Finding Hope in Savannah, by Melissa Wardwell

About the Author I was born and raised in a small mid-Michigan community and live there still with my family. I married my high school sweetheart, Jonathan and we share 3 amazing children, all of whom we home school. Before leaving the workforce, I worked at a local bridal salon for nine years. I enjoy taking pictures, reading, and leisurely rides with my husband on our motorcycle. All my stories revolve around women who are mothers; single mothers, widowed mothers, young mothers, married mothers, and even women who have a mother's heart but no children of her own. I hope that each story touches your heart, gives you hope, or just gives you a moment away from the chaos of life.

By Deanna Stevens Loss of both of her parents, an unplanned pregnancy 13 years ago, witnessing a murder on the beach from her balcony and now she is going into hiding from her boyfriend now the murderer. Elizabeth has to make a quick move to Isle of Hope, Georgia and here she finds her son's father working in the police station.. Elizabeth's life is a mess and she has to figure out what to do about it. I enjoyed the suspense, drama and the thread of faith and hope that was throughout this story. The idea that the killer was certainly looking for her and the hope of reuniting with the man she fell in love with 13 years ago kept me wondering just how this was going to play out. Mystery, romance and an exciting ending! I was gifted a copy for my opinion which is.. I liked it, it was interesting from the start to the exciting finish!

Finding Hope in Savannah By Linda Husvar ★★★★★ From Page One we see gripping drama and fast-paced suspense as Liz and her son, Matt, flee from Boston to Savannah's Isle of Hope. Leaving home and career on the spur of the moment, Liz shows tenacious survival skills. Liz and Jake grow from friendship to romance while struggling with their faith. The author skillfully portrays loss and eventual healing in the midst of danger. I loved the depth and wisdom Aunt Donna offered as she facilitated healing for Liz's losses and the development of a new family. I received an early copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review. Highly recommended!.

Crimson Rain, by Tex Leiko

About the Author Not much is known about Tex’s early years. Many are unsure of how old he is or where exactly he came from. He has been heard on a few occasions telling people his first memory is of awakening in a laboratory in which they were testing a chemical known as TXZ-871. This chemical compound is known to erode the mind and cause delusions of grandeur. After several doses the patient is rendered psychologically insane but left with extreme amounts of creativity. Some test subjects in the trial were even able to project their own mental image of themselves externally, resulting in the morphing of size, shape and form. Tex has been documented as one of the prime examples of this and nobody is really sure what he actually looks like. Due to the damage caused by this drug, Tex believes himself to be a self employed spy and travels the world seeking clues to his own origin. He says that there are secret messages encoded in his literary works and that others that have been exposed to the compound will be able to decode it. His residence, is always changing. His look is never the same, and many say he doesn’t even exist but is merely the apparition of another test subject.

The characters show us reflections of ourselves in both their courage and determination but also their struggle against their own short comings. The will to overcome adversity and to create a new world leaves us to ponder the possibilities in our own lives. Leiko weaves an intricate plot that will keep you intrigued from start to finish and hungering for more.

It is about post-apocolyptic war. Be prepared for not only fighting, mutants, technology, and violence, but detailed torture scenes and blow-by-blow accounts of some stomach-turning scenes. It's pretty gruesome in parts. That aside, I found the general story line to be engaging, if not frighteningly possible. It's the possibilities that really make this story stand out. Genetic modifications and gene splicing are rampant in this version of our world. It's just barely recognizable as our world, however, because the planet Earth has had so many apocolyptic downfalls that there isn't much left in the way of civilization. Money is power; so much so that the government of Alexarien has made EVERYTHING legal, from murder to changing the weather, as long as you can pay the price.Tex Leiko has thrown together some unlikely protagonists; a drug addicted supergenius doctor, a freed sex slave/contract killer/renegade leader, and a resourceful yet desperate lethal crusader out to crush those who destroyed his family. All have something to fight for, all want to improve their world (or what's left of it), but all have to get past their deep-rooted character flaws to succeed.I believe the characters were well written, the world is pretty fully painted and the story line is fast paced and full of action. I think there's a possibility for a sequel, but things were mostly wrapped up enough to not be super disappointed if there isn't another. Just a bit of teaser near the end that, if followed in full, could totally turn the storyline in a completely new direction.I'm not overly thrilled with the ending; I didn't get quite what I was hoping for, but it certainly wasn't anything I saw coming, so it was entertaining in its own way. Again, if this is turned into a series, I hope certain things can be changed to a new direction and maybe some solid hope will surface eventually. I think my main problem with the ending is I felt like there really wasn't anything left to fight for. I wondered whether the shreds of possibility dropped here and there like cherry pits on a hiking trail could come together later, whether they'll dehydrate and become useless in the wake of all that happened during the rebellion.Only time will tell, I suppose.Katherine X, Kindle Book Review.**The KBR received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. The thing about it all, is that it is a possibility that some or everything that is written about can become a reality. This is a quick read for everyone that picks it up, since it flows very smooth. Tex does a very good job with the timeline that is followed throughout. This is not like others where the reader becomes more concerned that the timeline is off, rather than just enjoying the story. All of the cool weapons and enhancements through out the story keep you wanting more of this "James Bond meets Star Wars" hybrid of a story. I will count the days until the next installment of the saga is released. Tex, get to writing the next book!

