Combining elements of MM romance with YAOI graphic novel storytelling, this two volume set starts off with a bang and quickly immerses the reader into a dangerous world of intrigue, deception, secrets and lies. The plot is complex, weaving in and out of the past and the present, a chess match with exquisite attention to detail and interlocking parts that are teased from the story at critical junctures, parsed and parceled and leaving just enough untold to make this reader weak with frustration and anxiety as I binge read through the entirety in one sitting. Two pairings dominate the story: Michael and Kiyoshi, Ichiro and Masato, though that is an over-simplification as they have histories that parallel and intersect dynamically, by co-incidence and by design. Kiyoshi is perhaps my favorite: multifaceted, his character is at once the gentle spirit at the center of this romance, yet he’s also the hard core sociopath who drives the plot and the action like a master designer.Interspersed with high action and perilous adventure is erotica with a sensual side I’ve not visited before. The author treads with delicate, almost ethereal steps, elevating the scenes of affection to art. But that kind of art is not always ethereal or pretty, often it is ugly and painful and non-consensual and the author does not flinch, nor does he hold back when a character comes face-to-face with difficult, sometimes impossible, choices. The angst is hard-won, too often undeserved, and there are repercussions from acts so heinous they reverberate through space and time. People fracture, fail and reconstruct, often in unexpected ways. You will weep, wail and gnash your teeth. You may think you see it coming. You won’t.Vol. I sets up all the characters, profiling each, setting up a virtual white board upon which we can attach imaginary lines of co-incidence and real-time interactions, map out a history, and then step up to the abyss for a leap of faith.Vol. II is more action-oriented. The stakes—high enough in the first Volume—ramp up at a dizzying rate. Nothing ever goes exactly as planned, there are unforeseen consequences, and fate often deals a fickle hand. How each character handles the rapid shifts is like watching a mini-series, subplots with subplots, all moving the main plot along at a breakneck pace. The denouement had me questioning my assumptions (yet again) and left me breathless and bereft the thrill ride was over.Dojo Boys: Dragon and Crow deserves a galaxy of stars. This is a highly recommended read.

Because only a handful can grab my attention and when they do, I really, really enjoy them. Thing is, this can be a difficult genre for those unused to it. It can be a trudging read if written badly. Fortunately for Dojo Boys, it was well written, though on the heavy side. Why? Well, the author went a little technical in some areas. Having said that, the technicalities were what made this a very interesting and surprisingly fast read. If I sound conflicted, yes it is true. Then again, that is the yaio style I am used to.There is a huge cast of characters and as I was only given this volume, it took me some time to get through it without actually going back to the first book for reference. Again, another surprising fact about this read, I really did not need that first book, although this is not a stand alone project. Project is the word I use for this is ongoing and will keep on going. That is the yaoi style. Again. For those not ready, get ready.Let's talk about Kiyoshi. He suffers from a personality disorder which, in lay man's terms, is like Sybil. What led to his disorder can be disturbing to read but does set the basis for who and what he is. Despite his problem, his seeming vulnerability, he is a man who the authorities are looking for. Problem is, which of his characters or personalities are they to find when they finally catch on?Michael is an orphan who struggled to get his life somewhere. Currently, he is seeking to gain his brown belt and falls for the enigmatic Kiyoshi. Reading through, I wondered which character he was really in love with as Kiyoshis is literally, three in one, with the three battling it out with each other and loving Michael in their own way. Kind of confusing, very confusing in fact, but also quite enlightening. As the Kiyoshi and Michael romance blooms, the plot thickens and the mysteries deepen. As confounded I found myself at times, it was not difficult to continue reading simply because of the way this story was told. Now, grammar nazis, there are a lot of errors I encountered but I turned a blind eye to them because of the whole story. I love this and do hope it gets a proper editor sometime to clean it up. Because of the obvious cross-eyed wonders in typos and grammar, I dropped a star. But look, it's still a four, which means, yes, it was a really, really great read.

