For Caleb Hicks, survival means hiding in plain sight.
Trained from a young age to be a super-soldier, he has worked hard to keep his abilities hidden. But after a disastrous mistake forces him into military service, hiding his skills becomes increasingly difficult. To maintain his cover, he isolates himself, rarely speaking and discussing his past with no one.
Until now.
After finding love in the wake of catastrophe, he will finally reveal the secrets of his childhood, his training, and the tragic events of his life following the Outbreak. Packed with intense action, thrills, and suspense, The Darkest Place is a harrowing tale of love, loss, and survival against all odds.
And ultimately, of the enduring power of hope.

Change of focus in this book brings to life the surviving the dead world By Kindle Customer This book is just as good as it's predecessors in the series. However, Gabe and Eric are not the focus of this book. At first I was bummed because I love the two main characters. I quickly overcame my disappointment and enjoyed seeing this world created by James Cook through the eyes of Caleb Hicks, a character introduced in an earlier book. There is a lot of detail to his backstory... it made for a cannot put down until it is finished read.Loved this book-Love this series.

From a very young age Caleb was trained by his father and later by his fathers friends, each one a specialist in the US forces. The darkest place depicts the life of young Caleb and how he had to cope and survive during the outbreak. Don't get me wrong, Caleb is no ordinary teenager, he could kill with is hands, shoot as good as any sniper and was highly trained in war craft. It is a story of death, love and revenge, human emotions and how suddenly it could all be lost. It follows Caleb from being a young man and finishes with his near death experience through drinking.Caleb is the type of person you need on your side and to be invisible if not on your side. The characters portrayed in this story are all so believable, that I found my self crying on several occasions, each character brought something extra into the story and as you would guess when the worst happened that something extra was lost. The story line is one of the best I have ever read, and as my heading says, I did not want this book to ever finish.Wonderfully written, extremely clear and concise descriptions and a story that has you turning that page even when you know you should, eat, go to work or even sleep. You don't need to have read the other book to enjoy this stand alone story.

Just like the others it did not disappoint even though it was not part of the main story arc it was still a great read. Personally I loved Hicks from the previous books and when he got a bigger part in the last Surviving the Dead I was happy, when I heard he was going to have his own novel i was excited. (But then again I loved him so I might be biased) In either case the story was good engaging with plenty of action, suspense, heartbreak and just true moments in life. I could not put the book down hard as I tried to space myself. I finished it in one night. Mr. Cook builds another wonderful adventure in the world of Surviving the Dead, we get to see a bit more of how some folks dealt as the outbreak was happening. Even though it's a big book it reads quickly and my heart went out to the characters. I have to say amazing job Mr. Cook I loved it as i have the others and the ending just left me wanting more!! I guess that is the only bad part that it ended and it just came out so now i have to wait a while before the next one. Keep them coming Mr. Cook I'll keep buying them so thank you very much and everyone should read this one you won't be disappointing!