Action, adventure, mystery, and romance By Erin G Vanished in Venice is a refreshing action-adventure filled with an intriguing mystery and sexy romance. Rachel Sanders is out to uncover a mystery. Nick Marshall is out to recover his family's legacy. What do these two have in common? A long lost cross which is at the heart of both. Can Rachel and Nick work together or will their long time family rivalry stand in the way?I enjoyed the interesting characters and their colorful back stories. Rachel was a brilliant and strong female lead. Her past and relationship with her parents have caused her to be cautious of others, especially Nick. Nick Marshall was persistent, cunning, sexy, and sweet. They both have so much drive and passion but they have suffered from loss and betrayal. They must learn to trust one another if they are going to be able to find the cross and get out of Italy alive. Both Rachel and Nick grew and changed throughout the story and so did their relationship. It was fun to watch them move from instant attraction to hatred to having serious feelings for each other. Stacey Joy Netzel made all these changes feel natural and realistic, allowing for a deeper connection with these characters. So often you read a mystery where they spend the whole book getting nowhere and then at the end it all comes together. That was not the case with Vanished in Venice. Netzel created an intricate mystery which she wove into the story with precision. Clues were revealed bit by bit and it took work to put the pieces together. Combine the mystery with solid action and adventure and you have a recipe for success.Stacey Joy Netzel delivers a strong novel packed full of deception, intrigue, danger, and sexual chemistry so strong, it's palpable. She pulls you in with a complex mystery and keeps you reading until the very last word.

It certainly will be honest!I when I first read book one of this series, I was amazed. I didn't think any book could be better than that one. It became my favorite book. Impatiently, I waited for book two to come out. Well, it was as good as book one, or maybe a bit better. Then I was very impatient waiting for book three. This is my favorite! It was worth the wait. This is by my favorite series. I love Stacey's writing style. This book, like the others, captivated me from page one to the very end. It was a continous page turner. Her characters are well developed and realistic as is the story she is writing. I loved Rachel and Nick as I did the adventure they were on. It had its twist and turns to keep this book more interesting. If you liked the first two books, I think I could safely guess that you will love this one. I HIGHLY recommend this book!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Vanished doesn't disappoint. By Bev Stacey Joy Netzel meets Indiana Jones. Vanished in Venice is a great story. Rachel Sanders was born into a family of crime. While now her dad is in prison her mom is is in Venice looking for the jeweled cross that unlocks the mystery. In walks Nick Marshall who is also searching for the same cross. Nick is not a fan of the Sanders family but when he meets beautiful Rachel sparks fly. Weary of each others intent they decide to search together. They need to find it before her mother does and a few others that are also looking for it. The story has it all, intrigue, suspense, danger and a incredible ending. This can be read as a stand alone but it would be so much more interesting if you first read "Lost in Italy" and "Run to Rome". Awesome writing, Awesome book.

Public transportation grinds to a halt and stores empty of food.Lee Han, wealthy Chinese industrialist is behind the attack. Han wants to draw mainland China into a war with the west. By destroying the electrical infrastructure, his victory is almost assured. With the help of computer hacker, a rogue CIA agent, and Lee Han’s mistress, Paul Decker uncovers Han’s intentions.Normally, I get lost in political thrillers, a character in chapter 1 shows up 100 pages later, leaving me wondering, who is this person? The author takes the time to reintroduce the characters when the show up again. It amazing how one sentence can make the plot so much easier to follow.Web War is a fast pace political thriller with lots of action. If you like political thrillers, you love Web War.