By Erin O'Quinn To recount the action of Dragon & Crow in just a few words: Kyoshi, now a teenager once attacked as a young boy, returns to wreak vengeance on those who caused his anguish. The nature of the attack, and the consequences for the child and the adult he becomes, are complex and heart-wrenching. The story of the Dragon (Kyoshi) and the Crow (Michael) is the story of how two strong and unusual young men work together to bring about justice and to forge a strong bond of love. While bowing to tradition in this two-novel set, I think Akira also knocks yaoi back a bit on its arse. Dragon and Crow is not just a formulaic ballet of male-male love, but a scintillating study in multiple personalities, brutal action, harsh criminal mentalities, and complex human motivations. Akira somehow manages to balance all these strands and even play them against each other almost to the breaking point. In so doing, he has created a fine work of real characters trying to survive in a nerve-rattling story line. The characters themselves are definitely a cut above the ordinary. These boys Michael and Kiyoshi are beautiful bishonen, yes. But beyond their physical attractiveness, they are striking and memorable. Michael Black is a green-eyed native American with a very troubled past and a maturity beyond his early twenties. His beloved Kiyoshi is especially remarkable, he of at least three distinct personalities at war with each other and with Michael. The love-lust / seme-uke conflict between these two—indeed, among “all” of them— is breathtaking, a joy to read. And there is a second set of lovers, the detective Masato and the sensei Ichiro. Circumstances bring them together after a decade of losing each other, and their slow and tense return to each other’s arms is both poignant and sensuous.Akira is blessed with an eye and a vocabulary for sensuous detail … of color and texture, of touch and smell and taste, of sexual need. No matter how often the lovers explore each other, each scene plays out so uniquely that the reader feels goosebumps, as though each new time is the first time. Difficult to do. Bravo, Alex! The language, the sensuous play of boys on boys, the intricate plot arc, the tumultuous rush of events to an exhilarating finish … all of it swept me from page to page and ended with my enthusiastic fist pump. I give this wonderful set of books a rousing five stars, for the way Alex Akira has settled under my skin and made me itch to read more and more of his Dojo Boys—and his not-so-boyish lovers too. As a reviewer of some note might say … scintillating, unique, sensual!

Carrino Ottilie Weber delivers a fresh sequel to "Shadows from the Past" with this short piece told from the first-person perspective of Kylie who finds a naked and injured young man in the woods behind her house. In a plot that ties in directly to the first of the 'Mistakes' stories, Kylie and her new-found friend Chris must deal with being hunted down by deadly werewolves. Kylie presents the readers with a quirky and funny perspective on the whole prospect of werewolves being in existence and trying to outrun them with a man she's never even met before. Similar to the first novella in this series, Ottilie Weber provides a strong sense of verisimilitude despite dealing with mythical creatures, which makes the reader believe that if these creatures did live amongst us they would be very much the same as presented in the work. Once again this piece like its predecessor is aimed toward young adult readers, but is an interesting and witty read for all age groups. Recommended to anyone who enjoys having fun with what they read and immerse themselves in a mythological world. Another exciting read that begs for a third edition to the 'Mistakes' series.

A medieval adventure for young adults, A Tale of Light and Shadow is the story of a boy struggling to become a courageous and honorable man and a girl who is desperately in love with him despite her father's disapproval. The audiobook chronicles the extraordinary tasks their adventure asks of their band of five friends and how those demands can overwhelm and break the bonds of friendship.

Enter Atolas, a world where swords and daggers both extend life and end it, where magic is feared by all but a few, and where feuds and friendships influence kingdoms and courtships.

Henry and Isabelle have secretly sworn to marry despite his lowly station. Though Henry is but a carpenter, his devotion drives him to commit an unthinkable act that may cost both of them their lives. At the same time, a secret, dark prophecy has set in motion events that will affect not only them but the thrones of rulers throughout all of Atolas, threatening to eclipse the world in shadow. But all is not lost while hope remains in the guise of an unlikely hero and the strength of friendship.

