By Molly Mortensen @ Woven Magic Books Rated new adult due to swearing, sex, and torture.Though it's the Fourth book of the series, Maxon can be read alone.Note: Both main characters have some PTSD. (Personal pet peeve.)The good:We get to find out what happened to all of the characters from the first trilogy. Though they weren't in it much, it was fun to see them again.I love how Bauer manages to add some awesome new world building to each of her books. The world of the elementals was fascinating and I loved Lianna's powers! This is a fast paced book with plenty of action. It's hard to pull off magical battles, but these were well done.I was afraid it would be attraction at first sight, but both Lianna and Maxon had reasons to want to stay apart and this let their relationship progress more slowly. It turned out rather sweet, even if it was quite fast.I liked Lianna right away! Maxon inherited his mother's sass, (the main character of the original trilogy) but it took me a while to warm up to him.The Bad:At the beginning, Maxon came off like a moody womanizer and he seemed way too overpowered. Luckily, he grew on me after he met Lianna.Lianna did something really stupid towards the end. (The kind of stupid they use a lot in TV, but that didn't stop me from yelling at her.)Verdict: I was a bit hesitant when this one was new adult. I've had some bad experiences with the genre, but I really liked this series so I gave it a shot and I'm glad I did. There was only one sex scene and it didn't feel just thrown in.Point of View: First Present (Maxon, Lianna)Predictability: 4 out of 5 (Where 1 is totally unpredictable and 5 is I knew what was going to happen way ahead of time.)Source: I received a free copy of this book from Netgalley, but it didn't effect my review. My Rating: 7/10 StarsMy Summary:Lianna is one on the apprentices training to become the next ruler of the water elementals, but she's only a Thrax (half angel) so the odds of her being chosen are slim. Zephyr the leader of the air elementals has been killing off water's apprentices. He attacks Lianna, but she manages to escape and stumbles into Maxon and his friends demon hunting.Maxon is the prince of the Thrax. He's spent his whole life fighting demons, and living in the spotlight of the Thrax world, since his mother is also the one responsible for sending souls to heaven or hell. He can't become her heir until he falls in love, but no one can see that happening any time soon.

The time line is exceedingly disturbing for the series as stated in some other reviews. Huge jumps with no real hints as to how we or the characters got where they are. The original characters, whom I liked fairly well, were all but ignored in this book, not that it would have made much difference. There was no real character development beyond the first book, in spite of a marriage and a child. I am also not sure what the audience this series is written for. The language and violence are too bad for even young adults. And in this book, the character and his friends are strangely misogynistic, in spite of having two strong women as role models - his mother and grandmother. Maxon only refers to Lianna by name or nickname a couple of times early on. From that point on he never refers to her as other than Beautiful. He and his friends are also extremely immature, which may be true of some of the young men their age these days, but this is supposed to be a different world. It strangely seems like a poorly written version of earth, much as a recent television series was a poorly written version of the British monarchy with a snarky foul-mouthed, alcohol swilling daughter. In addition, the editing leaves much to be desired. Sentences are poorly written, grammatical errors are rife (Note to author: please learn when to use me or I) and spelling errors are meny. I will not be purchasing or borrowing the next book. This author holds no further interest for me. The series is too loose and much too problematic in many ways to wast my time on any further.

By Carol Maxon is book four in the Angelbound series by Christina Bauer. We have skipped ahead nineteen years from the end of book three. Maxon is now twenty-two years old. He is a fierce demon hunter and has quite the reputation with the ladies. He has never fully overcome the terror he experienced, though, when he was three years old at the hands of Armageddon. He still has nightmares of his experience while he was abducted. The last year has been tough. The light seems to have gone out of him. He doesn’t take the pleasure he usually gets from either battle or romance. Well, by romance, I mean a long string of one night stands. He feels that he is not relationship material. That he is broken. But all that changed the day he met Lianna.Lianna has been an apprentice to be the next Monarkki of Water, one of four Monarkkis that rule the four elements, since she was fourteen years old. She, too, has a dark past that haunts her still. No one was more shocked than she was when she was chosen to be the successor. When she first met Maxon, she was just looking for a place to hide for a while, to prepare to be crowned as the new Monarkki. When Maxon invited her to his home she readily accepted. Was it because it was a good place to stay under the radar or because Maxon was quite the swoony, oh so handsome host? “It’s like my body was made to be held by him.”The attraction between Lianna and Maxon is pretty immediate but the trust and the bond between them grows slowly. It seems, though, that not all want Lianna to come into power. First, there is the jealous ex-boyfriend, Fisk, to deal with. At the same time, Zephyr, the Monarkki of Air, has been stealing power and using it as a high for himself and killing those he steals from. He wants Lianna’s new power and will do anything to get it. Zephyr needs to be stopped and Maxon and his friends find themselves right in the middle of it. Maxon, though will do whatever it takes to protect Lianna.“What’s important is that she brought you back. You started smiling again, man. Lianna brought our friend and prince back to us. We’ll do anything for her.”I really enjoyed this book and seeing the man Maxon has grown in to. At the same time it was great to revisit Maxon’s parents. The book builds, of course, to the ultimate epic battle which had my adrenaline in overdrive. And I loved the ending. The synopsis of the book says you could enjoy this as a stand alone which I guess you could but why miss how it all started? You would enjoy it so much more if you start at the beginning and enjoy the whole series. I look forward to the next book due out in about six months.