By Dawn Dolly Webb Infamous Paul Decker, a character created by the genius Jeffry Weiss is at it again. I've charactarized him as the modern American 'James Bond', and he's continually living up to that name with each new book Jeffry releases. In Web War One, Paul Decker finds himself in a brittle American world. Lee Han, political leader of China, has devised the perfect plan to gain power over most of Asia while preventing the US from doing anything about it.He's began his plan by haulting all American enterprise. How? He's shut down our technology- our internet. He's essentially thrown America back 100 years, and our modern world can't handle the extreme adversity. Almost all forms of transportation are left lifeless. Our currency dwindles, and the food on our store shelves disappears. In term, America is thrown into a panicked chaos, run by citizens who fear the worst and can't handle the struggles being thrown at them.As crime breaks out in America, bigger crimes are being planned over seas. Lee Han wants to take over many other parts of Asia for the oil wealth. His plan is set and he intends to shut down the American military's internet to prevent them from responding before he can take his claim. It's Paul Decker, our James Bond of the story, that has to find a way to stop Lee Han and save the world's fate. Paul Decker enlists the help of his friends- a CIA agent and a hacker in prison to help him. And along the way he also discovers the help of Lee Han's mistress. As with all of Jeffry's stories, Web War One thrusts you into a realistic American world. A world that makes you think about our reliance on technology and our dependency on things that we really have no control of. It also forces you to think about how the manipulation of those devices could cause a fall in America's ability to stand strong. Every single one of Jeffry Weiss's books has caused me to stop and think- to truly evaluate. And amidst the addictive storylines I just can't stop reading. Web War One, is yet another book completely worth reading into.

The real villain is Lee Han, a wealthy owner of the largest fishery corporation in the world. His goal is to draw China into World War III.Read this fast-paced book. See how convoluted and devious Han can be. From cloning the ambassador, president and other key officials, he plans to take over the water rights of South Korea, Taiwan and The Philippines while raking in billions in oil. PDF Ebook Wynne's War, by Aaron Gwyn

“The book’s pacing is cinematic . . . adrenalized.” — New York Times “Rich in equestrian and military detail . . . It’d take wild horses to pull you away.” — Entertainment Weekly When Corporal Elijah Russell’s superb horsemanship is revealed during a firefight in northern Iraq, the young army Ranger is assigned to an elite Special Forces unit preparing to stage a secret mission in eastern Afghanistan. Russell’s task is to train the Green Berets — fiercely loyal to their enigmatic commander, Captain Wynne — to ride the horses they will use to execute this mission through treacherous mountain terrain. But as the team presses farther into enemy territory, the nature of the operation only becomes more mysterious and Wynne’s charismatic power takes on a darker cast. Ultimately, Russell finds himself forced to make a choice: on one side, his best friend and his most deeply held beliefs; on the other, a commanding officer driven by a messianic zeal for his mission. This taut, action-packed novel fuses the Western and the war story into a compellingly original tale. “This novel feels like Cormac McCarthy meets Tim O’Brien. I could not stop reading it.” — Philipp Meyer, author of The Son [author photo] © Mark Fortenberry

Wynne's War, by Aaron Gwyn

From Booklist In Iraq, the unhappy, loveless Corporal Elijah Russell runs into cross fire to save a beautiful Arabian horse. Miraculously, even though he’s wounded, he succeeds. The episode winds up on YouTube and comes to the attention of an obsessive commander in Afghanistan, Captain Carson Wynne. Wynne commandeers Russell for a secret mission where Russell’s job is to train horses and train Green Berets to ride them. He’s skilled at this, and Gwyn’s horse scenes are exquisite, in the bargain giving us some agreeable insight into Russell’s Oklahoma upbringing. Also, Gwyn’s combat scenes are realistic, meticulous, and passionate. But while the secret mission begins like a journey into the heart of darkness, Captain Wynne never becomes Kurtz; he’s just a smart, tough captain. The captain’s ordinariness, in tandem with Russell’s woeful-but-predictable love affair, causes the novel to veer from the high literary into a genre effort that’s long on action and short on character development. Nothing wrong with that, but the reader is left feeling that Gwyn wants to write for the movies. Wynne’s War, in fact, would make a fine movie. --John Mort

Review

"A hard-eyed depiction of modern warfare leavened slightly by its Western spirit, Gwyn's novel is rich in equestrian and military detail...it'd take wild horses to pull you away. B+" --Entertainment Weekly

"The book’s pacing is cinematic, and it echoes adrenalized silver-screen war stories like Three Kings and The Hurt Locker, as well as the gentler cross-species concerns of The Horse Whisperer." -- John Williams, The New York Times

"Gwyn depicts the eventful mission with tight dramatic control and a flair for suspenseful twists. His cleverest touch is to transplant the vintage conventions of the Western into his battle pieces...'Wynne's War' evokes John Ford’s 'The Searchers,' and the same ambiguities that surround John Wayne’s ruthlessly single-minded Ethan Edwards come to define Wynne." --The Wall Street Journal

"A straightforward, tautly written soldier’s tale where military goal, leadership, character, battlefield friendship and the degree of acceptable human sacrifice are the main concerns.”  --The Chicago Tribune's Printers Row Journal

