About the Author Often called the father of science fiction, British author Herbert George (H. G.) Wells literary works are notable for being some of the first titles of the science fiction genre, and include such famed titles as The Time Machine, The War of the Worlds, The Island of Doctor Moreau, and The Invisible Man. Despite being fixedly associated with science fiction, Wells wrote extensively in other genres and on many subjects, including history, society and politics, and was heavily influenced by Darwinism. His first book, Anticipations of the Reaction of Mechanical and Scientific Progress Upon Human Life and Thought, offered predictions about what technology and society would look like in the year 2000, many of which have proven accurate. Wells went on to pen over fifty novels, numerous non-fiction books, and dozens of short stories. His legacy has had an overwhelming influence on science fiction, popular culture, and even on technological and scientific innovation. Wells died in 1946 at the age of 79.

I can't recommend this edition enough ! You will thoroughly enjoy this great work ! From cover to cover you will be up reading till its finished finally putting it back on the shelf is like leaving an old friend. All of his works have been amazing from his predictions to the future, science fiction and even the psychological thrillers i have loved them all.H.G. Wells is a must for anyone's reading list so much of his work is so important through the ages you must read his works.

By Blaine Coleman In “Hero Complex” Scott Jones gives us a well-written thriller, a tale of an ex-Army Ranger named Tom who lives life on his own terms but feels compelled to help those he knows who find themselves in trouble and can’t help themselves. Tom is approached by a former girlfriend, the the love of his life who now is happily married and has two young daughters, and asked to help Vickie’s younger sister, Jenny, and her son, escape her abusive and dangerous husband. As a favor to Vickie, Tom agrees to do what he can to help and that’s when the real action begins. The writing is clean and concise, almost terse which perfectly suits the story. There isn’t a single unneeded word in this book. Tom is a strong, believable character and other characters in this book are believable as well. I’d like to see this story become a series following the enigmatic Tom coming to the rescue of other oppressed people who can’t help themselves or depend on law enforcement for assistance! Although this isn’t the usual genre I read, it is definitely a five-star book!

Felt like a jerk for it since the artwork is really truly amazing. As it is, the digital versions do have formatting problems still. I'll update this review if it ever gets fixed. (Please let it get fixed, because I do want to read it!)Original review:The artwork is stunning... However there are severe formatting issues. A very enjoyable read By Midlander The Defiant Prince takes place in AD25, towards the end of the Iron Age, a time very different to this 21st century . The characters in the novel are immediately engaging, especially Caradoc, who combines the innocence of youth with wisdom and strength. The last chapter left me wanting to know more, I am now eagerly awaiting the second part of the trilogy, The Druid Heir.

Across the plains where creaking wagons cut their trails into the earth emerges Paka and her mysterious pride with their roots in Ancient Egypt. A 5 star +.After reading the first 2 Copperhead and Copperhead Strikes I wasnt sure if i could be and more astounded. But yes it happened.Lacy puts up with no mans (or womans) crap. Her husband Rawley is no different.put them together chasing some very bad men...well you have bout the worse type of Hurricane, tornado, tusami all rolled into one. Put their children Cotton Top and Hannah in the mix and the world will come to an end.Hannah just like her momma is loud and takes no crap. Cotton Top like his daddy is level headed and thinks first. Together they make a great team, like their parents. Being kidnapped only makes Hannah and Cotton Top closer. Teaming up with the other kids they work to find their way home while Lacy and Rawley are on the hunt for the kidnappers and their children.

He was a well-dressed action figure (or what my Dad called “a doll”). The thing I remember most about Captain Action was that he came with a Batman and a Spider-Man costume. At least that's what Santa brought. In reality, there were a bunch of other superheroes Cap could play dress up with, including The Phantom, The Lone Ranger, Superman, Flash Gordon and The Green Hornet. Captain Action was, to six-year-old me, the man without an identity. That Christmas gift also included Action Boy and the evil, well, Dr. Evil. I felt kind of guilty that Doctor Evil was my favorite of the three. Cap and AB were just so bland. Dr. Evil was cool. And you could see his brain!There was also a Captain Action comic book published by DC with amazing art by Gil Kane. It lasted only a few issues, and, along with the action figure, soon faded to memory.Recently, the character was revived in pulp novels by Airship 27. I haven’t read those.I have read the new spinoff novella LADY ACTION-THE SANDS OF FOREVER by Ron Fortier. And it’s a corker.Set in the present day, the titular character is an operative of A.C.T.I.O.N., a generic intelligence agency. Fortier does a fine job in laying out the background and setting in few words, leaving plenty of room for the man event: action, without the periods.Here’s all you need to know: there are bad guys seeking a supernatural power in the desert. Lady Action has to stop them.The rest is full-tilt shooting, punching, blowing things up and more shooting and punching (and nightmare-inducing giant double-tailed scorpions). LADY ACTION-THE SANDS OF FOREVER reminded me of the best of those beloved 80s men's adventure novels, with a larger-than-life threat, exotic climes, and death-defying heroics. Fortier never lets the story slow down and he does a fine job of added enough local to set the scene in his foreign locales without falling into the common trap of bogging down the story just to show off the research.The only flaws I found were a few typos. Beyond that, LADY ACTION-THE SANDS OF FOREVER provides an hour of so of fun-filled escapism.That’s what pulp is all about.