Have enjoyed the author's science fiction works. Looking forward to the new short stories mentioned in "About The Author". Thanks Mike.

Wild, Wild West Meets Magic and Science By BornUnderPunches This fast-paced adventure tale follows the adventures of Jericho Sims, a cowboy who seems to have a knack of getting into unusual situations. In this story, after being injured, he finds himself in a laboratory in the middle of nowhere, getting a tour from two family members who have been creating wonders and abominations in it.I liked how the author throws the reader right into the middle of the action, and how he uses familiar archetypes, but mixes things together in an unpredictable way. If you're a fan of cowboy tales, or of fantasy that mixes two genres together, you'll want to check out this story. Note: this is a short story, rather than a full-length novel, so keep that in mind when you're reading it. Enjoy!

The Nightstalkers are back, and the world needs them now more than ever.

I'm never disappointed, as Mayer has a rare storytelling gift. His pacing is taut and nicely plot-linked. His characters are never cardboard. Even his villains -- at least those of them that are human -- are absorbing, identifiable and compelling. The concepts he presents are plausible and filled with unanswered questions to tantalize the reader. With The Book of Truths, however; he's turned his own genre on its ear and raised the bar to an entirely new level. He has always investigated the intelligence artifacts and internal motivations that follow special services operatives, but for the first time, he has broached some possibilities that are deeply disturbing, rising from the clandestine nature of our nuclear weapons past as well as from the nature of command itself. The threats that arise are chilling, and very believable. Completing this read, I was struck by not only how ever-present the threat of runaway power is, but also by a hope that the kind of protective services he has based this series on, actually exist in some form.We need looking after, especially our increasingly threatened democracy. Bob Mayer shines the light of speculative military fiction upon our inheritance from the Cold War era. This inheritance is a darkness that needs to be revealed to insure a viable future for our children. This important book gave me a great deal to think about. If you have an interest in politics, military intrigue and the recent past or if you are just trying to find an entertaining read that will kick your brain into high gear, this book will do all those jobs and more.

It's full of political secrets and black ops that carry the reader on secret missions to unknown caves where prisoners are taken deep in the mountains and questioned in top secret ways. This is how Cherry Tree, a truth serum is unleashed. It turns out the serum is a pathogen and is air borne in the way it infects people via Washington DC. Imagine! A truth serum in Washington!A woman known only as The Keep has a book of secrets which she updates. The book's been gathering the secrets of the White House throughout history. The Keep is going to be very busy with the latest crazy goings on in the White House. There are nuclear bombs, a crazy general, some history and little known facts thrown in the mix which makes for a very entertaining read. Bob Mayer writes an entertaining thriller that might contain more truth than fiction. I read this book for a change of pace and really enjoyed it.

Very little of the book was about the Nightstalkers and what there was did not live up to their previous exploits. Would have been an okay book if it had been about the Book of Truths and not used the Nightstalkers name to entice me.

Staff Sergeant Winthrop Carter only enlisted in the army for the steady pay. When he cheated on the Special Forces’ final exam, he never expected his actions would get him drafted into the Nightstalkers ― an elite team with a mysterious mission and even more mysterious leader. For decades, Rifts have been opening and unleashing bloodthirsty alien life forms into our reality. The Nightstalkers’ goal is to shut down these breaches and stop the beings that emerge from rampaging out of control. While still integrating with his unusual teammates ― including a sociopath, a Black Ops washout, and a contemporary MacGyver ― Carter gets his first taste of interdimensional action when a Rift opens inside a gated community. With half a dozen deadly invaders threatening the residents, the Nightstalkers must hunt down and eliminate the aliens before they break through containment and wreak havoc on an unsuspecting world.