"A work of narrative alchemy, Aaron Gwyn’s ambitious second novel, “Wynne’s War,” is a prose smelter brimming with horses, soldiers, heroism, villainy, horrific violence and unexpected tenderness…The real wonder of this novel, though, is that it’s also a page-turning romp… There’s entertainment aplenty and characters whose lives are real enough to have been lived. If you find tear stains on your shoulders when you turn the last page, they are likely yours, shed out of the sadness that only comes when you wish there were pages left to turn." – Houston Chronicle

"Gwyn’s (Dog on the Cross) story is a gripping tale of men at war in the desolate snow-capped mountains of eastern Afghanistan, and captures the essence of close combat—the terror, excitement, chaos, tension, and cruelty, as well as the harsh decisions men make under stress...its gritty realism is part of the strength." — Publishers Weekly, starred review

"The book pulsates with a verisimilitude that places readers in the war-torn mountains of Afghanistan...Many folks have wondered when American authors would begin producing memorable fiction about the Iraq-Afghanistan wars; with this well-researched, heart-pounding novel, Gwyn stakes his claim." - Library Journal

"Gwyn’s combat scenes are realistic, meticulous, and passionate…" — Booklist

"This novel feels like Cormac McCarthy meets Tim O’Brien. I could not stop reading it." — Philipp Meyer, author of The Son

“Wynne's War is a deep and beautifully written story of men, war, and madness, told by a young American master. A page-turner of poetic and savage grace, of our time but transcending it, this novel takes its rightful place among the great American literature of war.” — Nic Pizzolatto, author of Galveston, creator of HBO's True Detective

"I haven’t had this much fun as a reader in a long time. Wynne's War is a great adventure story, impeccably researched, masterfully plotted, with chapters that blur by like a hail of bullets." — Benjamin Percy, author of Red Moon

"Wynne’s War combines two of America’s great literary genres, the Western and the war story, brilliantly.  This taut, elegant, beautiful novel takes us straight to the tension at the heart of combat decision-making:  mission or men." — Nathaniel Fick, author of One Bullet Away

“Propellant storytelling in the tradition of McCarthy and Conrad. A gripping morality tale told with bristling exactitude.” – Paul Lynch, author of Red Sky in Morning

From the Inside Flap When Corporal Elijah Russell’s superb horsemanship is revealed during a firefight in northern Iraq, the young army Ranger is assigned to an elite Special Forces unit preparing to stage a secret mission in eastern Afghanistan. Elijah’s task is to train the Green Berets — fiercely loyal to their enigmatic commander, Captain Wynne — to ride the horses they will use to execute this mission through treacherous mountain terrain. But as the team presses farther into enemy territory, the nature of the operation only becomes more mysterious and Wynne’s charismatic power takes on a darker cast. Ultimately, Elijah finds himself forced to make a choice: on one side, his best friend and his most deeply held beliefs; on the other, a commanding officer driven by a messianic zeal for his mission.Based on the author’s extensive interviews with Green Berets, army Rangers, and other veterans, this taut page-turner brilliantly fuses the war novel and the Western into a compellingly original tale.

All the Pretty Horses enter the Heart of Darkness By Billz When I ordered this book from Amazon, I just wanted a mindless read--sort of a Jack Reacher goes to Afghanistan. At the same time I wanted to avoid the even more mindless macho ballyhoo of the right or ain't-it-awful malaise of the left. Just a no frills adventure in this seemingly endless war.The pace of the narrative immediately reminded me of Cormac McCarthy's "All the Pretty Horses," whom the author, Aaron Gwyn, quotes at the book's outset. Gwyn, an English professor at University of North Carolina, Charlotte, puts the lie to the oft-quoted remark from a character in one of George Bernard Shaw's novels "Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach." Gwyn teaches fiction, and this novel provides the best of all worlds--a fiction professor, doing.Fear not, though, I got the adventure I wanted in "Wynne's War," and there wasn't any gum-on-my-shoe politics. Gwyn doesn't run a writing seminar on the reader either; he writes a very well-written, fast-paced adventure. However, he does so through the eyes of an Oklahoma farm boy's steady slow and patient gait. The irony is that the book's pace still pulled me along like running along side a car with my arm caught in the door. I'm not sure how Gwyn did that, but he did.The story centers around two central characters; Corporal Elijah Russell and Captain Wynne. Russell (as he's referenced throughout the book) knows horses, and when Captain Wynne decides to sneak into Taliban territory to free POWs he sees his best shot is by horseback--quieter and more path-worthy than ATVs. Russell is picked to accompany Wynne's special force team into the mountainous border lands between Afghanistan and Pakistan because of his horse talents. With a horse whisperer's connection to the mode of transportation, Russell and Wynne's' special forces team sets off from a forward fire base in southern Afghanistan to free the POWs.The mystery of the operation centers around both the location and existence of the POWs. A mostly-crazed special forces survivor had recently been found, and he told of the POWs being held by the Taliban. Right away, this is starting to sound like Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness." Was Russell a new Marlow and Wynne, the gone-native Kurtz? Or was it something else altogether? Yes, Wynne did sound like the man whose mind was perfectly clear but whose soul had gone mad. Russell starts seeing Wynne in a different light. The man was brave and talented warrior, but were they really on their way to save POWs?As Wynne leads his small force on horseback into Taliban territory, they come into deadly conflict with 'Tangos' (Tango for Taliban just as Charlie was for Viet Cong). The rest of the dialog comes across as authentic military and instead of coded group names like "Dragon Slayer" or "Lightening Bolts" the radio group is "Underchild." "Underchild One," "Underchild Two" or "Underchild Actual." It sounded right to me, and in this case "Underchild" describes the backgrounds of the men who serve in special forces. The Acknowledgments indicate that Gwyn spent time communicating with men in different military units, and judging from the results it was time well-spent.The budding romance between Russell and Sara is subtle and deep. Sara is tough with her own issues, and she's assigned to Fire Base Dodge on the edge of Taliban territory as a medic. This little side story turns into an unexpected but delightful addition to the story, and Gwyn does it quite well. Overall, this book delivered on far more levels than I bargained for and I greedily rushed through all 250 pages much to soon. I hope to see more of Gwyn's work.

