Walter A sorry example of the laziness and irresponsibility of many trade editors today -- and it's especially shameful in a publication targeted to students and youngsters.First, the basic text is dreadful: though unidentified, it's the long-discredited translation signed by "Mercier Lewis" and rushed into print in 1872 by the London firm of Sampson, Low. As modern scholars have documented on numerous occasions, Verne's original French was politically censored, drastically abridged, couched in stilted Victorian prose, and riddled with hundreds of inane translating errors. Its clunky, antiquated English is something no American student could possibly enjoy ("I own my heart beat," says the narrator, who actually means, "I admit my heart was pounding"). As for the translating blunders, some are asinine beyond belief -- Verne's characters start a fire with a lentil (Verne: lens) . . . loosen bolts with a key (Verne: wrench) . . . and claim iron is lighter than water (Verne: the opposite, of course).Are these obscure facts? Anything but. Over the past four decades, this translation's inadequacy has been bemoaned repeatedly in basic reference works (Taves & Michaluk's JULES VERNE ENCYCLOPEDIA), online (the Jules Verne Forum at jv.gilead.org.il), and in readily available MODERN translations of this novel (e.g., the paperback editions from Signet, Oxford, and the U.S. Naval Institute). What's more, not only has Simon & Schuster's current editorial staff shirked the most rudimentary homework, they're apparently too lazy even to double-check their OWN publishing files: as long ago as 1966, S & S issued a revised edition of the Mercier Lewis translation; they hired NYU expert Walter James Miller to correct and reword Lewis's text -- which, in a specially written preface, Miller denounced as a "botched up translation . . . slashed and slapdash." Lewis's renderings, he said, "bristle with technical errors and omit whole passages vital to the technical integrity, the character development, even the humor of the story."In short, Simon & Schuster could easily have reprinted their own 1966 version, not ideal but vastly better than Lewis's original. Or, alternatively, they could have reprinted either of the other two English translations in the public domain, both superior in accuracy and completeness. But, these days, indolence and ignorance apparently rule in the halls of S & S.So, though this Enriched Classics series boasts on its back covers about its "practical scholarship," the said scholarship, not surprisingly, often works out to be dismally unreliable. The "helpful notes" and "insightful commentary" can range from the useless to the ridiculous. On p. 425, the explanatory notes can only tell us that such sea creatures as tubipores, gorgones, and spondyles are "various kinds of marine life." Big help. (They're corals, sea fans, and oysters, folks.) On the other hand, when the notes attempt more, they're often worse: on p. 426, for instance, I was amazed to learn that porphitae and asterophytons are "igneous outcrops." Nooo!!! These aren't rocks, people, they're animals! (Jellyfish and starfish, for Lord's sake.)If you're as astonished as I am that such bluff and nonsense is being palmed off on our kids as "scholarship," write S & S this week.Meantime, what edition of 20,000 LEAGUES should you acquire? First, in addition to this Enriched Classics version, also avoid those other student editions (!) published by Scholastic, Tor, and Apple -- they don't identify it either, but they all blindly reprint this same hopeless 1872 Mercier Lewis translation. Fortunately, however, there are four sound paperback texts of 20,000 LEAGUES, all readily available, all immeasurably superior in accuracy, completeness, and readablility. For general readers the Bonner (Bantam) and Brunetti (Signet) translations are both worthwhile. For readers wanting an annotated edition, there are two good ones: Butcher's (Oxford), which is strong on the novel's genesis and manuscript record, and Miller's own illustrated retranslation (U.S. Naval Institute), which is strong on the marine biology -- and on which I myself collaborated. All are competitively priced, so there's no need to settle for something inferior.By the way, the above-cited deficiencies may well be typical of this Enriched Classics collection as a whole -- I note that their edition of Dumas' MONTE CRISTO also features a seriously inadequate text. Students, parents, and teachers are warned to proceed with caution vis-à-vis the entire series.

512 of 560 people found the following review helpful. Don't buy this book! By J. M. Margot If you're going to read one of the great classics of literature-and you should-don't pick up this edition. It is a reprint of a version that dates back to the 1870s and was exposed more than 40 years ago for cutting nearly one-quarter of Verne's story and mistranslating much of the remainder. Its reappearance in this edition is all the more amazing considering Tor's status as a leading science fiction publisher, and the company's willingness to perpetrate this fraud on is many readers is truly stunning. If you want to truly get to know Verne's novel, pick up the elegant Naval Institute Press edition, in a modern, complete, updated translation, with commentary by the leading American Verne expert today, Walter James Miller. That book also comes with many of the artistic engravings that illustrated the original French first edition (no illustrations are to be found in the B&N Mercier reprint). Less attractive but more academic is the Oxford Classics version of Twenty Thousand Leagues. The Main Wiccan Traditions