By Richard Sutton I'm not a big reader of Military Thrillers as a steady diet, but that said, I never miss a new Bob Mayer novel. Lots has been said about his taut action pacing, authentic conversant style and technical research. No question that all of that works, but about halfway into Nightstalkers I asked myself what holds me in his work, and it is the un-erring humanity of his characters and their interactions. Every writer in the genre knows how to display team connections and the amazing skill that special ops teams especially, develop from their mutual trust. Bob Mayer goes the extra step, though. He lets the reader in on why each character is drawn to their service, why it helps them on a personal level. Their flaws and their fears are riveting, honest and connect me to the story better than the character familiarity some writers cultivate. To a degree I haven't found in many other thriller writer's work, with the exception of John LeCarre, he fleshes out all his characters with real feelings and real lives. He also has an engaging sense of humor throughout some of the most imagination-probing action I've yet read. I also like the fact that he has a sense of freedom when it comes to the plot and with working scenes and new unexpected characters into the mix. This book is a blend of traditional military thriller and scifi and it works. There are no cardboard figures here, so pay attention. I recommend it for anyone who needs an absorbing, exciting read that leaves you with a satisfying lift at the end. Of course, not all the questions are answered. I've got many I'm sure he'll answer in the next installment.

Bob Meyers creates an interesting story with alot of action. The characters however are never developed enough to make the book a "never put it down, can't wait to finish" story. The story line is interesting but some developments in the book are very difficult to accept. IE. A 16 year old who can think and reason more so than a highly specialized team was just a bit over the edge. In fact the team was developed like they were just automaton characters who think the same and are narrow minded, blindly follow procedure with no thought, while the 16 year old was the most developed character in the book. I've enjoyed the entire Area 51 series, hopefully the next book in this sequence will be more character driven with a story and not the other way around.

Truncale Even though I love science fiction movies, I usually do not have that same passion for science fiction books. However, this one (Area 51: Nightstalkers)proved to be an exception. The characters, action, drama and flow of the story kept me turning the pages. The author (Bob Mayer) knows how to spin a story by combining just the right amount of action combined with smart dialogue. Many science fiction books I have read in the past often lost me in the complexity of the plot, but this was not the case reading this novel. In fact, the story was easy to follow and since it is an adult science fiction book, it did not insult my intelligence. In fact, this is a book that at times requires some degree of understanding and knowledge of real science and science fiction.I also love stories about elite teams of experienced commandos. In this respcet, some parts of this book reminded me of the many Navy SEAL combat books of Richard Marcinko that I have read and reviewed. The colorful names given these "Nightstalkers" (Moms, Nada, Kirk etc)was also unique and interesting. In conclusion, if you like adult science fiction stories filled with action you will want to read this book.Rating: 4 Stars. The plot and characters are complex, but the action is fast and very visual as this 14 year old author draws on his brief experience as a black belt martial artist and gifted musician. I am looking forward to his 2nd and 3rd books already in progress..

Writing Theology Well 2nd Edition: A Rhetoric for Theological and Biblical Writers, by Lucretia B. Yaghjian

Review

“It is imperative that theologians learn to write coherently and with ready access for a general audience - and not simply for each other. No one can help us to do this better than Lucretia Yaghjian. This volume will tutor all theological writers to write in more reasonable ways.” ―Thomas Groome, Boston College, USA

“Writing Theology Well has been my go to text to recommend to theological students and writing resource centers since its publication. Not only does Lucretia Yaghjian have incredible technical skills as a teacher of the craft of writing, but she brings to the task a deep passion for the subject matter, as well as a compassionate understanding of fledging theological and biblical writers. At its best this book evokes the "voice" and imagination of the student while it instructs in rhetoric. This welcome new edition updates this valuable book, including writing in digital environments. It is an invaluable resource for students, faculty, librarians and theological educators everywhere.” ―Sheryl Kujawa-Holbrook, Claremont School of Theology, USA

“In 2006 I wrote that the first edition of this book on writing theology was incomparable in its combination of theory practice, quality, depth and style. And now, almost ten years later, Lucretia Yaghjian expands the breadth of her coverage to second-language English writers and to all of us caught up in a comprehensive digital environment. In a brilliant and yet transparent way she leads young and mature theologians into a new technological and cultural context of teaching, studying and writing. She has taught this old dog new tricks, and I am grateful.” ―Roger Haight, S.J., Union Theological Seminary, USA