A novelistic mashup of Lara Croft, Indiana Jones and James Bond with it’s own unique characters and flavor By Bob Deis Ron Fortier has a long and distinguished career as a writer for comics. I’ve been a fan of his work in that realm for years, especially his contributions to the Green Hornet and Terminator series published by NOW Comics. In 2006, Fortier created his own publishing company called Airship 27. At that point, he became a pioneer in publishing “new pulp” novels and story anthologies that are inspired by both classic comics and old pulp magazines. THE SANDS OF FOREVER is a short novel that has genes from both realms. It features the character Nicola Sinclair, a beautiful, butt-kicking international spy code-named “Lady Action.” Although she comes from the popular Captain Action comics series, you don’t really to know anything about that series to understand and enjoy THE SANDS OF FOREVER. It’s a self-contained action/adventure romp that takes Nicola to Libya to find another agent who has gone missing. He was searching for the mysterious “Tree of Life” mentioned in the Bible, which is said to have tremendous powers and be hidden somewhere in the Libyan desert. The search-and-rescue mission soon turns into a fight for survival. A local, colorfully-evil Arab sheik has also heard of the magical tree and wants it for himself. This leads to a series of bloody fights between Nicola and the sheik’s henchman, a wild car chase through the streets of Tripoli, a race across the desert and a final confrontation in an ancient underground maze of tunnels full of deadly giant scorpions. It’s a fun read with a quick-paced, cinematic style: kind of a novelistic mashup of the Lara Croft, Indiana Jones and James Bond films with it’s own unique characters and flavor. I enjoyed it and look forward to reading future Lady Action novels by Fortier.

(In fact, I'm a tad perplexed by the criticism of there being poor typesetting, since the copy I received is perfect!) Above all, Fortier's writing style flows with Ian Fleming-like finesse, but with a more modern sensibility.Lady Action, Nicola Sinclair, is really the tale's driving force, and she's not only a female counterpart to our pal, Captain Action, but a strong beauty to rival the likes of Lara Croft, Emma Peel and Peggy Carter. (Truly, I think I'm in love with her, thanks to Fortier's detailed descriptions and complexity of character.)The story is also extremely exotic, with a missing A.C.T.I.O.N. agent and the mythical Tree of Life at its heart, as well as an ample offering of colorful characters you're destined to enjoy and remember.Top-notch all the way through, with loads of spirited fun. Nothing short of a modern, pulp masterpiece. Don't hesitate to grab this one. You will not regret it!

By wayne d. dundee The FIGHT CARD series keeps slugging on and keeps pounding out exciting new tales with an ever increasing stable of writers covering expanded time frames and settings.The latest of these is FIGHTING ALASKA with Duane Spurlock behind the Jack Tunney byline and it is a terrific entry indeed.Spurlock has a very evocative writing style, capturing all the boisterous color and energy of his turn-of-the-century settings --- ranging from the Texas panhandle, to San Francisco, to Nome, Alaska. He freely mixes fictional (or fictionalized) characters with historical ones (such as Wyatt Earp, Rex Beach, and Tex Rickard). He does the same with fictional and historical events, even bending time here and there where it suits him. And he makes it all work beautifully.Jean St. Vrain, a veteran, ready-to-call-it-quits boxer, follows the dream of his best pal (also a former boxer and mentor) to the gold fields of Alaska only to be met by corruption and double-dealing that leaves both men without their promised claim and facing desperate straits in an environment that is foreign and hostile to them in many different ways. Their only chance to survive and to secure a stake for getting back “outside” (home again) is for Jean to fight one last fight.The action is fast and furious, with wonderfully descriptive fight scenes. The insight into the central character of Jean is especially well done, and all the rest of the characters (both fictional and historic) are well-rounded and nicely presented as well.Very strong entry in the series.Highly recommended.

Awesome series By LoveToRead I already have two of these novels about the paranormal jaguar shape-shifter, and jumped at the chance to get the box set of ‘Rescued By An Alpha’ for this excellent price. This series of books has it all: adventure, suspense, romance, loss, werewolves, and pirates. It kept me on the edge of my seat several times. I loved the well-written characters, especially Tom, Serena, and Philippe. I highly recommend this exciting set of books but I have to say, it’s for the over 18 crowd. Quite steamy in parts. I give author Celine Yorke five stars all the way.