Excellent old-school military adventure, brought up-to-date with literary panache By Nathan Webster This is an old-school military adventure, written with a great deal of skill and literary panache by author Aaron Gwyn. It's an unexpected addition to the Iraq/Afghanistan war literature. The narrative used the hallmarks of genre action to lure me in - but the great writing actually made me care. With only a couple reviews, I'll stay away from spoilers, don't worry - but the book makes clear that a young Army Ranger is sucked into a Special Forces in deep Afghanistan commanded by an officer with unclear, and increasingly sinister, motivations. The author credits numerous interviews with soldiers/veterans to earn his accuracy and he did a very good job. The dialogue especially mirrors the blunt-spoken nature of men at war. I really enjoyed the choppy give-and-take between the characters, and he did his homework to figure out how these guys talk and behave. The book pays respect with clear homages to a variety of works - "Apocalypse Now" especially, but also the underrated Desert Storm movie "Three Kings," and I felt echoes of a few scenes from "Dispatches."It is also an old-school western, and Gwyn takes a lot of loving care to establish the characters' relationships with the horses that are a big part of the plot (mostly in the first half, less in the second). There is a hint of romance, which I appreciated. It's got the emotional weight that the very overrated "Yellow Birds" sorely lacked. Will military readers need to suspend disbelief? Yes, you will. I'm a veteran, and have been to Iraq and a couple times I started to say, "wait, that would never...oh yeah, FICTION." So just relax and roll with it. It's unlikely that based on a Youtube video a guy's going to get tasked with an SF mission, but the commander's a little crazy, so it works. And there's other examples, but nothing completely, utterly unacceptable (a character gets a dishonorable discharge that seems unlikely). My big reason for 4 instead of 5 stars is the conclusion felt too rushed (for me) to earn the emotional punch that is supposed to occur. It's not a spoiler to say there will be tension between Captain Wynne and Russell, the Ranger. But the last 50 pages should have been 100 pages, with a couple more twists and more misdirection. As it is, the reader is supposed to come down on one person's side, but I came down on the other - and I'm pretty sure that's not what the author wanted. I knew what he wanted me to think, but he didn't give me enough evidence to think it. Basically, I felt a Col. Kurtz-ian vibe had been introduced, but not established firmly enough by the denouement (but don't think Gwyn's copying "Apocolypse" - it's an inspiration, that's it). It's very rare for me to say a book should be longer, but this is one of those times. I wanted that emotional punch to be much harder, and the distinction between good and bad to be murkier. So I was a little let down. However, it's still a four-star book, and close to five. I totally enjoyed it - and it ended too soon! That's never a bad thing! While it's being promoted in the vein of genre fiction, this is an excellent literary addition to the literature of the modern wars.