Practicing magic isn’t compulsory for Wiccans, however many people are inevitably attracted to the religion by the potential to positively change their lives for the better. As such, spellwork is one of the most discussed parts of being Wiccan. If you want to start practicing magic, it can help to join like-minded individuals. Both covens and circles can provide you with a sense of belonging by joining a small Wiccan community. By Abby As is usual with this author, this book contains a lot of very concrete information, with numerous examples, and is written in an easily understandable style (no endless, overly flowery sentences) which I really like. There is enough information that the basics are really covered, but not so much that the reader feels lost in it.There is only one tiny thing I wish would have been explicited: there was a mention of 'the Celtic classification of elements [as opposed to] the standard Wiccan system', and I feel having the Celtic classification of elements quickly explained in the book itself rather than having to google it would have been a plus. In my opinion, it also would have been nice to mention that sometimes, beginners who start out with Wicca end up in non-Wiccan Pagan religions (like I did); I'm not sure how common it is, but I don't think I'm the only one?Even as a non-beginner, I did learn a few things (for instance, I knew Wiccan covens could vary in size, but I did not know they could have as few as three members). I appreciated that the author touches on both positive and negative aspects of every situation, trying to provide information that is as unbiased as possible given the very personal nature of Wicca.And, even as a non-Wiccan, I again find that I can apply some of the advice given to my own practice by analogy, which is always nice, and why I keep reading these books. =)[Just so the people reading these reviews know exactly where I'm coming from with this — if it's not of interest to you, you can skip the rest, nothing else is going to be about the book itself. I'm an eclectic Pagan; I don't consider myself a Wiccan anymore, but I considered myself one for about a year and a half before I found out that Wicca wasn't actually the right path for me. I've been a solitary practitioner for about four years (I'm kind of a lone wolf in everything in life, so it follows that my religious practice would be solitary as well).]

It gives a good overview of Wicca's history without getting so engrossed in it as to lose it's main focus. Going into reading this I was somewhat unsure the book would interest me because I do not personally have much interest in Wiccan covens. I am glad to say the opposite is true. Wicca Covens is a book that goes through a lot of material quickly and easily without ever getting bogged down by anything. It remained interesting all the way through talking about coven structure, different traditions, Eclectic Wicca, and more condensing everything down very well. The brevity was very welcome most of the time but in the area of Wiccan traditions I wish they would have had a more comprehensive list; I also think more information about forming a coven could have been included. All in all though this is a great book and I recommend it to anyone who would like to know more about Wiccan covens.

Wicca Covens, another great book from Lisa Chamberlain By Bill Fisk When i look at all the books i have read on magic and Wicca, Lisa Chamberlain's name comes up on the books I have enjoyed and learned from.Wicca Covens is another fine example of how to cover a subject! She gives you the history of covens and also the personal dynamics that one can find in a group. Covens are made up of people with a joint view of the world. The problems that can come about from this are covered showing both the good and the bad. I personally would have wished I could have read this book before trying to join a coven, it would have alerted me to the signs I blissfully ignored. She shows the many different traditions and makeups that can be found and explains very well how they came about. I have only one request of the author, could you combine all of your books into one volume, it would have a central spot on my bookcase!

By Renee Spicuzza This is one of those books that requires extreme amounts of creativity to come up with a plotline with the magnitude of governmental conspiracies. I thoroughly enjoyed all of the scandalous scenarios that Joseph D’Antoni had created and was able to put into one fluid plot. Though the description of the novel sounds a bit outlandish, it is actually a very action packed book with events that flow together and make for a very thought provoking concept. Wade Hanna is the main character who has discovered a secret team that is working as part of the U.S. Military and have actively taken part in using drugs to take out other individuals within the Military because of secrets they had known. The covering up of these intentional deaths leads Wade to discover a deeper meaning, a terrorist plot that could destroy an entire system with one power move. Antoni does a great job of connecting different schemes together and I loved this action packed novel!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Wade Hanna Takes Charge! By JA Armstrong This is a classic who done it thriller set in the military and intelligence community. The first chapter does a fantastic job of orienting you within the series and setting up the back-story. You get to know the main character and his back-story and start to care for him and his friends (and possible lover?).Semi-Spoiler alert: It was rather convenient how, in the story older, more experienced agents from different agencies started to defer to the main character even though he hadn't fully graduated from the training program yet... I don't know how plausible that is, but it did help to keep the story flowing as they followed up less and then worked together and hunted down the bad guys. The ending was very satisfying in how it tied up all loose ends but it did introduce some new plot lines in the last chapter that will be answered in the next book. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Great thriller / mystery series By Liz Evans I didn’t realize that this was the second book until I came in to leave this review. Score one for my attention to details. There was enough information given early on to satisfy any issues that I might have had missing out on that first novel without giving away the entire story. I like backstories. The tone throughout the novel was suspenseful and full of mystery. The plot was a bit tangled to see around but once I caught the line I was good. Wade is well developed and his character is remarkably likable. The bit of a cliffhanger at the end was a nice teaser into what I hope is another book. I like how the majority of the loose ends were tied up by the end of this book though. Overall, a great story and what looks like to be part of a great series. I’d recommend this book and personally, I’m going back to read the first one now.

