins a long and treacherous journey through the jungle back to civilization, a journey that's transformative not only geographically, but spiritually and morally.Theakston survives and arrives back in the capital only to find the British are about to hand over power to his nemesis.Michael Ray has written an exciting, fast-paced story. The plot has a well-research authenticity to it and though complicated is believable and without glitches. The dialogue is natural and cleverly written with lots of British stiff upper-lip expressions and attitudes that reflect the times. Ray’s characters are genuine and well developed mostly through action rather than reflection. This booked works as a historical snapshot, a moral dilemma, and an entertaining work of fiction.I downloaded this novel free from Smashwords as part of my commitment to review new, self-published authors.

It hooked me from the first page and I couldn't put it down. It's full of twist and turns, drama, action, steamy romance, suspense, and even a murder. I loved the chemistry between Dylan and Sarah. I thoroughly enjoyed this intriguing book and would highly recommend it. You need to read the first one too. You will love them. There is a cliffhanger, but let's hope Joseph's book comes out soon. I can't wait. I received this book as a gift for an honest review. Patsy Sacco

In the previous books we've come to expect excitement and the unexpected. The Billionaire's Affair does not disappoint. Twists and turns and a powerful love story keeps you wanting more. In this book be prepared to be surprised. You will have to figure out who's really bad and who's really good! The Quinlan brothers and their loved ones are funny, sweet, sexy, strong and fierce. I've said it before and I'll say it again: 'This series is Julie Farrell's best'! I've given it 5 stars because as a reader and lover of books, The Billionaire's Affair gives you everything you could ask for. Great love, action, suspense, sexy men, and a storyline that keeps you interested ad entertained. I eagerly await the next installment of the Tycoon Billionaires series.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. enjoyable read By Heather's Reviews Dylan Quinlan is in London running Grafton Tech, which the brothers acquired in Book 1. Dylan enjoys the ladies but somehow, this time he picked the wife of Russian tycoon Vladimir Orlov. Natalia Orlov and Dylan are being threatened in a hotel room when the hotel manager Sarah hears the noise. As luck would have it, Sarah is Dylan’s college girlfriend and the only one he’s truly loved. Unfortunately, sometimes life gets in the way and true love isn’t enough. Dylan had put Sarah on a plane home after graduation so that she could take care of family issues after the death of her father. They both feel like the other has walked away and neither of them is really ready to give each other a second chance.I enjoyed the twist and turns of this story and the continuation from book 1. I would not try to read these out of order, as there’s too much back story that matters going forward. My one concern is that if you read book 1 and go straight to book 2, is that the two books felt too similar. I did read a couple of other books before going on to book 3. The similarities were not enough to take me away from the series, just remember to space them out a little more.

Witness at first-hand a group of specialist investigators, as they set up and run a new, innovative crime fighting agency. They are dedicated to the resolution of criminal cases using paranormal assistance. This will be a new, innovative and emerging brand of policing designed to protect the citizens of our country. Read how they deal with the anti-social, disturbed behavior of a wayward, divorced husband, who is on the verge of destroying the lives of his ex-wife and their two young sons. Read how they identify the members of a murderous ring of pedophiles from relatively few clues, and bring them to justice. Read how they move from ineffectively resolving one case at a time, and onto tackling multiple cases with far more beneficial results to society. Read thereafter how they clear the penitentiaries of criminals, starting with the most dangerous inmates, using novel means to cleanse their souls of sin, and equip them for new roles in life in special clearing centers. The objective is to reintegrate them into society, rendered capable of performing straightforward tasks and genuinely purified, via the novel process of atonement. Read how they find one talented young man who was lost, presumed dead, and reunite him with his family. Thereafter, as agents of change, they help launch him on the path to stardom. This is not a simple, gory, two dimensional book, but an exploration into the timely use of mediums in crime detection. It can pay dividends in assisting the fight against crime. They use the latest techniques and technology in a future world that is not far removed from that which exists today.