13 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Disappointing. By Nancy C Knowing that horses were used by our military in Afghanistan (in at least one instance), I thought this would be an interesting read. I have horses of my own, and was intrigued by the blurb, which talked about training the horses and teaching the Special Forces operators how to ride—and promised to be a cross between a Western and a war novel. That’s what it said on the cover, anyway. What I noticed right from the start was the book was far too easy to put down, and at one point I almost abandoned it completely. The characters are not particularly engaging, and other than the odd flash of poetic description, the writing is flat. There is a distant feel to the whole thing—I never felt like I was there, or experiencing the action, it was just the author telling me what was going on.And then there were the horses. Now, I checked online, and the author apparently grew up on a cattle ranch out west—but you’d never know that from the writing. The horses were supposedly brought from the US, but they are mostly unbroken. On top of that, two of them are stallions, and at least one of them is a young mare. Considering that more or less everybody involved in the mission knows nothing about horses/horsemanship/horse-handling, this is a sure recipe for disaster. One of those stallions is supposedly an Akhal Teke—a relatively rare breed, and not the kind thing you pick up for a couple hundred dollars at an auction. It is never explained who did the buying or the choosing of the horses—why would anyone buy unbroken horses for a mission like this? There are plenty of well-broke geldings out there available cheap, so why buy a barely halter-broke mare who isn’t even two years old? The horse details are ultimately where the story fell apart for me—the author doesn’t seem to be able to translate his own experience with horses into something readable or understandable. If you know absolutely nothing about horses, maybe this will work, but if you pick this up because of the horses, prepare to be disappointed.

Fear Tomorrow, by Peter LeGault

About the Author As a journalist, photographer, interpreter, author and avid sailor, Peter had traveled most of the world. He has seen mankind at his best and at his worst. In his third novel, he keeps questioning our inability and inadequacy to make our world a better place to live for all. Peter A. LeGault cross-examines the TRUE leaders of this world. To illogical, religious theological doctrines and to unfair political ideologies, his answer is why? From Peter's point of view, the leaders of our world live on a power trip at the expense of the rest of us. We are governed by fear and shame, using religions and false morality to show us the way...THEIR WAY. Through this novel, the author continues to take the readers through multiple perilous and sensual adventures. Peter mixes reality with fiction in order to challenge well established rules, regulations and controlling laws made by the rapacious leaders of our world. If emancipated sexuality and psychotic sexual orientation offend you; read this book...You will surely be outraged.

The author did thorough investigation about the locations where the events occurred. He has great insight to our present way and manipulated life. I would love to see this story on a big screen.

The twins soon discover they, too, have special gifts, when Keeler connects with them telepathically. But his cryptic message is frightening: “I’m being held prisoner. No one is safe! Beware of Dr. Chill!” The tragic loss of their mother to cancer and the abrupt disappearance of their father instill within the girls a deep sense of loss and betrayal and they make it their quest to get Keeler back. Ruby digs up an unusual crystal she witnessed her mom burying in the backyard, days before she died. Sade is horrified and fears its use was the cause of their mom’s cancer. Ruby believes it has the power to get them inside the school. Befriended by two evolved hybrid wolves, rejects from the school, they begin to devise a plan to help their brother and his classmates escape. They realize the only way in is through the mysterious labyrinth of caves beneath the academy. Unfortunately, things no longer human roam the dark catacombs and underground passages, and the adventurers will only prevail by uniting together against the evil within. Keeler Moon, is my first YA novel It can be best interpreted on two distinct levels, as a taut fantasy thriller or a sci-fi paranormal adventure.

Only it’s not just a matter of Keeler’s life at stake but that of their world and all other humans. Someone is out to turn normal, albeit gifted, children into what they believe is a different type of human being to begin a whole new world.Grey and Luna have their own harrowing adventures, which are not only tied but instrumental to the safety of Ruby, Sade, Keeler and the other children. Grey and Luna realize that they must come to the aid of Ruby and Sade, and along the way, find they have their own issues to resolve. This is a wonderful tale that is brought to life by Dhillon’s talent as not only an author but an artist as well. She brings Crystal City to life, as well as the confines of the school for ‘gifted’ children by painting colorful imagery with just mere words.Dhillon has amazing talent and I recommend this book for any young adult who wishes to travel to another time and dimension. Very entertaining and I can’t wait for the second installment!Reviewed by Starr Gardinier, author of the Other Side series.

"You complete me" may be a romantic line in a popular movie, but it's not a healthy basis for a real relationship. Unfortunately, many people are drawn into relationships that are unfulfilling precisely because they are looking to other people to fill in the places where they are lacking--they are looking for a person who will "complete" them. At the heart of relationship dependency is a person's belief that he or she alone is not enough. But using others to provide wholeness simply does not work, because while we are made to be relationship dependent, it is God we must turn to in order to find wholeness. In a warm, engaging style, Drs. Jantz and Clinton walk readers through patterns of relationship dependency, helping them unravel why they are drawn back to the same dry well of unfulfilled relationships over and over again. Readers will discover how to break the cycle, banish their fears, and find wholeness in the God who designed them to be in relationship first and foremost with him, thus freeing them to find healthy relationships with others. Includes a twelve-week personal recovery plan.