“What a wise book! What a pleasant book! What a helpful book! The book reflects Yaghjian's special background, literature as it is well and interestingly written, graced with a conversation with leading figures in the field. There is in this book so much practical wisdom concerning the craft of writing. For a beginner, an absolutely necessary guide; for those who have been writing for years, a welcome and informative reminder of what makes theological writing readable and pointed. This should be required reading for graduate students (and their teachers).” ―Jerome H. Neyrey (Now Emeritus), University of Notre Dame, USA

About the Author Lucretia Yaghjian is Director of the The WRITE Program at Episcopal Divinity School, USA and is on Adjunct Faculty of the Boston College School of Theology and Ministry, USA.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A solid guide to theological writing for some theological contexts By Spencer The book consists of four parts. Yaghjian begins by discussing theological rhetoric. This includes considering the context of the writing, focusing on inquiry, reflection, and persuasion, and using tools of identification, correlation, suspicion and construction. Part Two deals with the task of research, documenting that research well, and some chapters on exegesis and hermeneutics. The third part emphasizes writing style, with a focus on discovering one’s voice and the use of analogy, metaphor, etc. This section also deals with some basics of sentence and paragraph construction and delves into the vital art of revision. The fourth section focuses on writing in “new contexts,” which goes from the writing of international students, to various forms of online writing.Writing Theology Well is a volume that contains many of the basic elements of a writing guide. There are helpful guidelines and checklists for the revision process, some ideas about structuring arguments, and a healthy emphasis on writing techniques that aid clear communication. As a guide to writing, this volume has the necessary framework to be helpful. The promise in a book like this is that it tailored specifically for a particular type of writing, namely, theological writing. As I transitioned from my undergrad in English to writing for a technical audience in nuclear power to taking seminary courses, there were often points of frustration where a tool that I had used in a previous life was no longer acceptable. For this reason Writing Theology Well held out the promise of a helpful tool that I could benefit from and that I’d recommend to others. In the end, this is probably a very fine book for a particular context. Yaghjian puts the fundamentals of writing on display in a way that is consistent with the best “how-to” manuals. Her emphasis on planning, revising, and structure are right on the mark. This is a volume that many will probably find helpful for writing, but most likely not in more conservative contexts.Note: I received a gratis copy of this book from the publisher with no expectation of a positive review. This is an edited version of a review previously posted at [...]

The inhabitants of Last Chance, New Mexico, could not be more pleased. Dr. Jessica McLeod has opened an office right on Main Street. Andy Ryan, the best athlete the little town ever produced, has ended his short career in the NFL and has come home to coach the mighty Pumas of Last Chance High. Unfortunately, Dr. Jess immediately gets off on the wrong foot when she admits that she's never seen a football game, isn't really interested in doing so, and, in fact, doesn't know a first down from a home run. Meanwhile, Coach Ryan is discovering that it's not easy to balance atop the pedestal the town has put him on. When this unlikely pair is drawn together over the future of a young player--whose gifts may lie in the laboratory rather than on the football field--they begin to wonder if they might have a future together as well. With the flair that has made her Last Chance books a favorite among readers of contemporary fiction, Cathleen Armstrong draws on the passion Americans have for the traditions of small-town high school football.

I wanted to love this book By Becky I wanted to love this book, it has all the makings of an extraordinary, entertaining novel, but somehow it missed the mark. You never get to understand Jess and Ryan's characters, and the time frame when their relationship was developing is skipped over. On the flip side, many of the characters from the last 3 books are entertaining, well written, and their interactions enjoyable. Last Chance Hero is light hearted, clean, and entertaining, just don't expect to much from Jess and Ryan but enjoy the other Characters.I was given this book free for my honest review from Revell Publishing.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. It was OK... By lor369 Last Chance Hero is about a woman who moves to a small town and struggles to fit in, whether it is eating chili or liking football, as well as her budding relationship with a former NFL football player who has returned home to coach the high school team. He has his own struggles, managing his team, living up to the expectations of his hometown, and relationship issues with his dad.The book was OK, but I couldn’t really get into the storyline or connect with the characters. When I read a book, I like it when the book builds up to something really major and then that major event happens. That didn’t really happen in this book. I also felt that there were too many characters in the book and too many sub-storylines that never really got developed…Jess’s faith journey, Maria and her son, Sue and her daughter, etc. I especially thought that the sub-storyline with Andy and his dad had potential…but that wasn’t really expanded upon and ended too quickly. I also felt that the book ended a little to abruptly, as if something more needed to happen.I also felt that the football storyline and the pressures to like football was a little overdone. I felt like Jess gave in to the pressures as an attempt to make Andy and the townfolks happy, which seems out of character for an intelligent woman who is a doctor.Rating: 3 out of 5 starsA preview copy of this book was provided for free through the Revell Book Tour program in exchange for a fair and honest review.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Pleasant but Non-compelling By Tracey Cramer-Kelly This makes two books in this series I have read. This one I picked up because it had a female small-town doctor as a lead character. Like the other book, this one was just too slow for my tastes. Usually there is a build-up to an event that changes the characters, or there is a bad guy/girl to keep thing interesting. The struggles here were all internal, and mostly on Andy’s side (Jess’s were all so minor). I thought Andy’s ability to stay good-natured and balance the grand dreams/pressure everyone was laying on him was a bit unrealistic. I would have welcomed more depth to his character. There didn’t seem to be deep, strong feelings for each other, leaving me with the impression that they got together because the other was OK to hang out with (and maybe they were the “obvious” pairing in this small town). There were many sub-plots that could have been interesting to develop (like potential child abuse, or Andy’s relationship with his father) that seemed glossed over. It also didn’t go into the faith elements present in the other book. The result is that I don’t know what the characters really believe, about their faith or each other. It’s as if the author had second thoughts about (or was told to tone down) the presence of faith in the series. So, a pleasant but non-compelling read.