The Deaduction Agency (The Dreadnought Collective Book 4), by Terry Tumbler

Review By Grady Harp HALL OF FAMETOP 100 REVIEWER VINE VOICE Terry Tumbler (his moniker for writing) now lives and writes in Spain since retiring from the corporate world of the computer industry. Terry Tumbler is a first class humorist. He also happens to be able to write well and with extraordinary imagination. He starts his book with a Foreword that offers cases of psychics and his fascination with their abilities. And there begins a completely original take on investigators - `Witness at first-hand a group of specialist investigators, as they set up and run a new agency, dedicated to the resolution of criminal cases using paranormal assistance.' Terry creates wonderfully painted characters - from sexy women to dowdy ones, frumpy old crusts and dashing ones - each requiring investigations of various types that require (or are enhanced by) paranormal (psychic etc) assistance. Many twists and turns in this `mystery novel' but the overall story matches Terry's unique style of humor. Prepare for a rollicking ride in this top-drawer new book. We'll be hearing more from this author!

By Marta Cheng The Deaduction Agency is not only the name of the book but is also the fledgling enterprise headed by partners/lovers Honey and Richard as well as two other partners. All of the agency partners have certain aptitudes (or gifts, depending on one’s beliefs) and the purpose of the agency is to conduct paranormal investigations into unresolved murders. Things look hopeful when the agency is visited by a potential client, Nicky Lestrange, who is somewhat put off by partner Richard’s overbearing powers of observation. The meeting doesn’t exactly end on a promising note but the partners quickly assemble when it’s announced that a U.S. philanthropic billionaire, wishing to remain anonymous, believes in their work and wants to back the agency – with one stipulation (isn’t that always the case?) – that the agency takes on another partner who would act in the capacity of an impartial lead detective using traditional techniques. The Deaduction Agency has a good premise but falls a little short on execution. In some places, such as near the beginning of the book, there is an inordinate amount of detailed explanation provided as to the set up of the agency’s offices – details that detract from the momentum of the story. The author might have been better served by providing some additional information about the agency’s conception or details behind the relationship between Richard and Honey. As a final note, the book’s title was great but the author’s description of the book was somewhat minimalistic. It could have been fleshed out more in order to tantalize prospective readers and draw them in.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A book filled with unusual interesting stories By Israel Drazin This is a very clever and fascinating book, with subtle and sometimes laugh-out-loud humor, as one can gather from the book’s title. Ignoring the humor, one may wonders “is this possible,” “is it science fiction,” or “is it true that an agency can be set up comprised of people who have paranormal skills, who have the ability to see what the police cannot see and are therefore able to solve crimes the police cannot solve.” After-all, we know of cases where people claiming such skills aided the police, frequently correctly, as the author tells us in his introduction. This is the premise of this book. Four people with paranormal skills solve cases such as murders, pedophiles, adulterous deranged husbands. The four have all kinds of unique skills and are even able to communicate with the dead and gain their help in solving crimes. The book starts slow with overuse of descriptions, as a car starts shortly after turning on the ignition, but then speeds up. This beginning is, as is the rest of the book, filled with humor. The four have no clients until a strange woman appears with what seems to be but isn’t a run-of-the-mill divorce case. The four soon discover that they will be bank-rolled by a billionaire on the condition that they take on a fifth partner who is an ex-detective with no paranormal skills.

Staughton I've long been wary of psychic phenomena and the promotion of those types of ideas, but after reading this fascinating little book, I may have changed my mind slightly. I still don't believe in speaking directly to spirits or ouija boards, but I am more inclined to believe that something more is going on out there than we are capable of comprehending. This book may be fictitious, and the characters presented by Tumbler are downright silly at times, but the variety os situations and the depths of description seem torn from real life. Either that, or Tumbler is even a better writer than I am crediting him with being. The range of paranormal descriptions wrapped into this fast-paced and cleverly crafted novel assume that this is the status quo, with no room for doubt, and over time, a reader falls into that pattern, which allows us to engage with the book and the primary players even more deeply. Any book that can begin to subtly break down our rational understanding of the world is powerful, and rare. Whether or not you have been holding seances for years or doubting the legitimacy of the paranormal arts since birth, you'll find something controversial, compelling, or mind-altering in this book. Round of Applause, Mr. Tumbler.

Action, humor, irony, ethics and a mysterious screwdriver.Ron Francis shows his love of science fiction and understanding of the human (and alien) soul in this book. The bad guys are bad and the good guy is somewhat conflicted. He and his crew face hazards and deadlines as they search for and rescue a stranded alien scientist. Powerful politics are at play (or, rather, war), complicating their mission and placing the Luminari Cluster at risk. All parts of the story support each other, building on our knowledge of the characters and of the technology they use. They have the stamina for the whole ride and Francis has the craft to take us along with their successes and hardships. The violence is not hard gore and sex is only implied, never depicted. I predict that everyone who reads this book will get the second one in the series and all after that.

