Four hundred years in the future, genetic engineering has created three species of humans. Homo sapiens – the Sapes – are the masters. The Sirians are savage and insular. The Helots are slaves, denied even the right to breed. Now, after generations of abuse and exploitation, the Helots seek to overthrow their masters by attacking Zeus, the supercomputer that oversees the Sapes’ society. For Maddy Hawthorn, a Sape colonist, the peaceful life she had planned at Barnard’s Star is torn apart when she becomes involved in the Helot’s terrorist plot to destroy the stranglehold of the Elite over the other races. Reluctantly, she joins up with insurgent Helot Igil Hoo and renegade Sirian Dorac Elsilunda. Together, they are forced to work for the revolution. Soon they are sent on a suicide mission to destroy Zeus. Trying to stop them is Agnes Lawson, a navy commander who finds herself sympathizing more and more with the rebels. On a remote planet called Lizard all four find themselves facing not only formidable military opposition but also fundamental questions about their own motives, as well as the nature of the society which has made them who they are.

A review by Free Book Reviews By Free Book Reviews Days of IronFirst and foremost let me say that the futuristic science fiction/mystery/thriller aspect of this novel had my vote from the very beginning because I am at heart a science fiction nut and I wasn't disappointed. I loved the blend of modern realism, with the social injustices with which we live on a daily basis but no one wants to talk about, and futuristic overtones because it's set in a time when one would think that those same social injustices and difficulties are things which we would've surpassed.I also love the way that the author weaves a tale of intrigue and suspense while interlacing real world facts in regards to the daily struggle of life with things like space travel and colonization, water rationing and air recycling and the like. This is not a novel in which all problems are solved with just the push of a button or the adaptation of current technology to suit the given situation, the characters are forced into a creative approach to problem solving and I like that. The characters are more relatable and tend to be three dimensional and they came alive for me instead of being just a name on a piece of paper as they were by turn apathetic, angry, happy and scared and thoroughly believable.I will admit that the ending was not at all what I expected, it wasn't all falling stars and fool's gold and not everything worked out perfectly and according to plan for all the characters involved which is yet another example of an aspect that snagged my interest. I'm not the type of person that enjoys an exclusively happy ending in all written works. I've always enjoyed a bit of a twist because it frankly keeps me guessing and keeps me wrapped up in a story. All in all, I loved Days of Iron and wish to heartily congratulate Russell Proctor on a job incredibly well done and an intensely enjoyable tale and I whole heartedly recommend it to anyone who loves to curl up on the couch with a good book and get lost in a story as this is the kind of novel that fits the bill.Free Book Reviews

Proctor creates a futuristic universe that is rich in detail By Darlene I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. The protagonist, Maddy Hawthorn, is a Sape (or Homo sapien) who has spent all her life living in space on-board a Slowboat called the Endeavour. She is kidnapped by Igil Hoo, a Helot - who is a part of the bottom-class species better known as the slave race. Because of the violence perpetrated against her by upper-class members of her own race known as the Elite, Igil presumes that she is a wise choice to aid him in a terrorist plot to bring down the Elite leaders. The two are joined by Dorac, who is a Sirian naval officer in search of his missing brother. As the book moves along, it is interesting to note the shift in power and authority between the trio. While Igil was initially the mastermind in control of the mission, we find out that both Maddy and Dorac have their own agendas against the Elite. They each have their own reasons for what they are setting out to do.Proctor creates a futuristic universe that is rich in detail, and he developed the characters very nicely. I loved the surprising and touching friendship between Maddy and Dorac. Given the general animosity between the two races, it is understandable that they did not feel comfortable discussing their feelings. However, time and again throughout the book, the characters expressed genuine emotions towards each other by their actions. The ending of the book left me wanting more. I wonder if Proctor plans to follow this up with a sequel?I enjoyed the book! I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys the science fiction genre!MY RATING: 3.5 stars!
4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. An Interesting Science Fiction Novel By Chels This is a very intriguing science fiction novel. The main character has the type of personality that forces people to sit up and pay attention. The plot is unique and fast-paced. The author combines many factors to form a very intricate and detailed plot. There are many questions left unanswered, the reader will hope this is deliberate, as it may mean that this novel will turn into a series! The reader will find the cruelty and cold-bloodedness of the regime horrifying and a terrific antagonist. The Helots, an entire population, is suppressed and not allowed to breed. This topic is particularly endearing to the reader, there is a clear cut wrong and right to this novel. Overall, even non or new science fiction fans will find some quality of this novel to enjoy. This book is recommended for young adults/adults who enjoy the science aspect of fiction and a powerful main character.I received this novel for review, in no way did that impact my thoughts on this novel.*Complimentary copy received for this review, does not affect my opinion in any way*