I love essential oils By Amazon Customer I love essential oils and getting acquainted with its full benefits and knowing how to use them is vital to me.This guide will help you get to know well on the importance of essential oils to different aspects such as weight loss and healing.I am glad I got this book during its free promo and though it is short, I still able to get what I wanted to know.

Essential oil combinations are useful By Warner First and foremost why I think this book is worth my time, even to leave a thank you, is because I found what I was really looking for when I bought this book – recipes. There wasn’t much really, that’s like the only downside to this, but I got a great deal of new ideas from the essential oil blends that were given here. I make my own homemade creams and stuff, so this book is a handy guide for me. I made a new combination of essential oils in my lotion this week. I am still trying it on but I love the aroma it gives out. The links given at the end of the book for the amazon searches on different types of oils are another plus of this book, somewhat like a shortcut the way I see it.So far for my lotions I’ve only been using lavender oil. But I used the combination given in the face wash recipe; lemongrass, patchouli and Ylang-Ylang blend, minus the soap, I added this to my lotion. This one I haven't even tried on yet. Maybe I am just too excited to try new things!

This book taught me so much and I still use it all the time. Very informative, will try several of these recipes. I have been interested in the essential oils and aromatherapy for quite a while and after a few days of hopelessly trawling through the internet for information I stumbled upon this book. Sherryl Moffat has done a sterling job here, I finished the book feeling inspired, excited and full of ideas. She is a brilliant writer that leads to a great book!

Biblical Preparedness without the Hype By William Struse If I had to sum up this book in just a few words I would have to say it is about stewardship - stewardship as individuals, families and church communities. So often the discussion of “preparedness” gets framed in terms of wild eye survivalists preparing for the end of the world. In this well written book the author Carl Gallups elevates the discussion and gives practical and commons sense advice on how Christians can fulfill their responsibilities to each other and their fellow man within a Biblical context of love.In this book you’ll find a wealth of practical information on preparedness with an underlying foundation based upon solid Biblical principles. I especially appreciate how Mr. Gallups reminded his readers throughout the book that real stewardship and preparedness begins in the heart and it is that focus which keeps physical preparedness in the proper balance.In the end, at least from my perspective, it’s about fulfilling the Royal Law to love our neighbor as ourselves. It is that principle reflected, in our actions towards each other, which should really drive our daily lives as believers. BE Thou Prepared is a practical primer on how to accomplish that in the day in which we live.

I usually get bored and sleepy reading books like this. I am about half way through and I can't put it down.It really has me doing a lot of thinking and giving me an entirely new perspective and out look. I feel as if the Holy Spirit is speaking to me. I am reading and learning from the book but at the same time realizing things that are not in the book.The book doesn't say this but one of the things I have realized is that from reading my Bible and KNOWING that hard times are coming and by preparing ahead for them I am showing my faith in God and his word. Instead of just thinking/saying, Oh well, God will handle it. I will just pray when it all hits the fan. By believing in the prophesies written about in the Bible and seeing the signs right before my eyes every day, and preparing I am showing that I do have faith. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE BOOK. Schmidtbauer The church I attend is currently going through some issues and we have hired security to watch over the situation. We also have people who conceal and carry. This has been controversial to some of the attendees, but in this day and age, I definitely understand why security is necessary. Every church should have a good gameplan for if an incident happens. As head usher, we are working with Security to understand each person's role during an incident. The statistics of terrorism of churches and church shootings were very eye-opening. As a Prepper, the information on how long to keep food and putting food in PET bottles was very informative. I have referred this book to our Security personnel at church.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great Escapism By R.A. R.M Gaylor definitely has a vivid imagination. Not being a science fiction fan I was totally involved with the plot. He made it into a mystery and I being a mystery fan, just didn't want to put the book down. His writing was intense and very descriptive, I kept wondering how is this going to end.The ending definitely was from the "the outer limits."

From the start it was a book that grabbed my attention and then kept me asking questions. It was a page turner the entire read. I do hope that a second book comes out to let us know what happens with all the characters.