That past catches up with him when he Vanguard of the Luminaries Cluster Commonwealth gives him an important mission. Chase gets his crew together for e job and away we go.I really love the complex relationship between Chase and Kat. I think Mr. Francis does a great job developing Chase. I almost felt like I was watching him grow. There was so much I loved about this novel. The action was intense at times, but slows down long enough for the crew of the Longshot to occasionally catch their breath. The settings were interesting, and the dialogue did a good job of moving the action along. If you are looking for something quick and fun to read, I would strongly recommend Cadogan's Gamble.

By Shetteredskies1 Was very good and left me wanting to figure out what comes next for the group. Loved the direction the book went in at the end and how it seems that next book will add and flesh out the complexity of these characters. For the style of the book compared to others Ron has written it is very different. At times the book reminds of his others and I like that cause I can see how he likes to write and has evolved from book to book. Give it a read it will be well worth the money.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. An Essential Read for Making Sense of Our World By Jacob Prahlow Every so often a book comes along and truly rewrites the paradigms of a field. Some twenty-five years ago, David Noebel penned such a book, titled Understanding the Times. In this 900-page tome Noebel outlined the clash between competing worldviews – ways of viewing and interpreting the world – which were occurring throughout in the late 20th century. The original edition of UTT was one of the most popular and influential books ever on culture and worldviews from a Christian perspective, transforming how many people understand the battle of ideas taking place in our times. But the contours of major worldviews have changed since 1991 and the world has changed along with them. To address this new worldviews context, Jeff Myers, in conjunction with David Noebel, undertook a substantial revision of Noebel’s classic work, now called Understanding the Times: A Survey of Competing Worldviews (Manitou Springs, CO: Summit Ministries and Colorado Springs: David C. Cook, 2015. 510pp.).The fundamental premise of UTT is that ideas have consequences, and that understanding important worldview[1] ideas helps make sense of and make a difference in the world. This volume examines six major worldviews – Christianity, Islam, Secularism, Marxism, New Spirituality, and Postmodernism – through consideration of what each worldview says about fundamental categories of human thought and life – theology, philosophy, ethics, biology, psychology, sociology, law, politics, economics, and history. The perspective embodied within UTT remains firmly orthodox in its Christianity, calling readers to learn, discern, and live their faiths. Myers and Noebel do not reject the non-Christian worldviews they examine outright, but call readers to recognizing the deficiencies of these perspectives and the sufficiency of Christ and the Christian view of the world.Chapter one masterfully sets the terms of the conversation, outlines the importance a worldview makes, argues for the vitality of understanding before engagement, and provides an overview of the worldviews and topics to be discussed throughout the duration of the volume. Central to the framing of this entire work is the idea that understanding the truth about non-Christian worldviews will ultimately confirm the truth of the Christian worldview. The next six chapters offer overviews of Christianity, Islam, Secularism, Marxism, New Spirituality, and Postmodernism. These are neither short summaries nor easy dismissals of these viewpoints, but instead offer extensive engagement with the central beliefs, practices, and perspectives of these ultimately “religious”[2] views of the world. Where some apologetics-oriented books fail to take seriously the claims of non-Christian systems, UTT engages deeply and seriously the coherence and concerns of these worldviews systems. The next ten chapters offer in-depth examinations of what each worldview has to say about the realms of theology, philosophy, ethics, biology, psychology, sociology, law, politics, economics, and history. Each section includes an introduction to and history of the subject at hand, followed by consideration of what Secularism, Marxism, Postmodernism, New Spirituality, Islam, and Christianity have to say about said topic. Not only do these chapters helpfully define the parameters of the field being discussed and provide accurate summaries of what each worldview holds, but each chapter also concludes with additional insights from the Christian worldview. For example, the chapter on politics opens with some remarks on the history and practicality of thinking politically and then launches into what each worldview says about politics and that field’s scope and importance. After the summaries are complete, there is a section on the five possible Christian responses to politics (from “don’t be involved” to “Christians should take over”) and then a question and answer section on biblical responses to various political questions. The final chapter offers concluding remarks, not only for the entire UTT project but also for each worldview and topic examined. Ultimately, the tests of reason, outer world, inner world, and the real world confirm what Myers and Noebel have been arguing throughout this book: that the Christian worldview – rooted in Christ, not necessarily in individual Christians – best explains reality. Ideas have consequences for the real world. Accordingly, those with the best ideas – the Christian worldview – ought to be informed about the world and engaged in every area of society. The final chapter does a fine job conveying the overarching value of UTT as a cumulative resource for understanding today’s most influential systems of thought, concisely and accurately presenting those ideas, and offering legitimate responses from a Christian perspective. If UTT misses covering anything, it is Eastern religions such as Hinduism and Buddhism. While the sections on New Spirituality begin to introduce readers to these world religions, simply not enough information has been presented here to offer Christians a coherent picture of or response to these large and growing religious traditions. Eastern religions