Gently helps the reader to recognize & change unhealthy relationship patterns By Debbie "Don't Call It Love" is a book that describes relationship dependency and how to break that cycle. I've had difficultly understanding why a teenager I mentor seems to seek out chaotic, emotional roller coaster relationships. This book did help me understand where she's coming from, but it's intended to be read by someone who needs help rather than someone who wants to help. The overall tone of the book was encouraging and hopeful. The majority of the book was a series of questions, lists, and descriptions relating to relationship dependency. The authors described various traits of relationship dependency, the 8-phase addicted-to-relationships cycle, and the fears that drive this behavior. They explored how emotional and spiritual abuse contributes to relationship dependency. (Spiritual abuse is when someone deliberately uses God's approval--and this someone "speaks" for God--to control another person.) They also explained how brain chemistry can reinforce bad patterns of behavior, how this can be retrained, and various attachment styles. Finally, they talked about the truths you need to know to replace the lies that feed relationship dependency. The authors are Christians, so these truths are based on Biblical truths. This included more questions and lists, but these showed how knowing the truth changes the answers that you might have previously given. They also included a 12 week recovery plan that gives a prayer, Bible verse, the truth learned from that verse, and actions to take that week. The book gently helps the reader to recognize and admit unhealthy relationship patterns in their lives and encourages them to want something better. I think it'd help someone frustrated with their relationships.I received an ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.

They are crucial for the proper functioning in society. They form the glue for many. Without them, we are like robots. Relationships are also important. The trouble comes when we misunderstand the proper place of relationships and to over-emphasize its importance. One such problem is codependency. In the words of two medical doctors, it is simply "relationship dependency" that comes about when a person simply cannot function in life without them. Such a person "has difficulty loving or trusting self and needs relationships to provide validation and value."Right from the start, the five diagnostic questions had me probing things about myself. When talking about ourselves, how difficult can it be to come up with ten words? How many of these words are positive and how many are negative? According to the authors' research, they find that lots of people have way too negative views about themselves. They show us at least twenty "dependent personality traits," such as needing constant reassurance; validation from others; unable to disagree or assert ourselves; jumping to another relationship when one ends; and so on. They guide readers toward a deeper level of understanding of such traits through the recognition of patterns of dependency. Using an "addictive cycle" model, eight phases are identified.Search: A frantic lookout for someone to grab on to.Attraction: Believing one can only be secure by clinging on someone, one is drawn to another so as to fill one's emptiness.Relief: Immediate relief comes when a person is foundAnxiety: Fears start to appear the moment the person does not seem to meet one's expectationsDenial: Adopting all kinds of behaviour just to prove one is not insecure despite the evidenceEscalation: Panic steps in when one sees the relationship waning, resulting in escalation of steps to protect and to cement the relationshipSwitching: A move from a I-want-You to a You-Owe-Me.Withdrawal: An emotional downward spiral when a relationship is lost.Jantz is the founder of the Center for Counseling and Health Resources based in Washington while Clinton is President of the American Association of Christian Counselors. Together they help to clear the decks of addiction and to discover the unhealthy dependency traits. Just like alchoholic addiction, the road to recovery begins with a recognition that such dependency is likened to being addicted to poison, not promise. In the words of Jantz and Clinton, we cannot call it "love." We must take the fears of unhealthy dependency by the horns and face them head on with courage. Boldly face the fears of exposure, emptiness, abandonment, insignificance, rejection, and so on. They point out the link between one's emotional abuse and relationship dependency. They look at how spiritual abuse can also contribute toward such unhealthy dependencies Both physical and spiritual abuse include patterns of manipulation. They also look at the scientific reasons on brain chemistry. After all these essential groundwork, they provide us three steps forward in breaking the relationship dependency cycle. The first step is to learn about attachment styles to help us move from unhealthy to healthy relationships. The fundamental attachment style is that of a parent-child relationship. The "secure attachment style" is about feeling safe, feeling loved, and being able to trust others. They are secure in who they are. The "ambivalent attachment style" experience inconsistent love at childhood. They are distrusting of others and often seek verification. Constantly on a lookout for love and affection, they may even manipulate others in order to get the love that they want. The "avoidant attachment style" on the other hand wants intimacy but cannot find someone suitable to cling on to. They then adopt the avoidance and the abandonment method. Not only are they unable to find someone to connect with, they grow in being unwilling to do anything about it, and to go solo. The "disorganized attachment style" has no consistent pattern except that they are none of the earlier three styles. They are the catch-all type when they do not fit any of the above. In order to know ourselves better, it is good to see where we fit into these. The second step is to recognize that the core of healthy relationship dependency is to cultivate the inner man. Loved people love people. We need God. We may fool others but God is not fooled. When we are disillusioned with God, we invariably become disillusioned with people and the things of this world. When the root relationship is mended and reconciled, it sparks the road to recovery. Just being a Christian does not exempt one from unhealthy dependencies on one another. For such relationships is essentially idolatry. We idolize others as the solution to our needs. We idolize ourselves into thinking that the world owe us. In the love of God, we grow out of this spiritual security toward a healthy attachment that loves others and oneself. The third step is to put everything into practice. With the step of faith, we learn to be honest with ourselves. We begin with our broken selves and to take a snapshot of who we are. We then acknowledge that we cannot help ourselves and to let God rescue us. The "Twelve Weeks to Wellness" plan helps us do just that. I like that list.- A weekly prayer list- A weekly Scripture passage to illustrate the love and grace of God- A weekly statement to affirm our dependency on God- A weekly action plan and a "radar of faith"- A weekly gratitude listThis book is a reminder that we are not as strong as we may think. Neither are we as weak as we may presume. All of us carry wounds and a past with various states of brokenness. Even our relationships are not perfect. Some of our friends and loved ones no longer want to connect with us. Others cling on to us like glue. With the diagnostic questions in this book, not only can we discover more about ourselves now, we can use it as an opportunity to do periodic flashbacks on our past. Just because we do not feel a certain way now does not mean we will never do so in the future. We are all vulnerable. For people who are desperate for someone to cling onto right now, this book is the life buoy to keep us afloat enough so that we do not drown the one we desire to cling on to. For people who encounter those with manipulative tendencies, it may give them strategies to guard themselves from becoming victims. At the same time, it enables them to understand why certain people behave that way. I would caution anyone from being too quick to jump to conclusion about other people's attachment styles. If needed, seek a professional counselor. Relationships can be very complicated and no Do-It-Yourself book or manual can solve it. Those who feel like they can be a blessing and a healing agent to those in emotional need will do best to ensure they stand on firm foundations in the first place. My prayer is that believers in Christ will find their safety and security in Christ alone. From that position, extend a hand of friendship, with the backing of the Word of God, and the practical strategies available in this book. Who knows, when we recognize the signs of dependency in others, we can become a bridge for God to heal relationships, if necessary, through us.Rating: 4.5 stars of 5.conradeThis book is provided to me courtesy of Revell Publishers and Graf-Martin Communications in exchange for an honest review. Filling in the blanks By Mark Let me start out by saying that this book resulted in rereading others because I needed to go back and see where events fit in. There are times that bouncing back and forth in time cornfuses me. That being said, I did enjoy this book because I've become somewhat invested in the plot and characters and need to know what's happening in their fictional lives. Anyone who enjoyed Heinlein's world as a myth concept would understand this seemingly illogical way of looking at stories.

