A dystopian novel that focuses on a family trying to find a better future By atomskeater The poor live outside the city walls, starving and scrounging for whatever work and food they can find. The poor are so reduced in stature withing society that they are given numbers instead of last names. Meanwhile, the wealthy live inside the walls, with the Titans among the most powerful of them. Nothing about the system is fair, and the Titans would keep it that way to maintain their place. Civil unrest begins to spread among the people of the reservation, generations of ill treatment bubbling to the surface. The backdrop is one of consumerism and capitalism taken to extremes, where corporations and bottom lines are given precedence over the suffering of others. In many respects it reflects our current society, such as in one scene where a wealthy Titan would rather have excess food destroyed rather than give it to the servants staffing his lavish party. As a dystopian novel, it focuses less on fantastical future wastelands filled with monsters and more on economics, laws and rules of society, etc. I found the setting very interesting and original, and sympathized with the constant injustices the main character faced. The prose is not complex, with short chapters that make for east bite-sized reading sessions. I felt like the tale was too short, and would welcome further adventures using this setting. The primary characters are James and Helena, a couple who find themselves in the middle of things. They just want a place where their children can have better lives than they did. I wanted to get to know them even better, but it felt like things were over in a flash! I enjoyed this novel, despite any flaws, and would recommend it.

As a fan of William Grahams The Red Planet novellas I felt that I should grab another one of his science fiction tales. Instead of red though (as Im fully caught up there) I went green and grabbed Greenfields. This isn't your standard dystopian future though is just as compelling as many of the ones out there which focus on social injustices. In the book we follow James, Helena, and their family as they try to live in a world where unless you are one of the wealthy Titans, you're life isn't worth much. It is a scary example of how our current form of capitalism could ruin life and society for the masses if left unchecked. In a world where the government has pretty much been replaced by corporations the laws and rules are meant to keep them in power and profitable while the rest of society is little more than slave labor.Once again Grahams world building is top notch in taking a futuristic society that could not only be a twisted version of our own but use it to throw in some social commentary. While the secondary characters weren't quite as three dimensional as they were in the Red Planet series they all did help move the story forward as the family tried to start fresh in the Greenfields District where the Titans do not have control over the populace. My only real complaint would be that the prologue was a bit of an information dump that could have easily fallen somewhere in the novella itself. Thankfully it was a short one and just helped setup what to expect going forward.

I have read The Red Planet novellas, and have been absolutely fascinated by them. When I saw that he wrote a different kind of novel, entiled Greenfields: A Novella, I knew I just had to have it. As I expected, Its a wonderful novel that kept me captivated from start to finish. This is another science fiction, which is something that I thoroughly enjoy.I love the characters in this one. We have James and Helena, whom we follow throughout the story. The two of them and their family struggle to live in a world that isnt exactly just; unless you are a wealthy Titan, youre life isnt worth too much. This relates so much to our modern day society, unfortunately. Thats why I found the premise so interesting, because Its almost reality like.I loved the imaginery in this novel, the character descriptions provided, and the way that the story just jumps out at you. I felt like I was in the novel as a part of James and Helenas family throughout the whole story. Highly recommend.