were missing from the older version of UTT as well and these religions are less influential in the Western and American contexts than elsewhere in the world, so this lacuna remains entirely understandable. One other quibble involves the lack of “suggested reading” sections for the plethora of topics examined in this book. While the endnotes for each chapter functionally serve this purpose, an easily accessible list of resources for further investigation would have been a great addition to an already masterful volume.Overall, UTT offers a foundational perspective for Christians trying to make sense of this world and provides compelling evidence for why the Christian worldview offers the most accurate view of True Reality. Accordingly, UTT comes highly recommended for anyone capable of reading, especially Christians interested in making sense of this world and impacting it for Christ. This work would make an especially valuable read for high schoolers and college students who are (or will shortly be) regularly interacting with other visions of the world. Pastors and other Christians who fill roles of discernment and leadership will also learn much from this book. This reviewer has kept an older version of UTT on his bookshelf since 2009, and he looks forward to placing this volume right next to it and consulting it regularly. The value of this book can hardly be overstated: it is simply a must read.Understanding the Times stands an important call to think deeply and truly about God, the world, and the ideas at work in the world. As an early example makes clear, Myers and Noebel are not interested in Christians indoctrinating themselves and eschewing the world. Rather, this book serves as a call to learn about the world and then impact the world for Christ. For it is only after we have understood the times that we may hope to influence them.[1] UTT defines worldview as “a pattern of ideas but also a pattern of beliefs, convictions, and habits that help us make sense of God, the world, and our relationship to God and the world.” In essence, worldviews answer ultimate questions through the description of and prescription for the world.[2] Insofar as all worldviews have things to say about God and ultimate reality, they contain religious (theological) claims.I received this book from Summit Ministries in exchange for my honest review. Worldview From A Christian Perspective By Michelle Kidwell Understanding the TimesA Survey of Competing Worldviewsby Jeff MyersDavid C CookChristian, Religion & SpiritualityPub Date Sep 1, 2015In this book Jeff Myers points out that often people get their beliefs the same way we catch a virus by being around others. We are reminded too that ideas have consequences (good or bad). We are reminded too that ideas spread like viruses, ( which is how occults can grow so quickly) and hold a grip on those who carry those extremist beliefs. Myers also points out that Christianity offers a narrative of all history. Myers also pointed out that a major dividing line between Christian and non Christian worldviews is this…What do we do with Jesus? As is pointed out in Understanding the Times “Either Christians correctly describe reality when they speak of a loving, wise, just, personal, creative God, or they are talking nonsense. The basic tenets of the Bible cannot blend well with the non-Christian claim that we are good enough to save ourselves. We say only one view fits the facts: Christianity. God, Creator of the universe, saw its importance, loved it, loved us, so that he sent his son to redeem it— and us. Clearly, adherents of other worldviews strongly disagree with our conclusion that only Christianity fits the facts.” MyersMyers reminds us too that the Christian worldviews lies solely on Jesus Christ. We (as Christians) serve a Personal God. The Christian story is that of a personal relational God. “The Christian worldview gives meaning to human existence right from the start when God declares, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness” (Gen. 1: 26).” Myers. We are reminded too that “It will never be lawful to be ourselves, until we become like Sons and daughters of God.”On September 11, 2001 the world became painfully aware of the radical side of Islam when terrorists attacked the United States in the name of the Jihad.Myers describes Secularism as an atheisic and materialistic worldview that advocates for a society free of religion. He later reminds us that Secularism is more than a disbelief in God it is a belief in looking at life in a way that does not include God or religion. In Chapter Five of Understanding the Times Jeff Myers defines Marksism as this “Marxism: an atheistic and materialistic worldview based on the ideas of Karl Marx that promotes the abolition of private property, public ownership of the means of production (i.e., socialism), and the utopian dream of a future communistic state.”. But we should not be fooled because despite what many believe Marksismcan be considered a worldview. And many do not see this worldview as dangerous but that too is a mistake.Myers describes what Marksism teaches later in Chapter Five “The overarching Marxist narrative culminates in class equality through economic revolution. The exploiters— those who control the means of production (i.e., those who own businesses and employ people) lord it over the exploited (i.e., those who do manual labor, who do not have an ownership stake in their workplaces , or who do work but do not own their workplaces). Overthrowing the exploiters will free the exploited; we’ll all be happier if we are all the same.”In Chapter Six Myers goes on to define New Spirrituality “New Spirituality: a pantheistic worldview that teaches everything and everyone are connected through divine consciousness.”. In New Spirituality everything is Spiritual and we all are God’s.In the chapters to follow Myers goes on to give us a look at Postmodernism, theology, and even Philosophy. Even Ethics is discussed in this book. Biology, psychology and Sociology are also discussed. Law and Politics are addressed as well. Economics and it’s relationships to the different world views are discussed as well. The Subject of History and the often opposing worldviews is discussed. If you are looking for a book written from a Christian perspective that deals with the often opposing Worldviews then Understanding the Times by Jeff Myers is just the ticket.Five out of five stars…Happy Reading