They either make her a faux action girl (appears to be a strong character but ends up needing to be rescued like any other damsel in distress) or they think strong female equals cast iron bitch, and the result is a singularly unpleasant character. This author gets it right. Ashterra is nowhere near a damsel in distress, and while she has a lot of anger, being raised by the toe of the Dark Lord's boot is liable to make anyone cranky. Towards the end I thought her anger was getting a bit stale and she should lighten up a bit, and there are hints that she is, and I expect she will develop more in subsequent stories. I enjoyed seeing the challenges she had to face and overcome, and how she progressed as a result. The challenge she faced with the dark descent was probably my favorite. I got a kick out of how none of the fiends knew what to do with a human entering puberty. I loved the scene when the blood witches arrive to school Ashterra and the fiends on it. The scene of the witch teasing the Dark Lord was priceless! I found her character to be good fun, even though as a blood witch she was completely untrustworthy. It was a nice bit of humor in the midst of a dark setting. The main flaws are grammatical, and because I'm a grammar Nazi I can't ignore them. There were two mistakes in the opening sentence alone. Such a glaring and easily fixed mistake can turn a reader off and make it look like the writer doesn't know what he's doing. There were several redundancies throughout the book - things like "encircled by a large fire on all sides." There were typos like "Th" when it was obvious "The" was the intention or "furry" when "fury" was intended. There was the occasional word usage error - mail is used as a synonym for armor but it's a specific type of armor, bidding someone "ado" when it should be "adieu." A further issue with that was why was a French word used in a world where the French language doesn't exist? Things like that jerk a reader out of the story they've been immersed in up to that point. It may seem nit-picky, but a writer not polishing out these details is like a furniture maker not sanding off the splinters on his work and leaving the finished splotched and uneven; it's shoddy craftsmanship and makes a writer look amateurish, like an applicant showing up for a job interview in shorts and flip flops. The wording of some sentences could get a little awkward. For example, a word like "commandingly" just doesn't fit smoothly into a sentence. It interferes with a nice flow.Character, plot, pacing, etc. are fine and the author has a good grasp of them. I'd like to see where Ashterra goes from here, how her character further develops. Just sand off those bothersome grammar and word usage splinters.

I have been held captive with the fast paced story and life of the main character Ashterra. Such a powerful and strong character, her deviousness is intoxicating. Read and enjoy this book.