We have great characters that have different books but can come together into one mega throw down....it's like the Justice League or Avengers. That being said this book focuses on Alex and his start in a business that uses his unique abilities to help people and maybe make a little cheddar on the side. The great thing this book does is that it reminds us that not every plot needs to revolve around some world ending catastrophe or villain. The stakes are relatively small but we still enjoy the journey. Alex is growing in his powers and becoming more comfortable in his new role. We also see how married life is treating him and how having a good woman there can make all the difference.....dude would be completely lost without Cindy. If you haven't read any of Mr. Bullion's books you need to start with "Demonspawn" and go from there. Then be introduced to Jack Kursed one of my favorite characters of all time....seriously he is awesome. Read these books if you even remotely like urban fantasy and weird stuff.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Love it By juxta_posed Another great installment in a fantastic series. Love the whole world that this author has made and how all the pieces fit together. I was a little confused with how the last book went (Broken Home) but after rereading the series I really liked how it tied together without it being explicit. This book picks up the story of Alex and while a few other characters put in an appearance or are mentioned, the action follows Alex. He continues to kick butt in the supernatural world without it turning him jaded. it sounds a little thick, but the way Mr. Bullion writes his characters, it all works and makes sense. The biggest problem I have with these books is they just do not take long to get through. this one is no different, the length is fine, and well worth the price point, but the narrative flows well and I get caught up in it and find that I have stayed up until 2 in the morning finishing it.While the book gives enough background that you could pick it up without having read the other books in the series, I highly recommend going back to get through them. there is enough background and different characters that you will not suffer from burnout before you get caught up.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Starting a business is never easy! By m. Libell 4 Stars for this excellent addition to Mr. Bullion's Damned & Cursed series. This book picks up soon after the last so there is no gap in continuity. Demons LLC follows Alex Teague as he begins his investigative/exorcism business with a couple of cases, both of them managing to add characters I would expect to hear from later in the series.I won't go into details, but we have ghosts, demons, vampires, and a sexy wife all getting time in the story. The book was a lot of fun and it showcases some of Alex's more interesting abilities, though I have to say I think he needs to always have Cindy along to do the heavy thinking.I can't help picturing the bar fight scene and how it would have turned out if Jack had been there, and that is the true strength of Mr. Bullion's writing, you become invested in the world he created and you find yourself thinking of the various characters as friends.Of course with the start of a business, Alex may find himself confronting a monster that no amount of power can save him from...the IRS.Excellent book at a great price so buy it and enjoy.

We live in a skeptical age. People—especially young people—express doubts about Christian faith. In this thoughtful eight week study Bishop Scott Jones, author of The Wesleyan Way, partners with his son Rev. Arthur Jones, to address hard questions that all of us face when considering faith, religion, and the church. The questions include:

Can only one religion be true? Why is there suffering and evil? How can I believe in science and creation? How can I believe in a God I can’t prove? Can I trust the Old Testament? Are marriage, sex, and family life religious issues? Was Jesus' resurrection real? Why do Christians disagree about so many things?

The message is strong and clear: Don't let your questions stop you from accepting God's invitation to faith. Engage your doubt, and you may find you are closer to God on the other side.

By KimSAUMC Meyers This is a book with many different perspectives; everyday Christians, seekers, theologians, scientist, history, etc. The book can be read with ease, but needs time for reflection. It has practical applications to deep questions that we have all asked about our faith. Thanks for a book that will be the start of many conservations.