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. one-star rating is for the very poor Kindle formatting of this book By KDI In agreement with Arnold Williams' review, my one-star rating is for the very poor Kindle formatting of this book, not its content. The main text is in a grey font; only the footnote callers, the footnote text, and the pull quotes are in black font. The gray text is difficult to read (on a Paperwhite 1), so my eyes and head felt strained after only about fifteen minutes of reading. There is no way I could persevere through a 640-page book like that, so I returned it for a refund the next day.Two other things indicated that this Kindle version was carelessly converted: There is no link to the table of contents from the Go To menu; and footnotes appeared in various ways -- sometimes one footnote in-line, sometimes multiple footnotes joined together as one footnote in-line, and sometimes by jumping to the footnote page itself (not in-line).Such poor quality is unprofessional and inexcusable. When publishers convert books to Kindle, I wish they would use staff who are themselves Kindle users so they will know what to look for in the final product.

A Flawed Gem, Nearly Unknown But Worth The Read By A Customer I became interested in Off On A Comet through the old Classics Comics version, and I was able to track it down once in the late 1970's; this book is exceedingly rare. It concerns the travels of a French foreign legionnaire, his sidekick, and various others carried off on a comet which sideswipes the earth in the 1800's. This "comet" is a small, planetiod-like world with atmosphere, land, and ocean. The journey is utterly unbelievable in the light of present knowledge, but Verne is as scientifically correct relative to the knowledge of his day as he could be. Before the travelers are redeposited on the earth in another grazing collision, the comet's eccentric orbit carries them near Venus and Mars, causing them to suffer through terrible extremes of climate. Verne delights in the ability of human ingenuity to overdome obstacles, conflicts, and deprivation as they explore and edure their temporary home. The flights of imagination involved are remarkable and the characterizations are good. I was, however, surprised at the vicious anti-Semitism evident in the characters and the narrative. This will be an enormous problem for many readers, and is a major flaw in an otherwise superb work

By Dirk Nomad As with another reviewer, nostalgic recollection of the great Classics Illustrated Comic version of Off on a Comet prompted me to get the original from the library. Alas, Off on a Comet begins at a point near the end of the Classics Comics plot. Turns out all the good parts are in part one of Hector Servadac, called To the Sun. The library found me a volume called "The Space Novels of Jules Verne" (Dover publications, 1960) which contains both To the Sun? and Off on a Comet. Sometimes these are called Hector Servadac: Part One and Hector Servadac: Part Two, respectively.

I especially enjoy authors like Jules Verne, who had quite an imagination! One thing that is fun to do is compare his imaginative ideas with what we know today. For instance, this book is about traveling through our solar system on a comet. Of course we know much more about the solar system today, but it is fun to see how much more we know compared to a century ago. However, this book got pretty technical at times, talking about planet distances from the sun, time it would take to travel those distances in space, figuring out mass, diameter, etc. of the comet, all in great detail, and much of it was tedious and wrong. Having said that, I still enjoy how he writes. His characters have quite an adventure, and it was fun to go along for the ride!