After reading it’s short prequel, The Fool and the Dragonox (previously reviewed on Amazon found here) I was very interested in reading more from Jacob Gowans, all that to say, I really enjoyed reading this book.A Tale of Light and Shadow is a light fantasy adventure set in a world of magic and adventure. All Henry wants to do is marry his childhood sweetheart, Isabell and live a normal life. His plans however are interrupted not only by a scheming father, but by an emperor and a prophecy that if allowed to be fulfilled will have dire consequences for the entire land. Through the book Henry’s bravery and leadership are tested while his friendships are pushed to the limit. But overall there is still hope.Jacob Gowans writing is excellent easily pulling readers into his world and is never jarring or sloppy. His descriptions are wonderful always painting a clear picture in my mind of what’s going on. A Tale of Light and Shadow is engaging tying together elements of adventure and fantasy. I found myself on the edge of my seat at times eager to see what happened next and how the characters would get out of whatever situation they’d landed in. I often laughed at Maggie and Ruther’s banters and I was pleasantly surprised to meet James. The characters in this book are very well written, each one shining with their own unique personalities. I found myself drawn to each of them in different ways, which is odd for me. I tend to really like one or two characters in a book but Jacob Gowans has managed to make each of his characters shine in a way that was delightfully unexpected. The more minor characters all also had charm to them as well, as soon as I met the King I liked him. The Emperor really stood out as a villain as well.A few characters did stand out a little more to me however, those being James and Ruther. I found myself wondering about both of them through the book and I was always eager to see another glimpse of their past or personalities. There were a few things that I really enjoyed about this book. The first is a small thing, but I was delighted when I realized that Atolos was an acronym for the books title, A Tale of Light and Shadow. I thought it was very witty and I can’t help but smile every time I see either the title or the name Atolos. I love it when author’s do things that that, because it just adds to the book. Speaking of the book, the ending blew me away and has left me desperately wanting to read the next book this this series. My biggest problem with this book was the pacing in the beginning. It wasn't until almost halfway through the book that I really felt the story start to really move. I kept waiting for something to happen as Henry and Isabella continually put off leaving town. It was suspenseful in the beginning, and there were quite a few times where I thought, "Things are finally going to start happening!" but after a while their stagnation in town just got old.Overall I loved A Tale of Light and Shadow. I am still eager to see more from Jacob Gowans and I cannot wait until the next book in this series comes out. I’d recommend this book for anyone interested in fantasy or adventure. The magic element is light and so it will still appeal to fans who aren’t experienced with fantasy.Note: I received an advanced readers edition of this book from the publisher for my fair and honest opinion which I have stated above.

Stokes While Scott and I were at Comic Con last April (technically FanX, but only real geeks care details like that...) I was waiting in line for Brandon Mull to sign my copy of Beyonders and I passed another table where author Jacob Gowans was signing and handing out FREE copies of his new book, A Tale of Shadow and Light. They were advanced reader copies, and the book is actually not scheduled to be released until the middle of September. It took me a little while to find time to read this because I have so many other books I want to read too, but I finally found the time.I was pretty pleased with the feel of this book; how the plot moved along and how the words flowed on the page. There were only a handful of times where the writing style tripped me up enough that I was pulled out of the story and had to stop and remind myself, "Oh yes, this is an advanced reader copy. There are going to be a few bumps along the way." But, the amount of those moments were few and far between. How to describe this book... I told Scott that it was similar to Wheel of Time (WoT) in the feel of the universe, only with less magic. There are some small hints towards supernatural forces, but it is all very minimal, with even some of the characters disbelieving that magic exists. There also appears to be only evil humans running around causing most of the problems instead of evil creatures like orcs (Lord of the Rings) or trollocs (WoT).The story is much lighter and less detailed than Robert Jordan's novels (WoT). I told Scott that it is kind of like "Wheel of Time Lite." At 400 pages, it is half the length and you don't have to invest so much time and energy figuring out the rules of the universe, which will make it more appealing to many readers. The universe of A Tale of Light and Shadow is pretty typical of most fantasy worlds and is very easy for the non-fantasy fan and fantasy fan alike to slip in to.I occasionally did find some of the interactions between the characters to be either unbelievable (too over the top, or too underwhelming), or their reactions to be poorly described (I seem to remember at least once where there was some unspoken communication between two characters that really would have benefited from simply having some dialogue instead), but that happened so little that it was hardly a problem. I really enjoyed the way the novel ended, and I have hope that this author's writing style will continue to improve with each story he completes, so I would interested in picking up the next novel in the series to see how the story continues.