If you are a "Dyed in the wool" Christian, firm in your faith you'll applaud the vignettes at the end of each chapter on how to speak to your skeptical friends, who, if they are skeptical, will probably look at the "answers" that are given and say, "yeah, that and $3.00 will get you a latte. Just not much here worth reading or arguing about.

They tackle everyday questions about which many of us, Christian and otherwise, wonder every day. The material is simply organized into only a few chapters, each addressing one topic. Each chapter ends with a brief synopsis that could provide the basis for further discussion in all settings, casual or formal. The topics discussed require no advanced theological background, as they are topics usually at the forefront of any discussion about faith-based life. I highly recommend to anyone wanting a first (but hopefully not last) edition explaining the key foundations of Christianity, whether firm or uncertain in belief.

STAYING ALIVE - AND INVOLVED By Red Rock Bookworm AMONG THIEVES by John Clarkson is well written, action packed mystery that allows the reader to identify with the books chief protagonist, James Beck, a wrongly convicted ex-con who, with a group of fellow ex-cons, attempts to right the wrong done to a woman named Olivia Sanchez by a couple of guys named Milstein and Crane, the big-wigs at a Manhattan brokerage firm. Seems that Olivia, in the course of performing her job, has stumbled on some questionable multi-million dollar transactions, a discovery that lead to her being assaulted and then fired from her job.Olivia is the niece of one of Beck's ex-con buddies Manny Guzman and Manny is out for blood. Beck convinces Manny that murder is not the answer and to let him handle the problem. Little does Beck realize that Olivia's employment problem is just the tip of the an iceberg that connects Milstein and Crane to deals involving illegal multi-million dollar investments, the Russian mob, illegal arms deals, as well as a clandestine U.S. government agency.Beck, with the help of side-kick DeMarco Jones and a group of colorful cohorts are forced into a power play that expands into an ever widening nonstop war with not only the arms dealer and some brutal Russian mobsters with the NYPD getting involved as well. There are numerous interesting and powerfully written plot twists that keep not only Beck and his cronies on their toes but keep the reader guessing as well. This novel has it all: an interesting story line, plenty of action, and an admirable protagonist - - - all the things that most readers of action/mystery novels love and look forward to. Move over Jack Reacher, Elvis Cole and Joe Pike there's a new bad-ass in town and a new movie just begging to be made.

By Bookreporter Don’t let AMONG THIEVES get past you. There are many worthy books being published on a weekly basis, so it’s difficult to decide what to read. But John Clarkson’s latest, a hard-boiled and hard-driving crime caper novel, stands out among them.It has been a while --- 11 years, a veritable eternity in the publishing world --- since Clarkson has favored us with a novel, and AMONG THIEVES is the perfect vehicle to showcase his return. The book is set primarily in the Red Hook neighborhood of Brooklyn, an ideal place for the almost nondescript bar that serves as Ground Zero for most of what occurs. The establishment is owned by James Beck (his identity well-hidden behind a business entity), an ex-convict who hires and assists fellow ex-cons. Beck is introduced in one of the best opening paragraphs I’ve read recently, which is right up there with THE LAST GOOD KISS by James Crumley and THE FRIENDS OF EDDIE COYLE by George V. Higgins. The jumpstart of the book is simple enough. One of Beck’s friends and associates, a hard case named “Manny” Guzman, wants someone killed. Guzman has a cousin, Olivia Sanchez, who has done very well working for Summit, a New York investment firm. Olivia is special to Manny, having been his sole visitor and contact with the outside world while he was doing a long and difficult prison stretch. Olivia has now come to Manny in dire straits, reporting that she has incurred the wrath of one of the firm’s partners, Alan Crane, who runs one of the firm’s most successful hedge funds. After becoming aware of some questionable transactions that Crane was making and mentioning it to Frederick Milstein, the firm’s owner, Crane violently confronted her. By the time the dust settled and the smoke cleared, Olivia had broken fingers and was out of a job.Manny sees things very simply: Crane needs to die. Beck, however, sees an alternative, one that has the possibility of enriching his outreach program to ex-convicts while extracting a measure of revenge. He begins to exercise the street equivalent of due diligence and almost immediately doesn’t like what he sees. Crane’s fund is tied closely and dug in deeply with a ruthless Russian arms trader who sees any impediment to profit as something that must be removed immediately and effectively. Still, Beck starts softly (at least for him) by confronting Milstein and suggesting that a de facto severance package for Olivia would be appropriate. When the “request” initiates a violent rebuttal, Beck decides to go a different and more dramatic route. The more he learns, though, the more unsettled he becomes. There is much more to Olivia’s firing, and to Summit, than initially was revealed. Still, Beck has a number of assets, namely the loyalty of his crew, extreme firepower, and an innate cunning that enables him to plan two or three steps ahead in a world where allies and adversaries can change in a New York minute and a violent fistfight can end in a wary handshake. By the time the book reaches its powerful and explosive conclusion(s), some things have changed while others have stayed the same (and not always for the better).AMONG THIEVES is fabulous, pure and simple. Clarkson, who also works as a screenwriter, brings some finely honed cinematic chops to the gritty and occasionally darkly humorous narrative in this tale of the people who live constantly on the edge and behind unmarked doors in neighborhoods where most of us never stop if we travel through at all. One of the best pieces of news I received this past week is that Clarkson is working on the second book of a conceived series involving Beck and company. I hope we don’t have to wait another decade for it, but it most certainly would be worth it.Reviewed by Joe Hartlaub.