A science fiction thriller and love story combined. Author Jean Kilczer has the most astounding and vivid imagination around. I can't wait to see her ratings bounce her to the top of the charts/market! Kilczer is a reader of Shakespeare, and the quality of her writing shows it--without diminishing by one whit her ability to describe alien species (in this case, giant octopi), while writing with suspense, action, poetry, tragedy, and comedy. Though not part of her celebrated Star Sojourner Series (this is from her earlier work), the characters in Kraken's Keep exhibit their usual mischief and incomparable foibles. You've got to read this amazing book yourself to see what I mean! [This book contains some explicit sexual material, so recommended for adult readers only.]--Erica Miles, author of Dazzled by Darkness

The Star Sojourner series is awesome.This story was intense. It’s obvious the author knows about diving. The underwater scenes were scary for me. I felt like I was right there.Kraken’s Keep is a very interesting and informative sci fi story. Well done with a depth to each character that speaks of seasoned character development. Many unforgettable moments in this book will stay with me for a long time.I give it a full five stars and recommend it to readers of sci fi, especially underwater/ocean adventure!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. 100 foot long Octopi? Oh my goodness. By Berk Rourke I have read many of Jean Kilczer's books and enjoyed them all. This book has some interesting moments of the reality of Jean's character. She reveres her two dogs and I was not surprised that Tessica's dog was of the same breed. Jean also is an animal rights person. She is particularly vocal about how wolves are treated in this country. Knowing that made it easier for me to understand and feel the intensity of her characters being antagonistic to the killing of the "giants."This book is set in 2041 and postulates a new type of octopus has evolved, perhaps from nuclear explosions in Bikini or perhaps from pollutants poured into the sea by the Japanese and others. At first there is fear because the new Octopi are quite large and have an acid in their bodies that is dangerous to man. As the crew of first the Reverence and then the Cousteau begin to learn about these giant octopi and deal with them many new ideas arise and much respect is learned both by the creatures and the crew of the Cousteau. In the process the crew encounter pirates and a preacher who wants to kill off scientists, as well as illegal fishermen of the Octopi that are killing them and selling their meat.This is an exciting story that keeps you moving right along with all that is happening from time to time. The characters are not complex though they are developed. The story line keeps working right to the end. This was a fun read that I finished quite quickly. I would recommend this book to anyone over the age of 18 and only put that restriction on as a result of a moment of somewhat graphic sex that fits right into the flow of the story and is necessary. Five stars is easy for this one.

Molander This valuable book teaches us that adhering to social and cultural demands in a church can take us away from our walk with God and knowing "the satisfaction of doing the right things for the right reasons; of living the joyous gospel of Jesus Christ from the heart". You will be reminded that "the reward's of doing the Lord's will are far greater than the rewards of social approval". A perfect guide for the dedicated church member, LDS or otherwise, who finds they are motivated by a compulsive sense of guilt to always perform each and every service opportunity in their church. The authors discuss trying to live "the gospel of the social" out of fear of being judged by others who equate volunteering and participating in all church activities as a requirement and prerequisite to being a true Christian. A quote from the first chapter: "It takes integrity and humility to be what we are, not caught up in appearances. It takes courage to do what the Lord wants us to do, or not do, when it doesn't fit the social perception of a faithful or active Latter-day Saint". The Preface contains statements sustaining the leaders of the LDS church and that the book is written to ensure the ideas presented are in harmony with the teachings of scripture and the leaders of the Church.

I love the snippets from conference talks I'd never heard of. I was able to look up the references and have further reading to enrich my study. I love that they empathize with the stress of trying to keep all the commandments and offer doctrinal support for their ideas and a solution as to how to go forward and avoid burnout. A must-read for any latter-dat Saint who feels like they're drowning in church to-dos.

It was published as part of the famous Winston Sci-Fi Series and was the best book of the series. I've read most of Mr. Bova's works over the years, and while this was his first, it is still about the best thing he ever wrote. In later years, he tended to develop the tendency to pad his writing.Star Conquerors, on the other hand, was a great action adventure than spanned the galaxy. When the Terran Empire is invaded by "the Masters", it appears that all is lost. But one man leads a fleet of ships against incredible odds and by genius, luck, new inventions, and indomitable character, overcomes the hordes of invaders and eventually reaches the center of the Galaxy to confront the Masters. There are enough twists and turns to keep you enthralled and the surprise ending is first class.In recent years many of Bova's fans have pleaded for a reprint of the book (printed in 1959 - believed to be less than 10000 copies in existence), but even though he promised to deliver, he has been delaying now for over 5 years since the original promise. Supposedly he had a copy OCRed and it merely needed to be proofed before release (but keep in mind this happened several years ago).Needless to say, many of Mr. Bova's fans are less than thrilled at being treated like second-class citizens.If you are one of the lucky few that read the book during the 60's (published in 1959), then you recall it fondly and would dearly like to read it again.Here's hoping that Mr. Bova will do the right thing in regard to his many fans!LATEST UPDATE: Mr. Bova as released a free pdf copy of Star Conqueors. It is on his website which is is full name with no space between first and last name and then a period and then the com extension. Then scroll to the bottom of the page where it says "Interested in Ben's first book". To the right is a Click Here link to download the pdf.Later Update: For some unknown reason Mr. Bova has now removed the download of the Star Conquerors PDF. Once again his many fans are being disappointed. I still believe this was the best thing he ever wrote. Unlike his more modern novels, this one was fast paced and did not suffer from the padding that seems all too common in current novels.