Sixteen-year-old Tasso Menzies just finished burying his grandfather next to his mother and grandmother on the family farm when he receives an order from his estranged uncle to come to Capital City. He doesn't want to leave the only home he's ever known. He doesn't want to be apprenticed on a space freighter crewed by Texas cowboys of Mexican descent. He certainly doesn't want to be gone for so long that his home and inheritance are stolen. While trying to fit in and still get home he learns what it is like to live in space, what a cheerleader is, how spicy a taco can be, and that Texicans like a good fight as much as he does.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Another amazing story By NonStop TITANIUM TEXICANS is a remarkable science fiction action adventure for the young and young at heart. It is a good old-fashioned space opera with good guys vs. bad guys. We have enough action to keep the adventurous entertained, enough romance to keep the lovers diverted, and enough humor to keep the rest of us reading.Tasso Menzies is a 16 year old boy who has had to bury his grandfather, literally! And his only remaining relative sells him off to a space going freighter filled with Texans of Mexican descent. This coming of age story wraps us up as we watch Tasso grows from being a lost young boy to a maturing young adult in unknown and confusing environment. .This is written for all ages, while there is some violence, and brief nudity it is much less than a youngster will see on cable TV. There is minimal cursing and it has been brilliantly written to give the reader a smooth engaging story.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Small town boy makes good By Matthew Ryan Very enjoyable, it seemed as though technology had taken the common sense out of the people running a very lucrative space based enterprise and forgot how to reuse their broken down or tossed out equipment and other items. Now they are stuck with an uneducated kid from some backwater planet to train on their ship to become a crewmember. He must be educated in all aspects of the ship and due to his lack on knowledge they kind of forget about him and he is left to his own devices. The crew is about to find out that he is much more than some backwater hick that knows nothing and can't do anything useful.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Solid characters but a meandering storyline By R. Guerin Strong character development, but a predictable and at times somewhat repetitive storyline (I was ready to drop the book after reading for the nth times how the multi-pupose "extruder" that our hero located in the spaceship attic saved the day by producing one more set of unique ribbons ... this may not make sense, but if you read the book, you'll quickly get what I'm referring to).The story starts planet-side after our hero just lost his grandfather who had raised him on the family farm. He undertakes a trip to the main city to his only remaining family, his uncle, and quickly find himself shipped onto a spaceship where the bulk of the story takes place. The spaceship is little more than a "small town" substitute, and there is little if anything in terms of space specific details. The bulk of the story deals with the challenges our hero faces (and always overcomes) in getting acquainted with a drastically new environment. The book's main strength is that the characters are well developed with many personable and realistic interactions, but that's about it. The rest is pretty mundane. I kept waiting for the unexpected, but it never came. This remained a pleasant read, but now that I know what to expect, I'll probably pass on the following volumes that were clearly in the waiting given how the book ends.

A little bit Star Wars, a little bit Halo, a little bit Jesus story, and a little LRH scifi too.Curious to see how the final plot twists carry thru in Book 3.In desperate need of a good proof reader/editor. Numerous misspellings, wrong homonyms, and grammatical errors at times catch my reading continuity. Endemic to ebooks it seems.Slightly conflicted over some of the military/hero/salvation themes and implications, but overall a good, fun read.

Do you still have your grandmother's old Betty Crocker cookbook? What if it contained secret messages that changed everything you were taught about your identity? For Kate Miller all is perfect. She is falling in love with the ideal man while advancing in her professional career. Then her neat and ordered life crashes. She receives a strange email from her deceased grandmother. Coupled with this, her apartment is burgled and her cookbooks stolen, especially the one she was instructed to preciously guard. After hiring a quirky private detective she goes on a quest that leads to an impossible truth. This romantic/thriller is interlaced with memories of tastes, smells and laughter in the kitchen, and how a grandmother lovingly prepared a young girl to face enormous challenges.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Page Turner With Just The Right Touch Of Romance By Beach'n'Book Loved this book. I was hooked from the first paragraph when Kate comes home and finds that her apartment has been broken into and many of her things stolen. The book then becomes an adrenalin driven series of unexpected twists and turns as Kate and Axel (her private detective) follow a series of clues found in a strange place, a cookbook. The fast pace is broken up by nostalgic flashbacks to Kate’s grandmother’s kitchen, the meals they ate and the love that was shown. What I liked most was the character development (- with Kate seeming weak in the beginning but becoming a strong woman in the end) and references to historical/cultural facts. Would recommend this to anyone looking for an interesting and fun book to read on the beach.