By Cheryl Stout First of all, I enjoyed this book - mostly. At 400+ pages, I feel that the author could have edited out at least 25% of the content and had a much cleaner, more streamlined story. There was way too much detail, in my opinion, of the brokerage business. As a reader of fiction, I want to have a story flow, with enough detail to keep me informed about the storyline but not so much that the book starts feeling like a textbook. And there was an over-abundance of info. But other than those things, I liked the book. I think it would make a good movie. The main protagonist, James Beck, served eight years in prison for killing a cop (in a bar fight) and then got out on a technicality. He is way tough and has a crew of ex-cons, gang members, and other friends that are just as tough. The people they go up against are ruthless, cruel men including a whole slew of Russians, some mercenaries, and more. The impetus getting everyone riled up is a beautiful, sexy risk and compliance manager (I do believe) at a brokerage firm and the brokerage firm is a big part of this story.Blood and guts, twists and turns - all wrapped up in this current day thriller. I hope we see more of James Beck and his crew in future books.

Dawn of Wonder (The Wakening Book 1), by Jonathan Renshaw

Review "This is one of the best novels I've read all year. Readers will know what it's like to be transported to a magical, compelling world within a book." Five stars. San Francisco Book Review. "An excellent fantasy coming of age story. Each of the characters is filled out with a range of emotions and actions. Similarly, their interactions with one another are filled with amusement and feeling. Renshaw's world building and character development are just incredible. There were many times during the listen that I actually laughed out loud! It is definitely a long book, but it lets the reader soak in every part of it with all the detail. The plot is dynamic and there are many highs and lows for Aedan and his companions, which keep it from getting boring with its length. I actually wanted it to keep going! The end is satisfyingly set up for the next novel, which I'm really looking forward to." Audiobook Reviewer"Renshaw's talent for building unique worlds and characters, and simply letting them loose to face their circumstances, is on full display. Dawn of Wonder's crisp flow coupled with constant plot and character development in a fascinating world will reel readers in for a wonderful reading experience." Recommended - The US Review of Books"I can't describe the plot of Dawn of Wonder because it is very much its own story.  It's the kind of story where you say "I think I'll give this a try for three paragraphs and then move on if it doesn't work out" only to find yourself unable to put it down even for your doctor's appointment. It's worth at least a look.  If it's not for you, set it aside.  (That's what I told myself.  Two days later I came up for air and have hardly stopped raving the book's praises since.) I flat out love this book." Book in the Bag"Mr. Renshaw's writing is simply astounding. His elegant, poetic prose turned a very good story with themes that touched my heart into one that is wondrous. One of the finest fantasy novels I've read in the past few years, period." Davis Ashura, award winning author of A Warrior's Path"Dawn of Wonder foregoes 'quick and saccharine' for the satisfying choice of 'long and compelling', building the details of a vast production. I can't wait for book two. If this first story is any indicator, it will be along the lines of a Robert Jordan 'Wheel of Time' epic series." Midwest Book Review