Read it many, many times By MildCritter I read this book over and over when it was new, and was lucky enough to buy the library bound copy from the library where I had checked it out. You can find amazing old science fiction gems at library sales.This book is essentially a juvenile on the same level as the Nourse and Heinlein juveniles. It's a good story with good characters and all the underpinnings of the style of the day. Its messages still have meaning today.If you haven't read it, it's worth a read because of its historicity and because it's a cracking good story. It has many of the typical faults of a first novel, but so what? It's still a lot of fun.

It is exciting to return to it 50 years later and recognize how it influenced me. I went into a life of science and administration with a thought that it was noble to do both. I reread the book tonight and felt that same enthusiasm fir challenging the unknown and uncertain that I did as a 12 year old. Many thanks for getting this released again.

HEARTFULNESS elaborates on that work by delving deeper into the practical aspects of contemplation. These are presented in perfectly segmented steps that are accessible with minimal conceptual baggage. People from many traditions can benefit from this straightforward approach, which combines an incarnational use of the physical body with guidance that avoids New Age egoism. Bravo!

What a gift to the world! I am reading/contemplating it every day. It is so well done- every page an artwork unfolding:) This is yet another master piece from Robert Sardello. Today -while praying/practicing -I sensed the radiating quality of heartfulness as enlivening, embodied World presences. Radiating as some thing like being full of life, full of existence. Thank you for writing this lovely book.

Good Stories Rise and Fall By Paul Rerucha "Good stories rise and fall like empires in the endless pursuit of happiness, like armies of lovers marching to paradise - good stories change the world." So begins Part One of Orphans, Assassins and the Existential Eggplant. This book is such a good read. I read it on the plane to Hawaii, and it soared with me through the sky. My wife kept asking what was so funny as I giggled and laughed in my seat. This story changed me, in that flying is such a drag these days, and this book kept coming up with surprises, weaving together stories of gods, goddesses, orphans and assassins, the pursuit of the unattainable, and existential conundrums.I have had the opportunity to read some of Mr Gillett's poetry (especially "This is My Last Poem" - I hope this is not his last novel), and in this novel, he brings his poetic ability to sublimely transport the reader to new views of the mundane, new opportunities for transformation, and new ways of understanding my own self. What more could I ask for in a book.Steal this book if you need to, but get it and read it with joy.

By Robert A McLellan Right from the first page, the author was able to grab my attention with careful description and believable characters. For me, the sign of a good writer is one who takes the time to describe the environment around the main characters with vivid detail. That's what I found throughout the book, right up to the last page. I not only enjoyed the characters and their individual journeys, but also learning about all of these events that happened throughout history that I was unaware of. I don't want to give the plot away, but the eggplant was my favorite character by far. I loved his carefreeness as well as his wisdom and frankness. I want such an eggplant hanging around my neck.

Orphans, Assassins and the Existential Eggplant from Chas By Ryan A dynamite first novel by an author who knows how to tell an exciting story, while drawing associations from the vast repository of the historical record. He uses fact, fable, hearsay and myth imaginatively to create a multi-layered tapestry that expands the action. A simple story, at first, but then the plot is moved by the mysterious, serendipitous Plans of the heavens, Fate, Destiny, the Great Questions; and then you fell it's part of some vast web of continuity, and the western esoteric story known as the Great Tradition. The action is cinematic, moves swiftly, and I was lifted along at flying carpet speed, or on a horse galloping on air. Full of pyrotechnics, and incendiary inventions, and challenging historical suppositions, this book can really blow your mind ! A cast of characters who continue to draw upon the best qualities of the human spirit; their warmth, faith and determination continue to bring out the light in human character, redeeming every dark situation, challenging the strengths of evil minded Powers. A first in the history of literature, I'll let the fabulous eggplant speak for itself. An eggplant will never appear the same again.This novel has a way of provoking thought. Our collective myths are stretched like an expanding sky. It connects the dots called historical events in new, interesting, compelling, humorous, and unexpected ways. In that sense, it is positively diabolical, radical & refreshing.David Alan Chasmar