Follows the recipe but needs more spice and sugar By Northern Lights I see some really good bones here, this could be a very cute cozy with some depth. The product description calls this a "romantic/thriller" and the cover and title says "cozy" but it's not quite there - not enough quirk, not enough sass in the heroine for that to fit properly. Others may like it better but to me it seems like it would have benefited from a proper edit in order to weed out the weak spots in the writing (some paragraphs read more like authors' notes) and to flesh out some characters that could be great. I wish we could see more of the grandmother. And recipes;-)

By Amazon Customer Picked up this book without knowing much about it, but found it totally intriguing. I enjoyed the interplay of Erin and Axel and the quest to find her belongings and heritage through the clues they were presented. Had to finish it in1 sitting.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Addictive By Karli My introduction to Lucy Varna was Tempered, book 3.5 in the series, which I read in an anthology. I was hooked and then read book one, The Prophecy, which is free. At that point, it made sense to buy the omnibus, because it was apparent I would be in a reading marathon until I finished the available books in the series. It is that good, and addictive. I've now read both omnibus sets and am impatiently awaiting the release of book six. If you haven't read any of Varna's books and aren't sure about this set, you could start with the free book one, which is a very good read and can stand alone. I've found the books get increasingly better as the series progresses, however. So chances are, if like me you like it, you will also love the series.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Five Stars By Rebecca P. Loved this book. Good suspense and cohesive storylines. Love having strong heroines.

0 of 2 people found the following review helpful. One for a pass time not a good time. By Norma jfkrtl While this is worth reading, it is only to pass the time. The story drags and the characters are shallow. The men are more interesting than the women, but even they aren't exactly believable. All sorts of statements about how horrible every memory and every action is, but no real description to make me see or feel it. So someone swings a sword and someone else steals something and someone else shoots somebody. Big deal. Humans do that quite regularly and it is not more horrible than any other similar action.

By Paul McDaniel God has gifted Brian with wisdom and common sense when dealing with children, and even sometimes with older children whom we call adults. I actually didn't buy a book, I bought 4 books, one for each of my children who have children of their own and one for my wife and myself. I really couldn't wait to get them bought, I especially needed one for my son's widow. He passed away last year from cancer, and though she is very strong in faith, my son was her rock and she was struggling without him. More importantly, my grandkids were struggling. Brian addresses so much concerning these issue in Chapter 2, Death and Tragedy. Some we, his widow and myself, know, but it certainly helped seeing how Brian spoke to those most sensitive issues, and also gave us additional ways of looking at them. And frankly some issues I just had not given any thought to, and then later speaking to his widow, neither had she. My other kids have already put some steps into action, what with one child struggling with self image and as a result making poor choices, and another one struggling with friendship issues. There is just so much in this book, and as stated children don't come with a user manual. I highly recommend that you get your hands on this book to begin using it as the new user manual for kids. By the way, you don't have to be religious to benefit from this book (though personally it does help).

Autry Excellent Book for Parents and Kidmin Leaders I purchased a Pre-release copy of Talk Now and Later. Brian Dollar has written a valuable and much needed resource for parents and all who minister to children. I was impressed with his extensive use of the Bible in dealing with “Life’s Tough Topics.” Dollar gives general principles to follow when talking with children about ten BIG ISSUES that children and their families face throughout life. He also gives specifics and case examples for each of the issues. I was currently interested in the chapter on “Death and Tragedy” because a family in my church are facing terminal cancer of the father. I will be sharing this resource with the mother. In this chapter, Dollar gives ten general guidelines to follow for any type of tragedy or death, discusses suicide, includes the five stages of grief, and then gives insights into knowing what stage of grief a child is in. Here are some quotes from this chapter that I found most helpful. “Allow children to process the loss in their way and at their pace.” (97) “Grieving together is perhaps the most powerful and recuperative part of the healing process.” (94) In speaking of the grieving process, “Many parents presume their kid’s progress will mirror their own, but that’s seldom the case.” (107) This book will be a go-to resource in my ministry to children and their families. And as an added benefit, the reader is lead to a website for additional resources. A real bonus!
