An exciting read with lots of suspense By Kitty Smith Like most of us who attended college, Vikram's first steps into university life don't go smoothly. Between humiliation and hazing at the hands of upperclassmen and accidentally insulting one of his professors to the man's daughter, he doesn't get off to the best start. But Vikram is a strong character, willing to stand up for himself and what is right, and he soon earns the respect of those around him. Together with friends Ajay and Sameer, the three make their way through the challenges of university, pretty girls, and life. There's plenty of humor woven into the story. The scene where the boys call random girls with wild stories in hopes of getting a date is hilarious, proof that college boys world wide will do anything to meet a pretty girl. The story moves at a fast pace and is full of suspense. There's romance with the beautiful Ashima, despite his initial deception. There's also danger and suspense, thanks to Vikram being in the wrong place at the wrong time. When a demand for tea and smokes turns into murder, he witnesses something that will never leave him, and he cannot run away from. Blackmail, extortion, and murder begins to overshadow his life as he learns the killer is someone he knows, and he can trust no one. This is also a beautiful immersion into India, her culture and beauty, and her people. Few westerners are ever graced with such an intimate look into this world outside of the occasional Hollywood lens, and Arora did a lovely job bringing it to life. But as so often happens with books written by non-native speakers, the English translation takes a hit and this book could really use a native English speaking editor. And yet, the hiccups in grammar allow the story to unfold in my mind exactly as they should, mixed up tenses and not-quite-right words simply part of the patois, and for that I view them with a forgiving eye. After all, it's the story I came for, not the punctuation, and the story is exciting and compelling.

Good things do certainly come in threes and this neatly interwoven theme brings an clever balance to this multifaceted adventure. I couldn’t have picked a book more outside my norm and was immediately captivated by the compelling perspective. First, as a female reader, I’m always fascinated by the inter-workings of male friendships. I envy the rapport between Vikram, Ajay, and Sameer; their bantering reads authentically unpolished and colorful and made me wish I had these gentleman at my back during my own freshman year of college. Is there a word for missing friends you only read about? I really loved this novel for the same reason so many adored The Kite Runner — a foreign (to me at least!) Indian setting, a refreshing male point-of-view, and touching friendships. I was happily immersed and found myself enjoyably looking up many of the cultural reference. However, don’t be fooled into thinking this is some sort of romantic drama without a cutting bite. Chance circumstance befalls Vikram and rips him from the normal, awkward navigation of college and into a twisting and turning suspense. I love the wrong-place-at-the-wrong-time setup - it is just bad luck that befalls Vikram and could happen to anyone. This book does not pull any punches — there is bloodshed, blackmail, illegal drugs, and extortion, to just brush the surface. Most importantly, there is an obscure and unsolved murder which begs the apprehensive question, “Who can you trust?” You are literally on the edge of your seat until the last, quickly-turned, page. Highly recommend!

Recommended for those who love to read unusual By Sandeep Sharma Our college life is the most fascinating time that stays in our memory for the lifetime. Our friends, the feeling of friendship, love, fights everything turns out to be the beautiful journey of roller coaster of emotional drama. The same is with this book which starts with Vikram’s first step in the college where he finds two of his best buddies, Ajay and Sameer. The story is pretty well woven with the surprise elements and rib tickling humor. The chase for the first date was awesome. It made me literally laugh and roll over the bed. But the main story begins with the murder that unfortunately happens in front of Vikram. There begins the dark side of the story and thats the moment where it instantly grips the hold over the reader which stays till the end of the story.Twist and turns are plotted over the story line pretty beautifully and makes this suspense thriller much more beautiful. We were three is truly a great story told by the author. Now coming on the drawbacks. Editing of the book is not done properly, there are various points were you can see errors regarding the language. Another thing which I felt as the problematic area for the author was his writing style. Sometimes the dialogues seem to be very loosely written. But if we ignore these few drawbacks, the story of the book makes me recommend the book to everyone who loves to read a bit unusual.