Good for all readers, awesome new coming-of-age fantasy By John I was amazed by this new fantasy coming-of-age novel, which exceeded all of my expectations. The book is HUGE, but I read the whole thing almost non-stop in two days, constantly intrigued by the mysteries of the created world and life of the main character and supporting characters. The story is told entirely from the main character's point of view, which I really enjoyed, as the constantly switching perspectives of most new fantasy works often annoy me. Although the main character is a young teenager for the whole story, his occasionally childish perspective makes me think of that age more with nostalgia than annoyance at the MC's immaturity (which usually happens in books with young MCs). All of the characters are realistic in their actions and motivations, and, although there is typically a clear line between the good guys and bad guys, no character is perfect and struggles with various faults and temptations. The book even addresses on more serious topics such as abuse, cultural intolerance, and religion, though never in a way that feels preachy or overdone (more in the way of addressing serious topics that are real and need to be addressed in the life of the main character). The main character (though young) has enough faults to be relatable but enough strengths to be admired and someone I would like to be (an important and difficult balance that many books have a difficult time maintaining). Additionally, you get a TON of reading material for a cheap price, with no discernible editing errors (very unexpected and amazing in an indie author). Also, despite handling some heavy topics, this book has content suitable for all ages of readers (no cursing, sex scenes, or gratuitous violence), although the writing style is in no way simplistic or dumbed-down for younger readers. When thinking of what the target audience of this book probably is, I realize that I can't imagine an age past 10 that I would not immensely enjoy this novel. The only possible faults with this book that I can come up with are that it follows a very overdone fantasy trope (a gifted young boy's coming-of-age in an academy) and that the next books in the series are not out yet. Despite following an overdone theme, this book brings me back to why that theme is so popular, and in my opinion is second only to (if not even with) Rothfus' Kingkiller Chronicles, one of my all time favorites. Even following standard rules of this genre, everything feels very realistic for youths of that age (I especially liked the way the young romances were handled). This is also very much the first book in a series, and there are many potential mysteries and avenues for development of characters and the created world that are hinted at in this book but left to future books to encounter more thoroughly. All in all, I LOVED this book, more than any I've read in years, and can't wait for the next in the series. I will soon be recommending this to both friends and enemies: friends to share in the enjoyment of this first book, and enemies to share the suffering of waiting for book 2.

Bailey It's been awhile since a book has captured my interest so much that I had to read it every spare moment. This was one of those books. I absolutely devoured it. In fact, I read all 700 pages in a day of hardcore reading. Not saying it's the greatest book I have ever read, but it's most definitely one of my favorites this year. The writing is crisp and clean, especially for an independent author. I can't count how many times I have bought an independent author's book and received what is essentially a rough draft. Not the case for Dawn of Wonder. Although I am sure there are mistakes, I can't remember any.I also like the characters. They are well fleshed out. They don't conform to many of the most common fantasy tropes which makes them all the more interesting. The plot also is devoid of the most common tropes. There is no great evil that the main character is prophesied to defeat. The world is more in shades of grey than pure black and white. Frankly, I am tired of the same ole, same ole and this book delivers that something different that I needed. With a personal rating of 4.5 stars, I recommend this to all fantasy lovers.

In order to get the most from this review, you need a base of what kinds of books I enjoy. I love Brandon Sanderson (The Stormlight Archive is my favorite series currently), The Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss, and The Gentleman Bastards by Scott Lynch to name a few.Now on to why you are here. This book has many elements that I have been looking for. Too many fantasy authors attribute an all powerful character to an interesting one. Within 50 pages, the author has the character besting 5 other trained individuals and by the end of the series, they might as well be facing the army by themselves. Another problem is creating intensity. How do you have down time when an army is invading your land or something troubling is happening? It is hard on the reader to stay in a consistent stressful time. More for the sake that we start rolling our eyes and say "Of COURSE that would happen now".This book does not have those issues. The reader ages with the main character. The initial thoughts from the character are a mixture of immature and insightful. This is the delicate balance of writing a 13 year old character. You have to write them including things that they would do at that age, yet still be interesting and believable. This book stays true to it's character as he ages. He has flaws and moments in the book where you laugh and cringe for him. For all those interested, the female characters in this book are well-written as well. They aren't in need of saving and aren't a guy in a woman's body.In short, this book has as realistic characters as a fantasy book can come with page turning intensity mixed with laugh out loud moments. I believe the author said it took 10 years to write this book (with a job on the side) and you can tell he put it to good use. I am so excited for the next 3 in the series.

I waited for "Revelation" with excitement having enjoyed the previous Kid Sensation novels By Michael Brewer I waited for "Revelation" with excitement having enjoyed the previous Kid Sensation novels. One thing I quickly dreaded though was the return of Jim's brother Paramount. I thought: great - Round 2 - not exciting! Well,....the story turned out far better than I hoped including things between Jim & Paramount & we're left with a rather exciting cliff-hanger that makes me look forward to the next Kid Sensation book!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great as usual. Solid part of the series. By Sci-fi & Fantasy Lover Kevin continues to deliver. This book builds on the previous books but is also a solid story itself with a bit of a cliffhanger ending. The biggest negative is having to wait for book 5.