I am one of those reluctant geeks that loves fantasy but I don't consider things fantasy. It's fiction. :) I didn't play D&D (although one of my boyfriends did), I have not read The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings or All of C.S. Lewis' books. I do love Princess Bride, Harry Potter, and anything with Vampires (started with Anne Rice...)With that said, I loved this book. I purchased it by chance. I love reading new authors and Jacob Gowans was signing copies so I decided to take a chance. What I loved about A Tale of Light and Shadow: The characters. The conflict. The suspense. And of course, the twists. While there could have been MORE character development, this novel included sufficient background knowledge of each character. The catch - there is more to learn about each character still! And I love that. I loved that the characters don't fit a perfect mold of "fantasy" heroes, heroines, damsels in distress, villains, or strong silent types. These characters possessed qualities that I see in people around me, in my family. And because of this, I was able to connect to the characters more than I anticipated. The conflict was better than I anticipated as well. I don't want to offer spoilers, but while I expected something sort of like what happened, I was truly caught off guard when I read what what happening. I love it when books do that!I expected a formula fantasy novel and I got nothing like that. There was suspense and guessing. I wondered who was supportive and who was conniving. This led to the twists. Again, I expected something different and was more than pleasantly surprised.I also loved the storytelling aspect. Reminded me of Rime of the Ancient Mariner... One of my favorite poems.I would recommend this novel to people who enjoy mystery and fantasy. No younger than 10 because of some battle scenes. Gowans does well to allude to violence or improprieties but doesn't go into gory detail. That was also appreciated.I am eager for the next book in this series and thrilled at my chance purchase.

The Expressman and the Detective, by Allan Pinkerton

From the Publisher The mental characteristics of Allan Pinkerton were judgment as to facts, knowledge of men, the ability to concentrate his faculties on one subject, and the persistent power of will. A mysterious problem of crime, against which his life was devoted, presented to his thought, was solved almost in an instant, and seemingly by his intuitions. With half-closed eyes he saw the scene in which the wrong was done, read every movement of the criminals, and reached invariably the correct conclusion as to their conduct and guilt.

About the Author Patrick Bass teaches history at Benedictine College, Atchison, Kansas.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Interesting on several levels By A. Diamond This book is essentially a very early police procedural. We know from the beginning who did it, and the book is all about how they were brought to justice. The story concerns Nathan Maroney, a station agent for Adams Express, who is suspected of stealing $50,000 cash from his employer in two separate thefts, in 1859. Maroney is a very clever criminal, and it takes a team of detectives several months to corner him.The cat and mouse game between Maroney and his wife, on the one hand, and Pinkerton's detectives and spies on the other, is interesting enough in itself. The book is also provides a fascinating look into daily life in the US in the mid-nineteenth century, including the cultural divisions between north and south, the way the genders interacted, social mores, what rail travel was like, etc. Although the author had no intention of creating a cultural document, he couldn't help but do so in telling a story that spans several months, so many locations, and such a large number of characters. The book is also interesting for its description of Kate Warne, probably America's first female detective, and how she gained the confidence of Maroney's wife, who was hiding the money. As some other reviewers have noted, the plot, by the standards of today's commercial thrillers, doesn't exactly race along. But it moves well enough, and the characters are interesting enough to make you want to linger a while without just racing blindly to the next plot point. The book is well written, in what is, by 19th century standards, fairly straighforward prose.

Meyer This is an obviously an embellished story of one of Pinkerton’s first cases. I found it to be interesting in how he unwittingly portrays justice at that time. The reader will find he had no qualms about setting up a person to fulfill his mission. He obviously considered this poetic justice. I think in the context of those times, I would agree with him. While this is a self serving story I did find the way he accomplished his work amazing. The vernacular he uses is also amusing and rather “corny” to the modern reader, although this usage was used at that time. I am glad this “documentary” was not edited for the benefit of today’s reader.

Keep an eye on Livingstone By Kimberly Chisholm This taut read, adeptly told via multiple, shifting narrators, is intriguing, well-structured and full of rich character development. The relationship between Iris and Owen is inspirational with writing that feels both mature and playful. Who wouldn't love a chapter that opens thusly: "The weight of Iris's story as well as the way she speaks made me notice one crucial detail: I am flipping awesome." Read this book, people, and plan to keep an eye on L.Poppy. There are BIG THINGS are in the literary future of Ms. Livingstone.
